CANTELLI GIACOMO.
1683. Incisione in rame, mm 450x580. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 112 Copper engraving, mm 450x580. Scarce map extending from Sumatra to New Guinea and northern Australia. Singapore Island is identified and interesting details are provided on Spice Islands, Borneo and the Philippines. In lower left corner a large title cartouche, decorated with mermaids, mermen and playful putti. Giacomo Cantelli was born in Vignola, as he remarked with his signature, and was the first official cartographer of the Court of Modena, in 1685, when the Duke Francis II appointed him geographer. Good example with trimmed margins and a brown stain at right handside. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 112

Legatura ottocentesca in mezza-pelle chiara con tiolo, autore e filetti in oro al dorso. Piatti foderati da carta marmorizzata coeva. Qualche strofinatura e difetto. L'ESTRANGE, Sir Roger.:
London, printed for John Holford, at the Crown, in the Pall-Mall, 1683. The first, treats of the priviledges they have by the Edict of Nantes. The second, gives an account of some part of the injuries and outrages they do them, whereby to force them to change their religion. The third, proves that their religion inspires no other principle into them, but an unmoveable loyalty to their prince. The fourth, justifies their innocence against the unjust charge of Monsieur Maimbourg. The fifth, defends them in relation to those troubles that fell out in Lewis XIII. reign, and the affair of Rochel. The last, shews that the papists, by the principles of their religion, are guilty of all the crimes, they wrongfully lay to the Protestants, in reference to kings. PAMPHLET, DISBOUND, 1683, 4to, approximately 200 x 160 mm, 8 x 6¼ inches, pages: [6], 3-31, [1]; 94, lacks last blank leaf, spine ragged with some remains of leather (as it was taken from a volume of pamphlets). "The first two letters are a reissue, with title page and a² cancelled, of: Gentleman at London. The present state of the Protestants in France". "The third letter" (caption title) has separate pagination and register beginning with quire ²B. The last leaf is blank". See ESTC R12993. Title page dusty, small repair to margin of last page, not affecting text, pale staining from page 49 of the 4th letter to end, and affects several pages but mostly the margins, pale age-browning throughout, last 2 pages have small nick to edges, otherwise a good copy. Norris' title plays on the Latin feminine and masculine objects (haec and hic, respectively), referencing the infamous Hic Mulier v Haec Vir pamphlet debate of 1620 that accused women (mulier) of endangering social systems with their masculine (hic) behavior. Here, Norris takes up the cause of women and claims "haec" as a term of empowerment, praising women as "the best of Sexes" and drawing on literary, philosophical, and Biblical traditions to undermine contemporary assumptions about women's inferiority. The accomplishments of women in the face of legal and educational limits, Norris argues, proves their superiority over men. "The sad Fate of Females?they are depriv'd of all means to advance themselves? They climb by Intrusion to Honour and Dignity, not by Title or Merit, not by Rule or Divine Command, but by Strength and might." [Penn, William]
Frankfurt, 1683. [273]-304pp. Gathered signatures, unbound. Lightly tanned. Very good. In a half morocco slipcase. A variant printing of the second German edition of the founding tract of Pennsylvania, William Penn's SOME ACCOUNT OF THE PROVINCE OF PENNSYLVANIA. Penn's description of the new province was first published in London in 1681; there were three English, two German, and one Dutch editions in the next two years, all aimed at stimulating emigration to America. This German edition is a variant of the one described by Bonner & Fraser, and was originally published as part of a German periodical, DIARIUM EUROPAEUM. Penn begins his tract by reviewing successful colonization efforts in history. He then discusses Pennsylvania, "...describing the location, climate, water, soil, and air. He went on to explain how easy it was to reach the Atlantic for trade...products and resources available, and crops that could be raised....in the second section, Penn wrote about how the province would be governed, and promised that no laws would be made or taxes raised without the consent of the freemen. He promised to consult with the first purchasers in writing the constitution. The proprietor then outlined conditions under which land could be obtained....he combined practical information about the opportunities for farmers, craftsmen, and younger sons with a call for men of special spiritual maturity....Penn offered practical advice about the cost of passage, what to take, and how much capital would be needed....in conclusion, Penn asked readers to be realistic about the problems … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORTOISESHELL BINDING/BIBLE/DATHENUS, PETRUS
Dordrecht, Hendrick and Jacob Keur 1683. (engraved titlepage) n.p. Contemporary Tortoiseshell binding with 2 silver clasps, 4 silver hinges and gilt-edged text block, 8° (One small piece chipped off the binding, the metal spine is not contemporary. Dutch church book containing the States Translation of the New Testament, the Psalms -with musical notation- of Petrus Dathenus and the Forms. This edition is uncommon, remarkable is that the quires are alternately counted in eights and tens. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with silver double clasp and 4 hinges. The clasps have straight catches but both the hasps and joints on the spine have an identically cut out pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity. -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century was covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive. This is considered even more for tortoise shells since the shells were not imported in large amounts, due to this the material remained expensive and only available for the rich.)(gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p. 20 e a pag.
