Pierre DUVAL (1618 - 1683)
Very handsome chart by a famous 18th century cartographer, Pierre Du Val (1618-1683) shows the North Atlantic Ocean and the coast of western Europe from Scandinavia and Great Britain down to North Africa. The chart depicts all harbors around the coastlines with no inland detail. The chart includes a rare reference to the Kimmen Line, which indicates a depth of 100 fathoms from Denmark to just west of the Shetland Isles, north of Scotland. Two compass roses with radiating rhumb lines fill the ocean and the Mediterranean. The decorative title cartouche is ornamented with two fighting ships and is topped with a figurehead and scrolls. Copperplate with original outline colour, very good condition.

DANET (Pierre).
Paris, Pralard, 1677. Fort volume in-8. 10ff. 487pp. 79ff. Int. di Linguistica e filologia Italiana, XIV congresso (2016); BLC Italian (17th cen.), p. 838; Dennis Rhodes, "An anonymous guidebook to Rome, 1677", in: British Library journal IX (1983), pp. 193-194; for other works by Sebastiani: Schudt, Le guide di Roma 411-413. Unrecorded first and only edition of a concise grammar of and guide to the Italian language (in its Tuscan variant, which had already spread to Rome by this date), dedicated to Massimiliano di Bethune, Prince of Henrichemont. Pietro de' Sebastiani, professor of the Tuscan language in Rome, follows his dedication with a brief account of the origins of the language, followed by an introduction to the pronunciation and grammar. Little is known about the author. Moneta published his first three works in a single edition in 1677, similar to the present book in dimensions and layout: a brief introduction to the Tuscan language for foreigners ("per commodità delle nationi oltramontane"), followed by two tourist guides: to the churches in Rome and their artwork, and to Rome's principal gardens, palaces, libraries, museums and galleries. Sebastiani went on to publish at least eight more small books in the years 1679 to 1686, mostly about the history and antiquities of Rome. He returned to his professional field, the Tuscan language, only in the present book. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vechtstreek antieke kaart - Petrus Schenk, c. 1720

MALEBRANCHE, Nicolas
Andre Pralard. 1677 Malebranche Philosophy Search of Truth John Locke Influence Metaphysics 3v Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive. Nicolas Malebranche A rare edition of Malebranche s principal and most important work Concerning the Search after Truth . This book would lay the foundation for all of Malebranche s philosophical ideas and reputation. He primarily focused on human error and the existence of God within human nature. This edition also includes his Laws of Communication and his responses to Regis. This work was written with the sole purpose of generalizing, clarifying, and commenting on God s miracles and actions toward man. The book was eventually placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1690 after disputes over its contents couldn t be settled. John Locke is known to have described Malebranche as an acute and ingenious author but obviously, not everyone saw his work in such light. London, Printed by William Godbid, for William Shrowsbery [sic] [Shrewsbury] at the Sign of the Bible in Duke-Lane, 1677. First Edition. Large Quarto. Portrait - Frontispice of Matthew Hale, [10], 380 pages. All edges red. Very interesting, contemporary annotations in ink to nearly every paragraph of the pages 1 - 47. The annotations closely cropped with some frequent text-loss to the annotations only (text-loss ranges from only a few letters to full words along each page but the meaning is still conceivable). The extensive annotations reflect not only on Descartes supposition on Epicurus "what colour of evidence have we of the various Configurations of his Atomes", but also the chapter in which Hale is "Touching the Excellency of the Humane Nature in general" is commented insections in which the sense of Vegetables is elaborated on as is on the senses: Touching, Smelling, Tasting, Hearing, Seeing. All annotations wonderfully speculative and in a very readable hand. Hardcover / Original boards without the original leather. Name of preowner written in ink on titlepage: "Jon. Falkner" [Jonathan Falkner or John Falkner]. From the library of Richard Meade, Ballymartle, County Cork, with his bookplate loosely inserted. Binding in poor condition. Front hinge and frontispiece cleanly detached. IMPORTANT: Besides a faded dampstain to the outer margins of some pages, the interior bookblock including the portrait of Matthew Hale (only slightly creased) in unusually excellent condition. Only in very few places some slight fraying to the edges(pages 19-22). Perfect candidate for a new … [Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredibly rare and unique 17th-century Turkish lexical book! Written by Antonio Mascis, 'Vocabolario Toscano' is a Turkish and Tuscan dictionary published in 1677 Florence. This book, which resembles Giovanni Molino's 1641 Turkish dictionary, is a lexicon of phonetics and grammar of the Turkish language. Mascis draws from Persian, Arabic, Tartar, and Greek words to help clarify many of the rudiments of the Turkish language. Published only one time, this book is notoriously rare - in fact, only one auction record was found from the last 20 years! [Attributes: First Edition]

That also made him the undisputed leader of the European coalition of England, the Dutch Republic, Austria and the German Protestant states against the aggressive policy of France in the person of King Louis XIV.With a manuscript table of contents on the first flyleaf, listing 6 of the 7 parts. Sir Walter Raleigh, a 16th-century English explorer and writer, is most known for his South American voyage in hopes of discovering the City of Gold . While imprisoned for treason, he composed his famous book History of the World a historical view of the world with a heavy emphasis on geography. Even though the work was written as a history book, Raleigh intended to provide advice to King James I of England on how to handle his reign and his feelings toward princes. This 1677 early edition includes a life of the author, which is attributed to John Shirley (Brushfield). Brushfield continues on this work: After its publication in 1614, the king endeavored to suppress it. This was not carried into effect, as the work was published [and] three separate issues of it appeared the same year. But [the first] and the second edition of 1617 were destitute of [printed] title-pages; and as these alone contained the name of the author, the work was virtually anonymous This work covers five dist … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SPINOZA (Baruch)]
S.l. [Amsterdam, Jean Rieuwerts], 1677.
