Aquinas, Thomas
Lugduni, Sumpt. Joannis Girin, & Barth. Rivi`ere in vico Mercatorio, 1677. Rare early printing of Thomas Aquinas' "most perfect work, the fruit of his mature years, in which the thought of his whole life is condensed." Folio, four volumes bound into one in one quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in seven compartments within raised bands, all edges red, woodcut printer's device to the title page, woodcut headpieces and initials. In very good condition. Library stamp to the title page. A prime example of this important and influential work. One of the most influential works of Western literature, the Summa of Aquinas was first published in 1485 as an instructional guide for theology students, including seminarians and the literate laity. A compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church, it presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. Aquinas conceived the Summa specifically as a work suited to beginning students: "Because a doctor of catholic truth ought not only to teach the proficient, but to him pertains also to instruct beginners. As the Apostle says in 1 Corinthians 3: 1-2, as to infants in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat, our proposed intention in this work is to convey those things that pertain to the Christian religion, in a way that is fitting to the instruction of beginners." Not only has the Summa Theologiae been one of the main intellectual inspirations for Thomistic philosophy, but it also had such a great influence on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Unrecorded first and only edition of a concise grammar of and guide to the Italian language (in its Tuscan variant, which had already spread to Rome by this date), dedicated to Massimiliano di Bethune, Prince of Henrichemont. Pietro de' Sebastiani, professor of the Tuscan language in Rome, follows his dedication with a brief account of the origins of the language, followed by an introduction to the pronunciation and grammar. Little is known about the author. Moneta published his first three works in a single edition in 1677, similar to the present book in dimensions and layout: a brief introduction to the Tuscan language for foreigners ("per commodità delle nationi oltramontane"), followed by two tourist guides: to the churches in Rome and their artwork, and to Rome's principal gardens, palaces, libraries, museums and galleries. Sebastiani went on to publish at least eight more small books in the years 1679 to 1686, mostly about the history and antiquities of Rome. He returned to his professional field, the Tuscan language, only in the present book. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Descartes, Rene; Louis de la Forge
Michel Bobin & Nicolas le Gras. "Seconde Edition, 1677. Full leather, raised bands, gilt title and decorations at spine, clean unmarked text, illustrated, 511 pp. + "Table", Very Good copy, old bookplate on front pastedown, small ink notation on the verso of the flyleaf, some foxing and soiling to the text, some wear to the covers with loss to the tips and edges, some cracking to the leather at the spine, some soil/discoloration to the covers too. Text in French. A rare book. Our copy housed in protective glassine. Descartes considered the human body a material machine, directed by a rational soul located in the pineal body. This book was the first attempt to cover the whole field of "animal physiology." The work is really a physiological appendix to his Discourse on method, 1637, first appeared in full in 1664, this time in French. This is the corrected second edition from 1677. Very Good.

s.l.n.d. (17e siècle), 1677. MANUSCRIT in-4. 54pp. 2ff.
