        L'America Settentrionale

Map taken from "Mercurio Geografico, a collection of maps published in Rome between 1660 and 1730 from the printing de Rossi. Over the years, the atlas was enriched by a growing number of cards. Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi's map of North America is based on the work of French cartographer, Guillaume Sanson, and his map of 1669. De Rossi also includes a dominant island California as Sanson had done. The map was published in De Rossi's "Mercurio Geografico" - this example is the first state of the map dated 1677 (later states appeared in 1687 and c.1715). As well as the island form given to California, De Rossi also shows an interesting delineation of five Great Lakes with the western parts still undefined in this state. Florida is shown in a rather "squat" form yet coastal detail further north, including the Chesapeake, Cape Cod and so on, is very much recognisable. According to Burden, it is not known whether De Rossi's work had Sanson's permission or whether it was direct plagiarism - either way, Sanson is credited in the decorative title cartouche at upper right. A good example of Italian cartography and the Europe - wide thirst for knowledge of the New World. Copper engraving, coloring contemporary contours in excellent condition. Roma Rome P. D.         Autograph manuscript signed ("Petr").

No place or date. - 4to. 1 p. (18 lines). Curious list of planetary and astrological (zodiac) symbols, all annotated in Russian and signed by Czar Peter the Great, who may have been introduced to astrology and alchemy by his chief physician, the state councillor Robert Erskine (1677-1718), known for his Paracelsian leanings. "The extent of Erskine’s absorption in alchemical questions is demonstrated in a flurry of letters he received in August and September 1717 from Johannes de Wilde, a self-styled 'Philochimicus' in Amsterdam. De Wilde provides plentiful evidence of Erskine’s embrace of iatrochemistry. On August 10, 1717, for example, de Wilde wrote that 'I have received by report that Your Excellency regards Arcana Medico-Chimica as of great value.' The 'philochimicus' then seeks to promote his alchemical adeptness by providing Erskine with a recipe for potable gold ('aurum potabile'). Rather than dismiss de Wilde as a charlatan, Erskine actually proposed to take him into service in St. Petersburg. According to de Wilde, the only reason he did not accept the offer was due to his suffering from 'fluxum haemorrhoidum'. Interestingly, de Wilde promoted his alchemical services in a variety of ways, ranging from offering to produce Johannes Baptista van Helmont’s 'aurum horizontale', to bolstering the Tsar’s treasury with gold and silver and to providing a 'delightful scent' of an 'aqua rosa' for Catherine, Peter’s wife" (R. Collis, Introduction to: A Curious Tsar. Peter the Great and Discovering Nature’s Secrets in Amsterdam. Exhibition catalogue, 2013). - A few paper flaws in the folds, but altogether well-preserved.         The Primitive Origination of Mankind, considered and examined According to The Light of Nature.

London: printed by William Godbid, for William Shrowsbery,, 1677. Folio (308 × 187 mm). Contemporary calf, skilfully rebacked to style with red morocco label. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Hale by F. H. Van Hove. A very good copy, clean and well-margined. First edition. The great jurist "argues for the creation of the human race by an intelligent agent; its arguments touch on numerous topics, including the impossibility of an infinite succession, the character of time and space, the demographic tendencies of modern England and of ancient Israel, and the unlikelihood of spontaneous generation in anything more complex than a mouse" (ODNB). Anticipating Malthus, Hale seems to be the first to use the expression "geometrical proportion" for the growth of population. Garrison & Morton put this title at the head of their list of books on evolution.

Radices seu Dictionnarium Linguae Latinae, in quo singulae voces suis radicibus subjiciuntur In Usum Serenissimi Delphini

Paris, Pralard, 1677. - Fort volume in-8. 10ff. 487pp. 79ff.

TITUS AND BERENICE, A TRAGEDY, ACTED AT THE DUKE'S THEATRE WITH A FARCE CALLED THE CHEATS OF SCAPIN.

London: Printed for Richard Tonson, 1677. - [8],1,[7],17-32,43-50,33-62,[2]pp. Quarto. Unsigned early 20th century three quarter calf, gilt labels, a.e.g. Foretips and spine extremities a bit rubbed, some faint old damp spotting and discoloration in the fore- margin, modest tanning and occasional smudges; a good copy. First edition. In this copy, C1 is in the canceled state, with the reading "Paul, I ne're expected." The first work is an adaptation of Racine's BÉRÉNICE, and the latter of Molière's LES FOURBERIES DE SCAPIN. A relatively early publication in Otway's brief career: "Both tragedy and farce were acted on the same night in February 1676-7, and were published shortly afterwards in a single volume, which was dedicated to Lord Rochester. A reprint appeared in 1701. Mrs. Barry played in both pieces; Betterton only in the tragedy, where he took the role of Titus. The farce kept the stage till the present century. The approval bestowed on his version of ‘Scapin’ encouraged Otway to try his fortune in comedy." - DNB NCBEL II:748. ESTC R9537. WING O566.

THE PRIMITIVE ORIGINATION OF MANKIND, CONSIDERED AND EXAMINED ACCORDING TO THE LIGHT OF NATURE

London: William Godbid for William Shrowsbery, 1677. FIRST EDITION y. This religio-scientific treatise dealing with population growth, written by one of England's greatest legal minds, sets forth ideas that anticipate Malthus by more than a century. According to Garrison-Morton, Hale--who was the first to use the term "geometrical progression" to explain population growth--"believed that in animals, especially insects, various natural calamities reduce the numbers to low levels intermittently, so maintaining a balance of nature." Hale indicates that among humans, a population could double in just 35 years, were it not for the checking effects of such things as famine, wars, floods, and pestilence. Sir Matthew Hale (1609-76), Chief Justice of the King's Bench, was widely respected during his lifetime as a truly equitable jurist, one of few court officials to earn the respect of both Parliamentarians and Royalists. While well known for numerous important legal works during his lifetime, as he neared the end of his life Hale arranged for the publication of his other writings on natural philosophy, history, and religion, among which was included the present work. This particular copy was once owned by Samuel Bosanquet (1744-1806), a scion of the powerful Huguenot family that shaped the development of finance in modern Britain. Bosanquet served as Governor of the Bank of England, as well as magistrate, deputy lieutenant, and high sheriff of Essex.. 305 x 197 mm. (12 x 7 3/4"). 7 p.l. (including frontispiece), 380 pp. FIRST EDITION. Recent retrospective calf by Courtland Benson. Engraved printer's device on title, engraved portrait frontispiece. Front endpaper with signature of Samuel Bosanquet (see below); occasional annotations in ink and pencil. Garrison-Morton 215; Wing H-258. Small, neat repair to short marginal tear on frontispiece, isolated mild marginal foxing or small stains, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE COPY, especially clean and fresh, with ample margins, and in an unworn sympathetic binding.

1677 - Venezia, G. B. Brigna, 1677. In 8vo (cm. 15); pergamena rigida coeva; pp. (48), 368.

1677 - "Cosmography, In Four Books. Contayning The Chorographie & Historie Of The Whole World, And All The Principall Kingdomes Provinces Seas And Isles Thereof. The 5th Edition Corrected & Inlarged By The Author . London Printed For Anne Seile, 1677". Folio. Engraved Tp, with four folding maps of each of the known continents. The printed title appears in red and black Rebound in full calf and new endapers, the pages are age toned. The maps of each continent are in the series begun in 1652 by Henry Seile for earlier editions of "Cosmography.", and which include a distinctive map of the New World showing California as an island. The volume ends with "An Appendix To The Former Work, Endeavouring Of A Discovery Of The Unknown Parts Of The World." Publisher's advertisement at the very end of the volume is by way of apology to the reader for inconsistency in the page numbering system! A fascinating explanation of the state of geographic knowledge at this time. It is interesting to note the imprint of Anna Seile on each map, widow of Henry and one of the few women to be involved in the C17th map trade.

The Common Interest of King and People: Shewing the Original, Antiquity and Excellency of Monarchy, Compared with Aristocracy and Democracy, And particularly of pure English Monarchy: and that Absolute, Papal and Presbyterian Popular Supremacy Are utterly inconsistent with Prerogative, Property and Liberty.

London: Jonathan Edwin,, 1677. Octavo (185 x 110). Contemporary mottled calf, neatly rebacked, red morocco label. Early ownership inscription to free endpaper Some surface wear to covers. Bound without the engraved portrait of Charles II. First edition. "Nalson was a prolific writer as well as a country clergyman and his platform, in his own words, was consistently that of a 'true Church of England King's Protestant' (J. Nalson, The True Protestant's Appeal, 1681, 1). 'I do perfectly hate and abhor all Popery, superstition and innovation in the church', he declared. 'I do no less detest and abhor all other schismatical practices and persuasions, treacherous and disloyal doctrines and actions of Commonwealth Protestants'(ibid.). Nalson unswervingly indulged these convictions in a stream of publications which gushed forth in the unsettled years 1677 to 1685 ... His style was trenchant, hard-hitting, polemical, vivid, and vitriolic. Although he frequently used the term loosely as a convenient holdall, presbyterianism was a recurring target for attack by Nalson and in The Common Interest of King and People (1677) was roundly denounced as 'that revived hydra of the lake of Geneva, with its many headed progeny, Anabaptists, Quakers, Levellers etc' (p. 201)." Bel exemplaire.
