(Charles II, King of England) Lloyd, Sir Philip [Clerk of the Council]
London: printed by the assigns of John Bill deceas'd; and by Henry Hills, and Thomas Newcomb, printers to the Kings most excellen t Majesty, 1683. Printed broadside. Woodcut royal arms at head, large decorative initial capital. 1 vols. 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches. King's Evil and the Royal Touch. From the Middle Ages in England and France it was believed that scrofula, or "the King's Evil," could be cured by the touch of royalty; ceremonies were held in which the King would touch, and "heal," hundreds of afflicted subjects. By the late 1400s it was believed that one could also be cured by touching a type of coin called an angel, which had been touched by the monarch. After angels ceased to be minted in the 1620s the same effect was said to be achieved by touching a gold medallion embossed much like the old coin. Some monarchs touched many people. King Henry IV of France touched up to 1500 at one time. The last English monarch to carry out this practice was Queen Anne, who died in 1714, but it continued in France. Louis XV touched more than 2000 scrofula sufferers, and the last French monarch to do this was Charles X in 1825 (Science Museum, London). Cf. F Barlow, "The King's Evil," The English Historical Review, 95/374 (January 1980), pp 3-27; M Bloch,The Royal Touch: Sacred Monarchy and Scrofula in England and France (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1973). The present broadside, setting the dates for such ceremonies, is rare on the market: no copies are listed for sale, and none have appeared at auction. It also is signed in type by Lord Chief Justice (George) Jeffryes (sic), " … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRUNNER, Johann Conrad.
FIRST EDITION. G&M 3927. The Swiss physician J.J. Brunner came near to discovering pancreatic diabetes. He made experimental excisions of the spleen and pancreas in the dog, keeping the animal alive, with normal digestion, for some time after. He found after one of these excisions that the dog had extreme thirst and polyuria, and Brunner had thereby conducted a pioneer experiment on the internal secretions of the pancreas. Brunner was probably assisted in his experiments by his friend and compatriot J.C. Peyer, who had made the original discovery of the lymphoid follicles in the small intestine in 1677. These two discoveries put paid to the short-lived glory of the role of the pancreatic juice in digestion proposed by Sylvius and De Graaf. Apart from the two treatises by Brunner mentioned in the title, this book also contains a communication by Peyer, and Brunner's answer. For a good account of this work see Ralph H. Major, "Johann Conrad Brunner and his experiments on the pancreas" in Med. Hist., 3rd series, III, 91-100 (1941). Foster, Lectures on the history of physiology, 162-164. ARNALD DE VILLANOVA.
FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of the chemical and alchemical works by, or at least ascribed to, the Catalan physician Arnald de Villanova (c. 1240-1311), consisting of nine parts as listed on the title-page. The Latin titles of the first three works are Rosarius Philosophorum, Novum Lumen, and Flos Florum."Arnald, born in Aragon, Spain, was one of the great authorities among the alchemists. He devoted himself to the study of chemistry, medicine, and physics and also learned Arabic and Greek. It was through him that the full tradition of the Arabian alchemists and their theories entered the mainstream of European thought. His writings were a strange mixture of mysticism and true science, and he accepted the concept of the transmutation of the elements and modified the sulphur-mercury theory of Geber" (Neville I, p. 43, note to the Opera Omnia of 1585).VD17 39:116371H (6 copies). Not in Duveen. Ferguson (I, p. 43) lists the 1748 edition (but it is not in his Books of Secrets); these were probably the only editions of Arnald's chemical works in any vernacular language.

CANTELLI GIACOMO.
1683. Incisione in rame, mm 450x580. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 112 Copper engraving, mm 450x580. Scarce map extending from Sumatra to New Guinea and northern Australia. Singapore Island is identified and interesting details are provided on Spice Islands, Borneo and the Philippines. In lower left corner a large title cartouche, decorated with mermaids, mermen and playful putti. Giacomo Cantelli was born in Vignola, as he remarked with his signature, and was the first official cartographer of the Court of Modena, in 1685, when the Duke Francis II appointed him geographer. Good example with trimmed margins and a brown stain at right handside. Quirino, Philippine Cartography, p. 112

GERBEC, Marko; et al...
1683. This rare 17th-century medical book, "Miscellanea Curiosa", is a large collection of essays, treatises, and commentary by various physicians and medical experts from the 16th- and 17th-centuries. This annual periodical, beginning in 1670, was the world's first trade journal to focus on medicine and natural sciences. It was founded by the Academia Naturae Curiosorum, who intended it to serve more as a medical journal. However, into the 17th-century the journal reintroduced more of a focus on other scientific disciplines. The Academy of Natural Sciences is the oldest natural sciences & medicine academy in the German-speaking world and is longest running natural science academy in the world. This volume is predominantly medical, dealing with human and animal anatomies, cures for disease, as well as identifying diseases through symptoms. The incredibly detailed, engraved title page lists six areas of study (Animalia, Mineralia, Vegetabilia, Anatomica, Chymia, Botanica) but the contents elude to an emphasis on medicine. Illustrations and contents include: · Instruments used in brain surgery · Animal skeletons, bones · Human organs, kidneys, lungs · Star and constellation charts · Asthma treatments · Conception - association between sperm and seed, fermentation · Infant colic · Epilepsy, convulsions · Suffocation from hysteria · Magnetism, animal · Melancholy, hypochondria · Tumors · Tuberculosis · Ulcers & hemorrhages. Lucas Antonio de BEDMAR y Baldivia (Publisher).
Madrid: por Lucas de Bedmar y Baldivia, Impressor de los Reynos de Castilla, y Leon. 8°: 14 pp., [2, license leaf], bound in modern marbled wrappers (Very Good, some old subtle folds, irregular upper blank margin to pp. 13/14 leaf but not affecting text). THE SIEGE OF VIENNA (1683) - SPANISH IMPRINT: A very rare and authoritative contemporary account of how the Spanish Royal Court publicly greeted the arrival of the news of the Christian victory at the Siege of Vienna (1683), including a detailed description of the elaborate cavalcade of King Carlos II to the Royal Convent of Our Lady of Atocha and the reception of the Austrian ambassador at the Buen Retiro Palace, published in Madrid by the royal printer Lucas Antonio Bedmar. The Siege of Vienna of 1683 was one of the great turning points of European history. On September 12 of that year an Austrian-led multinational army lifted the siege which came within a whisker of taking Vienna and likely causing the entire Austrian Empire to fall under Muslim rule. The Christian victory marked the beginning of the end of the Turkish domination of South-eastern Europe, as for the next two centuries the Ottomans progressively lost European territory, never to threaten Central Europe again. For the pious, it represented the divine salvation of Christianity over the aggression of the infidel. The Austrian Emperor Leopold I became the de facto temporal leader of the Catholic cause (while the true hero was the Polish king, Jan III Sobieski, whose timely intervention saved the day). This was something of an embarrassment for the Spanish mon … [Click Below for Full Description]

Melville wrote the 'Memoirs of my own Life', a valuable authority for the history of the period, first published by his grandson, George Scott of Pitlochie, in 1683, from a manuscript discovered at Edinburgh Castle in 1660. Some eighteenth century Scottish historians doubted the authenticity of Scott's publication. Gordon Donaldson notes in Scott (1683) some editing errors and suppression of the more sinister dealings of English government before Mary's condemnation. Mary, Queen of Scots (1542 - 1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was Queen of Scotland from 1542 to 1567. James VI and I (1566 - 1625) was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns until his death. POESIE) PETIT (Pierre).
Paris, Jean Cusson, 1683. in-8. 4ff. 85pp 1f. 214pp. Bon exemplaire. Manque au NUC. Bayle et Tillaye, I, 441-42. [Attributes: First Edition]

[VIANEN, Jan van (illustrator)].
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43. First edition published in the Netherlands of a wholly engraved love emblem book. It contains 45 engraved emblems, with the epigrams in four languages (Latin, Italian, French and Dutch) on the opposite page. Between 1683 and 1714 at least five editions were published at London with the emblems engraved by Philip Ayres, based on the love emblems of Heinsius, Crispyn de Passe's Thronus Cupidinis, and the Amorum Emblemata by Otto Vaenius. The plates of the present edition however, were newly engraved by the Dutch artist Jan van Vianen (ca. 1660-1726), who went to England in his youth. According to Praz, Ayres worked directly from the originals, so his plates were in reverse, while Jan van Vianen probably worked from the Ayres-plates, getting them "right" again. However, Vianen adapted them freely and showed better workmanship and a good sense of perspective which was entirely lacking in Ayres's plates. With bookplates. Only slightly browned with a few small spots and a small tear in the first two leaves. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall a very good copy.

Perrault, Claude.
Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1683. First edition of this influential treatise on the five orders of classical architecture, written by the physician and scientist generally credited with the design of the eastern façade of the Louvre. Perrault's theory of proportion introduced a lasting debate over ideas of positive and arbitrary beauty. In addition to the => six leaves of plates done by Pierre Le Pautre, Louis de Chastillon, and Sebastien Le Clerc, the work is illustrated with several in-text uses of a woodcut diagram comparing the five types, as well as a title-page vignette of the arms of Louis XIV and a distinctively rendered headpiece (signed by Chastillon) of the Colbert serpent coat of arms supported by a dog and a unicorn. And yes, Claude was related to (brother, in fact, of) Charles Perrault, the fabulist and reteller of the Cinderella story and other tales.

SYDENHAM, Thomas.
Londini: Typis R.N. Impensis Gualt. Kettilby, 1683. FIRST EDITION. "Sydenham believed that personal observation and the care of the patient were more important than the discovery of new physiological processes or the formulation of yet another general doctrine... This is essentially the modern view of the task of the practising physician and clinician. This practical outlook inspired Sydenham's numerous monographs on individual diseases... Among Sydenham's special monographs A Treatise on Gout, containing the first distinction between rheumatism and gout, is considered his masterpiece of clinical observation" (PMM). Sydenham's "classic description of the disease, which was based upon his own sufferings, wherein he differentiated finally between gout and rheumatism, has never been surpassed" (Copeman). It is apparently the second monograph in English on gout. Printing and the Mind of Man 159. G&M 4486. Wing S6320. Norman catalogue 2040. See Copeman, A Short History of the Gout, pp. 65-75.

1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. London: Printed by H. H. for William Cademan, 1683. First Edition in English (Krivatsy 11909; Wing T-1775). [8], 185, [7] pp. Pp 66-67 misnumbered 62-63. 6 pages of Cademan publications follow text. Last page blank. Illustrated with 20 inserted copperplate engravings [as required]. 8vo: A^4 B - N^8. F2 mis-signed E2. 6-3/16" x 3-5/8". 19th C brown half-calf binding, with marbled paper boards. Modest wear & rubs to binding. Plates quite sharp, though text with some occasional light staining. Withal, a solid VG - VG+ copy. Item #34646 In its day, Tolet's Treatise a well-regarded work on the subject; initially published in 1681, it was soon translated into English and German, with his work still being published in England in 1723, and in Paris as late as 1758. This English version of Tolet's Treatise one of the earliest books in this language on the subject, preceded only by, our research suggests, a 1677 translation of Groenveldt's Lithologia, and Fabricius Hildanus' Lithotomia Vesicæ, published in 1640. Quite rare on the market, especially complete with all 20 plates, with APBC not having any listings, and AE showing the most recent auction of that by Southeby's, in 1981, an imperfect copy lacking 2 plates.
