In Firenze, Per Piero Matini all'Ins. del Leone, 1686.

Seconda edizione. Cm.26x19. Pg.(6), 122. Legatura cartonata coeva, con unghie. Esemplare in barbe. Fresco esemplare, ampi i margini.

Fleta Minor. The Laws of Art and Nature, in Knowing, Judging, Assaying, Fining, Refining an Inlarging the Bodies of confin'd Metals. In Two Parts. The First contains Assays of Lazarus Erckern, Chief Prover ( oe Assay- Master General of the Empire of Germany). The Second contains Essays on Metallick Words, as a Dictionary to many pleasing Discourses

London: Printed for and sold by Stephen Bateman, 1686 - Pettus was deputy governor of the royal mines for over thirty-five years. The first part is translated from the German of Erckern, but the second part is Pettus' own contribution to the lexicography of metals - and wonderfully anecdotal and original it is as this from his entry on "DUNG": ".among the Indians it was usual, that when they intended Homage to their Superiors, or welcome too their Friends, they did evacuate their Dung into their Hand, and so daub it on the Face of whom they intended to honour or pleasure, and was ever accepted by them, as the first and best of the Welcoming Ceremonies: for Agricola tells us of Mans-Dung made as sweet as Civit. But to return nearer home, when I remained in London, during the great Plague in 1666, Dr. Glisson (famous in his time) being my old Friend and Acquaintance, perswaded me to take a piece of his constant Antidote, which was only the Dung of one that had dyed of the Plague, dryed, and so kept in a foraminous Box, for the best Antidotical Perfume; but I thank God I escaped without it." Engaging, too, are the delightful engravings which embellish the work Second edition. Folio. Frontispiece & Illustrated with 44 sculptures. Contemporary quarter calf and boards, rebacked, later endpapers; corner of title page torn away, first three leaves waterstained at lower edge. A good sound copy. Contemporary folding Vellum, 4° (Spener, 1635-1705, was born in Ribeauvillé in Upper Alsace (now part of France). After a brief time at the grammar school of Colmar, he went to Strasbourg in 1651, where he devoted himself to the study of philology, history and philosophy, and won his degree of master (1653) by a disputation against the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes. He then became private tutor to the princes Christian and Charles of the Palatinate, and lectured in the university on philology and history. From 1659 to 1662 he visited the universities of Basel, Tübingen and Geneva, and commenced the study of heraldry, which he pursued throughout his life. In Geneva especially his religious views and tendencies were turned in the direction of mysticism. Highly influenced by Johann Arndt, Lewis Bayly, Jean de Labadie, and Theophil Großgebauer, Spener's own writings display an emphasis on personal transformation through spiritual rebirth and renewal. It is this focus on individual devotion and piety that places him within the realm of Pietism, so Spener has been called the ""Father of Pietism"".) ".

Moderate soiling to boards, small repair to spine tail. Rear free endpaper wanting. A clean copy in very good condition. First issue of Terra Rossa's famous account detailing discoveries in the New World, as denoted by the 1686 date and the privilege below the imprint reading "Et Privilegio del Serenissimo Principe." Includes much information on Venetian explorers, going so far as to credit Marco Polo with discovering Australia, and attempts to rename Terra Australis as Terra Australe Magallanica to honor Magellan. In this work, Terra Rossa "attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis…" (Hiatt, TERRA INCOGNITA, p. 261). He also defends the claims of the Zeno brothers to have made a northern discovery of America prior to Columbus. A rare and surprisingly little-known work focused on early exploration of the Southern Hemisphere. SABIN 94858. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 686/157/

1686 - A Paris, Chez Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1686. » (OHR, 2134, fer n°3). Title printed in red & black with engraved arms of the Royal Society. 1 p.l., 110, 187 pp. Folio (some occasional browning and/or foxing as is typical). London: A. & J. Churchill, 1697. [bound with]:--. De Structura Glandularum Conglobatarum Consimiliumque Partium, Epistola. 1 p.l., 10 pp. Folio. London: R. Chiswell, 1697. First editions and one of the grandest productions of the Royal Society; this handsome folio contains the collected works of Malpighi (1628-94), the founder of histology and the greatest of the microscopists; they are today very scarce on the market. The first title is the first complete edition of his collected works published during his lifetime; all three works are splendid examples of bookmaking. Included here are Malpighi's great masterpieces on the anatomy of plants, the embryonic development of the chick (which makes him the founder of descriptive or iconographic embryology), the anatomy of the silkworm (the first monograph on an invertebrate), the discovery of the existence of capillaries (which completed the chain of the circulation of the blood postulated by Harvey), and his observations on the lungs (which overthrew the current conceptions of the pulmonary tissues demonstrating their true vesicular nature). Malpighi's writings were first collected in Le Clerc and Manget's Bibliotheca Anatomica (Geneva: 1685), but without his Anatome Plantarum and De Bombyce. Also, "the two folio volumes of this London edition are far more handsomely printed, in much larger type, and the drawings are beautifully reproduced and widely spaced upon the plates" (Adelmann). Very good copies. With the fine and large late 17th-century engraved armorial bookplate of Pierre de Chalud. ❧ Adelmann, I, p. 509. Frati 2, 4, & 4bis. I. Garrison-Morton 66.       London Printed by R. Norton and J. Macock for R. Royston 1686 - Second Edition, folio, half-title, short tear in outer blank margin of the dedication leaf to Charles 11, worming on upper inner blank margins of the last 100pp. but not affecting the text at any point, with a divisional title-page for each treatise, [16], 577, [15] pp., contemporary calf, extremities rubbed, corners rubbed through to the boards, head and foot of spine chipped. The first edition of this work was published in 1676 and was republished unchanged for this second edition. "For each topic Wiseman examines the anatomy, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management, adding selected case histories or observations from his vast experience. These personal observations, some brief and some in extensive detail, concern 600 individual patients . constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain and have yet to be analysed fully. In Europe only the 600 observations of Wilhelm Fabry of Hilden, published earlier in the century, are comparable . The eight treatises concern ulcers, tumours, diseases of the anus, king's evil, wounds, gunshot wounds, fractures and luxations, and lues venerea (syphilis and gonorrhoea) respectively.[his] immense expertise in traumatic surgery is particularly evident in his account of gunshot wounds, including severe compound limb fractures." - ODNB. ******"Wiseman is our surgical Sydenham.

Battista Zappata, Torino 1686 - In 4°(22,5 x 33,5); pagine 310, (2).

Smooth spine, plain endleaves, gilt edges. (The gold oxidised, remains of two of the original yellow silk ties). Contained within a modern blue cloth drop-over box, lettered down the spine on a black goatskin label. A copy of the officially published resolutions of the 1685-1686 session of the Bohemian legislative body, the Zemsky snem. The British Library has a collection of 41 such publications, the first two dated 1683 and 1694 and the rest being eighteenth century. The Library of Congress has 26 publications dating from 1721 to 1822. This is a fine copy in what must be the official binding. One large and rather crowded block was used for both covers, with the central cartouche separately tooled. The block appears to have been slightly damaged at some stage, as seen in the break in the border on the left-hand side. The gold alloy has oxidised, as is so often the case on these vellum bindings.
