Bourges, Jacques de & Pallu, Francois
1683 & 1682. Paris. Charles Angot. Two volumes in one, 8vo. Eighteenth-century sang-de-boeuf calf, triple rule gilt border to boards, spine richly gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, expertly recased, some wear to boards, corners very slightly bumped. A fine copy lightly browned, ownership inscription to first title.- A finely bound copy of the first French accounts of Siam –that of Bourges-, with early relations on China, Vietnam, Tonkin and the East Indies. The Bourges is in its third edition and the Pallu in its second edition (all editions are rare). Father de Bourges (c.1630 - 1714) was a member of the first Catholic mission to Siam, arriving with his two fellow missionaries in 1662 to Ayuthaya. Since Siam was tolerant of other religions it became a safe place for the missionaries to establish themselves, and in 1664 a second group led by Monseigneur Pallu joined the fathers in Siam after a two-year journey overland. Francois Pallu (1626 - 1684) was a French Bishop and missionary in Asia and a founding member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society; he was originally recruited by Alexander de Rhodes and sent to the Far East along with other missionaries –namely La Motte. Both volumes together combine a considerable portion of the French knowledge of the East at the end of the 17th century. Distinguished provenance: Charles de Lorraine (possibly Charles III, Duke de Elbeuf), his signature on the first title page. Cordier Sinica, 827.

London - Joanna Brome, 1683 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A collection of eight writings by George Morley, bound in one volume. 'Both before and since the King's Restoration: wherein his judgement is fully made known concerning the Church of Rome and most of those Doctrines, which are controverted betwixt Her and the Church of England. 'First edition. Including a Preface, A Summary of a Short Conference with a Jesuit at Brussels, An Argument drawn from the Evidence and Certainty of Sense against Transubstantiation, A Vindication of the Argument drawn from the Sense against Transubstantiation, a Sermon preached before the King at Whitehall, Nov. 5, 1667 and three letters and several texts in Latin to rear followed by a Postscript. George Morley D. D. (1597 - 1684) was an English bishop. His works are few and chiefly polemical. In 1641 he was made canon of Christ Church, Oxford and exchanged to the rectory of Mildenhall, Wiltshire. He preached before the House of Commons in 1642, but his sermon gave offence, and when in 1647 he took a prominent part in resisting the parliamentary visitation of Oxford University he was deprived of his canonry and living. Leaving England, he joined the court of King Charles II, and became one of the leading clergy at The Hague. Shortly before the Restoration he came to England on a highly successful mission to gain for Charles the support of the Presbyterians. In 1660, he regained his canonry, and soon became Dean of Christ Church. In the same year, he was consecrated Bishop of Worcester. At the Savoy Conference of 1661 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hennepin, Louis:
Paris: Chez la Veuve Sebastian Hure, 1683.. [12],312,107pp. plus folding map. 12mo. Contemporary French calf, spine richly gilt in six compartments, raised bands, gilt title on spine, marbled paper pastedowns, edges of text block speckled. Boards lightly worn. Front and rear free endpapers with very slight worming (but no worming to text leaves). Two closed tears in the map near the gutter (one of three inches, the other of two inches; both confined to the cartouche), neatly mended and with no loss. Very clean and fresh internally. A handsome copy. The first book by the famous Recollet missionary and explorer, Father Louis Hennepin, and a foundation work of Canadiana and Americana, particularly for the Great Lakes region. Unlike some of Hennepin's later works, the truthfulness of his narrative herein is accepted by historians. Hennepin accompanied the great French explorer, the Sieur de la Salle, on his 1678-79 expedition from Fort Frontenac to Niagara, then on to the Illinois country where Hennepin was directed to explore further on his own. He ultimately ascended the Mississippi River as far as the Falls of St. Anthony, near where he was captured by the Sioux and held for some time before being released. This book is the narrative of all these adventures, and is notable for its many "firsts": the first use of the name "Louisiana"; the first good account of the Illinois country and upper Mississippi; the first detailed account of the Sioux; and the first navigation of the Great Lakes. The map, titled "Carte de la Nouuelle France et de La Louisiane Nouuellement Découuer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kaidanover, Aaron Samuel [ Shmuel ] (c. 1614-1676)
[Publisher unkonwn], Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 1683. Title printed within typographical border. The author was one of the foremost Talmudic scholars and preachers of his generation. After the Chmielnicki massacres of 1648-49, he fled to Vilna where he became a member of the Beth Din of the Chelkath Mechokek together with the Shach, R. Shabbetai He-kohen and the Shaar Ephraim, the grandfather of R. Yaakov Emden. Subsequently he served as Rabbi of many important communities, including Cracow, Brisk and Frankfurt. His major works include Breath Malevich on Kodashim; Birkath Shmuel, kabbalistic sermons; Tifereth Shmuel on the Rosh, and others. Many of his reponsa are cited as a basis for rulings by later authorities until the present. One of his controversial rulings here is responsum number 26, where he states that although in the times of the Talmud one teacher sufficed for 25 pupils, in this generation "when our hearts have been reduced to the size of hole in a thin needle," it would be preferable that the equivalent of ten, or at most 12 students would be properly supervised. 64 leaves. Running title: She'elot teshuvot Emunat Shemu'el. This book was published by the author's son, Zvi, after his father's death. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Saint Augustine
Paris - Chec Pierre le Petit, 1683 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. An extremely scarce seventeenth-century French translation of Saint Augustine's sermons on the psalms. In French. With vignette titles, decorative head and tail pieces and capitals. With tables of the key things in each volume to the rears. Augustine of Hippo (November 13, 354 August 28, 430), also known as Augustine, St. Augustine, was a Latin philosopher and theologian from Roman Africa. His writings were very influential in the development of Western Christianity. According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine established anew the ancient Faith. After his conversion to Christianity and baptism in AD 387, Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and different perspectives. He believed that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, and he framed the concepts of original sin and just war. When the Western Roman Empire was starting to disintegrate, Augustine developed the concept of the Catholic Church as a spiritual City of God (in a book of the same name), distinct from the material Earthly City. His thoughts profoundly influenced the medieval worldview. Augustine's City of God was closely identified with the Church, the community that worshipped God. In the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, he is a saint and pre-eminent Doctor of the Church, and the patron of the Augustinian religious order; his memorial is celebrated 28 August, the day of his death. He is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, the alleviation of … [Click Below for Full Description]

CUBERO SEBASTIAN, Pietro / Serna y Molina, Francesco de la, Tr
Naples: Carlo Porsile, 1683. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to.. (7) ff., including engraved title, letter press title, engraved portrait of dedicatee (Gusman) and author portraits (all signed by the Neapolitan? engraver Giuseppe Criscolo), 339 pp., (2) ff. Bound in contemporary flexible vellum, covers a bit soiled and some minor worming to joints (but sound). Scattered toning and foxing; tear to lower right corner of Bb2, grazing a single letter. Otherwise, a fresh, genuine copy. Very rare first Italian edition of this celebrated travel account, the first circumnavigation of the world from West to East (Pires, Travel Accounts of the Islands, p 19). Pedro Cubero (1645-ca 1697) traveled mainly by land rather than by sea, and was certainly one of the earliest circumnavigators to travel independently rather than assisted by a retinue or his own ship. The final leg of his journey takes Cubero overland from Acapulco to Veracruz, and includes much detail on the religious activities and settlements in New Spain. After studying in Zaragoza and Salamanca, Cubero set off for Rome at the age of 25, where he joined the Propaganda Fide. For the next 9 years he would travel the world in his capacity as an itinerant missionary or predicador apostolico, traversing Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia including Iran, India, and China. Eventually finding himself in the Philippines in June of 1678, Cubero gained passage aboard a ship bound for Mexico, where he made landfall after a journey of some four months. HAPPEL, Eberhard Werner
Hamburg,: Thomas von Wiering, 1683-, 1691.. Five volumes, quarto, 196 engraved and woodcut plates (some folding), title-pages printed in red and black, woodcut textual illustrations and initials; bound in contemporary vellum, titles lettered on spine, a few plates trimmed, some browning and spotting, but generally a very attractive set. A fine set of Happel's remarkable book of wonders, an endlessly informative series filled with the newest and most sensational news from around the world: 'a miscellany of popular information, containing short notices of curious phenomena in every part of the globe, as well as of curious historical events. The notices of American matters are numerous in all the volumes' (Sabin).Among the many wonders here described, the double-page map of the world showing ocean currents is particularly notable. Showing the entire globe from Greenland in the north to the "S¸d-Land", this map is a good instance of popular interest in the mapping of the world, including the putative outline of Terra Australis: 'an important early representation of oceanographic phenomena. It illustrates Kircher's idea that there are chasms in the depths of the sea into which the water flows, then percolates through the earth and up to the tops of mountains' (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich).Happel (1647-1690) was a writer and journalist, and one of the most-widely read novelists of his time. His so-called "endless novels" with their picaresque attention to detail relied on his omnivorous fascination with social history, scientific discovery, and other novelties from around … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giacomo CANTELLI (Vignola 1643 - 1695)
542x395. The map extends from Burma to the Mariannas and northern Australia. The coastline of northern Australia is shown with considerable detail based on the discoveries of Abel Tasman. Some of the names in northern Australia however are also derived from Marco Polo. Singapore Island is identified and interesting detail is provided on the Spice Islands, Borneo and the Philippines. In lower left hand corner a large title cartouche, decorated with mermaids, mermen and playful putti. Norimbergae, G. Scheurer, 1683. Small-4to (198 x 163mm). pp. (6), 133, (15), with engraved frontispiece and 5 engraved folded plates. Contemporary half vellum, spine with red gilt lettered label, marbled sides. First book on salamanders. The present work is an expanded version of the author's dissertation 'Salamandra', published in 1677. "He dissected salamanders and described the food contents in the stomach. He confirmed that 'Salamandra' is live bearing and found 34 larvae in one female. He also observed the shedding of the animal's epidermis. And he proceeded to rebunk most of the prevailing myths... The plates illustrate the external appearance of several species, the larvae, eggs, skeleton, internal organs including the urogenital system, and mythical figures from emblems and hieroglyphics. The two titles represent the first comprehensive basis for our modern understanding of salamander biology' (Adler 2, p. 18). J.P. Wurffbain (1655-1711) was a German physician. Without the leaf 'directions to binder' which is often discarded by the bookbinder. Nissen ZBI, 4485.

CHRISTIAN V -
Prentet i Kiøbenhavn af Joachim Schmedtgen, Aar 1683. (30)+1014+(86) s. Trykkeriet virkede li … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed by H. H. for William Cademan, 1683. First Edition in English (Krivatsy 11909; Wing T-1775). 19th C brown half-calf binding, with marbled paper boards. Modest wear & rubs to binding. Plates quite sharp, though text with some occasional light staining. Withal, a solid VG - VG+ copy.. [8], 185, [7] pp. Pp 66-67 misnumbered 62-63. 6 pages of Cademan publications follow text. Last page blank. Illustrated with 20 inserted copperplate engravings [as required]. 8vo: A^4 B - N^8. F2 mis-signed E2. 6-3/16" x 3-5/8" In its day, Tolet's Treatise a well-regarded work on the subject; initially published in 1681, it was soon translated into English and German, with his work still being published in England in 1723, and in Paris as late as 1758. This English version of Tolet's Treatise one of the earliest books in this language on the subject, preceded only by, our research suggests, a 1677 translation of Groenveldt's Lithologia, and Fabricius Hildanus' Lithotomia Vesicæ, published in 1640. Quite rare on the market, especially complete with all 20 plates, with APBC not having any listings, and AE showing the most recent auction of that by Southeby's, in 1981, an imperfect copy lacking 2 plates.

Mark Catesby
A very detailed hand colored engraving by Mark Catesby (1683-1749 from his breathtaking series "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands". This print is from the Third edition, published in London in 1731-44 [1771]. Overall this print is 14” x 20”. In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. When Catesby returned to England from his final voyage to America in 1726, he was unable to afford the expense of having his drawings engraved professionally. Undeterred, he taught himself to etch with the assistance of Joseph Goupy, a French artist living in London, and went on to produce all but a few of the plates for his publication. He scrupulously monitored the coloring of the engravings, either painting the impressions himself or closely supervising the work to insure its fidelity to his preparatory studies. The result of Catesby’s tenacious effort was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Widely considered a crowning achievement of 18t … [Click Below for Full Description]
