DESAGULIERS, John Theophilus.
Second edition in Dutch of a syllabus of lectures by a British natural philosopher, reprinting the first two volumes and adding a third volume that appears here in translation for the first time. The son of Huguenot refugees, Desaguliers (1683-1744) studied at Christ Church, Oxford and succeeded James Keill as lecturer in experimental philosophy at Hart Hall. "Desaguliers' practical abilities aroused the Royal Society's interest soon after his arrival in London ... at Newton's suggestion, he was invited to repeat some of Newton's experiments on heat; before long he had become a de facto curator of experiments" (DSB). Desaguliers was highly skilled in practical mechanics, improving numerous devices, and described and demonstrated a great number of experiments. For the benefit of his audience, Desaguliers published a number of his lectures in 1717 and in 1719 others appeared in an unauthorized edition that Desaguliers denounced. Only in 1734 did the first official volume of lectures appear, including a simple treatment of Newton's system of the world and a description of Ralph Allen's railway in Bath. The second volume appeared in 1746. "Desaguliers attributed the ten-year delay before the appearance of his second tome to his desire to improve the treatment of machines, especially waterwheels ... Continuing with mechanics, in seven lectures, he discussed impact and elasticity, vis viva and momentum, heat, hydrostatics and hydraulics, pneumatics, meteorology, and more machines. This second volume ... entitles Desaguliers to be considered a forerunner of the more advanced knowl … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MILITARIA - VIENNA - SIEGE].
First edition of an extremely rare and possibly unique broadside (the only edition in the original German) printed and published near the end of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, apparently written by (and certainly based on fresh reports by) an eye-witness, published at the most desperate moment of the siege, less than two weeks before Imperial and Polish reinforcements arrived to rescue the city. The report gives background information beginning with the 1664 peace treaty and unsuccessful attempts to renew it in 1682. But it centres on the events unfolding at the time of publication. In addition to details about the progression of the troops, it gives information about the fortifications, about artillery used by both sides and it accuses the Ottomans of barbarous deeds and espionage. It discusses the roles of the Turks, Tatars, Transylvanians, Wallacians and Moldavians. It also reflects recent technological advances, such as the use of a telescope and the Ottoman use of powerful explosive mines to breach the heavily fortified city walls. The band of fleurons at the head of the broadside and the rule at the foot have been partly trimmed off, but the broadside is otherwise in good condition, only slightly tattered at the edges, with a couple creases in the paper and one or two very small holes and spots. Only copy located of an account of the Ottoman siege of Vienna published while it was still in progress.Cf. ESTC R20817 (4 copies of the English translation); Wing P587 (5 copies the English edition); not in Apponyi, Hungarica ... Flugschiften (1969); KVK & WorldCat; VD17.

CHARLES II
1683/4. Printed broadside on two conjoined sheets measuring 555 by 355mm. Historiated initial, woodcut crest, early reinforcement to left margin, which has been trimmed away, old folds. London, Printed by the Assigns of John Bill Deceas'd: And by Henry Hill, and Thomas Newcomb, Printers to the Kings most Excellent Majesty, Rare. This important proclamation seeks to combat some of the ongoing troubles in British waters, specifically from ?Piratical practices, depredations, and Indolencies of Private Men of War.? The first safeguard taken against privateers was to proclaim the neutrality of British harbours with the threat of confiscation of any vessell found in breach. Furthermore, it required that British ships assist any merchant-men attacked by privateers, and added an extra protection to merchant ships whereby Men of War in the service of foreign powers would be detained until said merchants had completed their business and departed those ports. Lastly, British subjects were prohibited from supplying or assisting privateers and from acting on behalf of foreign powers. The late seventeenth century was the beginning of the Golden Age of piracy with the likes of Henry Morgan, William Dampier, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny and Mary Read all active. Moreover, England was constantly braced for attacks from Spain, France and the Netherlands. Proclamations such as this one were thus a necessary part of defending England and its territories. [Click Below for Full Description]

Legatura coeva in piena pergamena molle con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Piccola mancanza al margine superiore del dorso e per il resto esemplare perfetto. Tagli spruzzati in rosso. [Click Below for Full Description]

This version, with the maps re-engraved by Antonie d?Winter, brings together the four books into one volume; it was published anonymously in 1683, but possibly by Simon Ribbius, who used the plates in an 1683 publication. Sanson?s maps represents considerable advances on rival Dutch publications by the Blaeus and Janssonius, popularising French geographical advances, notably from Jesuit sources, particularly in North and South America, but also the misconception of California as an island. BROWNE, John
London: Dorman Newman, 1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Browne was a 17th-century English surgeon who is best remembered for his 'Complete Treatise of the Muscles'. More commonly known as 'Myographia Nova', this work was, unfortunately, nearly a word-for-word plagiarized edition of William Molin's 'Anatomical Administration of all the Muscles of the Humane Body'. Regardless of the origins of the content, Browne's 'Complete Treatise' is a thorough and detailed study of all the muscles and muscle groups in the human body. This 1683 edition features the expected plates found in Giulio Casserio's 'Tabulae Anatomicae'.

1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The laws of nature are but the mathematical thoughts of God" - Euclid A rare and important study on the theories of Euclid. These theories include ancient Greek ideas on mathematics, particularly geometry. This book deals with practices in mathematics, such as finding and using square and cubic measures, as well as finding geometric angles of quadrilaterals. This 1683 'new edition' of the Elements of Euclid, which was originally printed in French in 1672, was edited and improved by Claude-François Milliet de Chales. According to Backer, two editions of Euclid's Elements were published in 1683 by different publishers. However, this edition by Michallet, includes over 100 more pages than the lesser-edition. This printing also includes in-text illustrated figures throughout. [Attributes: First Edition]

KAGAWA, Shuan (or Shutoku), attributed author
1683. Eight full-page drawings & one illus. in the text. 17 folding leaves. 8vo (243 x 165 mm.), orig. blue semi-stiff wrappers (some dampstaining to upper portion of each leaf). [Japan: mid-Edo].Kagawa (1683-1755), a member of the medical family dynasty, studied in Kyoto with Ryozan Goto and Jinsai Ito, from whom he learned moxibustion and the therapeutic value of the waters of hot springs. Kagawa established the successful Ippondo medical school and was one of the most enthusiastic practitioners of moxibustion of his time. There is another manuscript of this text at Kyoto University, attributed to Kagawa. Some of the illustrations are very different. The introductory remarks describe the importance of the precise placement of the moxa on the skin, how to measure the placements based on distance from certain bones or joints of the body, and the various techniques and occasions for moxibustion applications.Following this, the text precisely describes the moxibustion locations on the body and how to locate each one, with references to Simiao Sun's classic text Qian jin fang [Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces], compiled in 650-59. Kagawa lists many diseases and injuries for which moxibustion is appropriate. There is a most interesting section on how to treat unsuccessful moxibustion procedures (application of certain ointments, etc.).The attractive illustrations depict moxibustion loci on an osteological background, and loci on the stomach, arms, legs, and feet.As mentioned above, there is dampstaining to the upper fifth of each leaf, but all the ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

Larger map shows Portugal, hand colored according to the different regions, showing some parts of Spain, as far south as Gibraltar, east as Malaga and Palencia, and north as Astorga. Cities and towns are noted, as well as rivers, bodies of water, roadways, and other topographical features. A large inset in the lower left shows coastal Brazil demonstrating the twelve captaincies, administrative divisions and hereditary fiefs of Portugal in the colony of Terra de Santa Cruz, later called Brazil. Outstanding title cartouchewith a description of areas in the world owned by Portugal. Neptune represents dominion over the sea and the Portuguese Queen, possibly Queen Maria Anna of Austria (1683-1754) who ruled Portugal as regent after her husband, King John V, died in 1742. At the Queen's feet is a map and next to her is a cherub with a cornucopia spilling out coins. Matthaus Seutter the elder (1678-1757) was an engraver, globe maker and map publisher based in Augsburg. He apprenticed with J.B. Homann in Nuremberg and was awarded the title of Imperial Geographer by Karl VI in 1731. This is a wonderful example of his work.

An interesting Plantin-Moretus psalter, customised by an early owner with the addition of four additional (and otherwise unidentified) Latin prayers in manuscript, each terminating 'Requiescant in pace. Amen', suggesting a specific use for the book in offices for the dead. Each of these leaves was marked with a simple vellum tab to the foredge of a preceding leaf (the tabs now mostly missing). By the later seventeenth century, the Plantin press, under Balthasar Moretus III (1646-Antwerp, 8 July 1696) specialised almost entirely in liturgical books such as breviaries, missals, books of hours, and psalters. (Sabbe, 1929, mentioning this edition, p. 120). The blindtooled binding of this copy is now heavily crackled, but shows evidence of an interesting panelled design with portrait medallions and a central cartouche. Besides the existing brass furniture, the lower cover shows evidence of a former oval central metal boss, now lacking (two small nails survive). STCV (Flanders) … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli 1683 RARE The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Published by: Chex Henry Wetstein Printed in: 1683 Pages: 229 ----- Features ----- · Rare Early Printing from 1683 · Frontspiece of the Author Condition The book is in good condition. There are no signatures, bookplates or markings of any kind. The book has been bound in three quarter leather binding. The outside boards have some wear and rubbing, as to be expected given the books age. There is some light foxing. This is an early edition, printed in French by Chex Henry Wetstein in 1683. A rare early copy of Machiavelli's classic. Synopsis The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. The descriptions within The Prince have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes -- such as glory and survival -- can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. "He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation." ---------- About the Author----- … [Click Below for Full Description]
