Others still are essentially treatises teaching church leaders theology, church history, and heresies within the Catholic Church. Originally, the homilies were published in two books beginning in 1547 concluding in 1571. While the sermons were written and delivered by numerous preachers, the writings in the second portion were mainly written by Bishop John Jewel, whose focus was on teaching on living a model Christian life. This rare 1683 printing of ‘Homilies’ includes the 39-Articles outlining the doctrines and practices of the Church of England. MALLET, Alain Manesson
[Paris] : [Chez Denis Thierry], [1683]. Octavo leaf (209 x 131 mm) from Mallet's Description de l'Univers, the text verso in French with two brief entries titled De la Terre des Papous and De La Carpentarie. The map itself shows the north coast of the island of New Guinea and offshore islands with some accuracy, including the marking and naming of the Riviere St Augustin (Gabina River) and Riviere des Vierges. Although showing a substantial portion of the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline, the mapping indicates no certain knowledge that the northeastern part of Australia is separated from New Guinea.

Bourges, Jacques de & Pallu, Francois
A finely bound copy of the first French accounts of Siam -that of Bourges-, with early relations on China, Vietnam, Tonkin and the East Indies. The Bourges is in its third edition and the Pallu in its second edition (all editions are rare). Father de Bourges (c.1630 - 1714) was a member of the first Catholic mission to Siam, arriving with his two fellow missionaries in 1662 to Ayuthaya. Since Siam was tolerant of other religions it became a safe place for the missionaries to establish themselves, and in 1664 a second group led by Monseigneur Pallu joined the fathers in Siam after a two-year journey overland. Francois Pallu (1626 - 1684) was a French Bishop and missionary in Asia and a founding member of the Paris Foreign Missions Society; he was originally recruited by Alexander de Rhodes and sent to the Far East along with other missionaries -namely La Motte. Both volumes together combine a considerable portion of the French knowledge of the East at the end of the 17th century. Distinguished provenance: Charles de Lorraine (possibly Charles III, Duke de Elbeuf), his signature on the first title page. Cordier Sinica, 827.

M. Antoine Arnauld
Paris: Pierre le Petit, 1683. 7th edition. Full leather. 697p. Full 17th century calf. Five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments. A hardcover book in good condition. Cover worn, hinges cracked, corners bumped, large scratch in front cover leather, otherwise clean and tight. Illustrated title page depicting Christ being dragged away from the Last Supper by Roman soldiers - presumably an allegorical representation of the unworthy soul receiving the Eucharist. Text in French. Scarce work on frequent reception of the Eucharist. The author refers to the teachings of the Church Fathers, Popes, and Church Councils and touches on both the Sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist.

Printed for John Baker at the three Pigeons, 1683. Printed for John Baker at the three Pigeons. Hardcover. B00IYM0UDS 1683 first edition 'Printed for John Baker at the three Pigeons in St. Paul's Church Yard' (London) 4 5/8 x 7 1/4 inches tall hardbound, grey paper boards over beige cloth spine with printed paper label to spine, endpapers refreshed, [8], 359, [1] pp. Covers mildly soiled and edgeworn, with slight bumping to upper tips. Interior is near fine - clean, bright and unmarked. Altogether, an outstanding copy of this important work, in which Samuel Parker attempts to prove that episcopacy - government of the church by bishops - was the practice of the primitive Christian church. References: ESTC No. R30082; Wing (1996), P453. ESTC locates only nine institutional copies in North America. ~LLL~ Samuel Parker (1640-1688) was an English churchman, of strong Erastian views and a fierce opponent of Dissenters. His political position is often compared with that of Thomas Hobbes, but there are also clear differences; he was also called in his time a Latitudinarian, but this is not something on which modern scholars are agreed. During the reign of King James II he served as Bishop of Oxford, and was considered by James to be a moderate in his attitude to Catholics. As the early 1680s witnessed a reaction against religious and political dissent, Parker re-entered the political fray in a series of works, beginning with 'The Case of the Church of England Briefly and Truly Stated' (1681). Parker's ecclesiological position, which has often been misunderstood, was far from being … [Click Below for Full Description]
