PASCAL, Blaise [1623-1662]
Guillaume Desprez / Abraham Wolfgang, 1683, 1684, Paris. Pp. [lv], 356, [20]; [iv], 143, [3]; [iv], 12; 49, [3]. Contemporary full calf, densely gilt spine in compartments between raised bands, red morocco lettering piece, gilt, marbled pastedowns (front and rear free endpapers removed). Extremities rubbed, spine gilt dulled, foot of spine eroded, old ink notations to front endpapers, name in old ink on title, worm hole to lower margin of first fifty pages or so, otherwise a nice clean copy. Pascal's "Pensées", a series of religious meditations compiled from fragments of the author's notes, was first published eight years after his death, in 1670, with a preface by his nephew Etienne Périer. In addition to the "Pensées", the present edition reprints the "Discours sur les Pensées" by Jean Filleau de la Chasse, and also includes the First Edition of the Life of Pascal published by his sister Mme Périer in 1684. Pascal's work was designed as apology for Christianity against the scepticism of the age. He counters the rationalism of the philosophes with a deeper scepticism regarding the limitations of reason itself, offering in place of reason the revelations and insights of his personal experience, the "reasons of the heart" of which reason knows nothing.

MANESSON-MALLET, Allain
Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683. unbound. Miniature map. Copper plate engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 3 7/8" x 4 7/8". Sheet measures 8 1/4" x 5 1/2". This lovely miniature map of the historical region of Anatolia, or Asia Minor, is from the original French edition of Manesson-Mallet's "Description de L'Univers." The map depicts the region between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea that mainly includes Turkey. A figured title cartouche appears at the bottom and features flags and inhabitants of the area. Decorative yellow border. The map is in good condition with aged coloring and a small hole in the upper right corner margin, not affecting the image. Text on verso. Allain Manesson-Mallet (1630-1706) advanced from his position of musket bearer under Louis XIV to eventually occupy the position of "maitre de mathematiques" to the French King. He was the author and engraver of "Description de L'Univers," a five-volume survey of the world that included maps of the ancient and modern world, star maps, illustrations of flora and fauna, and information on the customs, religion and government of the many nations included in the text. When it was published, the text was the largest and most comprehensive work of its type. Intended to entertain its readers, Mallet's "Description" was a time capsule of the 17th-century world that captured and displayed it in all its splendor.

[Click Below for Full Description]
