The Natural History of Oxfordshire, being an Essay toward the Natural History of England.

Printed at the Theater in Oxford ; And in London : At Mr. S. Millers ., Oxford 1677 - Hardcover. Folio. [xii] + 360pp. + [x] [index]. Beautiful full period-style leather binding by Bernard C. Middleton. Panelled brown calf; raised bands & gilt titling to spine, intricate blind tooled decorations to boards. Engraved title-page vignette, headpiece and decorative initial, and 16 full-page engraved plates by Michael Burghers. The author, Robert Plot (1640 – 1696) was an academic, antiquarian and naturalist, who graduated from Magdalen Hall, Oxford in 1658, and subesequently became its dean and vice principal before moving to University College in 1676. An enthusiastic antiquarian and polymath, he scoured the local countryside collecting antiquities and cataloguing his finds and observations; gathering the material that would form the basis of "The Natural History of Oxfordshire." At the time the notion of "natural history" was much broader then, and rather than having the modern emphasis on plants and animals, Plot was more concerned with geographical and geological features, although his observations covered all things natural, as well as a number that might be considered not (ie human activities, man-made phenomena, etc.). Some indication of this diversity can be seen in his chapter headings: "Of the Heavens and Air," "Of the Waters," "Of the Earths," "Of Stones," "Of Formed Stones," "Of Plants," "Of Brutes," "Of Men and Women" "Of Arts" and "Of Antiquities." Plot seemed to have a special eye for the curious and bizarre, and included many anomalous objects. His work is largely remembered on account of this, and also as being, it is said, the first book to publish an illustration of a dinosaur bone, although he misidentified it as the bone of some ancient (human) giant. He also devoted a chapter to what he called "formed stones" - objects that resembled human or animal body parts, but while he allowed that some of these might be fossils (a term and concept just coming into vogue) he argued that others were deliberately-fashioned objects, a part of some Divine plan. In addition to being appointed the first keeper of Ashmolean Museum in 1683, Plot was also made the First Professor of Chemistry at Oxford, in the charge of the new laboratory that was housed in the same building, which must have been especially useful as he is said to have been a practicing alchemist. The pre-title page (Imprimatur - facing the title page) has the date April 13, 1676, which has apparently caused some cataloguers to refer to it as 1676 publication, whereas the actual year of publication is that on the title-page, 1677. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. The large folding map of Oxfordshire is missing - as seems to be the case with most copys. Pre-title and title-page a little dusty and with a few light marks to the margins. Faint pale tide- marks to top-corners of title-page and a few subsequent leaves, some very modest wrinkling - heaviest at the pre-title, still a very handsome, otherwise clean copy in VG+ antiquarian condition.       BAMBERG, JOH.

London: H.C. for H. Brome, 1677. Third Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Contemporary boards with later rebacking which has failed, spine worn and chipped with loss at the head, front board detached along with the free endpaper. Mild browning internally, first signatures loose, scattered minor stains, generally quite clean. With an inscription from Christopher Morley and his wife Helen to his friends Martin and Elsie Hawley Mclanahan dated Christmas 1922. Lacking the portrait which is sometimes present (especially in the editions paired with his Receipts in Chirurgery). (iv), 251, (9)pp. Cagle 646, Bitting 124 (1669 1st ed.), Simon 502 (1st ed.) Morley and Mclanahan had a long friendship centering on food and wine - writes Morley: "I have scoured the town, dear Caliph, for a Closet of Sir Kenelm Digby". Morley had purloined the name Kenelm Digby for his detective story "The Curious Case of Kenelm Digby" originally collected in "Tales from a Rolltop Desk" (1921). Digby was one of the great travelers of his age and spoke a reputed 10 or 12 languages, this is largely a collection from his travels and is more representative of European cookery than a usual English cookbook. Of Digby, John Aubrey said "had he been drop't out of the clowdes in any part of the world, he would have made himselfe respected." And Elizabeth David: "His book is a beautiful piece of English kitchen literature as well as a collection of recipes set down with considerable accuracy." Size: 12mo (duodecimo).       Joan. Ant. Huguetan, Lugduni (Lyon) 1677 - Octavo. [28], 807, [18]pp. Original full vellum with contemporary handwritten title on spine. Engraved pictorial frontispiece. Title-page in red and black lettering with engraved vignette. Decorative initials and headpieces. Engraved portrait of Thomas Bartholin. This edition of Bartholin's famous anatomy printed in Lyon follows in all essentials the so-called 4th edition printed in Leiden in 1673. These two editions are the largest published of Bartholin's anatomy, containing 40 more engravings than the preceding editions. Includes 14 plates (12 folding), 97 labeled plates or "tabula" in the text plus 5 additional illustrations not labeled as "tabula". There are 3 instances where the sequential numbering of tabula might normally indicate a missing illustration (XXXII before page 212, XLIX before page 296, and VIII before page 754). In each case, we believe the book complete, and each a case of simple mislabeling and the inconsistent treatment of folding plate numbering. Some edge wear on binding with head of spine chipped, and minor soiling and foxing on boards and spine. Front hinge starting. Some damp-staining on outer margin of pages. Sporadic foxing throughout. Worming between pp 745-775. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in fair to good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pharmacia in artis forman redacta, experimentis observationibus et discursu et discursu perpetuo illustrata.

Amsterdam, Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1677. 4to. With etched frontispiece and 6 etched folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe. 19th-century boards.

Adelung II, pp. 359-360; Landwehr, De Hooghe Book Illustrator 46; Muller, Bibl. Neerlando-Russe 200; Tiele, Bibl. 602; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1677.04. First edition of a valuable account detailing a Dutch embassy to Russia (1675-1676). The objective was to gain Russian participation in the anti-Swedish and anti-French alliance, and Koenraad Klenk, with his expert knowledge of Russian language and culture, was the ideal choice to lead the embassy. The mission was subsidized with more than 50,000 guilders, an extraordinary amount which was even exceeded during the journey. Although the embassy was well received and the Russians were showered with gifts, Klenk failed to persuade the Tsar to enter into war with Sweden. The six impressively evocative plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are typical examples of his rich allegorical imagery. Final leaves restored, with the missing text supplied in manuscrip, some soling, binding worn. An excellent source for the history of Russia and its foreign relations during the reign of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich.

The last treatise is by A. Vater and described the exotic plants in the Wittenberg Botanical Garden.//The first work together with an appendix published in 1691 describes the plants growing in the medical garden of Altdorf. It is illustrated with a fine double-page engraving 'Hortus Medicus Altdorffinus' showing the town of Altdorf at the rear and the botanical garden at the front.         Opera posthuma, Quorum series post Praefationem exhibetur

[Amsterdam:] [Jan Rieuwertsz,], 1677. Quarto (198 × 155 mm). Contemporary vellum over boards, with overlapping edges, spine hand lettered and dated in ink, sprinkled edges. Ownership inscription of Wolfgang Krämer dated 1916, with his ownership stamp and exlibris to free endpaper. Initials to each part supplied in red. Spine label sometime removed. A crisp, clean copy. First edition of Spinoza's Opera posthuma, including all his major philosophical writings, with the exception of the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. "The Opera posthuma... include his Treatise on the Correction of the Understanding which was written during his residence near Leyden, the Ethics demonstrated according to the Geometrical Order, which is his most important work, and the Political Treatise... The most conspicuous idea of Spinoza's philosophy is that there is only one substance, the infinite divine substance which is identified with Nature; Deus sive Natura, God or Nature. And a striking feature of this philosophy as it is presented in the Ethics is the geometrical form of its presentation. This work is divided into five parts in which the following subjects are treated in turn: God, the nature and origin of the mind, the origin and nature of the emotions, the power of the intellect or human freedom" (Copleston, A History of Philosophy IV, p. 206). Like most copies of the Opera, this copy does not have the portrait, which was only issued after publication.

Highly important anti-Trinitarian text. Very Rare. No copies at auction in 30 years. Unitarians can trace their roots back to the 16th Century. The belief spread from Poland, to what was then Transylvania (Romania), through England and on to America where it especially thrived in New England. Michael Servetus seems to be considered the founder of the movement. Servetus a Roman Catholic Spanish physician escaped from the inquisition in France and went to Geneva. Here in 1553 he was burned alive after a three-month trial into his anti-Trinitarian beliefs. "Servetus discovered that in the uncorrupted Greek New Testament there was no text to justify the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. He published two books arguing that Christians should bring their views of God and Jesus into conformity with Jewish and Muslim monotheism. Hence the word "Unitarian" -- God as unity, or one" - Canadian Unitarian Council Website. These beliefs sometimes known as Sabellianism were to become known as Socianism after Italian born Faustus Socinus. He developed anti-Trinitarian belief into a more organised teaching. At this time he was living in Poland and his followers were sometimes called the Minor Reformed Church. Forced out of Poland again by persecution many merged with the Unitarians in Transylvania and from there the belief spread to England. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, leaders of the American Revolution, were all Unitarians. Interestingly, this book also contains one of the earliest appearances of the word Holocaust, lending to the interesting debate surrounding its etymology. It is present here in a religious sense of sacrificial offering. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Commentary on the Prophecy of Malachi

Oxford - Printed at the Theatre 1677 - A very scarce and importantearly volume bound in decorative, paper covered boards. Edward Pococke (1604-1691) was an English Orientalist and biblical scholar. His most important works were a Lexicon heptaglotton (1669) and English commentaries on Micah (1677), Malachi (1677), Hosea (1685) and Joel (1691). Malachi or Mal'achi was a prophet in the Bible, the Christian Old Testament and Jewish Tanakh. Condition: The binding is fairly firm, although the cords are visible in several places as you might expect from an original paper binding of this period. Both covers and all internal pages are securely attached. There is wear to the extremities, including rubbing to the boards and some slightchips to the spine. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, apart from the occasional handling mark and very minor brown spot. Overall, this scarce volume is in very good condition. Wing B5109. Edward Brown was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Browne, the author of 'Pseudodoxia Epidemica'. Like his father Edward trained as a physician and rounded off his education with a grand tour of Europe. Not wishing to take up his profession immediately he persauded his father to allow him to make another foreign journey, during which he visited the Low Countries, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Serbia. While abroad he sent letters home, which contained, among other things, information on the gold, silver, and copper mines in Hungary, Transylvania, and Austria. Three of these letters were published in 'Philosophical Transactions'. It was Brown's father who encouraged him to adapt these letters for publication as books; 'A brief account of some travels in Hungaria, Servia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Thessaly, Austria, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, and Friuli' (1673) and; 'An Account of Several Travels Through a Great Part of Germany (1677). , 4to , [2] 179 [1] pp .

London: Benj. Tooke. 1677. "[Bound with:] Brown, Edward. A brief account of some travels in Hungaria, Servia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Thessaly, Austria, Syria, Carinthia, Carniola, and Gruilki. As also some observations on the gold, silver, copper, quick-silver mines, baths, and mineral waters in those parts: with the figures of some habits and remarkable places (London: Benj. ""The author was the son of the distinguished physician, Sir Thomas Browne, and like his father was also a physician. As he had recommendations to people of the highest rank and learning, he had opportunities for observation superior to those of the ordinary traveller, who was generally in a hurry. He gives details of the manner of travelling usually omitted by the average man; he describes the sights to be seen in the light of their historical background. The working of the Hungarian and Austrian mines were then practically unknown to England, as were also some of the countries themselves he visited"" (Cox I, p. 88). & & ""Reports of these travels undoubtedly led to Newton's famous letter to Francis Aston, of May 18, 1669, on the eve of his departure to the continent. Newton's early chemical interests were certainly stimulated by Browne's reports on the quicksilver mines in Carinthia. Browne's two books are a mine of information on questions which interested early members of the Royal society"" (Babson 334). & & Wing B5109 & B5110; Hoover catalogue 172; Wellcome II, p. 251 (both titles bound together); Osler 4409; Kress S1385 (defective) & S1477; Babson 334 & 335; Cox I, P. 108 (giving incorrect date)."
