RALEIGH, Sir Walter
"The designs and style of Raleigh's 'History of the World' places the book among the noblest of literary enterprises" - DNB Sir Walter Raleigh, a 16th-century English explorer and writer, is most known for his South American voyage in hopes of discovering the 'City of Gold'. While imprisoned for treason, he composed his famous book 'History of the World' - a historical view of the world with a heavy emphasis on geography. Even though the work was written as a history book, Raleigh intended to provide advice to King James I of England on how to handle his reign and his feelings toward princes. This 1677 early edition includes a life of the author, which is attributed to John Shirley (Brushfield). Brushfield continues on this work: "After its publication in 1614, the king endeavored to suppress it. This was not carried into effect, as the work was published [and] three separate issues of it appeared the same year. But [the first] and the second edition of 1617 were destitute of [printed] title-pages; and as these alone contained the name of the author, the work was virtually anonymous" This work covers five distinct sections, each of which is charmingly illustrated with city views, maps, and plans by William Hole: · Creation of the world through life of Abraham · Abraham through the destruction of Solomon's Temple · Fall of Jerusalem to Philip of Macedonia · Reign of Philip to rise of Antigonus · Rule of Alexander the Great through Roman conquests. BACON, Francis
1677. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon A rare collection of five important works of Francis Bacon bound together as one! Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. This book 'Sylva Sylvarum' with 'Novus Atlas' is a famous set of philosophical treatises covering topics such as medical treatments for prolonged life and preservation of youth by using opium! Bacon wrote this book as a collection of miscellaneous topics - others include ancient wisdom and secrets. Other works in this volume include 'Articles of Enquiry' and 'Natural History' which helped lay the foundation for many philosophical methodologies that would be important through the 18th- and 19th-centuries. ORIGEN;
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Origen was a 3rd-century Greek scholar and early Christian theologian. He was a prolific writer known for his biblical exegeses, philosophy, and sermons, and was one of the most influential figures in early Christian asceticism. (Finn, 100). Origen's final treatise, 'Philokalia : Contra Celsum' or 'Against Celsus,' was a response to a literary attack on Christianity by an unknown pagan philosopher named Celsus. Saint Ambrose requested Origen write this book, a book that referenced Greek philosophers, poetry, and the Bible as a rational basis for holding steadfast to the Christian faith. (Heine, 127). Origen's response is considered to be the ultimate apology of Christianity. 'Philokalia' is a collection of the original experts from Origen's work. This 1677 edition was produced by Cambridge fellow William Spencer. Spencer made vast and significant improvements to the Latin translation originally made by Czech writer Sigismund Gelenius in 1557. Subsequent editions would continue to use the William Spencer translation and notes, even though not all editions are nearly as desirable or accurate. [Attributes: First Edition]

BOUHOURS, Dominique
1677. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A history of the Knights Hospitaller, The Siege of Rhodes, and Ottoman Sultans! Many Dominique Bouhours works went through several edits and criticized editions. While a large number of the works are well respected, others are considered to be less than authoritative. This work, 'The History of Pierre d'Aubusson,' is one of those works. This book loosely follows the story of his youth. However, what the work does provide is an adequate portrayal of the Knights Hospitaller and the 15th-century Ottoman Empire. The majority of the work, however, focuses on the Siege of Rhodes in 1480, where the Ottoman invasion of Rhodes was thwarted by d'Aubusson, Grand Master and portions of the French army. In 1480, d'Aubusson was awarded the title 'Defender of Christendom' for his defeat of Mahomet II's army. This work is a rare work on the history of Turkey, Ottoman viziers and sultans, Rhodes, and the religious battles between Islamic states and Jesuit/Catholic Europe. Illustrations by Gantrel and Cassin include: · City plan of Rhodes. [Attributes: First Edition]

He states that for charms to work was a case of suggestion and belief. He said for frogs to get into the stomach was a case of eating an apple with frog eggs. First edition of this title, first published the year before as "Memorial Apologetico (Madrid, 1676); important Jesuit refutation of Fernandez de Navarrete more widely known chronicle Tratados Historicos... de China(1676), a significant literary contribution to our knowledge of missions in South East Asia, mostly China; this scarcer book is a Jesuit defense, which vehemently defends from Church and Civil authorities the methods employed by the Jesuits in their missionary endeavors in China, Asia, and with references to Mexico. Rare, no copy of this edition, except this copy, has appeared for sale in 50 years. Hill 379; Palau 63422; Streit-Dindinger V, 2446.

Firm and precious Psalm and Song book in German language, printed at Amsterdam for the Lutheran congregrations in the Netherlands. The silverwork is decorated with a floral design, the central ornament on the front and back cover features a filigree-design of a flower within a heart-shaped shield. Richly gauffered text block with a design of vines surrounding a bird on the long side of the text block. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. ROSSINI, Pietro e Lodovico (CHIRURGIA - MEDICINA)
Venezia, G. B. Brigna, 1677. In 8vo (cm. 15); pergamena rigida coeva; pp. (48), 368.
