And Particularly the Practices of the Court of Rome, To hinder the Reformation of their Errours and to maintain their Greatness. Translated into English, the "Historie of the Councel of Trent" chronicles the great Council that formed the modern Catholic Church. The Council of Trent played an important part in determining the outcome of the Counter-Reformation. Called for by Pope Paul Ill, the Council was finally disbanded in 1563; although it had a life span of 18 years, it was only engaged in talks for four and a half years. The Pope did not attend the meetings of the Council and he took no formal part in it, however his legates had to ensure that the pope’s views would always be put forward in order that there was no danger of the Council being superior to the Pope. The Council was called to examine doctrine and reform. Charles V had wanted abuses looked at first in an attempt to please the Protestants and hopefully tempt them back to the church. Once they were back they could look at doctrine. Paul III did not want this as reforms could financially damage him and concessions could diminish his authority. The result was that two separate sections dealt with reform and doctrine simultaneously. The Council of Trent did mark a turning-point in the history of the Catholic Church as it gave Catholics a certainty about their own beliefs and practices that had been lacking and offered a firm base on which the spiritual life of the Catholic world could be reconstructed. .

A TREATISE Of LITHOTOMY: or, Of the Extraction of the Stone out of the Bladder. Written in French by Mr. Tolet, Lithotomist in the Hospital of the Charity in Paris. Translated into English by A. Lovell.

Printed by H. H. for William Cademan,, London: 1683 - Illustrated with 20 inserted copperplate engravings [as required]. In its day, Tolet's Treatise a well-regarded work on the subject; initially published in 1681, it was soon translated into English and German, with his work still being published in England in 1723, and in Paris as late as 1758. This English version of Tolet's Treatise one of the earliest books in this language on the subject, preceded only by, our research suggests, a 1677 translation of Groenveldt's Lithologia, and Fabricius Hildanus' Lithotomia Vesic¾, published in 1640. Quite rare on the market, especially complete with all 20 plates, with APBC not having any listings, and AE showing the most recent auction of that by Southeby's, in 1981, an imperfect copy lacking 2 plates. Modest wear & rubs to binding. Plates quite sharp, though text with some occasional light staining. Withal, a solid VG - VG+ copy. 19th C brown half-calf binding, with marbled paper boards. 8vo: A^4 B - N^8. F2 mis-signed E2. 6-3/16" x 3-5/8". First Edition in English (Krivatsy 11909; Wing T-1775).         Histoire du Concile de Trente

Amsterdam - G. P. & J. Blaeu, 1683 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A great early edition of this very important work. Very scarce. Leatherbound volume with gilt detailing to the spine, andmarble paper pastedowns. Paolo Sarpi (August 14, 1552 January 15, 1623) was an Italian patriot, scholar, scientist and church reformer. His most important roles were as a canon lawyer and historian active on behalf of the Venetian Republic. In 1619 his chief literary work Istoria del Concilio Tridentino (History of the Council of Trent), was printed at London. It appeared under the name of Pietro Soave Polano, an anagram of Paolo Sarpi Veneto (plus o). The editor, Marco Antonio de Dominis, did some work on polishing the text. He has been accused of falsifying it, but a comparison with a manuscript corrected by Sarpi himself shows that the alterations are unimportant. Translations into other languages followed: there were the English translation by Nathaniel Brent and a Latin edition in 1620, and French and German editions. Its emphasis was on the role of the Papal Curia, and its slant on the Curia hostile. This was unofficial history, rather than a commission, and treated ecclesiastical history as politics. [5] This attitude, bitterly realistic for John Hale, was coupled with a criticism, that the Tridentine settlement was not concilatory but designed for further conflict. This book, together with the later rival and apologetic history by Cardinal Pallavicini, was criticized by Leopold von Ranke (History of the Popes), who examined the use they have respectively made of their manuscript materials. The result was not highly favourable to either: without deliberate falsification, both coloured and suppressed. They write as advocates rather than historians. Ranke rated the literary qualities of Sarpi's work very highly. Sarpi never acknowledged his authorship, and baffled all the efforts of Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Cond to extract the secret from him. Condition: The binding is tight and firm, although the front board is detached and present. There is some wear to the extremities including bumping to the corners, heavy rubbing to the leather with some loss to the corners and edges of the boards, and heavy rubbing to the spine, resulting in wear to the gilt detailing. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark, odd spot, and water staining to the top right and corner of the majority of pages. There is an ink stain affecting the bottom righthand corners of pages 109-206. This does not affect the text. There is a rubber stamp print to the rear blank endpaper. Overall the volume is in good condition. The binding is probably only fair but is a rare survival and original..

Der Churfürstl. Sächs. Handelstadt Leipzigk Kauf- Und Handels-Recht

[Leipzig]; Christolph Günther 1683 - Boards bound with Latin missal with musical notation. 16mo. (4) , 132, 4 pages. Only edition. In German. A compendium of regulations of the City of Leipzig. Of special interest are the edicts concerning Jews: "Leipziger Juden-Ordnung de anno 1682." The relationship between this city in Saxony and the Jews is an anomaly. On the one hand, Jews were banished from Saxony in 1430 - (it took three centuries for them to be readmitted to Leipzig) . On the other hand, on account of the seasonal Leipzig Fair, the number of Jewish merchants present in the City would swell to the point that these visitors were formally authorized to conduct gatherings in their own prayer-rooms ("Judenschulen") . Indeed, permitted to attend the Fair were not only German Jews, but Jews of Eastern Europe as well. In the present text, Johann-Georg III, Duke of Saxony, mandates several laws concerning Jewish tradesmen and the nature of Jewish participation in the Fair. In order to attend, the Jew required attestation to his professional honesty ("ein Ehrlicher Handelsmann") (par. 1) ; he was forbidden to lodge in the suburbs (par. 2) ; and at all times, he must be in possession of his various individual passes (pars. 3-6) . Also, legal-clauses are addressed to the wives, children and servants of the Jewish tradesmen visiting (pars.10-12) . Of peculiar note: Jewish musicians were barred from trading altogether (par. 21) . See JE, Vol. VII, pp. 673-4. Subjects: German Law. Books before 1700. OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide. Backstrip detached. Binding very solid. Paper missal over boards torn in places and foxed. All edges lightly bumped. Pages lightly foxed around text throughout, fresh and clean otherwise. Good condition. (GER-38-46) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Council of Trent did mark a turning-point in the history of the Catholic Church as it gave Catholics a certainty about their own beliefs and practices that had been lacking and offered a firm base on which the spiritual life of the Catholic world could be reconstructed. .

De urinis et pulsibus de missione sanguinis de febribus de morbis capitis, et pectoris. 4to. [20], 606 [i.e., 608]pp. Woodcut ornaments. Bologna: ex typographia HH. Antonij Pisarrii, 1683. 216 x 161 mm. Vellum c. 1683, title hand-inked on spine. Leaf Aaaa2 torn and repaired at an early date without loss of text, otherwise a fine copy. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed at the foot of the title: "All&#39; Illmo Conte Tommaso della Gherardesca. l&#39;Autore." </p><p>First Edition, inscribed by the author. <b>This is the first inscribed copy of a major seventeenth century medical classic that has been on the market in more than a decade. </b> Bellini, professor of anatomy and medical theory at Pisa, was one of the Italian founders of iatromechanics, a system that framed physiologic events such as the circulation of the blood in terms of mathematical and physical principles. Bellini&#39;s De urinis et pulsibus represents the first important attempt by an Italian scientist to systematically apply iatromechanics to medical theory. "William Harvey&#39;s theory of the circulation was of fundamental importance to Bellini and other proponents of iatromechanism. Bellini asserted that good health depended on optimal function of the circulation of the blood, and that disease was a manifestation of an inefficient circulation. Rejecting ancient humoral pathology, he viewed blood as a physical fluid with specific properties that could be interpreted in terms of mathematical and physical principles. . . . Bellini emphasized that disease was often due to alterations in the elasticity or &#39;tone&#39; of the solids, or in the density of the fluids which hindered their motion. This, in turn, could cause local congestion or stagnation. Bellini&#39;s enthusiastic support of therapeutic bleeding reflected this pathophysiologic concept. He tried to prove that this phlebotomy increased the velocity of the circulation, thereby washing away &#39;morbid matter&#39; and restoring health" (Fye, pp. 181-82). </p><p>In the book&#39;s section on diseases of the chest, Bellini reported "several forms of heart disease, especially of the syncopal type . . . in his book De urinis et pulsibus, Bellini discusses the state of the coronary arteries and admits that the condition which he calls &#39;pressio&#39; is dangerous and may cause the contraction of the heart to be abolished (p. 541). He also has in mind external pressure by tumors, fat and so on. However, an intra-arterial coronary impediment of blood-flow by calcification was clearly described by this author. Bellini reported of a patient who died of a condition similar to the clinical picture of coronary disease as we now understand it, in whose coronary arteries he found a &#39;stone.&#39; It seems quite reasonable to deduce that Bellini saw in the post-mortem a coronary occlusion" (Leibowitz, History of Coronary Heart Disease, p. 71). </p><p>Bellini&#39;s work is also important in the history of urology, as it marks the first important contribution to the chemical analysis of urine. Recognizing the value of urine as a diagnostic aid, Bellini insisted on its chemical analysis in pathologic conditions. </p><p>Bellini presented this copy of De urinis et pulsibus to Tommaso della Gherardesca (1654-1721), a distinguished member of an important Tuscan aristocratic family and as such a likely patron. Gherardesca was appointed bishop of Fiesole in 1702 and archbishop of Florence in 1703; he also founded the Seminario Maggiori di Firenze in 1712. The rarity of this inscription by Bellini cannot be overestimated. This is the first inscribed book by Bellini we have seen on the market in more than 40 years and it is also the first inscribed copy of a major seventeenth century classic on any aspect of medicine that we have seen on the market in more than a decade, possibly longer. In addition this copy is clearly in the original binding in which it was presented, and with the exception of one leaf, which was inexplicably torn through and repaired, the copy is in fine, even very fine condition for a work of this period</p>. <p>Garrison-Morton 762.1, 4162.         The Red Bellied Woodpecker

      - A very detailed hand colored engraving by Mark Catesby (1683-1749 from his breathtaking series "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands". This book was published in London 1731-1743 (first edition), 1751-1755 (second edition), 1771-1775 (third edition) c.1800 (fourth edition). Overall this print is 14&#148; x 20&#148; and is from the 1st edition. In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. When Catesby returned to England from his final voyage to America in 1726, he was unable to afford the expense of having his drawings engraved professionally. Undeterred, he taught himself to etch with the assistance of Joseph Goupy, a French artist living in London, and went on to produce all but a few of the plates for his publication. He scrupulously monitored the coloring of the engravings, either painting the impressions himself or closely supervising the work to insure its fidelity to his preparatory studies. The result of Catesby&#146;s tenacious effort was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Widely considered a crowning achievement of 18th-century art and science, Catesby&#146;s Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands has lost none of its power to delight in the 250 years since its publication. This remarkable study of American plants, animals, and marine life provided an important model for later artists, including John James Audubon, who followed in Catesby&#146;s footsteps a century later. The works illustrated here are among the masterpieces of Catesby&#146;s Natural History. The artist&#146;s charming, distinctive style is immediately apparent in these engravings, and Catesby&#146;s enthusiasm for his subjects is palpable. Aside from their esthetic charm, however, Catesby&#146;s illustrations were significant for other reasons. His pioneering attempts to describe and portray birds accurately, life-sized, and in botanical settings set him apart from his contemporaries and foreshadowed the work of Audubon and Alexander Wilson. He was the first to abandon the Indian names for his subjects, trying to establish scientific names based on generic relationships. Indeed, the great Linnaeus, working on his Systema Naturae at this time, used Catesby&#146;s work as the basis of his system of binomial nomenclature for American species. For all these and many other reasons, these are magnificent prints both for their beauty and importance. The quality of the work was so far superior to foregoing accounts that many scholars rank Catesby as the first real naturalist in America. Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing and staining. Also evidence of a past repair to top margin.
