LEMERY (Nicolas)

FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of the chemical and alchemical works by, or at least ascribed to, the Catalan physician Arnald de Villanova (c. 1240-1311), consisting of nine parts as listed on the title-page. The Latin titles of the first three works are Rosarius Philosophorum, Novum Lumen, and Flos Florum. "Arnald, born in Aragon, Spain, was one of the great authorities among the alchemists. He devoted himself to the study of chemistry, medicine, and physics and also learned Arabic and Greek. It was through him that the full tradition of the Arabian alchemists and their theories entered the mainstream of European thought. His writings were a strange mixture of mysticism and true science, and he accepted the concept of the transmutation of the elements and modified the sulphur-mercury theory of Geber" (Neville I, p. 43, note to the Opera Omnia of 1585). VD17 39:116371H (6 copies). Not in Duveen. Ferguson (I, p. 43) lists the 1748 edition (but it is not in his Books of Secrets); these were probably the only editions of Arnald's chemical works in any vernacular language.Small, 8vo, pp. (xvi), 350, 1 leaf (blank). Eighteenth century half sheep, spine richly gilt in compartments, red morocco label, a fine copy. Bookplates of the Safstaholms Library and Gustaf Berndtsson.

"This narrative of his adventures is one of the most interesting in the entire range of the pathetic stories of Christian slavery" (Playfair).

Full title: “The Protestant resolution of faith: being an answer to three questions: I. How far we must depend on the authority of the church for the true sense of Scripture? II. Whether a visible succession from Christ to this day makes a church, which has this succession an infallible interpreter of Scripture, and whether no church, which has not this succession, can teach the true sense of Scripture? III. Whether the Church of England can make out such a visible succession? . ” ‘The protestant resolution of faith' (1683) , maintained that since the age of the apostles the church has had no infallible guide but the scriptures. William Sherlock (c. 1641 – June 1707) was a Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist. Sherlock was a leader among the brilliant group of London divines including Thomas Tenison, William Clagett, and Simon Patrick who carried on the literary defense of the Church of England against Catholicism from late in the reign of Charles II into that of James II. DESAGULIERS, John Theophilus.
Bierens de Haan 1178-1180; DSB IV, pp. 43-46; STCN (12 copies, incl. 6 incomplete). Second edition in Dutch of a syllabus of lectures by a British natural philosopher, reprinting the first two volumes and adding a third volume that appears here in translation for the first time. The son of Huguenot refugees, Desaguliers (1683-1744) studied at Christ Church, Oxford and succeeded James Keill as lecturer in experimental philosophy at Hart Hall. "Desaguliers' practical abilities aroused the Royal Society's interest soon after his arrival in London ... at Newton's suggestion, he was invited to repeat some of Newton's experiments on heat; before long he had become a de facto curator of experiments" (DSB). Desaguliers was highly skilled in practical mechanics, improving numerous devices, and described and demonstrated a great number of experiments. For the benefit of his audience, Desaguliers published a number of his lectures in 1717 and in 1719 others appeared in an unauthorized edition that Desaguliers denounced. Only in 1734 did the first official volume of lectures appear, including a simple treatment of Newton's system of the world and a description of Ralph Allen's railway in Bath. The second volume appeared in 1746. "Desaguliers attributed the ten-year delay before the appearance of his second tome to his desire to improve the treatment of machines, especially waterwheels ... Continuing with mechanics, in seven lectures, he discussed impact and elasticity, vis viva and momentum, heat, hydrostatics and hydraulics, pneumatics, meteorology, and more machines. Frankfurt, J. Ph. Caprarola: Author, 1683. 1st Edition. Vellum. Very good. 8vo (13.0 x 9.5 cm) . Contemporary stiff vellum; Soiled; manuscript title, “Tractatus de orolog,” in black,; institutional tag, “Mns/ 17th C” at base of spine; Labeling on front cover “Ms 78. Collation: 326 pp. Includes 12 diagrams + 2 folding tables. The diagrams relate to problems raised in text. Gloucestershire Country Library label/stamp is present on front pastedown. The Latin text is written in a fine hand. This manuscript is likely the notes taken by Maria Pettus(sic) who attended a course on sun dials offered by Giles Francois de Gottignes at Carprarola in 1683. This point is indicated by writing at bottom of p. 261 that reads: “Haec audiebat et scribebat … Maria Pettus a Caprarola explicare et [?] … Egidio de Gotignies anno 1683. The manuscript is organized in four “Caput” or chapters which have discussion of topic followed by “Problema” or problems and in later chapters there are “Quaesitum” or end, objective which is then followed by a series of problems. The writer has taken some artistic licence in how text is organized on several pages, such as a horn of plenty design (p.186) and “V’ shap (p.193). Each page of text has a catchword at bottom.
Leclerc: Les origines italiennes de l'architecture théatrale moderne, p. 181) e l'architettura militare. Esempl. puro e marginoso. ''Troili, a pupil of the quadratura painter Michelangelo Colonna, became scene painter for the Farnese theatre at Parma. Ferdinando Bibiena saw his work there (probably after the artist's death) and absorbed its influence. This original edition of Troili's exceptionally handsome book on perspective is one of the real milestones in the history of theatrical scenery: it describes the conscious use of visual deception, the creation of greater 'depth' by means of oblique positioning of the wings, as common practice twenty years before Pozzo'' (Breman in Architectural Th … [Click Below for Full Description]
