The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli 1683 RARE The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Published by: Chex Henry Wetstein Printed in: 1683 Pages: 229 ----- Features ----- · Rare Early Printing from 1683 · Frontspiece of the Author Condition The book is in good condition. There are no signatures, bookplates or markings of any kind. The book has been bound in three quarter leather binding. The outside boards have some wear and rubbing, as to be expected given the books age. There is some light foxing. This is an early edition, printed in French by Chex Henry Wetstein in 1683. A rare early copy of Machiavelli's classic. Synopsis The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. The descriptions within The Prince have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes -- such as glory and survival -- can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. "He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation." ---------- About the Author----- … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

BURNET, Gilbert
London: Richard Chiswell, 1681, 1683. 3 volume set bound in 6, 18 inches tall. A fabulous full straight grain morocco by Staggemeier and Welcher (and with their ticket) with twin gilt raised bands and superb, delicate gilt tooling to the panels. The boards have triple gilt flllets and splendid gilt corner tooling so typical of the finest work of the late eighteenth century. Gilt tooled dentelles and all edges. Staggemeier & Welcher were part of a group of German bookbinders including Baumgarten, Walther, Hering and Kalthoeber who reinvigorated the London trade and produced bindings of the very finest quality during this period. These volumes are of that quality and are in exceptional condition though the spines are somewhat faded by the sun. Internally the set is spotless. With the bookplate of John Charles Crowle and later from the library of Morningthorpe Manor. This set was bound and extra-illustrated in 1798 with 472 plates, as well as the 16 plates called for. Many of the plates are exceptional, and include fine examples by Hollar, Kip, Houbarken, Bartalozzi and Houston, obviously none later than the 18th century. Gilbert Burnet wrote this great history of the Reformation, covering the reigns of King Henry VIII and of Queen Elizabeth. Volumes 1 and 2 are the second, corrected edition, volume 3 is the first edition. For generations this was the definitive work on this most traumatic period of English history which marked the destruction of a thousand years of Monastic history and led to the Church of England breaking away from the authority of the Pope and the … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAZART, Cornelius
T'Antwerpen: Michiel Knobbaert, by het professen-huys in S. Pee, 1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Cornelius Hazart was a 17th-century Dutch Jesuit priest and controversialist writer. His "Ecclesiastical History of the Whole World" delivered on the 'controversial' side of church history, as Hazart explored some of the most detestable acts of the church including tortures, imprisonments, wars on religion, and brutal executions, such as drowning, hangings, beheadings, and burnings. This 1683 Dutch printing is taken from the first Antwerp edition from 1667. This book covers church history throughout Europe, including Germany, France, Netherlands, and England, with parts dedicated to the Americas and Africa. This universal church history is unquestionably Hazart's greatest work and is ideal for historical perspective on Jesuit missions and missionaries around the world, as well as martyrs throughout church history.

London: printed for Thomas Dring, 1683. Small quarto (205 x 155 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes in margins. 5 cm repaired closed tear to title page, title and terminal page soiled, title page and a few other leaves with very light paper faults at extremities without affecting text, generally clean internally with a few sporadic fox marks. A good copy. First edition. The Tory Church of England clergyman John Nalson (1637-1686) "was a prolific writer as well as a country clergyman and his platform, in his own words, was consistently that of a 'true Church of England King's Protestant'. Nalson unswervingly indulged these convictions in a stream of publications which gushed forth in the unsettled years 1677 to 1685. His style was trenchant, hard-hitting, polemical, vivid, and vitriolic" (ODNB). The present publication is part of his anti-Whig writings, claiming that they are republican conspirators, which he ties into tirades against popery, and his own proposals for England. ESTC R16235.

VIANEN, Jan van (illustrator)].
1683. First edition published in the Netherlands of a wholly engraved love emblem book. It contains 45 engraved emblems, with the epigrams in four languages (Latin, Italian, French and Dutch) on the opposite page. Between 1683 and 1714 at least five editions were published at London with the emblems engraved by Philip Ayres, based on the love emblems of Heinsius, Crispyn de Passe's Thronus Cupidinis, and the Amorum Emblemata by Otto Vaenius. The plates of the present edition however, were newly engraved by the Dutch artist Jan van Vianen (ca. 1660-1726), who went to England in his youth. According to Praz, Ayres worked directly from the originals, so his plates were in reverse, while Jan van Vianen probably worked from the Ayres-plates, getting them "right" again. However, Vianen adapted them freely and showed better workmanship and a good sense of perspective which was entirely lacking in Ayres's plates. With bookplates. Only slightly browned with a few small spots and a small tear in the first two leaves. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall a very good copy.Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43. [Attributes: First Edition]
