First and only editions of three rare and interesting Dutch mathematical and astronomical works, one known only from the present copy and an 18th century reference. Ad 1: An astronomical work with information on the orbits of the sun, moon and planets, the positions of the stars and dates of solar and lunar eclipses. It includes new calculations of the orbit of Mercury, based on the work of the famous astronomers Petrus Gassendus and Hevelius making use of data from its 1677 transit of the sun. An appendix gives instructions for constructing various astronomical dials for calculating the positions of the moon and planets and the times and extents of eclipses. Ad 2: A fascinating work challenging the possibility of calculating longitude at sea, whether using the position of the moon, a pendulum clocks, an hourglass or the magnetic declination. Determination of longitude was one of the greatest problems of the science of navigation and Slikker argues that the problem is insolvable. While not literally true it proved impractical for navigators until John Harrison in England developed an accurate marine chronometer, described in a 1767 publication. Measuring the exact position of the moon proved too difficult for most navigators with simple instruments. Ad 3: Only copy located of an astronomical and astrologi … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEZANÇON, Germain de ( fl. 1676)
chez Louis Gontier : 1677 : Paris : 12mo: ã6 A-2G8,4 2H6, 192 leaves, pp. [12] 370 [2], last page blank, typographic device on title signed 'DF', woodcut headpieces and initials. : A dialogue between Cariste, a cleric and advocate, Cleante, a gentleman, and Sosandre, a well known doctor. The lawyer and gentleman throw a series of objections to medicine at Sosandre who defends his profession. Bezançon insists this is not an apologia for medicine, the reader must see for himself if Sosandre's replies are reasonable. In the seventh conversation Bezançon quotes the preface to Tartuffe, to show that Molière's condemnation of the profession was no more than comic licence.Apparently a doctor himself, Bezançon wrote another polemic Les medecine pretendüe reformée (Paris, 1683) and a more strictly medical work Nouveau traité des fièvres (Paris, 1690). He is not noticed by Hoefer, Bayle and Thillaye, or Hirsch.Dedicated to Louise Henriette de Cominge, Comtesse de Grandpré.

HALE, Sir Matthew (1609-1676)
printed by William Godbid, for William Shrowsbery : 1677 : London : Folio: a4 b2 B-3B4 3C2, 104 leaves, pp. [12] 380, including the blank a1. Woodcut diagrams on pp. 119 and 123. : An important precursor of Malthus, Hale was the first to use the expression 'Geometrical Proportion' for the growth of a population. He believed that natural calamities periodically reduce the populations of animals, so maintaining a balance of nature (Garrison-Morton). Hale's work is also celebrated for his humanist approach to psychiatry (Hunter and MacAlpine). This was the first of Hale's scientific works, written in the 1660s. Hale occasionally performed experiments, but his main approach was to suggest mechanistic explanations of phenomena presented in the existing literature (Alan Cromartie in ODNB).This good large copy, with a fine impression of the portrait of Hale, was presented to Hale's fellow lawyer at Lincoln's Inn, Edward Webbe. The presentation inscription is by the publisher, William Shrewsbury, perhaps acting on Hale's instructions before his death the previous year. Shrewsbury had published Hale's Contemplations moral and divine in 1677 whch proved to be one of his best sellers. Webbe matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford, aged 17, on 17 July 1663 and is recorded as a barrister-at-law at Lincoln's Inn in 1673.In 1880 the book belonged to one E. W. Edwards of Wells, Somerset, who had it repaired by a local bookbinder for 4s. Besides the invoice he kept a letter from a friend who had helped him getting the binding work done, who writes: 'Any other of your old Library I hope you … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham Nicolas AMELOT DE LA HOUSSAYE
Chez Frederic Leonard. Edition partly original, rare, much preferable to the original 1676 which contains only the first part; it is thereby significantly increased by major parts. A frontispiece representing the Piazza San Marco in Venice. The 1677 edition contains 3 titles for each section plus an added title summarizing the whole; it is easy to perceive that we find very rarely found these three parts in libraries (see Oxford, Leeds ...) and they most often appear separately. No doubt there hath several editions that date from 1677, of which only the latter contains three parts. Also this year the sphere would suggest that it was printed elsewhere; the third part deals Ratisbone as place of publication and publisher for Jean Aubry. This part contains the Rant Louis Helian, Ambassador of France under Louis XII.Binding in Full Calf glossy brown time. Back to mute nerves decorated with cold wheels on the caps and nerves. Cold nets on the dishes. Good copy.More than a history of Venice, this is a critical study of its institutions and its laws. The book was not well received in Venice where it is burned, diplomatic relations with France soured (Amelot de la Houssaye was secretary of embassy in Venice), and the King of France was more or less forced to deliver the author Bastille (six days) to satisfy Venice. The additional studies and storytelling disputes What would the Republic with Pope Paul V. The third part of the book is a translation of a book of Fra Paolo. The Rant Louis Hélian was pronounced in 1510 before the Emperor Maximilian, she very harshly accuses the Republi … [Click Below for Full Description]

OUGHTRED, William.
1652; 1677; 1660. A remarkable sammelband containing the bulk of Oughtred's published works, with the exception of his Mathematical recreations. Oughtred (1574-1660) was one of the most important and influential mathematicians of the first half of the seventeenth century and was much admired by Newton, who described him as "a man whose judgment (if any man's) may be safely relied upon" (Correspondence III, 364). Oughtred "exercised a formative influence on a host of young men with a mathematical bent, alike at the university level and at the instrument maker's bench" (Taylor, Practitioners, p. 192). One of Oughtred's pupils, William Forster, visited him at his rectory at Albury, Surrey in 1630, and persuaded him to let him translate and publish his Latin treatises. Ad I. Third and best edition of Oughtred's most important work, edited by John Wallis, with three further treatises published here for the first time (or the first time in Latin for the last). Clavis mathematicae (The key of the mathematics now forged and filed in the English edition, 1647) was first published as Arithmeticae in numeris in 1631 and contained all that was then known in arithmetic and algebra. Both popular and hugely influential, both in England and on the Continent, the Clavis was translated into English in 1647 by Robert Wood and as late as 1694 a new translation by Halley was published. It was here that Oughtred introduced the signs x for multiplication and :: for proportion, along with many other signs and abbreviations which have not been adopted, though in a number of cases his lead has bee … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marc Vulson de la Colombiere (1590?-1658)
Amsterdam" (fictitious imprint): Jean Sambix" (pseudonym), 1677. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. 2 parts in one volume. Engraved frontispiece, [5] ff., 92 pp. (including Letter "aux Dames" and Avertissement), 3 ff. (Table des questions); 78 pp. (front endpaper excised). Contemporary French calf (headcap and top two corners of binding unobtrusively repaired). Early ownership inscription of Jan Laborde who apparently purchased the book in Paris in November, 1693. An extremely curious book, apparently overlooked by the standard authorities. That the work was intended for female audiences is attested by the 7-page letter "Aux Dames" immediately following the title page. The first part contains a set of DIVINATIONS with a list of 71 questions to ask the ORACLE, with 71 sheets each containing 16 responses (one for each quadrant of the wheel of fortune represented on the frontispiece), a total of 1136 answers possible for each question. At the end of the questions are printed 10 lines where the inquisitor can write questions for to the oracle. The rules of "The Game" are explained in a prophetic warning. First published in Paris in 1647, our copy belongs to a slightly later Amsterdam edition and features a similarly curious engraved frontispiece of Fortuna at her wheel, below which are four inquisitors (two male and two female). The second part presents a 78-page analysis of the curious symbolism of COLORS, MYSTICAL SYMBOLS, the MEANINGS OF LOVE, ARMORIAL DEVICES, etc., all of which can be explained by any kind of TREES, HERBS, and FLOWERS. The name of the printer is given … [Click Below for Full Description]
