Five Love-Letters from a Nun to a Cavalier - BOUND WITH - Seven Portuguese letters; being a second part to the five love-letters, from a nun to a cavalier

London: for R. Bentley - London: for H. Brome, 1686/1681, 1686. THIRD EDITION & FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. bound in one, 5" x 2-5/8", (iv)112pp & (iii)78pp., complete, lower 1/3 of licensed leaf clipped. Bound in fine contemporary full speckled calf, covers ruled in blind, lacking blank endleafs and front pastedown, newspaper article from 1928 attached to rear pastedown, hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, binding in remarkable condition, internally clean and bright, overall in VERY GOOD condition. Wing A891 & A893 The letters claim to be from a seduced Portuguese nun abandoned by her lover . According to Henriot, the influence of these letters cannot be exaggerated, since they are the origin of the epistolary novel. L'Estrange's version "Five love letters of a nun to a cavalier" was first published in 1678 (Wing A889) and is recorded in only six copies. Later 17th century editions of this title are all extremely rare surviving in only but a few copies. We can only locate 1 copy of the first title - The British Library and 3 copies of the second title - The British Library, Univ. of CA, & The Huntington. We also locate NO copy of any 17th C. editions of either title selling at auction. Only in the 1960's was Guilleragues positively identified as the author of "Lettres Portugaises", which were first published in 1669. The identification was the work of F. Deloffre and F. Rougeot. Born in Bordeaux and educated in Paris in 1660, Guilleragues was a portage of the prince de Conti. Made President of the Cours des Aides, in Bordeaux, he quickly sold his office to pay debts and in 1667 returned to Paris to the court of Louis XIV. His circle of friends included Racine, Boileau, La Rochefoucauld, Madame de Sevigne as well as Madame de Maintenon through whose good offices he became ambassador to Constantinople in 1677, where he died in 1685. The work was hugely popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a modern scholarly edition of the work and also a Whittington Press edition illustrated by Richard Kennedy (1986). Below is a list of all the 17th C. printings. 1678: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1680: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1681: Seven Portuguese letters 1686: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1693: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1693: Seven love-letters from a nun to a cavalier

      - Woodcut arms on title. 119, [1], 48, 36, 45 pp. Four parts in one vol. 12mo, 19th-cent. red morocco by R. Petit, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: F. Le Cointe & D. Horthemels, 1686. The extremely rare inventory catalogue of the manuscripts in the large and famous library of Pierre Séguier (1588-1672), chancellor of France and a man of deep learning. Séguier was a true bibliophile and an omnivorous one: Sauval, in his catalogue of the great Parisian libraries prepared in 1653-60, estimated at that time only the libraries of the King and Mazarin were larger; Séguier then owned about 24,000 volumes and he had more than ten years left to acquire! This is the only extant printed record of Séguier's manuscripts, about four thousand in number, based on the 1672 inventory by René Hardy, a lawyer and himself an owner of manuscripts, and the traveller and orientalist Melchisedech Thévenot (1620-92) who was to become Keeper of the Bibliothèque du Roi in 1684. The catalogue is divided into four sections, the first listing state and official papers in the widest sense, historical manuscripts, local histories, literature, medicine, etc. The second describes the illuminated manuscripts ("Inventaire des Miniatures"); the third the Greek manuscripts, as well as ca. fifty Slavonic manuscripts, and two Greek printed books. The final section describes the Arabic, Coptic, Syriac, Ethiopic, and Hebrew manuscripts as well as a few printed books in those languages. The collection was kept together in the hope that the Bibliothèque Royale might eventually acquire it en bloc. Although the price asked was only 40,000 livres - the 1672 valuation had amounted to 56,557 livres - the offer was never taken up. Séguier's library was notable for being open to the public; indeed, it was the library of choice for many students and scholars in Paris. He was very concerned about methods of cataloguing and, in fact, had three major catalogues and several smaller ones prepared during his lifetime. All of these catalogues were in manuscript. After Séguier's death, his widow, also a bibliophile of note, kept the library intact until her death in 1685 when separate catalogues of the printed books (1685) and the manuscripts were printed from the final manuscript inventory prepared in 1672. The printed books were sold off in May of 1686 but the manuscripts were retained as his share of the estate by the Chancellor's grandson, Coislin, bishop of Metz. He deposited the entire collection at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Près to which he left it upon his death, apart from about a hundred manuscripts sold to the agents of Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, now in the British Library. Confiscated during the French Revolution, and having suffered minor losses in a fire, three-quarters of Séguier's manuscripts are now in the Bibliothèque Nationale. A fine copy with the armorial bookplate of Louis de la Forets, Comte d'Armaillé and another. This catalogue is rare: it is the first time I have had it. ? Bléchet, p. 65. Histoire des bibliothèques françaises. Les Bibliothèques sous l'Ancien Régime 1530-1789 (ed. Claude Jolly), pp. 146-55. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 208-10, & Table XXV (incorrectly giving the date of this catalogue as 1685). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

La Rosa Trionfante nella partenza dell'Ill. & Ecc. Signor Luigi Mocenigo, dignissimo Podestà di Padova

Padua: Gio. Battista Pasquati, 1686. 4to (211 x 162 mm). [40] pages. Half-title, engraved frontispiece showing the arms of Mocenigo (two roses, argent on a sable ground and sable on an argent ground) held aloft by two maidens and with a pair of putti holding a crown at top; woodcut rose vignette on title, repeated in text, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut and typographic ornaments. Fine. Modern boards. *** A pretty gratulatory volume of verse and prose tributes to the podestà of Padua, Alvise "Luigi" Mocenigo (1628-1701) on the occasion of his retirement. By law, god knows why, every male member of the Mocenigo family was named Alvise; to avoid confusion they used numbers, and this Alvise was no. 9, but for the purposes of this tribute, he was the one and only Luigi M. Blessed with a calm temperament, Luigi fulfilled the charges of his offices responsibly, including the highest office of Podestà, which he held from 1684 to 1686, earning the approbation of his fellow citizens by promoting commerce, education, and the smooth administration of justice; and the compliments paid him in this volume, by G. A. Pauletta, Doctor F. M. B., Clementi (who signed the dedication), and anonymous authors of an ode, a madrigal and an epigram, were probably at least partly sincere. Pauletta's contribution is the eponymous Rosa Trionfante, a festival play, which was no doubt performed and enacted with a float and costumes: a triumphal chariot (trionfo in Italian, hence the wordplay of the title) is pulled along the shores of the Adriatic by four large winged lions wearing crowns of roses. The goddesses Virtue, Justice, Peace and Abundance stand at the four corners of the chariot. In the middle atop a superbissimo throne piled with roses, gems and gold, sits the departing podestà, flanked by Antenor (counselor to Priam King of Troy) and a personified Padua, who are given the main speaking parts in this 10-page playlet. Surrounding the coach are a chorus of "innumerable" Padovani carrying banners and applauding, shouting "Viva, Luigi, Viva!" The volume's collation is A20, consisting of ten quarto half-sheets inserted one inside the other, in a form of "nested" quiring only commonly used 100 years later, in France, by almanac printers. Soranzo 5783; cf. DBI vol. 75 (entry online). No copies located by OCLC or ICCU; not in Piantanida.

Woodcut arms on title.

        The Natural History of Stafford-shire

Printed at the Theater, Oxford 1686 - A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape with acid content which has subsequently browned. This tape has been professionally removed and new repairs completed - but there is browning and marking of the surrounding paper. Around 13 folding plates are affected, mainly at the central join with book block or at the edges (with occasional loss - Plate 29 is the worst example having lost a side fold - probably around an inch of the image). Most of the work is fairly unobtrusive, but some is very noticeable. Initial text pages including the title page have had repairs to outer margins and there is occasional small repair elsewhere. Contents: title page; imprimatur; dedication to James II 2pp; preface to the Reader 2pp; poem to James II 4pp; poems to Plot 3pp; directions to the map 3pp; large folding map - relaid onto heavier paper; text 450 pp with 26 folding and 11 single page plates; errata; index 10pp finis; Copy of the Proposals and subscribers list 4pp. Please ask for additional images if you want to further assess condition.       1686. "Map taken from ""Mercurio Geografico"", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. Marbled endpapers.l Rare first edition, complete with all twenty plates, of the full account of the author's first mission to Siam, including his long stay at the Cape of Good Hope with extensive notes on the South Africa Cape province, depicting hottentots, as well as exotic animals such as the zebra, rhinoceros; chameleon and several other cape reptiles on four double-sized plates; several elephants, the "walking" ginseng root, and a view of Bangkok. Provenance: Mr de Revoset, an old handwritten dedication on title and p.1. The work is rather rare, and seldom found complete. Some copies in BNF (3) and COPAC (2 in Oxford and 1 in the BL). Copies often have fewer plates than our copy. Our number of leaves with plates agrees with the OCLC standard description and that of the copy in the BL. There are a few copies on the market, but all have only 19 plates. Nissen only records an 8vo edition. Margins quite wide. Corners rubbed. Later endpapers. The margins with light dampstaining on some leaves, a few marginal wormholes and some marginal thumbing and staining. The plates usually cleaner. In all a good complete copy with all the plates.

Canterbury: chez Thomas Litwel" [but Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang(?)],, 1686. Traduit de l'Anglois du Sieur Jean Fox de Bruggs par M. J. F. Two parts in one volume, duodecimo (128 x 78 mm), the two parts with separate title-pages, but continuous pagination. Contemporary stiff vellum, ink title to spine. With the errata at the end of the table (5*3 verso). Leaf 5*4 (blank) cut away. Woodcut devices to titles, headpiece and historiated capitals. Fore edges of first 15 or so leaves expertly restored with tissue. Remains of early reference label to spine, small reference number inscription to top corner of first title page. Boards and spine slightly dust-soiled. A very good copy. First edition of Bayle's brilliant and impassionate defence of religious tolerance, a Huguenot exile's response to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes which had been enacted the previous year. The Commentaire philosophique established its author as a defender of free conscience for all believers and for atheists. It detailed Bayle's notion of errant conscience, scandalous to Protestants, Catholics and militant atheists alike: that error believed to be truth must be allowed all the privileges of truth. Bayle's plan, outlined in his title and preface, mentioned a third part, on two letters of St Augustine. In fact, a subsequent edition dated 1686?8 was published in four volumes, the third and fourth parts having come out as Supplément in 1687 and 1688. Published pseudonymously under a fictitious imprint and most probably printed in Amsterdam by Abraham Wolfgang.

"Canterbury: chez Thomas Litwel" [but Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang(?)], 1686 - Two parts in one volume, duodecimo (128 x 78 mm), the two parts with separate title-pages, but continuous pagination. Contemporary stiff vellum, ink title to spine. With the errata at the end of the table (5*3 verso). Leaf 5*4 (blank) cut away. Fore edges of first 15 or so leaves expertly restored with tissue. Remains of early reference label to spine, small reference number inscription to top corner of first title page. Boards and spine slightly dust-soiled. A very good copy. Woodcut devices to titles, headpiece and historiated capitals. In fact, a subsequent edition dated 1686–8 was published in four volumes, the third and fourth parts having come out as Supplément in 1687 and 1688. Published pseudonymously under a fictitious imprint and most probably printed in Amsterdam by Abraham Wolfgang.
