PEYER, Johann Conrad
Schaffhausen: Onophrius a Waldkirch, 1677. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (150x94 mm), [28], 136, [6] pp. Separate half-title for the second text, 3 folding engraved plates, 3 leaves of plate explanations (possible cut and separated from one leaf) bound next to plates within text, title-page somewhat creased and with small tear to top margin not affecting text. Only little browned, otherwise clean and unmarked. Without cover (paper strip to spine). Good copy of an exceedingly rare work. ---- ADB XXV, 568; Garrison-Morton 1100; Waller 7359; Hirsch-Hubotter IV, 550 - FIRST EDITION. During the period when Peyer and his associates were conducting their research in Schaffhausen, the chemical processes governing digestion were unknown. In the present book, Peyer described what has come to be called "Peyer's patches," the lymphoid follicles in the small intestine that play a role in typhoid fever. Extremely rare: 9 copies located in OCLC. One copy with the same number of plates sold at Sotheby's in 2001 (Friedman Medical Library sale) for $13,200. Very Good.

SCHOTT Gaspar (1608-1660)
BAMBERG, JOH. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Adelung II, pp. 359-360; Landwehr, De Hooghe Book Illustrator 46; Muller, Bibl. Neerlando-Russe 200; Tiele, Bibl. 602; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1677.04. First edition of a valuable account detailing a Dutch embassy to Russia (1675-1676). The objective was to gain Russian participation in the anti-Swedish and anti-French alliance, and Koenraad Klenk, with his expert knowledge of Russian language and culture, was the ideal choice to lead the embassy. The mission was subsidized with more than 50,000 guilders, an extraordinary amount which was even exceeded during the journey. Although the embassy was well received and the Russians were showered with gifts, Klenk failed to persuade the Tsar to enter into war with Sweden. The six impressively evocative plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are typical examples of his rich allegorical imagery. Final leaves restored, with the missing text supplied in manuscrip, some soling, binding worn. An excellent source for the history of Russia and its foreign relations during the reign of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich.

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Amsterdam:] [Jan Rieuwertsz,], 1677. Quarto (198 × 155 mm). Contemporary vellum over boards, with overlapping edges, spine hand lettered and dated in ink, sprinkled edges. Ownership inscription of Wolfgang Krämer dated 1916, with his ownership stamp and exlibris to free endpaper. Initials to each part supplied in red. Spine label sometime removed. A crisp, clean copy. First edition of Spinoza's Opera posthuma, including all his major philosophical writings, with the exception of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. "The Opera posthuma... include his Treatise on the Correction of the Understanding which was written during his residence near Leyden, the Ethics demonstrated according to the Geometrical Order, which is his most important work, and the Political Treatise... The most conspicuous idea of Spinoza's philosophy is that there is only one substance, the infinite divine substance which is identified with Nature; Deus sive Natura, God or Nature. And a striking feature of this philosophy as it is presented in the Ethics is the geometrical form of its presentation. This work is divided into five parts in which the following subjects are treated in turn: God, the nature and origin of the mind, the origin and nature of the emotions, the power of the intellect or human freedom" (Copleston, A History of Philosophy IV, p. 206). Like most copies of the Opera, this copy does not have the portrait, which was only issued after publication.

MAYERNE, Théodore Turquet de
London, N. Ponder, 1677. - 8 leaves, 136 pp, 4 leaves [contents]. Recent full leather. Text browned. Very Good. First Edition in English. Wing M1428. Munk I: 163-68. "The only work that Sir Theodore Mayerne published, was the Apology . . . 'Apologia, in qua videre est, inviolatis Hippocratis et Galeni legibus, Remedia Chymice preparata, tuto usurpari posse Rupel. 1603.' He left his library, containing many MSS., to the College of Physicians. Some of these were published by Dr. Thomas Shirley, and others by Sir Theodore de Vaux, Mayerne's godson, and an honorary Fellow of the College" (Munk I: 168). "Mayerne's reputation as a physician, in his own time, was immense throughout Europe, but he was not, like his colleague Harvey, an original thinker. He and Harvey had indeed little in common, Harvey being as dismissive of chemistry as Mayerne was of the doctors of Padua. He was essentially an eclectic, who sought to incorporate Paracelsian and Hermetic ideas in a basically Galenic system. He was far more tolerant of the Galenist doctors of Paris than they of him, and sent his second son, James, to Paris to learn 'the solid foundations of medicine' from the men who had previously vituperated him. His proclaimed masters were, among the ancients, Hippocrates and Hermes Trismegistus; among the moderns, Fernel and du Chesne. His great contribution lay in his therapeutic practice, his careful and continuous observation of his patients, and his flexible response to their condition. This is recorded in his 'Ephemerides', a regular record, which shows him as an open-minded, rational, obj … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: J. Grover, for R. Royston, 1677. Burnet, Gilbert. (1643-1715) The Memoirs of the Lives and Actions of James and William Dukes of Hamilton and Castleherald, & c. In which an Account is given of the Rise and Progress of the Civil Wars of Scotland with other Great Transactions both in England and Germany, from the Year 1625, to the Year 1652. Together with many Letters, Instructions, and other Papers, Written by King Charles the I. Never before published, all drawn out of, or Copied from the Originals. London, Printed by J. Grover, for R. Royston, Bookseller to the Kings Most Excellent Majesty, 1677. Folio, 12 x 7.5 in. First edition. []3, a6, B-Zz, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Lll4. Contains both portraits where other volumes are lacking. "[Burnet's] vacations were spent chiefly in Hamilton, where the duchess engaged him in putting in order all the papers relating to her father's and uncle's political careers. Lauderdale, who had his own reasons for anxiety as to the light which might be cast upon transactions in which he had himself been engaged, no sooner heard of this than he sent for Burnet to come to court that he might give him all the informa¬tion in his power. The 'Memoirs of the Dukes of Hamilton', Burnet's first historical work, was published in 1676, [actually 1677]. His investigations led in a curious way to a reconciliation between Hamilton and the court. Among the papers which he ex¬amined were found undoubted claims of the family upon the crown, for satisfaction of which Hamilton consented to concur in the court measures. This was 1671". [Amsterdam, Jan Rieuwertsz], 1677. 4to. Contemporary well-preserved full vellum. Handwritten title on spine. Woodcut vignette to title-page. (40), 614, (34), 112, (8) pp. A few contemporary underlinings and marginal notes. Printed on good paper, internally fine and clean. This is a copy without the portrait of Spinoza. A contemporary note in the hand of Bishop M. Petersen on the title-page says, that the book was a gift to the bishop from Count von Brockdorff.. The rare first edition of Spinoza's "Opera Posthuma", which contains the seminal first printing of his magnum opus, the "Ethics", his philosophical masterpiece, which constitutes the first systematic exposition of "Pantheism". "[t]he "Opera Posthuma", published in the same year [as his death, 1677], have served, then and since, with the "Tractatus Theologico-Politicus", to immortalize his name." (PMM 153). With "his one indisputable masterpiece" [i.e. the "Ethics"] (Bennett, a Study of Spinoza's Ethics, p. 7), one of the greatest contributions to Western philosophy, Spinoza is considered one of the most important philosophers of all times. Laying the foundation for 18th century Enlightenment, he is indisputably recognized as one of the greatest rationalists of the 17th century. With his "Ethics" he presents his groundbreaking opposition to Descartes' mind-body-dualism and thereby changes the entire trajectory of modern philosophy. As Hegel would say in his "History of Philosophy", "You are either a Spinozist or not a philosopher at all."The real name of Benedictus Spinoza (1632-77), one of the most important thinkers … [Click Below for Full Description]

First and only editions of three rare and interesting Dutch mathematical and astronomical works, one known only from the present copy and an 18th century reference. Ad 1: An astronomical work with information on the orbits of the sun, moon and planets, the positions of the stars and dates of solar and lunar eclipses. It includes new calculations of the orbit of Mercury, based on the work of the famous astronomers Petrus Gassendus and Hevelius making use of data from its 1677 transit of the sun. An appendix gives instructions for constructing various astronomical dials for calculating the positions of the moon and planets and the times and extents of eclipses. Ad 2: A fascinating work challenging the possibility of calculating longitude at sea, whether using the position of the moon, a pendulum clocks, an hourglass or the magnetic declination. Determination of longitude was one of the greatest problems of the science of navigation and Slikker argues that the problem is insolvable. While not literally true it proved impractical for navigators until John Harrison in England developed an accurate marine chronometer, described in a 1767 publication. Measuring the exact position of the moon proved too difficult for most navigators with simple instruments.
