The earliest portrayal of this scene is a hellenistic marble relief probably made in Alexandria by Archelaus of Priene ca. 225-250 B.C. The marble of singular beauty, which is now in the British Museum, was found in Frottachia in Italy in 1658. The scene depicts the apotheosis of Homer, who is wellcomed at Mount Olympus by the Muses, some allegorical figures, gods and goddesses. Immediately after its discovery the Florentine painter Io. Bapt. Galostruccius made a magnificent engraving of the stone; This clear engraving fills the first folding plate. The other folding plate depicts a gemma with a triumphus-scene: an emperor with wife and 2 children in a chariot drawn by 2 centaurs; The Dutch classical scholar Gisbertus Cuperus, or Gijsbert Kuiper, (1644-1716) was professor of Latin and Greek literature at t … [Click Below for Full Description]

. . [Siege of Vienna].
Vienna, 1683.. Folio (280 x 190 mm). 70 ff. Italian ink ms. on paper, with a rare engraved folding map of the siege of Vienna by Johann van Ghelen (1684). 19th-century Italian blue sponged marbled boards.. A remarkable, apparently unpublished manuscript chronicle of the 1683 Siege of Vienna by the Turks, which marked the turning point in the 300-year struggle between the forces of the Central European kingdoms and the Ottoman Empire and cemented the Habsburgs power. The manuscript begins with a historical account and background, touching on the problems of religious liberty, the Hungarian resentment against German domination, and other problems which led to the interference of the Turks and their aggression against the West. The chronicle continues in great detail, almost in the form of a contemporary diary, providing a day-by-day account of the unfolding events from 1 August 1683 until the end of the siege when the defeat of the Turkish army at Vienna became the turning point in the long East-West struggle. The story gives, among other things, detailed figures of the strength of the Christian and Turkish forces, listing all regiments with their commanders and the number of troops. The pagination, which despite being a self-contained account begins on 131, and the legible uncorrected script, indicate this was likely prepared for publication in a larger work. Includes(before f. 160) a rare engraved folding map of the siege of Vienna from Johann van Ghelen's "Relazione compendiosa e veridica del famoso assedio dell'imperiale citta di Vienna, attaccata da Turchi li 14. di lugl … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAPPEL, Eberhard Werner
Hamburg: Thomas von Wiering, 1683-, 1691. Five volumes, quarto, 196 engraved and woodcut plates (some folding), title-pages printed in red and black, woodcut textual illustrations and initials; bound in contemporary vellum, titles lettered on spine, a few plates trimmed, some browning and spotting, but generally a very attractive set. The wonders of the world. A fine set of Happel's remarkable book of wonders, an endlessly informative series filled with the newest and most sensational news from around the world: 'a miscellany of popular information, containing short notices of curious phenomena in every part of the globe, as well as of curious historical events. The notices of American matters are numerous in all the volumes' (Sabin). Among the many wonders here described, the double-page map of the world showing ocean currents is particularly notable. Showing the entire globe from Greenland in the north to the "Süd-Land", this map is a good instance of popular interest in the mapping of the world, including the putative outline of Terra Australis: 'an important early representation of oceanographic phenomena. It illustrates Kircher's idea that there are chasms in the depths of the sea into which the water flows, then percolates through the earth and up to the tops of mountains' (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich). Happel (1647-1690) was a writer and journalist, and one of the most-widely read novelists of his time. His so-called "endless novels" with their picaresque attention to detail relied on his omnivorous fascination with social history, sc … [Click Below for Full Description]
