DESCARTES RENE'.
Daniel Elzevir 1677 In 8° (196x143); carte numerate 37, pagg. 239. PLOT, Robert.
Oxford: Printed in the [Sheldonian] Theater. FIRST EDITION, and a copy in an exceptional binding, of Plot's extensive survey of the natural history of Oxfordshire in the true Baconian tradition, treating of its flora, fauna, geology, palaeontology and curiosities in general, with the stress on the unusual and anomalous. In this work Plot investigates the geology at length, including erosion and in particular an extensive study of the fossils, but without appreciating that they could be used to identify strata, although he did have some notion of stratigraphy. "Some seventy species of fossils are described and figured by Robert Plot in his work on Oxfordshire, 1677. Here we have excellent descriptions and beautifully engraved drawings of these objects from the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Among them are many well-known forms (given proper names by later authorities), such as the echinoid Clypeus plotii. He recognised the essential differences between those unrelated groups of bivalved shells, the braciopods and the lamellibranchs" (Challinor). On the strength of this book Plot was elected fellow of the Royal Society; a few years later he was appointed its secretary, then he was made the first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and at the same time professor of chemistry. Loosely inserted in this copy are four pages of notes on the book, probably in the hand of James Sotheby, whose signature is on the title-page. This copy was among the heirlooms of the Sotheby family removed from Ecton Hall, Northants, and sold at Sotheby's on 21/22 November 1955, lot 371. Tipped in is … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sumptuously bound in 19th century blue morocco by Pawson and Nicholson, with elaborately gilt boards and spine, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Bookplates on front pastedown, early ownership signature and notes (see below). Small chips in edges of titlepage. Trimmed close, occasionally touching a page number, running title, or catchword. Occasional staining. One leaf supplied from the London, 1677 edition (see below), map supplied in facsimile. Withal, still a very good copy. The very rare first edition, printed in Boston, of William Hubbard's crucially important history of the Indian wars of New England, a cornerstone Americanum. A London edition followed, published in the same year. Hubbard was born in England and came to the colonies in 1635, eventually becoming pastor of the church in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was closely involved in the government of the colony during King Philip's War and this work, along with those of Increase and Cotton Mather, is the best and fullest account of the events of the struggle in Massachusetts. Hubbard and Increase Mather differed with each other on a number of points, and this book seems to have ignited the envy of the latter. "[Hubbard] was distinguished, in an age and country of bigots, for his liberality, moderation, and piety, and his narrative has always been regarded as authoritative by historians" - Church. SCHNEIDEWINI, Johannis [Johann Schneidewein]
Strasburg and Frankfurt: Georgii Andreae Dolhopffii, 1677. Strasburg and Frankfurt: Georgii Andreae Dolhopffii. 1677. hb. Thick 4to, . Johann Schneidewein (1519-1568) was a German jurist. At the age of eleven, he entered the University of Wittenberg and became acquainted with Martin Luther, when he was a boarder at his house in 1544. At first, Scheidewein studied what we would now describe as the "liberal arts". He then turned his attention to the study of law and was granted the degree of licentiate in 1545 (some accounts say 1544). For the next four years he taught and, in 1551, was granted a professorhip in law at the university. In the years prior to his death, he was often consulted on legal matters of state, and several times took part in deputations to the imperial court at Speyer. He died in Wittenberg in 1568, and his tomb at the Castle Church in that city is close to Luther's. His main work was his Commentaries on Justinian, which were edited by Matthias Wesenbeck and first published in 1573. Our copy is a ninth edition and is bound in vellum with yapped edges and a leather spine in compartments, and bears the copperplate engraved frontispiece of Schneidewein. Pagination: [blank], [frontis.], [3], [Appendix, 8], 1-1904 (double-columned; two page numbers to a page). Index [94]. The vellum shows wear and some soiling.
