A variant of this edition lacks the name of Awnsham Churchill in the imprint (Wing W1538).

[KOLCZYCKI, JERZY FRANCISZEK (KOLTSCHITZKY, FRANZ GEORG)]:
Small 4to. Pp. (8). With engraved plate depicting a portrait of the author in his Turkish disguise and with the city of Vienna in the background. Contemporary limp vellum, covers ruled and decorated in gilt with fleur - de - lis. Bookplate (Paul de Fleury). Originally published in Vienna 1683. A scarce news pamphlet which tells the story of Kulczycki (1640 - 94), a Polish Lithuanian nobleman who was considered a hero for his actions during the Battle of Vienna in 1683. He volunteered as courier of Prince Starhemberg, the commanadant of Vienna, to make contact with the forces of Duke Charles of Lorraine. Disguised as a Turkish soldier Kulczycki left Vienna and managed to cross the enemy lines to meet the Duke, and then return to Vienna with a promise of imminent relief. Because of his message the defenders held out until the allied armies relieved the city on September 12 1683. The text follows with information about Kulczycki's dealings with coffee. According to a legend Kulczycki, as a reward, was allowed to keep large quantities of coffee beans left behind by the beaten Turks as personal booty. He was the founder of the first coffee house in Vienna called "Hof zur Blauen Flasche". Hünersdorff, Coffee Bibl., pp 815 - 6 (a copy with slightly different engraved portrait; also forming the title).

Augustinus, Aurelius:
Paris, Muguet, 1683-1700.. Zus. ca. 20000 S.. Mit Frontispiz (Porträt) in Bd 11, 12 Titelvignetten, 12 gestochenen Kopfleisten, 12 gestochenen Initialen. Gr.-Folio (414 x 266 mm). Bandes: "Der 11. Vgl. Brunet I, 557. Zögern Sie bitte nicht, wenn Sie Fragen haben oder z. B. (Charles II, King of England) Lloyd, Sir Philip [Clerk of the Council]
London: printed by the assigns of John Bill deceas'd; and by Henry Hills, and Thomas Newcomb, printers to the Kings most excellen t Majesty, 1683. Printed broadside. Woodcut royal arms at head, large decorative initial capital. 1 vols. 14-1/2 x 11-1/4 inches. King's Evil and the Royal Touch. From the Middle Ages in England and France it was believed that scrofula, or "the King's Evil," could be cured by the touch of royalty; ceremonies were held in which the King would touch, and "heal," hundreds of afflicted subjects. By the late 1400s it was believed that one could also be cured by touching a type of coin called an angel, which had been touched by the monarch. After angels ceased to be minted in the 1620s the same effect was said to be achieved by touching a gold medallion embossed much like the old coin. Some monarchs touched many people. King Henry IV of France touched up to 1500 at one time. The last English monarch to carry out this practice was Queen Anne, who died in 1714, but it continued in France. Louis XV touched more than 2000 scrofula sufferers, and the last French monarch to do this was Charles X in 1825 (Science Museum, London). Cf. F Barlow, "The King's Evil," The English Historical Review, 95/374 (January 1980), pp 3-27; M Bloch,The Royal Touch: Sacred Monarchy and Scrofula in England and France (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1973). The present broadside, setting the dates for such ceremonies, is rare on the market: no copies are listed for sale, and none have appeared at auction. It also is signed in type by Lord Chief Justice (George) Jeffryes (sic), " … [Click Below for Full Description]

VAENIUS, Otto; Horace; VEEN, Otto van
1683. VAENIUS (i.e. Otto van Veen). Quinti Horatii Flacci emblemata.... [8], 205, [3] pp. With a title-page medallion portrait of Horace, full-page portrait of Veen, and 103 engraved emblems (180 x 150 mm) inspired by texts of Horace and others. 4to., 280 x 225 mm, bound in contemporary vellum, spine lettered in MS, preserved in a green slipcase. Brussels: Franciscum Foppens, 1683. |~||~||~||~||~||~| An excellent copy in original condition of this lavish Flemish emblem book, with the text and plates here reprinted from the enlarged edition of 1612. The engravings are attributed by Nagler and Bryan to Gijsbert van Veen; there are 103 full-page copperplate emblems after designs by Vaenius (Otto van Veen), a teacher of Rubens. The emblems illustrate the texts he selected principally from Horace's Odes and Satires, as well as from other classic authors. The first edition of Veen's "Emblems from Horace" was published in Antwerp in 1607 and contained Latin mottos and quotations only. In the present edition appear Dutch 8-line stanzas by Vaenius, French quatrains (by Leo de Meyere & Claudius de Cordemoy, and 8-line poems in Italian. The Brussels Foppens editions first appeared in 1682; the present volume belongs to a new-title issue of the work (only the date of imprint is changed). Vaenius' "Emblemata Horatiana" was immensely popular, and versions of it exist in almost every European language. Veen (1556-1629), of Leiden origin, is, together with Heinsius, Hooft, Roemer Visscher and Cats, among the most important Dutch emblematists of the 17th-century. His "Emblems from Horace" w … [Click Below for Full Description]
