[VIANEN, Jan van (illustrator)].
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43. First edition published in the Netherlands of a wholly engraved love emblem book. It contains 45 engraved emblems, with the epigrams in four languages (Latin, Italian, French and Dutch) on the opposite page. Between 1683 and 1714 at least five editions were published at London with the emblems engraved by Philip Ayres, based on the love emblems of Heinsius, Crispyn de Passe's Thronus Cupidinis, and the Amorum Emblemata by Otto Vaenius. The plates of the present edition however, were newly engraved by the Dutch artist Jan van Vianen (ca. 1660-1726), who went to England in his youth. According to Praz, Ayres worked directly from the originals, so his plates were in reverse, while Jan van Vianen probably worked from the Ayres-plates, getting them "right" again. However, Vianen adapted them freely and showed better workmanship and a good sense of perspective which was entirely lacking in Ayres's plates. With bookplates. Only slightly browned with a few small spots and a small tear in the first two leaves. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall a very good copy.

Cologne, Jacques le Jeune, 1683.12mo. Wrappers. 72 pp.Interessantes, flott geschriebenes Wercken. Perrault, Claude.
Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1683. First edition of this influential treatise on the five orders of classical architecture, written by the physician and scientist generally credited with the design of the eastern façade of the Louvre. Perrault's theory of proportion introduced a lasting debate over ideas of positive and arbitrary beauty. In addition to the => six leaves of plates done by Pierre Le Pautre, Louis de Chastillon, and Sebastien Le Clerc, the work is illustrated with several in-text uses of a woodcut diagram comparing the five types, as well as a title-page vignette of the arms of Louis XIV and a distinctively rendered headpiece (signed by Chastillon) of the Colbert serpent coat of arms supported by a dog and a unicorn. And yes, Claude was related to (brother, in fact, of) Charles Perrault, the fabulist and reteller of the Cinderella story and other tales.

SYDENHAM, Thomas.
Londini: Typis R.N. Impensis Gualt. Kettilby, 1683. FIRST EDITION. "Sydenham believed that personal observation and the care of the patient were more important than the discovery of new physiological processes or the formulation of yet another general doctrine... This is essentially the modern view of the task of the practising physician and clinician. This practical outlook inspired Sydenham's numerous monographs on individual diseases... Among Sydenham's special monographs A Treatise on Gout, containing the first distinction between rheumatism and gout, is considered his masterpiece of clinical observation" (PMM). Sydenham's "classic description of the disease, which was based upon his own sufferings, wherein he differentiated finally between gout and rheumatism, has never been surpassed" (Copeman). It is apparently the second monograph in English on gout. Printing and the Mind of Man 159. G&M 4486. Wing S6320. Norman catalogue 2040. See Copeman, A Short History of the Gout, pp. 65-75. Major, Classic Descriptions of Disease, pp. 288-289. Meynell, Bibliography, 4.1.8vo, pp. (ix), 201, (1). Title within double ruled border. Good mottled calf antique, spine ruled in gilt with red morocco label, a fine and attractive copy.

CANTELLI GIACOMO.
1683. Incisione in rame, mm 450x580. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 112 Copper engraving, mm 450x580. Good example with trimmed margins and a brown stain at right handside. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 112

GERBEC, Marko; et al...
1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. This rare 17th-century medical book, "Miscellanea Curiosa", is a large collection of essays, treatises, and commentary by various physicians and medical experts from the 16th- and 17th-centuries. This annual periodical, beginning in 1670, was the world's first trade journal to focus on medicine and natural sciences. It was founded by the Academia Naturae Curiosorum, who intended it to serve more as a medical journal. However, into the 17th-century the journal reintroduced more of a focus on other scientific disciplines. The Academy of Natural Sciences is the oldest natural sciences & medicine academy in the German-speaking world and is longest running natural science academy in the world. This volume is predominantly medical, dealing with human and animal anatomies, cures for disease, as well as identifying diseases through symptoms. The incredibly detailed, engraved title page lists six areas of study (Animalia, Mineralia, Vegetabilia, Anatomica, Chymia, Botanica) but the contents elude to an emphasis on medicine. Illustrations and contents include: · Instruments used in brain surgery · Animal skeletons, bones · Human organs, kidneys, lungs · Star and constellation charts · Asthma treatments · Conception - association between sperm and seed, fermentation · Infant colic · Epilepsy, convulsions · Suffocation from hysteria · Magnetism, animal · Melancholy, hypochondria · Tumors · Tuberculosis · Ulcers & hemorrhages. London: Printed by H. H. for William Cademan, 1683. First Edition in English (Krivatsy 11909; Wing T-1775). [8], 185, [7] pp. Pp 66-67 misnumbered 62-63. 6 pages of Cademan publications follow text. Last page blank. Illustrated with 20 inserted copperplate engravings [as required]. 8vo: A^4 B - N^8. F2 mis-signed E2. 6-3/16" x 3-5/8". 19th C brown half-calf binding, with marbled paper boards. Modest wear & rubs to binding. Plates quite sharp, though text with some occasional light staining. Withal, a solid VG - VG+ copy. Item #34646 In its day, Tolet's Treatise a well-regarded work on the subject; initially published in 1681, it was soon translated into English and German, with his work still being published in England in 1723, and in Paris as late as 1758. This English version of Tolet's Treatise one of the earliest books in this language on the subject, preceded only by, our research suggests, a 1677 translation of Groenveldt's Lithologia, and Fabricius Hildanus' Lithotomia Vesicæ, published in 1640. Quite rare on the market, especially complete with all 20 plates, with APBC not having any listings, and AE showing the most recent auction of that by Southeby's, in 1981, an imperfect copy lacking 2 plates. Giovanni Battista FALDA (Valduggia, Novara, 1643; Rome, 1678)
Dimensioni varie, in folio oblungo, margini esterni 465x365." Church of England
1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Unto a Christian man, there can be nothing either more necessary or profitable than the knowledge of Holy Scripture; forasmuch as in it is contained God's true word." - Certain Sermons or Homilies, 'A Fruitful Exhortation to the Reading and Knowledge of Holy Scripture' The Books of Homilies are a set of sermons which developed the reformed doctrines of the Church of England. These sermons were collected into a work entitled "Certain Sermons or Homilies Appointed to Be Read in Churches." Many of the thirty-three sermons are straightforward encouragements to the listener for them to read the Bible and pray every day. Others still are essentially treatises teaching church leaders theology, church history, and heresies within the Catholic Church. Originally, the homilies were published in two books beginning in 1547 concluding in 1571. While the sermons were written and delivered by numerous preachers, the writings in the second portion were mainly written by Bishop John Jewel, whose focus was on teaching on living a model Christian life. This rare 1683 printing of 'Homilies' includes the 39-Articles outlining the doctrines and practices of the Church of England. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

DAMPIER, William.
Hill I, pp. 75-78; Howgego D7; Sabin 18381. First French edition of William Dampier's account of his voyage around the world and especially to the south seas in the years 1683 to 1691. Dampier (1651-1715) sailed to Sierra Leone, from there to the Falkland Islands, Cape Horn, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and further to New Guinea, in the area which was to become known as Dampier Land. He went ashore in Australia, sailed on to Sumatra, the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Europe. Although John Brooke probably shipwrecked on the Australian coast in 1621 without knowing what it was, Dampier was otherwise the first Englishman to set foot in Australia. Dampier had spent several years as a buccaneer, but in the present book he diplomatically made no attempt to exploit the more sensational aspects of his adventures, concentrating on hydrographic, geographic and scientific details. This helped him establish his legitimacy, bringing immediate academic acclaim rather than condemnation as a pirate. With bookplates. The edge of 2 folding plates slightly tattered (not affecting the image) and a few minor marginal stains, but otherwise in very good condition. The bindings with minor stains and worn at the extremities and hinges but still good. First French edition of an account of an important voyage around the world, including the first successful English landing in Australia.

Venedig, 1683. Folio. Later boards. Italian manuscript on paper. (32) lvs. Description of the march out of the Turkish army from Konstantinopel where the plague raged, to Adrianopel, fall 1682. There the Ottoman forces were gathered for the attack on Vienna. The author pictures the outfit of the party, with accompaniment of music and the wonderful decorated vehicles and the refresments "varii rinfreschi di Confetturo, Sorbetti, Caffé, e Tabacchi di più sorti".At the end follows a detailed statistical report of all the participating people, their force, their arms, etc. Hardly ten years later in Matthäus Merian's Theatrum Europaeum, the depart of the army is described the same way: Der Außzug aber war folgender massen beschaffen: Anfangs sahe man eine grosse Anzahl Janitscharen. Diesen folgeten vier tausend Mann von deß Groß-Veziers Leib-Guarde, welche alle halbe Piquen trugen, die oben an den Spitzen kleine Fähnlein von unterschiedlichen Farben hatten, Auff diese kamen sechs tausend junger Mannschafft, in schwarz-gülden Stücken gekleidet (vol. XII, p. 491). March 31 1683 the army consisting of 168.000 men with artillery left Adrianopel with direction Vienna. On July the 15th the second siege began which ended two months later with the relief of the city and the defeat of Kara Mustapha. - Some waterstaining but in all a good copy.

PETRINA, Gabriele.
Praga, Daniel Michalek, 1683.Sm.8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine covered with whitish paint to resemble it to vellum, with title and library classification written on spine. 125,(2) pp.First and only edition. - Gabriel Petrina was a Catholic priest born in Turin, who wrote musical dramas and other poems. This booklet is interesting for Austrian history and its relation with Turkey. In the first section the revolt headed by Count Tököly is described. He heralded the discomfort felt by many Hungarians who saw the Turkish domination, relatively tolerant, being followed by the harsh Austrian one. After his defeat Tököly fled to Turkey. The other sections give a good surver of the military and diplomatic operations around the siege of Vienna. The book is not only a catalogue of battles and heroic deed in defence of the faith, but provides also i.a. descriptions of collections of the Royal Palace and the Imperial Library in Vienna.„Das lange Gedicht ist unmittelbar nach die Belagerung geschrieben worden. [Click Below for Full Description]
