[Leipzig: Commercial Law; Leipziger Juden-Ordnung]
[Leipzig]; Christolph Günther, 1683. Boards bound with Latin missal with musical notation. 16mo. (4) , 132, 4 pages. Only edition. In German. A compendium of regulations of the City of Leipzig. Of special interest are the edicts concerning Jews: "Leipziger Juden-Ordnung de anno 1682." The relationship between this city in Saxony and the Jews is an anomaly. On the one hand, Jews were banished from Saxony in 1430 - (it took three centuries for them to be readmitted to Leipzig) . On the other hand, on account of the seasonal Leipzig Fair, the number of Jewish merchants present in the City would swell to the point that these visitors were formally authorized to conduct gatherings in their own prayer-rooms ("Judenschulen") . Indeed, permitted to attend the Fair were not only German Jews, but Jews of Eastern Europe as well. In the present text, Johann-Georg III, Duke of Saxony, mandates several laws concerning Jewish tradesmen and the nature of Jewish participation in the Fair. In order to attend, the Jew required attestation to his professional honesty ("ein Ehrlicher Handelsmann") (par. 1) ; he was forbidden to lodge in the suburbs (par. 2) ; and at all times, he must be in possession of his various individual passes (pars. 3-6) . Also, legal-clauses are addressed to the wives, children and servants of the Jewish tradesmen visiting (pars.10-12) . Of peculiar note: Jewish musicians were barred from trading altogether (par. 21) . See JE, Vol. VII, pp. 673-4. Subjects: German Law. Books before 1700. OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide. Backstrip detached. Binding very solid. Paper miss … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter Mayle (Autor), Gerard Auzet (Autor), Ursula Bischoff (Übersetzer)
Blessing, 1683. [Click Below for Full Description]

HUNT, Thomas.
Printed and are to be sold, by Richard Baldwin near the Black Bull in the Old-Bailey. [1683] Tear to top outer corner E4 not touching text, titlepage dusted, with old water mark, some faint waterstaining at head of pp14-22. Bound in recent half calf, marbled boards, gilt lettered spine. [2], 46pp.ESTC R226384, noting two issues, in this one the title words 'City of London' are in roman type. Another edition has 'City of London' in black letter type. 'In January 1683 Hunt established himself as the champion of the City of London's liberties with the publication of a fierce, impassioned diatribe against the court's quo warranto proceedings that threatened to take away London's City charter. Hunt's Defence of the Charter lashed out against the Duke of York and his minions. Once the popish successor became king, Hunt asserted, the governments of all the once corporate towns, whose charters were lost, would be put in the hands of the papists whose ultimate aim was the extirpation of the Protestant religion. Hunt's Defence also contained an attack on the playwrights John Dryden and Nathaniel Lee. Hunt claimed that their play, The Duke of Guise (1682) was a political parallel ... and encouraged the assassination of Monmouth. Dryden, a royalist, published a response declaring that while 'there was no parallel intended', his play did present a 'glass which showed them [the Whigs] their own faces'. The lawyer Hunt, quipped Dryden, must certainly be 'cracked and if he should return to England ... his only prison might be bedlam'.' (M.S. Zook. Radical Whigs and Conspiratori … [Click Below for Full Description]

CANTELLI GIACOMO
1683. Incisione in rame, mm 530x410. Copper engraving, mm 530x410. Highly fascinating example in extremely decorative antique colouring of this scarce map extending from Sumatra to the Bengala river and China river. Modern day countries include India, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaya. Showing the major rivers, mountains and cities. In bottom right corner a decorative cartouche, surmounted with two figures in Asian garb and a leopard. From Il Mercurio Geografico, printed by De Rossi. Giacomo Cantelli was born in Vignola, as he remarked with his signature, and was the first official cartographer of the Court of Modena, in 1685, when the Duke Francis II appointed him geographer. Very good condition with some minor marginal foxing and waterstaining

Giacomo CANTELLI (Vignola 1643 - 1695)
Uncommon map of Transilvania, from "Mercurio Geografico", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. The Italian cartographer Cantelli introduced a style in cartography that was followed and developed by Coronelli: his maps are very attractive and finely engraved, with elaborate strapworks and decorations. Tschirnhaus, Ehrenfried Walther v.
Acta Eruditorum, 1683/ 5. - Leipzig, Grossium & Gleditsch, Mai 1683, 4°, pp.177-224, feine Broschur. First Print of "Methodus auferendi omnes terminos intermedios ex data aequatione per D.T." "Although many - often tangential - accounts of his abilities, accomplishments, and his appreciation of contemporary scientific developments are unsympathetic, a less dismissive contrarian view of his contributions has begun to emerge. By no means a leading figure in the scientific revolution engendered by the development of calculus. Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus (1651-1708) nevertheless bequeathed some noteworthy results that carry his name. In the theory of equations, Tschirnhaus transformations are employed to eliminate certain lower order terms from a polynomial p(t) of degree n. Tschirnhaus proposed this method in his paper "Methodus auferendi omnes terniinos intermedios ex data aequatione," or Method of eliminating all intermediate terms from a given equation,2 published in the Acta Ernditorum of May 1683."
