The extensive annotations reflect not only on Descartes supposition on Epicurus „what colour of evidence have we of the various Configurations of his Atomes", but also the chapter in which Hale is „Touching the Excellency of the Humane Nature in general" is commented insections in which the sense of Vegetables is elaborated on as is on the senses: Touching, Smelling, Tasting, Hearing, Seeing.
Jan Rieuwertsz], [Amsterdam, 1677. First edition, and a very fine copy, of Spinoza?s Opera Posthuma which ?have served, then and since, with the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, to immortalize his name? (PMM 153). The first work in the volume is ?Spinoza?s one indisputable masterpiece, the Ethics? (Bennett, A Study of Spinoza?s Ethics, p. 7).The first and ?principal work in the Opera Posthuma is Spinoza?s Ethics, in which Spinoza bridged the Cartesian duality of body and spirit by maintaining that the universe, including God, constitutes a unified infinite and all-inclusive ?Substance,? of which corporeality and spirituality were merely attributes ? a unity expressed in the controversial phrase ?Deus sive Natura? (God or Nature). Ethics is thus considered the first systematic exposition of pantheism, the philosophy in which God is identified with the entire universe? (Norman 1988).?Baruch (or Benedictus) Spinoza is one of the most important philosophers - and certainly the most radical - of the early modern period. His thought combines a commitment to Cartesian metaphysical and epistemological principles with elements from ancient Stoicism and medieval Jewish rationalism into a nonetheless highly original system. His extremely naturalistic views on God, the world, the human being and knowledge serve to ground a moral philosophy centered on the control of the passions leading to virtue and happiness. They also lay the foundations for a stronglydemocratic political thought and a deep critique of the pretensions of Scripture and sectarian religion. Of all the philosophers of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Etienne Michallet, 1677.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Descartes, Rene; Louis de la Forge
Paris: Michel Bobin & Nicolas le Gras, 1677. Second edition. Hardcover. Very Good. "Seconde Edition, 1677. Full leather, raised bands, gilt title and decorations at spine, clean unmarked text, illustrated, 511 pp. + "Table", Very Good copy, old bookplate on front pastedown, small ink notation on the verso of the flyleaf, some foxing and soiling to the text, some wear to the covers with loss to the tips and edges, some cracking to the leather at the spine, some soil/discoloration to the covers too. Text in French. A rare book. Our copy housed in protective glassine. Descartes considered the human body a material machine, directed by a rational soul located in the pineal body. SPINOZA, B. DE).
(Amsterdam, J. Rieuwertsz), 1677. With some illustrations and diagrams in the text, woodcut vignette on title. (40), 614, (32, index), (2), 112, (8) pp. 4to. Contemporary vellum, blind-stamped ornament in center of both sides, upper joint and endpapers expertly repaired, spine somewhat darkened. PMM 153; Van der Linde 22; Kingma-Offenberg 24; Wolf Collection, 378; Knuttel 377. First edition of Spinoza's posthumous works, including the first edition of the world-famous Ethica, which "have served, then and since, with the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, to immortalize his name" (PMM 153). These posthumous works were published by Jan Rieuwertsz, an Amsterdam bookseller and friend of Spinoza, and edited by him together with the merchant Jarig Jelles, who probably wrote the preface. It contains the first publication of the Ethics. The remainder comprises the Tractatus Politicus- his last, unfinished production, which develops a theory of law and government akin to that of Hobbes; the Tractatus de Intellectus Emendatione, also unfinished; a selection of letters- restricted, owing to the dangers of publishing correspondence on questions of politics and theology; and, after an index, a Compendium Grammatices Linguae Hebraeae, paginated separately.Only one day before his death Spinoza arranged that his posthumous works should be sent to Jan Rieuwertsz in Amsterdam, who also published his Principia of Descartes and the Tractatus-theologico-politicus. In the book neither author, nor place nor editor are mentioned. This was no superfluous precaution, for in 1678, hardly one year after … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Russian Embassy] [Coyett, Balthasar] [Klenk, Conrad van].
Very rare first edition of the published account of Conraad van Klenk's 1675 embassy to Russia Conraad van Klenk (1628-1691) was the son of a prosperous Dutch merchant who competed with others such as Isaac Massa in a thriving trade in salted fish and other commodities from Russia. He worked in partnership with the brothers De Vogelaar and had houses in Archangel, Moscow and on the Volga. Good relations with Russia for the purposes of trade, and as a bulwark against the ever-present threat of Sweden, were vital to the emerging Dutch Republic during this period of religious tension and conflict in the Netherlands. Van Klenck's father numbered among the merchants who supported Russia militarily against the Catholic Poles in 1631, supplying money for arms and soldiers. Conscious of the influence of businessmen like Van Klenk, as well as of his Russian expertise, William of Orange promoted Conraad, tasking him with the Amsterdam carnival preparations in 1672 and putting him in charge of shipping in 1674. The following year, he posted Conraad, by then a deputy to the States General, as an extraordinary ambassador to the Russian court under Tsar Alexei I. After three years of conflict, the newly founded Republic had gained independence but was weakened by the effort and William III's ally, Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, had suffered a recent defeat by the Swedes and was in no position to lend support. The embassy set sail at the end of July and travelled from Archangel, along the river Volga to Moscow, and carrying fifty-three men, as well as three carriages an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Full diced calf binding with 5 raised bands to the spine, elaborate gilt floriation in the compartments, red morocco label intact, spine has white library lettering and a library sticker in the top compartment. Board leather is scuff and worn, boards showing at corners, top of spine worn. Interior has normal institutional library markings, hand drawn coat of arms on first free endpaper with owner name, first 10 leaves of opening have worming at bottom margin, freckled with foxing throughout but otherwise clean and unmarked. Very scarce in commerce, we could find no records of any copies for sale in the last 75 years. The Paenitentiale Theodori (also known as the Iudicia Theodori or Canones Theodori) is an early medieval penitential handbook based on the judgements of Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury. It exists in multiple versions. It is generally accepted by scholars today that Theodore himself is not responsible for any of the penitential works ascribed to him. Rather, a certain associate of Theodore's named Eoda is generally regarded as the point of dissemination of certain judgements proffered by Theodore in an unofficial context and in response to questions put to him by students at his Canterbury school regarding proper ecclesiastical organization and discipline. It appears that the Capitula Dacheriana was assembled perhaps as early as a decade after … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan Rieuwertsz, 1677. AN EXCEPTIONALLY WELL-MARGINED COPY (238X188mm) IN A NICE ORIGINAL BINDING WITH A PRESTIGIOUS PROVENANCE - FIRST EDITION. Large 4to, pp. (xli) 614 (xxxiv) 112 (viii), *-5*4 (t-p + 18 leaves = Præfatio + divisional title to Ethica), A-Z4 2A-2K4 (Ethica); (Politica and De emandatione intellectus); 3D-3Z4 4A-4M4 (Epistolae et ad eas responsiones, index, divisional title and preface to Compendium), A-P4 (Compendium grammatices linguae Hebraeae, table of contents index, errata). Roman, Italic and Hebrew type. Woodcut title vignette with author's initial B.d.S. (Benedict de Spinoza), initials, diagrams. Light age-yellowing, soiling to final two leaves, bound in early gilt-ruled spotted calf, sympathetically rebacked. Bookplate neatly removed. Signed on t-p as of “Lord Aberdour”, perhaps James Douglas (1702-68), 14th Earl of Morton, astronomer, President of the Royal Society, and generous patron of James Cook’s voyage to Australia on HMS Endeavour; and ink shlefmark, probably his, on front pastedown. Early marginalia. An excellent copy made even more precious by a learned aristocratic provenance. Edited by his dear friend Jarig Jellis, this collection of Spinoza’s works was published in the year of his death. Jellis’s preface, originally written in Dutch, was translated into Latin by Lodewijk Meyer. Spinoza had wished to publish his Ethics earlier but the scandal over his alleged atheism forced him to procrastinate this enterprise. The book was issued without place and publisher’s name for fear of prosecution. This is the first appearance of Spinoza’s Ethics, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jähns, pp. 1373-1374; Sloos, Warfare 08062; VD17, 23:313315R (4 copies, 3 lacking the plates); WorldCat (14 copies, many incomplete). Rare second edition, complete with all the preliminaries and engravings, of a detailed practical handbook of fortification design. This second edition, revised and improved by the author, emphasizes the new advances in fortification introduced in the Netherlands. The first edition, published in 1677, was in itself a reworking of Christoph Nottnagel's popular Manuale Fortificatorium from 1659. Like its predecessors, Der aufs Neu-verschantzte Turenne was published in "pocket" size, although "coat pockets were large at that time" (Jähns). In his introduction, Behr gives his reasons for naming his treatise after the French marshal Turenne and not after some German prince or general. The title should be understood to be anti-French, and implies that although the French were renowned for their military science, there was so much engineering talent to be found in the German states that Turenne would lock himself in a fortress in fear (*2v).Binding damaged at the extremities with the hinges cracked, back cover with restored fold and ca. 3 cm of the backstrip missing. Text browned and with some spots and wormholes at the lower outer corner of pp. 385-422; a fair copy.
