Traité de l'église contre les heretiques

chez Antoine Michallet 1686 - - chez Antoine Michallet, A Paris 1686, in 12 (15x9cm), 435pp., Un Vol. relié. 435pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Padua: Cadorino, 1686.. [32],298,[10, Index]pp. including a portrait of the author. Half title. Quarto. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title. Moderate soiling to boards, small repair to spine tail. Rear free endpaper wanting. A clean copy in very good condition. First issue of Terra Rossa's famous account detailing discoveries in the New World, as denoted by the 1686 date and the privilege below the imprint reading "Et Privilegio del Serenissimo Principe." Includes much information on Venetian explorers, going so far as to credit Marco Polo with discovering Australia, and attempts to rename Terra Australis as Terra Australe Magallanica to honor Magellan. In this work, Terra Rossa "attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis…" (Hiatt, TERRA INCOGNITA, p. 261). He also defends the claims of the Zeno brothers to have made a northern discovery of America prior to Columbus. A rare and surprisingly little-known work focused on early exploration of the Southern Hemisphere. SABIN 94858. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 686/157/

1686 - A Paris, Chez Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1686. » (OHR, 2134, fer n°3). NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

Title printed in red & black with engraved arms of the Royal Society. 1 p.l., 110, 187 pp. Folio (some occasional browning and/or foxing as is typical). London: A. & J. Churchill, 1697. [bound with]:--. De Structura Glandularum Conglobatarum Consimiliumque Partium, Epistola. 1 p.l., 10 pp. Folio. London: R. Chiswell, 1697. First editions and one of the grandest productions of the Royal Society; this handsome folio contains the collected works of Malpighi (1628-94), the founder of histology and the greatest of the microscopists; they are today very scarce on the market. The first title is the first complete edition of his collected works published during his lifetime; all three works are splendid examples of bookmaking. Included here are Malpighi's great masterpieces on the anatomy of plants, the embryonic development of the chick (which makes him the founder of descriptive or iconographic embryology), the anatomy of the silkworm (the first monograph on an invertebrate), the discovery of the existence of capillaries (which completed the chain of the circulation of the blood postulated by Harvey), and his observations on the lungs (which overthrew the current conceptions of the pulmonary tissues demonstrating their true vesicular nature). Malpighi's writings were first collected in Le Clerc and Manget's Bibliotheca Anatomica (Geneva: 1685), but without his Anatome Plantarum and De Bombyce. Also, "the two folio volumes of this London edition are far more handsomely printed, in much larger type, and the drawings are beautifully reproduced and widely spaced upon the plates" (Adelmann). Very good copies. With the fine and large late 17th-century engraved armorial bookplate of Pierre de Chalud. ❧ Adelmann, I, p. 509. Frati 2, 4, & 4bis. I. Garrison-Morton 66.         Several Chirurgical Treatises. By Richard Wiseman, Serjeant-Chirurgeon.

London Printed by R. Norton and J. Macock for R. Royston 1686 - Second Edition, folio, half-title, short tear in outer blank margin of the dedication leaf to Charles 11, worming on upper inner blank margins of the last 100pp. but not affecting the text at any point, with a divisional title-page for each treatise, [16], 577, [15] pp., contemporary calf, extremities rubbed, corners rubbed through to the boards, head and foot of spine chipped. The first edition of this work was published in 1676 and was republished unchanged for this second edition. "For each topic Wiseman examines the anatomy, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management, adding selected case histories or observations from his vast experience. These personal observations, some brief and some in extensive detail, concern 600 individual patients . constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain and have yet to be analysed fully. In Europe only the 600 observations of Wilhelm Fabry of Hilden, published earlier in the century, are comparable . The eight treatises concern ulcers, tumours, diseases of the anus, king's evil, wounds, gunshot wounds, fractures and luxations, and lues venerea (syphilis and gonorrhoea) respectively.[his] immense expertise in traumatic surgery is particularly evident in his account of gunshot wounds, including severe compound limb fractures." - ODNB. ******"Wiseman is our surgical Sydenham. He by his skill and personality helped to raise the whole status of surgery. He was the first of the great British surgeons." - Power, pp. 198-201.       Prague 1686 - Woodcut arms on the recto and verso of the title and engraved arms on pp. [xxxiv] and [xxxv]. Small 4to. [195 x 152 x 11 mm]. [1]f, xxxii, [iv] pp. Contemporary binding of vellum over thin boards, the covers blocked in gilt (gold alloy) to an all-over design with various arms and supporters, birds, amongst foliage, with a cartouche at the centre, containing on the front cover the double-headed Imperial eagle and on the rear a rampant lion. Smooth spine, plain endleaves, gilt edges. (The gold oxidised, remains of two of the original yellow silk ties). Contained within a modern blue cloth drop-over box, lettered down the spine on a black goatskin label. A copy of the officially published resolutions of the 1685-1686 session of the Bohemian legislative body, the Zemsky snem. The British Library has a collection of 41 such publications, the first two dated 1683 and 1694 and the rest being eighteenth century. The Library of Congress has 26 publications dating from 1721 to 1822. This is a fine copy in what must be the official binding. One large and rather crowded block was used for both covers, with the central cartouche separately tooled. The block appears to have been slightly damaged at some stage, as seen in the break in the border on the left-hand side. The gold alloy has oxidised, as is so often the case on these vellum bindings.

Chez Jean Boude, Toulouse 1686 - 8 pp. Bound in marbled wrappers and housed in a fine red morocco case. $3850 Extremely rare first and only edition of this detailed popular newsletter concerning the contemporary reception of three Siamese ambassadors in Paris in September of 1686. The report gives a full description of their entrance, their itinerary, and the names and qualities of the individual ambassadors ¿ whose 9-month stay in northern France between 1686 and 1687 must have provoked enormous interest. Providing the reader with some background, the work notes that the King of Siam, having been only recently convinced of the greatness of Louis XIV and the French nation, has decided to send three more mandarins as envoys. According to this account, they arrived at Brest on the 18th of June and reached Paris only on the 12th August. On the ¿first day of this month of September¿, the delegation was officially presented to Louis XIV. Its centerpiece was the King of Siam¿s letter to Louis, written on a blade of gold encased in a golden boëte (bottle?) and poised atop a golden chalice, all of which was carried aloft on a machine by 12 Swiss guards. The ambassadors themselves, it is recorded, took care to cover the machine with their parasols. The gifts presented by the envoys are notable for their overwhelming Japanese provenance (a closed center of trade to the French), and are accompanied here by occasional offhand remarks. Two vases of tombac (a flexible alloy similar to brass) are thought ¿presque aussi précieux que l¿or¿, and are imputed to be ¿what the ancients called electrum¿; two samurai swords presented by the King of Japan to the King of Siam are accompanied by the remark ¿they say that those who know how to handle these swords properly can cut a man¿s body in half; it¿s this that makes them beyond price¿; etc. An antique marble sculpture apparently depicts a Chinese man whom the Siamese call To inghoing; ¿we belivee that this is the same as he whom we call Confuscius¿. The writer of the newsletter seems surprisingly well-informed, and is certainly aware of the plans of the official retinue, suggesting a source perhaps close to the court. ¿They are presently busy seeing the beauties and the riches of the Capital of our Kingdom¿ Around February after they have had their final royal audience, they will return and recount all that they have seen, and assuredly they will not forget what they have learned, and understood of the suprising reunion of Protestants to the Roman religion, for the King of Siam having proposed Louis le Grand as a model in all things, and desiring to be able to make his entire kingdom French¿has demanded that the King send him missionaries, persons experienced in warfare, wise men, and men learned in many arts.¿ Following this account of the ambassadors¿ visit is a brief ¿Description du Royaume de Siam¿ ¿ with much reference to Arab and Moorish settlements, to the Siamese love of music, to their ¿superbly-dressed women¿, etc. Thanks to royal decree, Siam enjoys public schools in which laws and religion are taught in the vernacular, but the sciences are reserved for a learned tongue. Inspired no doubt by the Chinese rites controversty, the commentator notes that despite their plural deities the Siamese do believe in one Creator of the Earth and the Heavens, and they do maintain that the world will end in fire. The final leaf of the work is occupied with a discussion of the ¿names and qualities¿ of the amabassadors. OCLC records only the copy at Cornell. * OCLC 64004509 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Naples 1686 - A fundamental account on the Philippines, Ladrones and the martyrdom of Sanvitores. 1686. Naples. In 4to (206 mm x 155mm). 1 [blank] + 11 ff. + portrait + 663 + 1 [blank]. Contemporary Italian vellum over boards, spine with raised bands and lettered in ink, gently soiled, generally fine. A very good copy, occasionally browned, minor toning to some leaves. First Italian edition, translated from the original Spanish (1683) by Ambrosio Ortiz. This is the official biography of Sanvitores, written in order to produce evidence for canonization. Sanvitores (1627 ¿ 1672) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary, recognized as founder of the first Catholic Church in Guam (the land being donated by local Chief Kepuha) and for establishing the Spanish presence in the Mariana islands (Ladrones); he arrived in Mexico in 1660 and in 1662 journeyed from Acapulco to the Philippines where he remained for 6 years, when permission was finally obtained for his mission to the Ladrones islands in the North Pacific, renamed Marianas at this time in honor of Maria Anna of Austria. A life of Luis de Medina, one of his companions martyred in the Marianas in 1670 was compiled from documents supplied by Sanvitores. His life ended abruptly, being martyred on Guam in 1672. A fundamental work, containing one of first detailed accounts of the Marianas in the Pacific; much also included respecting the Philippines and Guatemala. Illustrated with a fine engraved plate by Pesche, shows the martyrdom of Father Sanvitores, woodcut device on last folio. Sabin, 26591. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Duobus voluminibus comprehensa, quorum syllabus pagina post vitam authoribus ultima exhibetur. 2 Vols. FOLIO. FULL ORIGINAL VELLUM, a VERY FINE copy, COMPLETE and internally clean. Rotterdam, Leers 1686. LIGHTFOOT, JOHN: English Biblical critic and Hebraist; b. at Stoke-upon-Trent (38 m. n. by w. of Birmingham), Staffordshire, Mar. 29, 1602; d. at Ely, Cambridgeshire, Dec. 6, 1675. After completing his education at Christ's College, Cambridge, he taught at Repton, Derbyshire, for two years and then took orders. Appointed curate of Norton-in-Hales, Shropshire, he became chaplain to the Hebraist, Sir Rowland Cotton, who urged him to study Hebrew and other Semitic languages. He accompanied Cotton when he removed to London, and then became rector of Stone, Staffordshire, for about two years, but in 1628 changed his residence to Hornsey, Middlesex, in order to be able to consult the rabbinical collections at Sion College, London. During his residence at Hornsey he wrote his first work, dedicated to Cotton and entitled Erubhin, or Miscellanies, Christian and Judaical, penned for Recreation at vacant Hours (London, 1629). Lightfoot was a prolific writer and is noteworthy as the first Christian scholar to call attention to the importance of the Talmud. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1686 - The rare first French edition, of what´s arguably the most influential buccaneering account; from the Hamsworth library. 1686. Paris. Jacques Lefebvre. Two volumes in 12mo (164 mm x 87 mm). 1 [blank] + 15 ff. + 342 + 12 ff. + 1 [blank]; 1 [blank] + 3 ff. + 384 + 12 ff. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands, richly gilt and lettered, worn but still an attractive binding in its original condition. A fine copy, gently browned as often and with a few foxing spots, second title water stained, short tears to folding plates. First French edition. Besides its rarity, this edition is also important for its illustrations don´t derive from either the Dutch original or two earliest English editions. The translation was prepared by Frontigniéres, from Exquemelin´s own manuscript; the first edition in all was published in Dutch in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. The success was immediate, translations followed and editions continued until the 18th century. Exquemelin (1645 ¿ 1707) was a French Huguenot, in 1666 made sale towards the Antilles, his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates and after reaching Tortuga he was apparently sold to a local who subsequently sold to a surgeon of some sort, he would teach him his office and eventually grant him his freedom against payment. At an uncertain date, Exquemelin became a privateer; as a pirate, he participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669 and that of Panama in 1670 under Morgan. His experiences and observations were concentrated in his memoires. The detail with which Exquemelin describes the lootings, plundering, life and adventures of these seamen is, and was unequaled for a long time. The illustrations include seven folding maps and views; the Maracaibo and Panama maps closely follow the Dutch, a large folding map of the Spanish Main is entirely new to this edition. The text from this edition was substantially augmented by the editor, Journel; he is also responsible for shading light onto the term ¿buccaneer¿. Provenance: the Hamsworth copy (lot 6479, Sotheby´s, December 1949, 2/10/- GBP). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Explanations (lettered A through Z) of the four illustrations are below. "Stampata in Amsterdam Appresso Francesco Viedeni; e ristampata in Venetia.         Institutiones ad fundamenta linguæ Hebrææ. Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár, Klausenburg), Sándor (Alexander) Szathmári Pap, 1743. 4to. Set in roman and italic types with extensive Hebrew, incidental fraktur, Greek (2 sizes) and Arabic, and one 3-letter word in Samaritan. Contemporary gold-tooled sprinkled tanned sheepskin, each board with the Diesbach Belleroche coat of arms, probably a son of Nicolas de Diesbach Belleroche (1668-1735) in Switzerland.

STCN (1 copy); KVK & WorldCat (2 copies). Second edition of Albert Schultens's renowned grammar of biblical Hebrew. Schultens (1686-1750), known as the father of comparative Semitic philology, taught Hebrew at Franeker and Leiden. He wrote extensively on the relationship between Hebrew and other Semitic languages, claiming that Arabic and Hebrew were "twin sisters". He used Arabic to interpret obscure Hebrew passages in the Bible. Schultens's extensive grammar was one of the most influential Hebrew grammars of the 18th century. Slightly browned and foxed, but otherwise in very good condition and only slightly trimmed (preserving an occasional deckle). The gold of the spine and edges was not well bonded and has been largely lost. The binding shows a few small worm holes, small cracks in the spine and other minor damage, but is still good. The rare second edition of an important work, also a remarkable example of Transylvanian book production.

Riflessioni geografiche circa le terre incognite [Geographical Reflections on the Unknown Lands]. Distese in ossequio perpetuo della nobiltà veneziana, nelle quali... Si pruova, che i patrizi di venezia prima d'ogni altro hanno all'Italia, & all'Europa, discoperte tutte le terre anticamente incognite, anco l'America, e la Terra Australe

Padua: per il Cadorino, 1686. Quarto, with a portrait of the author; a few light stains, a small wormhole and repaired tear in the half-title, but an excellent copy in 19th-century marbled boards, rebacked, with the bookplate of "Bibliotheca Veneta Car. Frid. Guilelm Brose MDCCCLXXII" Colossal snob and fervent Venetian patriot. Rare, important and little-known early work on the southern continent, summarising early geographical knowledge and drawing on Marco Polo and others to sing the praises of Italian, and specifically Venetian explorers: Terrarossa 'attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis…' (Hiatt, Terra Incognita, p. 261). This is the first issue of the first edition of this rare work, identified by the imprint with the privilege "del serenissimo principe" and dated 1686 (the same sheets were also issued with the imprint date altered to 1687 and the privilege "del serenissimo senato"). Terra Rossa concentrates extensively on Terra Australis (which he proposes calling Terra Australe Magallanica, in honour of Magellan), mostly with reference to Marco Polo, and considerable importance is attached to Marco Polo's "Beach, provincia aurifera" (Beach, the gold-bearing province), a promontory of the hypothetical Terra Australis Incognita, which became an important feature in maps of the period after Mercator first featured it on his sixteenth-century maps (specifically citing Marco Polo as his source). By the mid-seventeenth century, it had become a regular (if moveable) part of attempts to reconcile it with the fragments of coastline known from the Dutch voyages. Despite its frequent occurrence on maps there seems to be a surprisingly small canon of textual references to it. Terra Rossa himself describes his work as a friendly dispute with Michel Antoine Baudrand, whose Geographia ordine litterarum disposita (1682) had questioned the truth of geographical accounts by such 'gentlemen of Adria' as Marco Polo and the Zeno brothers. The 'colossal snob and fervent Venetian patriot by adoption, Vitale Terrarossa… in the 1680s was to argue that it was Marco "a Venetian patrician" who had discovered Australia - just as, he says, "the Venetian patricians", the Zeni brothers had discovered America in the fourteenth century and had by their writings inspired Columbus to get there. One stresses the "patrician" aspect here in conformity with the fervour of Terrarossa's own sentiments…' (Larner, Marco Polo and the discovery of the world, p. 170). Corin Braga has written extensively on this text in Derniers refuges terrestres des utopies classiques: le Continent Austral Inconnu et les pôles géographiques (online resource), setting the work into a context of invented worlds and utopias such as those by Neville, Vairasse, De Foigny, Restif de la Bretonne, Hall, Seriman, Bowman and others.

Det engelska originalet "The practise of Christian graces, or the whole duty of man, laid down in a plain and familiar way" blev även i sitt hemland en av de mest lästa och uppskattade andakts- och uppbyggelseskrifter under 1600-talet.

Confucius Sinarum Philosophus, sive scientia latine exposita

Paris: Andrea Cramoisy for Daniel Horthemels, 1686-, 1687. Small folio, folding engraved portrait of Confucius and folding engraved map of China, several engraved headpieces and initials, some small stamps and early manuscript annotation on front free endpaper; a fine copy in 18th-century tree calf, fine gilt border on boards, spine richly gilt with crimson label. First European printing of the works of Confucius. The first European printing of the works of Confucius. As Lowendahl points out, 'by one of the stranger ironies of history, Europe first learned of Confucius from Jesuits who had been sent out to convert the "heathen" Chinese'. This important compendium was 'the first systematic and comprehensive presentation of Confucianism' (Knud Lundbaek), and includes the first ever translation into Latin of The Analects, the fundamental Confucian text and the very basis of Chinese scholarship. The work is also known for its significant map representing the provinces of China, and indicating the centres of missionary activity. There is besides an attractive image of Confucius in a stylised library, the walls lined with books bearing the titles of some of his classic works. The large characters at the top read 'National Academy of Learning' and those bracketing the arch 'Confucius, the First Teacher under Heaven'. In many ways the modern era of European contact with China began in 1601, when the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci arrived in the Chinese capital to establish a Catholic mission. The reports of Ricci and his colleagues were widely published, with many, like this, produced in Paris, a centre for the Jesuits. Although European scholarship on China continued unabated, this present work can be seen as the forerunner to the great eighteenth-century enthusiasm for China, a development that had a dramatic influence on European culture, most obviously in the decorative arts and architecture, but also in the currents of scholarly and intellectual writing. Leibniz and Voltaire were among the more important writers to adapt Chinese ideas, quite apart from ambitious projects such as Du Halde's Description… de l'Empire de Chine of 1735. Translations of the works of Confucius into Latin were central to this renaissance of Chinese thought in the West. The project had begun with two individual titles, both of which were published in the East: Father da Costa's Sapientia Sinica (in English known as The Great Learning) of 1662 and Father Prospero Intorcetta's Sinarum Scientia Politico-Moralis (The Doctrine of the Mean) of 1667. The current work, produced under the editorship of Philippe Couplet, reprised these two earlier translations of Da Costa and Intorcetta, and was improved through the addition of the first translation of The Analects as well as a fourth part, Couplet's own chronological table of the Chinese dynasties, with separate title. As a result, it was both the first great compendium of the thought of Confucius, and the first of his works to be produced in Europe. The work was well received, with a French edition in 1688 and an English version in 1691. Numerous further editions appeared over the following decades. This excellent copy has the bookplate of the renowned nineteenth-century Orientalist, bibliophile and Czech intellectual Voita Naprstek.

Historia Plantarum Species... De Plantis in genere

London: M. Clark for H. Faithorne, 1686-1688-, 1704. Three volumes, folio, bookplate of Haskell Norman in first volume; some browning and scattered foxing particularly in the third volume (as usual); a handsome set in contemporary calf, a few scuffs, neat restoration to joints and heads of spines, banded spine gilt with double red morocco labels. With a description of Dampier's west Australian plants. A marvellous set: first edition, first issue, complete with the rare third volume published eighteen years after the main work in a single issue limited to only 200 copies, and notably including contemporary descriptions of some of the plants collected by Dampier on the northwest coast of Australia. John Ray was considered the "father of British botany" and this was his greatest work, the most important botanical text of the seventeenth century, and the foundation of modern botany. By the time he wrote the first volume Ray had gained an 'encyclopaedic knowledge of the literature of botany and horticulture, from ancient times to the work of his contemporaries, including the latest acquisitions from microscopy. His clear mind and balanced judgement enabled him to select the well-attested facts from this mass of material and to present them in a rational perspective…' (Morton, History of Botanical Science). This work has specific importance for Australia. In 1699 Dampier, the first Englishman to land on the Australian continent, gathered together specimens of Australia's exotic flora. This collection of plants came from various places on the West Australian coast including Dirk Hartog Island, Shark Bay, near present-day Karratha, and East Lewis Island in the Dampier Archipelago south of Broome. Through his friendship with Thomas Woodward, Ray had on loan a large selection of Dampier's precious plant collection meaning that he was able, in the third volume of this work, to include a description of plants from Dampier's precious herbarium that had survived shipwreck on the navigator's return journey to England. In total, Ray described eighteen Dampier plants, nine from Australia, five from Brazil, one from Timor, two from New Guinea and one of an unknown locality. In turn, in Dampier's account of his voyage published in 1703, a translation of Ray's descriptions form the basis of his Account of Several Plants. John Ray's method of classification is called a polynomial system, a verbal description of the plant. At this time there was no set format for zoological or botanical descriptions, but if this format is far from ideal, it was nevertheless a milestone for Australian botany. This is the preferred first issue of the book, with the first state of the title pages to volumes one and two dated 1686 and 1688 respectively. A second issue appeared seven years later in 1693, while the important third volume containing Australian species was issued only once, in 1704. This copy is from the famous scientific library of the American collector Haskell F. Norman.
