MALLET, Allain Manesson
Denys, Thierry, Paris 1683 - Engraved title-page, headpieces and decorated initials, complete with all engraved plates, maps and tables, privilege and errata. Contemporary calf, some rubbing and chipping, raised bands, spines gilt; a few plates toned, but overall a good and sound copy. First edition of the "Americas" volume of Mallet's encyclopedic work with the famous engraved map showing California as an island on page 271, plus significant useful information on history, geography and ethnology. This volume completes his work on Europe, which started with Volume 4, and includes the British Isles, as well as North and South America. The final part features many views and maps including Canada, Virginia, Florida, Mexico, California. He provides a wide variety of information, including maps of the ancient and modern world, and a synopsis of the customs, religion and government of the nations included in his text. Mallet clearly intends to entertain his readers. We find charming harbor scenes and rural landscapes that are included beneath his description of astronomical concepts and diagrams. Mallet himself drew most of the figures that were engraved for this book.Of the original five volumes, the first treats general cosmographical matters, the world and arctic regions, the second treats Asia, the third Africa, and the fourth Europe.Manesson-Mallet (1630-1706) was a French cartographer and military engineer. After a career in the army of Louis XIV, he served under the King of Portugal. Returned to France he taught mathematics at to the court of Louis XIV. Bohn, Johannes
Acta Eruditorum, 1683/ 9. - Leipzig, Grossium & Gleditsch, September 1683, 4°, pp.369-416, 1 gefalt. Kupferstichtafel, feine Broschur. Erstdruck! Johannes Bohn, "Arzt, geb. 20. I. 497. Bibl. pract.

These sermons were collected into a work entitled “Certain Sermons or Homilies Appointed to Be Read in Churches.” Many of the thirty-three sermons are straightforward encouragements to the listener for them to read the Bible and pray every day. Others still are essentially treatises teaching church leaders theology, church history, and heresies within the Catholic Church. Originally, the homilies were published in two books beginning in 1547 concluding in 1571. While the sermons were written and delivered by numerous preachers, the writings in the second portion were mainly written by Bishop John Jewel, whose focus was on teaching on living a model Christian life. This rare 1683 printing of ‘Homilies’ includes the 39-Articles outlining the doctrines and practices of the Church of England.
