Uncommon map of Transilvania, from "Mercurio Geografico", published in Rome by G. de Rossi. A rich cartouche enriches the map. The Italian cartographer Cantelli introduced a style in cartography that was followed and developed by Coronelli: his maps are very attractive and finely engraved, with elaborate strapworks and decorations.

Dimensioni varie, in folio oblungo, margini esterni 465x365." Pont l'anno 1683. Gardens of Rome with their plants raised and views in perspective drawn and engraved by Giovanni Battista Falda . Oblong folio , title page, frontispiece engraved by Arnold van Westerhout after a drawing by G.B. Manelli and 19 plates, 14 of which are engraved in copper by Giovan Battista Falda and 5 by Simone Felice. Modern half leather binding, gold title to spine. A wonderful example of the second edition of the work, dated 1683, with the plates in the first state of two before the numbering of the sheets. Magnificent impressions, printed on contemporary laid paper, with wide margins, in excellent conditions. . The term "nuovamente dati alle stampe" would indicate the existence of a first edition of the work, which is definitely next to 1677 because it does not appear in the Index of the publisher De Rossi of that year. As Giovan Battista Falda died in Rome in August of 1677, there are no doubt that the work was published posthumously. This second edition dated 1683 is unknown to Bellini, that believes unwrapped dating - proposed by Brunet - 1683 because on that date A. van Westerhout was just sixteen, and then it would have been too young to engrave the wonderful allegoric title page. A magnific set of the roman gardens of Falda. Bartsch 1, 2 e 56 - 70; TIB 056 - 076 I/II; Brunet, volume 2, p. 1171; Bellini 213 - 227; Nagler, vol. 4, p. 447.

Leclerc: Les origines italiennes de l'architecture théatrale moderne, p. 181) e l'architettura militare. Esempl. puro e marginoso. ''Troili, a pupil of the quadratura painter Michelangelo Colonna, became scene painter for the Farnese theatre at Parma. Ferdinando Bibiena saw his work there (probably after the artist's death) and absorbed its influence. This original edition of Troili's exceptionally handsome book on perspective is one of the real milestones in the history of theatrical scenery: it describes the conscious use of visual deception, the creation of greater 'depth' by means of oblique positioning of the wings, as common practice twenty years before Pozzo'' (Breman in Architectural Theory and Practice III - B - 24). Buon esepl.

Norman II, n° 2062. Bowers, Western Medical Pionners in Feudal Japan, p. 32). Krivatsy, n° 9603

        L'Art de jetter les Bombes.

Added engraved title, large engraved vignette on title, engraved headpieces, one engraved plate, & many illus. in the text (some woodcut, some engraved). 4 p.l., 445, [17] pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, cont. polished tree calf, spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: l'Autheur & N. Langlois, 1683. First edition and a lovely copy from the Macclesfield library. During his infantry service, Blondel had been amazed at the crude methods of the French bombardiers. After having scrutinized all the publications on the subject including those of Galileo and Torricelli, Blondel developed a series of practical rules, explained in the present work. These rules were based on three solutions proposed by Buot, Roemer, and La Hire. "Blondel used the three solutions for establishing the practical rules which he formulated in his L'Art de jetter les bombes, the printing of which was delayed until 1683 by order of Louis XIV, who hardly cared to have the enemy profit by it."-D.S.B., II, p. 202. Blondel (1618-86), military engineer and architect, wrote the standard French work on architecture (1675-83) which remained the definitive reference work for French architects for more than a century. Very fine copy from the Macclesfield library with embossed stamp on title and the South Library bookplate. Engraved armorial bookplate of Lt. Gen. G.L. Parker, the fourth Earl of Macclesfield. .

Translated into English, with Notes thereupon, and some Additions out of French for Sea-Gunners. By Sir Jonas Moore, Kt. With an Appendix of Artificial Fire-works for War and Delight; by Sir Abraham Dager Kt. Ingenier.

Woodcut frontis., seven folding woodcut plates, & one folding printed table (detached). 6 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 124 pp. 8vo, fine 18th-cent. mottled calf, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed by A.G. and J.P. for Obadiah Blagrave, 1683. Second edition in English, enlarged (1st ed. in English: 1673) of Moretti's Trattato dell'Artigliera (Venice: 1665). The makeup of our edition is complicated -- just look at the bibliographical head scratching which takes place in the ESTC entry -- and there is tremendous variation in copies. Our copy lacks the two preliminary leaves with dedication to George Wharton and two final advertisement leaves (none of the three Macclesfield copies had the leaves of ads and each had a different collation). This text was translated by the son of Jonas Moore (1617-79), mathematician and patron of astronomy, who supported John Flamsteed and helped finance the foundation, construction, and equipping of the observatory at Greenwich. Jonas Moore Jr. has made a number of additions and Abraham Dager's appendix appears here for the first time. Dager sought to apply principles used in firework displays to defensive warfare. Fine copy from the Macclesfield library with the South Library bookplate and embossed stamp. ❧ Philip, A Bibliography of Firework Books, p. 99. .

Emblemata amatoria. Emblemes d'amour en quatre langue.London, "Chez l'Amoureux", [ca. 1690]. 8vo. With engraved title-page, 45 engraved emblems by Jan van Vianen and 46 engraved leaves with a poem facing the emblems and title-page. Contemporary calf with gold-tooled spine and sides.

Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43. First edition published in the Netherlands of a wholly engraved love emblem book. It contains 45 engraved emblems, with the epigrams in four languages (Latin, Italian, French and Dutch) on the opposite page. Between 1683 and 1714 at least five editions were published at London with the emblems engraved by Philip Ayres, based on the love emblems of Heinsius, Crispyn de Passe's Thronus Cupidinis, and the Amorum Emblemata by Otto Vaenius. The plates of the present edition however, were newly engraved by the Dutch artist Jan van Vianen (ca. 1660-1726), who went to England in his youth. According to Praz, Ayres worked directly from the originals, so his plates were in reverse, while Jan van Vianen probably worked from the Ayres-plates, getting them "right" again. However, Vianen adapted them freely and showed better workmanship and a good sense of perspective which was entirely lacking in Ayres's plates. With bookplates. Only slightly browned with a few small spots and a small tear in the first two leaves. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall a very good copy.

COLLECTION OF THIRTEEN ENGLISH PUBLICATIONS RELATING TO THE POPISH PLOT].

London. 1672-1683. - Thirteen separate imprints. Small folio or folio. Dbd. Some contemporary ownership inscriptions. A collection of contemporary London imprints regarding the Popish Plot, a fabricated conspiracy that claimed to discover a Catholic plot to assassinate King Charles II in 1678. The hoax was concocted by Titus Oates, an Anglican priest who grew to despise the Jesuit order, whom Oates accused were responsible for carrying out the assassination. The furor over the Popish Plot gripped London between 1678 and 1681, resulted in the execution of over twenty people, and increased long-lasting and deep divisions between Protestants and Catholics in England. The first work in the list below, Charles II's HIS MAJESTIES DECLARATION TO ALL HIS LOVING SUBJECTS (1672) provides interesting background on the King's views on religious tolerance and public worship. Most apropos to the Popish Plot is the King's refusal to provide places of public worship to the "Recusants of the Roman Catholick Religion." He only ensures Catholics "the common Exemption from the execution of the Penal Laws, and the Exercise of their Worship in their private Houses onely [sic]." Such anti-Catholic sentiment certainly contributed to the environment that allowed for the success of a phenomena like the Popish Plot. The authors of the remaining works include figures directly involved with the Plot, such as Titus Oates, John Smith, Lawrence Mowbray, and Stephen Dugdale, along with another title issued by King Charles II and a rare defense of the King's work written by John Dryden, the dominant literary figure of Restoration England. Both of these latter works touch on the religious state of the country and the Plot itself. The imprints included here are as follows: 1) [Charles II]. HIS MAJESTIES DECLARATION TO ALL HIS LOVING SUBJECTS, MARCH 15th 1671/2. [London]: John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1672. 8pp. WING C2990. ESTC R171214. 2) SIMEON AND LEVI, BRETHREN IN INIQUITY.
