Riflessioni geografiche circa le terre incognite [Geographical Reflections on the Unknown Lands]. Distese in ossequio perpetuo della nobiltà veneziana, nelle quali... Si pruova, che i patrizi di venezia prima d'ogni altro hanno all'Italia, & all'Europa, discoperte tutte le terre anticamente incognite, anco l'America, e la Terra Australe...

Padua: per il Cadorino, 1686. Quarto, with a portrait of the author; a few light stains, a small wormhole and repaired tear in the half-title, but an excellent copy in 19th-century marbled boards, rebacked, with the bookplate of "Bibliotheca Veneta Car. Frid. Guilelm Brose MDCCCLXXII" Rare, important and little-known early work on the southern continent, summarising early geographical knowledge and drawing on Marco Polo and others to sing the praises of Italian, and specifically Venetian explorers: Terrarossa 'attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis... ' (Hiatt, Terra Incognita, p. 261).This is the first issue of the first edition of this rare work, identified by the imprint with the privilege "del serenissimo principe" and dated 1686 (the same sheets were also issued with the imprint date altered to 1687 and the privilege "del serenissimo senato").Terra Rossa concentrates extensively on Terra Australis (which he proposes calling Terra Australe Magallanica, in honour of Magellan), mostly with reference to Marco Polo, and considerable importance is attached to Marco Polo's "Beach, provincia aurifera" (Beach, the gold-bearing province), a promontory of the hypothetical Terra Australis Incognita, which became an important feature in maps of the period after Mercator first featured it on his sixteenth-century maps (specifically citing Marco Polo as his source). By the mid-seventeenth century, it had become a regular (if moveable) part of attempts to reconcile it with the fragments of coastline known from the Dutch voyages. Despite its frequent occurrence on maps there seems to be a surprisingly small canon of textual references to it.Terra Rossa himself describes his work as a friendly dispute with Michel Antoine Baudrand, whose Geographia ordine litterarum disposita (1682) had questioned the truth of geographical accounts by such 'gentlemen of Adria' as Marco Polo and the Zeno brothers. The 'colossal snob and fervent Venetian patriot by adoption, Vitale Terrarossa... in the 1680s was to argue that it was Marco "a Venetian patrician" who had discovered Australia - just as, he says, "the Venetian patricians", the Zeni brothers had discovered America in the fourteenth century and had by their writings inspired Columbus to get there. One stresses the "patrician" aspect here in conformity with the fervour of Terrarossa's own sentiments... ' (Larner, Marco Polo and the discovery of the world, p. 170).Corin Braga has written extensively on this text in Derniers refuges terrestres des utopies classiques: le Continent Austral Inconnu et les pôles géographiques (online resource), setting the work into a context of invented worlds and utopias such as those by Neville, Vairasse, De Foigny, Restif de la Bretonne, Hall, Seriman, Bowman and others.

Confucius Sinarum Philosophus, sive scientia latine exposita.

Paris: Andrea Cramoisy for Daniel Horthemels, 1686-87. Small folio, folding engraved portrait of Confucius and folding engraved map of China, several engraved headpieces and initials, some small stamps and early manuscript annotation on front free endpaper; 18th-century tree calf, fine gilt border on boards, spine richly gilt with crimson label. The first European printing of the works of Confucius and an early Enlightenment milestone, precursor to the great eighteenth-century enthusiasm for China, a development that had a dramatic influence on European culture, most obviously in the decorative arts and architecture, but also in the currents of scholarly and intellectual writing. Leibniz and Voltaire were among the more important writers to adapt Chinese ideas, quite apart from ambitious projects such as Du Halde's great "Description" (see below). In many ways the modern era of European contact with China had begun in 1601, when the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci arrived in the Chinese capital to establish a Catholic mission. The reports of Ricci and his colleagues were widely published, with many, like this, produced in Paris, a centre for the Jesuits. As Lowendahl points out, 'by one of the stranger ironies of history, Europe first learned of Confucius from Jesuits who had been sent out to convert the "heathen" Chinese'.This first systematic presentation of Confucianism includes the earliest translation into Latin of The Analects, the fundamental Confucian text and the very basis of Chinese scholarship. Translations of Confucius into Latin were central to the growth of western interest in Chinese thought. The project had begun with two individual titles, both of which were published in the East: Father da Costa's Sapientia Sinica (in English known as The Great Learning) of 1662 and Father Prospero Intorcetta's Sinarum Scientia Politico-Moralis (The Doctrine of the Mean) of 1667. This larger work, produced under the editorship of Philippe Couplet, reprised these two earlier translations, and was improved through the addition of the first translation of The Analects as well as a fourth part, Couplet's own chronological table of the Chinese dynasties, with separate title. As a result, it was both the first great compendium of the thought of Confucius, and the first of his works to be produced in Europe. It was well received, with a French edition in 1688 and an English version in 1691. Numerous further editions appeared over the following decades. The work is also known for its significant map representing the provinces of China, and indicating the centres of missionary activity. There is besides an attractive image of Confucius in a stylised library, the walls lined with books bearing the titles of some of his classic works. The large characters at the top read 'National Academy of Learning' and those bracketing the arch 'Confucius, the First Teacher under Heaven'. This excellent copy has the bookplate of the renowned nineteenth-century Orientalist, bibliophile and Czech intellectual Voita Naprstek. Fine.

Second edition (the first 8vo-edition), issued the same year as the first (in folio), describing the Venetian campaign for the reconquest of the Peloponnese or Morea, from which Venice had been almost completely excluded since the Turkish conquest of the Greek island in 1458."As is often the case with Coronelli's work, the contents may vary with each example as plates were added, subtracted or changed as the editor saw fit" (Rodney Shirley "Maps in the Atlases of the british Library", T.Coro-1a, - listing only 39 maps and views for this copy).Coronelli Vincenzo Maria, an Italian geographer and draughtsman, was born at Venice about 1650. From 1681-1683 he worked in Paris on a pair of 3.85 meter diameter globes for Louis XIV, which are now in the National Library in Paris. On his return to Venice he was made cosmographer of the Republic, and founded the Academy of Argonauts (the first Geographical Society). In 1702 he became general of his order.

Sukiya kuhoshu [trans.: Building Techniques in the Sukiya Architectural Style]

Numerous woodcut illus. in the text. Three vols. bound in four. Large 8vo, orig. brown wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. N.p.: dated at end of fourth volume "1686." First edition and very rare. This is one of the first books to describe the sukiya architectural style, which was developed in the late 16th century. The techniques of design and construction had been kept secret until the publication of books like this. The sukiya style was originally used for tea houses and its main tenets were the aesthetic of naturalness and rustic simplicity, designed to harmonize with their surroundings. The majority of Japanese houses for 400 years have been built in the sukiya style. The purpose of this book was to reveal the intricacies of the design and construction in the sukiya style, written for architects and builders. The first volume (in two volumes) describes the overall unity of design of the various elements sukiya style. Various kinds of joining devices are shown, including many sorts of nails, pins, and hooks. The elements of design include gates, floor plans, walls made of natural earthen plaster, and simply designed transoms. Vol. II contains descriptions of a number of buildings constructed in this style. The third volume is concerned with the design of the main rooms, gates, bathrooms, and other special purpose rooms. The woodcuts depict gates, numerous floor plans, stages, the joining devices, vases, etc. A very nice set.

London: for R. Bentley - London: for H. Brome, 1686/1681, 1686. THIRD EDITION & FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. bound in one, 5" x 2-5/8", (iv)112pp & (iii)78pp., complete, lower 1/3 of licensed leaf clipped. Bound in fine contemporary full speckled calf, covers ruled in blind, lacking blank endleafs and front pastedown, newspaper article from 1928 attached to rear pastedown, hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, binding in remarkable condition, internally clean and bright, overall in VERY GOOD condition. Wing A891 & A893 The letters claim to be from a seduced Portuguese nun abandoned by her lover . According to Henriot, the influence of these letters cannot be exaggerated, since they are the origin of the epistolary novel. L'Estrange's version "Five love letters of a nun to a cavalier" was first published in 1678 (Wing A889) and is recorded in only six copies. Later 17th century editions of this title are all extremely rare surviving in only but a few copies. We can only locate 1 copy of the first title - The British Library and 3 copies of the second title - The British Library, Univ. of CA, & The Huntington. We also locate NO copy of any 17th C. editions of either title selling at auction. Only in the 1960's was Guilleragues positively identified as the author of "Lettres Portugaises", which were first published in 1669. The identification was the work of F. Deloffre and F. Rougeot. Born in Bordeaux and educated in Paris in 1660, Guilleragues was a portage of the prince de Conti. Made President of the Cours des Aides, in Bordeaux, he quickly sold his office to pay debts and in 1667 returned to Paris to the court of Louis XIV. His circle of friends included Racine, Boileau, La Rochefoucauld, Madame de Sevigne as well as Madame de Maintenon through whose good offices he became ambassador to Constantinople in 1677, where he died in 1685. The work was hugely popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a modern scholarly edition of the work and also a Whittington Press edition illustrated by Richard Kennedy (1986). Below is a list of all the 17th C. printings. 1678: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1680: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1681: Seven Portuguese letters 1686: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1693: Five love-letters from a nun to a cavalier 1693: Seven love-letters from a nun to a cavalier

& Ecc. Signor Luigi Mocenigo, dignissimo Podestà di Padova

Padua: Gio. Battista Pasquati, 1686. 4to (211 x 162 mm). [40] pages. Half-title, engraved frontispiece showing the arms of Mocenigo (two roses, argent on a sable ground and sable on an argent ground) held aloft by two maidens and with a pair of putti holding a crown at top; woodcut rose vignette on title, repeated in text, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut and typographic ornaments. Fine. Modern boards. *** A pretty gratulatory volume of verse and prose tributes to the podestà of Padua, Alvise "Luigi" Mocenigo (1628-1701) on the occasion of his retirement. By law, god knows why, every male member of the Mocenigo family was named Alvise; to avoid confusion they used numbers, and this Alvise was no. 9, but for the purposes of this tribute, he was the one and only Luigi M. Blessed with a calm temperament, Luigi fulfilled the charges of his offices responsibly, including the highest office of Podestà, which he held from 1684 to 1686, earning the approbation of his fellow citizens by promoting commerce, education, and the smooth administration of justice; and the compliments paid him in this volume, by G. A. Pauletta, Doctor F. M. B., Clementi (who signed the dedication), and anonymous authors of an ode, a madrigal and an epigram, were probably at least partly sincere. Pauletta's contribution is the eponymous Rosa Trionfante, a festival play, which was no doubt performed and enacted with a float and costumes: a triumphal chariot (trionfo in Italian, hence the wordplay of the title) is pulled along the shores of the Adriatic by four large winged lions wearing crowns of roses. The goddesses Virtue, Justice, Peace and Abundance stand at the four corners of the chariot. In the middle atop a superbissimo throne piled with roses, gems and gold, sits the departing podestà, flanked by Antenor (counselor to Priam King of Troy) and a personified Padua, who are given the main speaking parts in this 10-page playlet. Surrounding the coach are a chorus of "innumerable" Padovani carrying banners and applauding, shouting "Viva, Luigi, Viva!" The volume's collation is A20, consisting of ten quarto half-sheets inserted one inside the other, in a form of "nested" quiring only commonly used 100 years later, in France, by almanac printers. Soranzo 5783; cf. DBI vol. 75 (entry online). No copies located by OCLC or ICCU; not in Piantanida.

Woodcut arms on title. 119, [1], 48, 36, 45 pp. Four parts in one vol. 12mo, 19th-cent. red morocco by R. Petit, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: F. Le Cointe & D. Horthemels, 1686. The extremely rare inventory catalogue of the manuscripts in the large and famous library of Pierre Séguier (1588-1672), chancellor of France and a man of deep learning. Séguier was a true bibliophile and an omnivorous one: Sauval, in his catalogue of the great Parisian libraries prepared in 1653-60, estimated at that time only the libraries of the King and Mazarin were larger; Séguier then owned about 24,000 volumes and he had more than ten years left to acquire! This is the only extant printed record of Séguier's manuscripts, about four thousand in number, based on the 1672 inventory by René Hardy, a lawyer and himself an owner of manuscripts, and the traveller and orientalist Melchisedech Thévenot (1620-92) who was to become Keeper of the Bibliothèque du Roi in 1684. The catalogue is divided into four sections, the first listing state and official papers in the widest sense, historical manuscripts, local histories, literature, medicine, etc. The second describes the illuminated manuscripts ("Inventaire des Miniatures"); the third the Greek manuscripts, as well as ca. fifty Slavonic manuscripts, and two Greek printed books. The final section describes the Arabic, Coptic, Syriac, Ethiopic, and Hebrew manuscripts as well as a few printed books in those languages. The collection was kept together in the hope that the Bibliothèque Royale might eventually acquire it en bloc. Although the price asked was only 40,000 livres - the 1672 valuation had amounted to 56,557 livres - the offer was never taken up. Séguier's library was notable for being open to the public; indeed, it was the library of choice for many students and scholars in Paris. He was very concerned about methods of cataloguing and, in fact, had three major catalogues and several smaller ones prepared during his lifetime. All of these catalogues were in manuscript. After Séguier's death, his widow, also a bibliophile of note, kept the library intact until her death in 1685 when separate catalogues of the printed books (1685) and the manuscripts were printed from the final manuscript inventory prepared in 1672. The printed books were sold off in May of 1686 but the manuscripts were retained as his share of the estate by the Chancellor's grandson, Coislin, bishop of Metz. He deposited the entire collection at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Près to which he left it upon his death, apart from about a hundred manuscripts sold to the agents of Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, now in the British Library. Confiscated during the French Revolution, and having suffered minor losses in a fire, three-quarters of Séguier's manuscripts are now in the Bibliothèque Nationale. A fine copy with the armorial bookplate of Louis de la Forets, Comte d'Armaillé and another. This catalogue is rare: it is the first time I have had it. ? Bléchet, p. 65. Histoire des bibliothèques françaises. Les Bibliothèques sous l'Ancien Régime 1530-1789 (ed. Claude Jolly), pp. 146-55. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 208-10, & Table XXV (incorrectly giving the date of this catalogue as 1685).

        The Natural History of Stafford-shire

Printed at the Theater, Oxford 1686 - A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape with acid content which has subsequently browned. This tape has been professionally removed and new repairs completed - but there is browning and marking of the surrounding paper. Around 13 folding plates are affected, mainly at the central join with book block or at the edges (with occasional loss - Plate 29 is the worst example having lost a side fold - probably around an inch of the image). Most of the work is fairly unobtrusive, but some is very noticeable. Initial text pages including the title page have had repairs to outer margins and there is occasional small repair elsewhere. Contents: title page; imprimatur; dedication to James II 2pp; preface to the Reader 2pp; poem to James II 4pp; poems to Plot 3pp; directions to the map 3pp; large folding map - relaid onto heavier paper; text 450 pp with 26 folding and 11 single page plates; errata; index 10pp finis; Copy of the Proposals and subscribers list 4pp. Please ask for additional images if you want to further assess condition.

Paris, Arnould Seneuze, Daniel Horthemels, 1686. 4to (23.8 x 17.5 cm). [xvi], 424, [viii] pp. Engraved title-vignette, engraved headpieces and initials to the dedication page and six chapters; ten full-page and ten double paged leaves with engravings, signed by Pierre Paul Sevin (artist) and Cornelis Vermeulen (engraver), for a total of 20 plates. Contemporary full calf. Spine with five raised bands; compartments with rich gilt floral patterns and dark red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers.l Rare first edition, complete with all twenty plates, of the full account of the author's first mission to Siam, including his long stay at the Cape of Good Hope with extensive notes on the South Africa Cape province, depicting hottentots, as well as exotic animals such as the zebra, rhinoceros; chameleon and several other cape reptiles on four double-sized plates; several elephants, the "walking" ginseng root, and a view of Bangkok. The very fine, large, and detailed head-pieces mainly show views on towns, gardens, courts, etc. Guy Tachard (1650-1712) was a French missionary and discoverer, he died in Bengal. Provenance: Mr de Revoset, an old handwritten dedication on title and p.1. The work is rather rare, and seldom found complete. Some copies in BNF (3) and COPAC (2 in Oxford and 1 in the BL). Copies often have fewer plates than our copy. Our number of leaves with plates agrees with the OCLC standard description and that of the copy in the BL. There are a few copies on the market, but all have only 19 plates. Nissen only records an 8vo edition. Margins quite wide. Corners rubbed. Later endpapers. The margins with light dampstaining on some leaves, a few marginal wormholes and some marginal thumbing and staining. The plates usually cleaner. In all a good complete copy with all the plates. De Backer/Sommervogel VII, 1802; Graesse VI2, 7; Nissen ZBI, 4066.
