Striedbeck. del. et sculp: Argent. Francis Glisson (1597-1677) "introduced the idea of irritability as a specific property of all human tissue, a hypothesis which had no effect upon contemporary physiology, but which was later demonstrated experimentally by Haller". Garrison & Morton "Stimulated by ideas of his friend George Ent, Glisson elaborated a theory which he revised in his last medical work, the Tractatus de ventriculo et intestinis (1677). The theory presented itself as follows: The nerves carry a nutritive juice (succus nutrivus) secreted by the brain between cortex and medulla from particles of the arterial blood. The psychic spirits are the "fixed spirits" of this juice, which serves nutrition rather than the function of body fibers. As a chemical substance, the psychic spirits cannot flow fast enough to assure simultaneity of events in the brain and the peripheral parts. Nerve action is transmitted by a vibration of the nerves (caused by localized contraction of the brain), and the muscle fibers then contract because of irritability, a property which they share with all fibers of the body". In reaction to an overland Dutch attempt to capture Dunkirk earlier in the year, Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain, governing the Southern Netherlands for Philip IV of Spain, ordered a Spanish army transported on a fleet of barges to attempt to occupy the islands of Goeree and Overflakee by surprise. Hubbard, William
Boston, 1677. Small quarto. Sumptuously bound in 19th-century blue morocco by Pawson and Nicholson, with elaborately gilt boards and spine, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Bookplates on front pastedown, early ownership signature and notes (see below). Small chips at edges of titlepage. Trimmed close, occasionally touching a page number, running title, or catchword. Occasional staining. One leaf supplied from the London 1677 edition (see below). Map supplied in facsimile. Withal, still a very good copy. The very rare first edition, printed in Boston, of William Hubbard's crucially important history of the Indian wars of New England, a cornerstone Americanum. A London edition followed, published in the same year. Hubbard was born in England and came to the colonies in 1635, eventually becoming pastor of the church in Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was closely involved in the government of the colony during King Philip's War, and this work, along with those of Increase and Cotton Mather, is the best and fullest account of the events of the struggle in Massachusetts. Hubbard and Increase Mather differed with each other on a number of points, and this book seems to have ignited the envy of the latter. "[Hubbard] was distinguished, in an age and country of bigots, for his liberality, moderation, and piety, and his narrative has always been regarded as authoritative by historians" - Church. This copy is without the incredibly rare map of New England by John Foster, the first map printed in English America, supplied here in facsimile. Of the fifty copies of the Boston printing of the book … [Click Below for Full Description]

VOSSIUS, Isaac
London: printed by H.C. for Henry Brome, 1677. Small intrinsic paper flaw to fore-edge of the title-page; very good in contemporary sprinkled calf (joints rubbed, some wear to extremities).. Small octavo, [xvi], 192 pp. (including final advertisement leaf), two folding woodcut plates, full contemporary calf binding. First English edition: an important theoretical work on tides and ocean currents, here published as a small octavo for ready use by mariners and pilots during the golden age of English mercantile seafaring. The author, Isaac Vossius, was for some time a companion of Réne Descartes in the court of Queen Christina of Sweden, and enjoyed a reputation as a master scholar of both science and the humanities. Although this book is in many respects a theoretical treatise on natural phenomena, it contains good (and sometimes speculative) geographical discussion of the East Indies, Americas and the antipodes.Vossius first published this work in Latin in 1633 (titled De motu marium et ventorum liber) and this English translation was by Archibald Lovel. The English edition is designed for use as a seaman's handbook, and is particularly interesting for the hypotheses on sailing the remote oceans: given the date, there is a good deal on Magellan and the Americas, but it is also possible to glimpse the burgeoning interest in the Pacific and the Great South Land in the era before Dampier. He does make reference, for example, to the 'Countreys of the Southern Hemisphere' and to 'the Antipodes', in delineating his argument about ocean currents. At another point he makes reference … [Click Below for Full Description]

HEYLYN, Peter
London: Printed by A.C. for P. Chetwind, and A. Seile.., 1677. Folio, printed title in red and black, with an additional engraved title and four folding maps (maps cut close at some edges due to their large size compared with the text block); contemporary dark sprinkled calf. "A new and strange Adventure, which no Knight Errant ever undertook before" Fifth edition, complete with the important appendix. Heylyn, the seventeenth-century theologian and historian, is said to have written his Cosmography after a stranger had advised him that 'Geography is better than divinity'. First published in 1652 under this title (see catalogue number 30 for the earlier work, Microcosmos, that led to it), it is a huge, wide-ranging description of the known world illustrated with four good engraved maps (Europe, Africa, Asia and North America, the last showing California as an island). The appendix, running to six pages, has its own title-page ("An Appendix to the Former Work, Endeavouring a Discovery of the unknown Parts of the World: especially of Terra Australis Incognita, or the Southern Continent"). This supplementary chapter, which discusses real and imaginary Australian voyages, did not appear in the earliest editions, and is not present in all copies of the later editions (it is for example not present in the copy described by Mendelssohn) and is a bizarre and surprisingly unnoticed text on the southern continent. Heylyn begins: 'And here we are upon a new and strange Adventure, which no Knight Errant ever undertook before...'.He continues by discussing "Terra Australis Incognita", whi … [Click Below for Full Description]
