[SPINOZA, Benedictus de] B. d. S.
[Amsterdam: Jan Rieuwertsz], 1677. First edition, and a very fine copy, of Spinoza's Opera Posthuma which "have served, then and since, with the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, to immortalize his name" (PMM 153). The first work in the volume is "Spinoza's one indisputable masterpiece, the Ethics" (Bennett, A Study of Spinoza's Ethics, p. 7). The first and "principal work in the Opera Posthuma is Spinoza's Ethics, in which Spinoza bridged the Cartesian duality of body and spirit by maintaining that the universe, including God, constitutes a unified infinite and all-inclusive 'Substance,’ of which corporeality and spirituality were merely attributes - a unity expressed in the controversial phrase 'Deus sive Natura' (God or Nature). Ethics is thus considered the first systematic exposition of pantheism, the philosophy in which God is identified with the entire universe" (Norman 1988). "Baruch (or Benedictus) Spinoza is one of the most important philosophers - and certainly the most radical - of the early modern period. His thought combines a commitment to Cartesian metaphysical and epistemological principles with elements from ancient Stoicism and medieval Jewish rationalism into a nonetheless highly original system. His extremely naturalistic views on God, the world, the human being and knowledge serve to ground a moral philosophy centered on the control of the passions leading to virtue and happiness. They also lay the foundations for a strongly democratic political thought and a deep critique of the pretensions of Scripture and sectarian religion. Of all the philosophers … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAIMONDO, Annibale.
Anversa [Antwerp]: [n.p.], , 1677.. 8vo, 210pp, tables and copper engr. charts (?) throughout. Original wrappers, manuscript title at spine, soiled, lacking one leather tie, mild embrowning at edges, otherwise a very good, wide-margined and uncut copy. ¦ Later edition, first published at Venice in 1549. Annibale Raimondo of Verona (b. 1505 or 1506) wrote on comets, the new star of 1572, the tides, as well as composing astrological predictions in Italian annually from at least 1553 through 1565. The present work presents a system of Òdivination by names, the letters of which are given numerical valuesÓ and by planets and signs of the zodiac Òwhich are again assigned numbers and related to letters of the alphabetÓ (Thorndike VI, p.473). Curiously, RaimondoÕs Opera has the same title as a work ascribed to Gaudentius of Treviso which was placed on the Index in 1559, but survives in a manuscript copy. Gardner 1056, citing eds. 1550 and 1551. Not in Bibliotheca Esoterica or Caillet.
