Is also of importance to historians of Freemasonry, the author refers at some length to the Society of Freemasons and how it has spread over the Nation. Plot, naturalist & antiquary whose success is to be measured less in his own career than in the influence that his two county histories had on succeeding writers. By eschewing universalism, except in the range of literary reference that he brought to bear on his subjects which were treated in a relentlessly rational manner, Plot created a form of history writing which, by delimiting its subject either to a defined geographical region or to a particular topic, enabled practitioners of the genre to tackle manageable subjects. At the same time, by combining civil and ecclesiastical history with natural history, he introduced an element of novelty and enabled himself to describe a region as a unified whole in which nature and human activity were but two parts of a single environment. Authors of local histories, whether civil, natural, or both, were to acknowledge Plot's influence throughout the eighteenth century. If the model is no longer followed, the quality of his descriptions none the less continues to give value to his works. See ODNB.

Historia Plantarum species hactenus editas. . .

London: Mary Clark for Henry Faithorne, 1686. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Large Folio. 1686-1688. Volumes 1 and 2 (of 3). Large folio (440 x 282 mm). [26], 1-58, (59)-(62), 59-983 [1]; [8], 985-1350 [2] 1351-1944, [36] pp. Title of vol. 1 printed in red and black. Printed on large and thick paper. Contemporary mottled calf, spines with 7 raised bands richly gilt in compartments and with gilt-lettered red morocco labels (hinges repaired, corners bumped and scuffed, some wear to boards and extremities), red-sprinkled edges. Very little browning and occasional very minor spotting to text. Provenance: William Constable (armorial bookplate to front pastedowns); Haskell F. Norman (bookplate to front pastedowns). A fine, internally crisp and clean copy. ----Norman, Norman Library of Science and Medicine 1790 (this copy); Dibner 24; Horblit 87; NLM/Krivatsy 9409; Wing R-394, R-395A. - FIRST EDITION, LARGE PAPER COPY, second state of volume 1. Volumes 1 and 2 of Ray's great work in which he intended to classify all known European plants and attempted to integrate the increasing knowledge of exotic flora. Ray adopted Jungius' morphological system and terminology and includes essays on practical aspects such as propagation and plant diseases, as well as a thorough and systematic survey of plants according to taxonomic principles. Ray's theories paved the way for Linnaeus, but he enjoyed only modest success with Historia plantarum, largely due to the work's unwieldy size, lack of illustrations, and the political upheaval occurring at the time of publication. This in one of only a few known large-paper copies (AE records only two sets that have appeared at auction in the past). The paper in our copy is watermarked with a shield surrounded by a fleur-de-lys (cf. Briquet 995), compared to the cluster-of-grapes watermark in the regular paper-size copies (e.g. Norman 1789). A third volume, not included here, was published 16 years later, in 1704. Very Good.

        Histoire des Oracles.

Paris, Chez G. de Luyne, 1686. - 16x9,5 cm. 12 Bl., 321 S., 1 Bl. Ldr. der Zeit über 5 Bünden, Rückenvergoldung. - (Rücken berieben und mit kl. Fehlstelle und Anriss). Erstausgabe. Premiere Edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1686. Woodcut arms on title. 119, [1], 48, 36, 45 pp. Four parts in one vol. 12mo, 19th-cent. red morocco by R. Petit, triple gilt fillet round sides, spine richly gilt, a.e.g. Paris: F. Le Cointe & D. Horthemels, 1686. The extremely rare inventory catalogue of the manuscripts in the large and famous library of Pierre Séguier (1588-1672), chancellor of France and a man of deep learning. Séguier was a true bibliophile and an omnivorous one: Sauval, in his catalogue of the great Parisian libraries prepared in 1653-60, estimated at that time only the libraries of the King and Mazarin were larger; Séguier then owned about 24,000 volumes and he had more than ten years left to acquire! This is the only extant printed record of Séguier's manuscripts, about four thousand in number, based on the 1672 inventory by René Hardy, a lawyer and himself an owner of manuscripts, and the traveller and orientalist Melchisedech Thévenot (1620-92) who was to become Keeper of the Bibliothèque du Roi in 1684. The catalogue is divided into four sections, the first listing state and official papers in the widest sense, historical manuscripts, local histories, literature, medicine, etc.The second describes the illuminated manuscripts ("Inventaire des Miniatures"); the third the Greek manuscripts, as well as ca. fifty Slavonic manuscripts, and two Greek printed books. The final section describes the Arabic, Coptic, Syriac, Ethiopic, and Hebrew manuscripts as well as a few printed books in those languages. The collection was kept together in the hope that the Bibliothèque Royale might eventually acquire it en bloc. Although the price asked was only 40,000 livres - the 1672 valuation had amounted to 56,557 livres - the offer was never taken up.Séguier's library was notable for being open to the public; indeed, it was the library of choice for many students and scholars in Paris. He was very concerned about methods of cataloguing and, in fact, had three major catalogues and several smaller ones prepared during his lifetime. All of these catalogues were in manuscript. After Séguier's death, his widow, also a bibliophile of note, kept the library intact until her death in 1685 when separate catalogues of the printed books (1685) and the manuscripts were printed from the final manuscript inventory prepared in 1672. The printed books were sold off in May of 1686 but the manuscripts were retained as his share of the estate by the Chancellor's grandson, Coislin, bishop of Metz. He deposited the entire collection at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Près to which he left it upon his death, apart from about a hundred manuscripts sold to the agents of Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, now in the British Library. Confiscated during the French Revolution, and having suffered minor losses in a fire, three-quarters of Séguier's manuscripts are now in the Bibliothèque Nationale. A fine copy with the armorial bookplate of Louis de la Forets, Comte d'Armaillé and another. This catalogue is rare: it is the first time I have had it. ❧ Bléchet, p. 65. Histoire des bibliothèques françaises. Les Bibliothèques sous l'Ancien Régime 1530-1789 (ed. Claude Jolly), pp. 146-55. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 208-10, & Table XXV (incorrectly giving the date of this catalogue as 1685).

Riflessioni geografiche circa le terre incognite [Geographical Reflections on the Unknown Lands]. Distese in ossequio perpetuo della nobiltà veneziana, nelle quali... Si pruova, che i patrizi di venezia prima d'ogni altro hanno all'Italia, & all'Europa, discoperte tutte le terre anticamente incognite, anco l'America, e la Terra Australe...

Padua: per il Cadorino, 1686. Quarto, with a portrait of the author; a few light stains, a small wormhole and repaired tear in the half-title, but an excellent copy in 19th-century marbled boards, rebacked, with the bookplate of "Bibliotheca Veneta Car. Frid. Guilelm Brose MDCCCLXXII" Rare, important and little-known early work on the southern continent, summarising early geographical knowledge and drawing on Marco Polo and others to sing the praises of Italian, and specifically Venetian explorers: Terrarossa 'attempted to prove that Venetians had discovered all lands unknown to the ancients, including America and Terra Australis... ' (Hiatt, Terra Incognita, p. 261).This is the first issue of the first edition of this rare work, identified by the imprint with the privilege "del serenissimo principe" and dated 1686 (the same sheets were also issued with the imprint date altered to 1687 and the privilege "del serenissimo senato").Terra Rossa concentrates extensively on Terra Australis (which he proposes calling Terra Australe Magallanica, in honour of Magellan), mostly with reference to Marco Polo, and considerable importance is attached to Marco Polo's "Beach, provincia aurifera" (Beach, the gold-bearing province), a promontory of the hypothetical Terra Australis Incognita, which became an important feature in maps of the period after Mercator first featured it on his sixteenth-century maps (specifically citing Marco Polo as his source). By the mid-seventeenth century, it had become a regular (if moveable) part of attempts to reconcile it with the fragments of coastline known from the Dutch voyages. Despite its frequent occurrence on maps there seems to be a surprisingly small canon of textual references to it.Terra Rossa himself describes his work as a friendly dispute with Michel Antoine Baudrand, whose Geographia ordine litterarum disposita (1682) had questioned the truth of geographical accounts by such 'gentlemen of Adria' as Marco Polo and the Zeno brothers. The 'colossal snob and fervent Venetian patriot by adoption, Vitale Terrarossa... in the 1680s was to argue that it was Marco "a Venetian patrician" who had discovered Australia - just as, he says, "the Venetian patricians", the Zeni brothers had discovered America in the fourteenth century and had by their writings inspired Columbus to get there. One stresses the "patrician" aspect here in conformity with the fervour of Terrarossa's own sentiments... ' (Larner, Marco Polo and the discovery of the world, p. 170).Corin Braga has written extensively on this text in Derniers refuges terrestres des utopies classiques: le Continent Austral Inconnu et les pôles géographiques (online resource), setting the work into a context of invented worlds and utopias such as those by Neville, Vairasse, De Foigny, Restif de la Bretonne, Hall, Seriman, Bowman and others.

Confucius Sinarum Philosophus, sive scientia latine exposita.

Paris: Andrea Cramoisy for Daniel Horthemels, 1686-87. Small folio, folding engraved portrait of Confucius and folding engraved map of China, several engraved headpieces and initials, some small stamps and early manuscript annotation on front free endpaper; 18th-century tree calf, fine gilt border on boards, spine richly gilt with crimson label. The first European printing of the works of Confucius and an early Enlightenment milestone, precursor to the great eighteenth-century enthusiasm for China, a development that had a dramatic influence on European culture, most obviously in the decorative arts and architecture, but also in the currents of scholarly and intellectual writing. Leibniz and Voltaire were among the more important writers to adapt Chinese ideas, quite apart from ambitious projects such as Du Halde's great "Description" (see below). In many ways the modern era of European contact with China had begun in 1601, when the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci arrived in the Chinese capital to establish a Catholic mission. The reports of Ricci and his colleagues were widely published, with many, like this, produced in Paris, a centre for the Jesuits. As Lowendahl points out, 'by one of the stranger ironies of history, Europe first learned of Confucius from Jesuits who had been sent out to convert the "heathen" Chinese'.This first systematic presentation of Confucianism includes the earliest translation into Latin of The Analects, the fundamental Confucian text and the very basis of Chinese scholarship. Translations of Confucius into Latin were central to the growth of western interest in Chinese thought. The project had begun with two individual titles, both of which were published in the East: Father da Costa's Sapientia Sinica (in English known as The Great Learning) of 1662 and Father Prospero Intorcetta's Sinarum Scientia Politico-Moralis (The Doctrine of the Mean) of 1667. This larger work, produced under the editorship of Philippe Couplet, reprised these two earlier translations, and was improved through the addition of the first translation of The Analects as well as a fourth part, Couplet's own chronological table of the Chinese dynasties, with separate title. As a result, it was both the first great compendium of the thought of Confucius, and the first of his works to be produced in Europe. It was well received, with a French edition in 1688 and an English version in 1691. Numerous further editions appeared over the following decades. The work is also known for its significant map representing the provinces of China, and indicating the centres of missionary activity. There is besides an attractive image of Confucius in a stylised library, the walls lined with books bearing the titles of some of his classic works. The large characters at the top read 'National Academy of Learning' and those bracketing the arch 'Confucius, the First Teacher under Heaven'. This excellent copy has the bookplate of the renowned nineteenth-century Orientalist, bibliophile and Czech intellectual Voita Naprstek. Fine.

Sukiya kuhoshu [trans.: Building Techniques in the Sukiya Architectural Style]

Numerous woodcut illus. in the text. Three vols. bound in four. Large 8vo, orig. brown wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. N.p.: dated at end of fourth volume "1686." First edition and very rare. This is one of the first books to describe the sukiya architectural style, which was developed in the late 16th century. The techniques of design and construction had been kept secret until the publication of books like this. The sukiya style was originally used for tea houses and its main tenets were the aesthetic of naturalness and rustic simplicity, designed to harmonize with their surroundings. The majority of Japanese houses for 400 years have been built in the sukiya style. The purpose of this book was to reveal the intricacies of the design and construction in the sukiya style, written for architects and builders. The first volume (in two volumes) describes the overall unity of design of the various elements sukiya style. Various kinds of joining devices are shown, including many sorts of nails, pins, and hooks. The elements of design include gates, floor plans, walls made of natural earthen plaster, and simply designed transoms. Vol. II contains descriptions of a number of buildings constructed in this style. The third volume is concerned with the design of the main rooms, gates, bathrooms, and other special purpose rooms. The woodcuts depict gates, numerous floor plans, stages, the joining devices, vases, etc. A very nice set.

F2071.
