Bon exemplaire. Guibert, 203.

Des-Cartes, Renati
Amstelodami, Apud Danielem Elsevirium, 1677. [Click Below for Full Description]

Gage, Thomas
London: A. Clark, 1677. Third edition. 8vo, titlepage, 3ff, folding map, pp 447 (misnumbered 547), and 9ff of index. "The third Edition enlarged by the Author, with a new and accurate Map." Sabin notes that the final chapter of the first edition, relating his trip to Rome, was suppressed in all later editions. Gage was a consummate rascal and his story of life in Mexico -- a unique relation in its time, as non-Spaniards were not alllowed into the Spanish colonies -- provided the only picture of the places described available in the English-speaking world. He was a Dominican priest in Mexico and Guatemala for about 10 years before making his "escape" back to England, funded by the theft of his parishioners' contributions, and ready and willing to stir up mischief for the Spanish, of which this book is one evidence. The other is the island of Jamaica, which he convinced Cromwell to seize, being insufficiently protected by the Spanish. Provenance of this copy: on ffep is the distinguished bookplate of G.R.G. Conway (1873 - 1926?), who was an English civil engineer who spent a number of years in Mexico as director of utility companies; but he was also a historian of Mexico and great collector: he issued in a very limited edition a selection of Gage's book in 1920. On front paste down is the bookplate of Frederick Ducane Godman (1834 - 1919), English natural scientist, co-author of Biologia Centrali-Americanum. Sabin 26300. Contemporary speckled calf, original spine relaid, with raised bands and title piece, in slipcase. Map in excellent condition: very good copy.

OUGHTRED, William.
1652; 1677; 1660. A remarkable sammelband containing the bulk of Oughtred's published works, with the exception of his Mathematical recreations. Oughtred (1574-1660) was one of the most important and influential mathematicians of the first half of the seventeenth century and was much admired by Newton, who described him as "a man whose judgment (if any man's) may be safely relied upon" (Correspondence III, 364). Oughtred "exercised a formative influence on a host of young men with a mathematical bent, alike at the university level and at the instrument maker's bench" (Taylor, Practitioners, p. 192). One of Oughtred's pupils, William Forster, visited him at his rectory at Albury, Surrey in 1630, and persuaded him to let him translate and publish his Latin treatises. Ad I. Third and best edition of Oughtred's most important work, edited by John Wallis, with three further treatises published here for the first time (or the first time in Latin for the last). Clavis mathematicae (The key of the mathematics now forged and filed in the English edition, 1647) was first published as Arithmeticae in numeris in 1631 and contained all that was then known in arithmetic and algebra. Both popular and hugely influential, both in England and on the Continent, the Clavis was translated into English in 1647 by Robert Wood and as late as 1694 a new translation by Halley was published. It was here that Oughtred introduced the signs x for multiplication and :: for proportion, along with many other signs and abbreviations which have not been adopted, though in a number of cases his lead has bee … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boyle, Roger, Earl of Orrey
In the Savoy, by T.N. for Henry Herringham, London, 1677. Folio. L.P. p.p. 206. Fine contemporary calf. Fine frontis equestrian portrait of Charles ii plus 6 double page plates. Armorial B.P.Roger Boyle, Lord Broghill, Earl of Orrery (1621-1679), son of Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, elder brother of Robert the scientist, was born at Lismore, Co. Waterford. He was deputy in Inchiquin’s Munster Command during theConfederate War and was bitterly opposed to the cessation of arms. After The execution of Charles 1, Boyle retired to his Somerset estate and was about to leave for the Continent to plot for the restoration of the Stuarts, when he was summoned by Cromwell who offered him the choice of imprisonment in the Tower or service under the Commonwealth. He accepted the latter and set off for Ireland, and late in 1649, he met Cromwell near Waterford, with 1,500 men whomhe had raised. He assisted at the Sieges of Clonmel and Limerick, destroyed Lord Muskerry’s royalist-confederate force at Macroom and executed the CatholicBishop, Boethius MacEgan. Afterwards in England he continued to be one of Cromwell’s most trusted friends and advisers. Not satisfied however with Cromwell’s successor he returned to Ireland and with Coote seized Youghal, Clonmel, Carlow, Limerick, Drogheda, Galway and Athlone for the King, and helped to end the rule of the Cromwellians there. After the restoration he was made Earl of Orrery, Lord Justice, and President of Munster, and in the latter capacity, he successfully defeated the attempt by Duke of Beaufort, Admiral of France, to land at Kinsale. In 1661 … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPINOZA, B. DE).
(Amsterdam, J. Rieuwertsz), 1677. With some illustrations and diagrams in the text, woodcut vignette on title. (40), 614, (32, index), (2), 112, (8) pp. 4to. Contemporary vellum, blind-stamped ornament in center of both sides, upper joint and endpapers expertly repaired, spine somewhat darkened. PMM 153; Van der Linde 22; Kingma-Offenberg 24; Wolf Collection, 378; Knuttel 377. First edition of Spinoza's posthumous works, including the first edition of the world-famous Ethica, which "have served, then and since, with the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, to immortalize his name" (PMM 153). These posthumous works were published by Jan Rieuwertsz, an Amsterdam bookseller and friend of Spinoza, and edited by him together with the merchant Jarig Jelles, who probably wrote the preface. It contains the first publication of the Ethics. The remainder comprises the Tractatus Politicus- his last, unfinished production, which develops a theory of law and government akin to that of Hobbes; the Tractatus de Intellectus Emendatione, also unfinished; a selection of letters- restricted, owing to the dangers of publishing correspondence on questions of politics and theology; and, after an index, a Compendium Grammatices Linguae Hebraeae, paginated separately.Only one day before his death Spinoza arranged that his posthumous works should be sent to Jan Rieuwertsz in Amsterdam, who also published his Principia of Descartes and the Tractatus-theologico-politicus. In the book neither author, nor place nor editor are mentioned. This was no superfluous precaution, for in 1678, hardly one year after … [Click Below for Full Description]
