FRANZINI, Girolamo
In Roma, per il sue. 1672. 1672 Marvelous Antiquities of ROME Franzini Illustrated Colossus of Rhodes RUINS Girolamo Franzini was a 16th-century Italian historian known for his accounts of the antiquities of Rome. In 1588, Pope Sixtus V announced the first of four special holy years in Rome and was thus the destination for many travelers. Franzini published a work that would help those arriving in Rome to understand the antiquities of the city. First published, oddly, in Venice the same year, ‘The Marvelous Things of the city of Rome’ became one of several works to explore the antiquities of Rome during that time. However, Franzini featured the work of Andrea Palladio whose ‘Antiquity of Rome’ included engravings that enriched the first and all subsequent editions of Franzini’s work. According to Brach, the illustrations in this work were constantly used to illustrated travel guides of Rome for over 150 years! ‘Marvelous Things’ was the first true city guide of Rome. It would undergo numerous editions and edits until the end of the 17th-century. This 1672 edition was published in Rome and features the 50 incredible woodcuts that were first seen in the 16th-century versions. These illustrations depict ancient ruins, temples, mythological figures, and a fascinating illustration of the Colossus of Rhodes! An impressive work! Grew, Nehemiah
London: Printed for Spencer Hickman, 1672. First Edition. Contemporary calf binding with later red morocco spine label, handsomely rebacked. Octavo measuring 90 x 160 mm (pages). Collates: (32), 186 (mispaginated 198 as reported by ESTC), (22) pages with 3 folding engraved plates at rear: complete, including the rare license leaf before the title. Internally an exceptionally clean copy, and noticeably larger than other copies that have recently come to market. A forefather in the field of plant anatomy, Grew was the first to explore how plants develop organs and tissues, and in what ways they reproduce. His work The Anatomy of Vegetables was a particular point of pride, and soon after its release he presented four copies to the Royal Society; and it resulted in his election as a fellow in 1673. Considered an important botanical work that "proclaimed new truths or hypotheses in science" (Dibner), Grew himself seemed to understand that he was breaking entirely new ground. "Of what antiquity the Anatomy of Animals is, and how great have been its Improvements of later years is well known. That of Vegetables is a subject matter which from all ages to this day hath not only lain uncultivated; but for ought I know, except some observations from our country-men, hath not been so much as thought upon." Grew's text sets out as a corrective, and from it has sprung a diverse and important field of scientific inquiry. ESTC R30321. Wing G1946. Welcome III 164. Dibner Heralds of Science 21.

A few small scuffs to binding; six folding plates with old repairs to tears crossing images, a very occasional pale dampstain at end. Provenance: pale indistinct inkstamp on title; purchased from Paul and Marianne Gourary, 1964. FIRST EDITION: "the best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection" (Hofer). Celebrating Ferdinand III's (1199-1252) canonization by Pope Clement X, the work was commissioned by the Cathedral of Seville, and the text written by the poet, chronicler and translator Fernando de la Torre Farfán. Illustrating his text and documenting the elaborate festivities were the best Seville artists of the age. The 1671 procession followed the Corpus Christi model, with bell-ringing, fireworks, and lavish street adornment. "The volume is interesting not only as a curious piece of local history, but as being illustrated wholly by artists of Seville. The Triunfo and the other decorations, in the heavy overloaded style of the day, were designed and executed under the direction of the painter, Juan de Valdés Leal (1630-1690), and the sculptor, Bernardo Simon de Pineda, the former hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

GENGA, BERNARDINO. - [THE FOUNDATION OF SURGICAL ANATOMY]
Rome, Nicoloò Angelo Tinassi, 1672. Small 8vo. Near contemporary full calf biding with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. All edges of boards gilt. Hinges, capitals and corners with wear. Cords showing at front hinge, but still tight. Slight spotting to margins of title-page and some scattered brownspotting (not heavy). Overall a fine, unrestored copy with wide margins. Book plate to inside of front board and an old library stamp (Académie de Chirurgie) to title-page. (26), 455, (1) pp. Engraved frontispiece. ¶ The rare first edition of the first book devoted entirely to surgical anatomy. Genga's milestone work founded the discipline of anatomical surgery; it was frequently reprinted and remained a widely used manual for decades after its first appearance. Genga furthermore, in the tract appended to this work (i.e the "Breve Discorso" on the circulation of the blood, pp. 420-448), showed himself to be one of the first Italians to accept Harvey's theory on the circulation of blood. "Though anatomy was hitherto cultivated with much success as illustrating the natural history and morbid states of the human body, yet little had been done for the elucidation of local diseases, and the surgical means by which they may have been successfully treated. The idea of applying anatomical knowledge directly to this purpose appears to have originated with Barnardin Genga, a Roman surgeon, who published in 1672, at Rome, a work entitled "Surgical Anatomy, or the Anatomical History of the Bones and Muscles of the Human Body, with the description of the Blood-vessels". Literae nomine is a surreptitious publication of dispatches written by Milton in his capacity of Latin secretary to the Council of State, between the years 1649 and 1659. First published in 1676 under title : Literae pseudo-senatus anglicani, Cromwellii.;The Epistolæ Obscurorum Virorum (English: Letters of Obscure Men) was a celebrated collection of satirical Latin letters which appeared 1515-1519 in Hagenau, Germany. They support the German Humanist scholar Johann Reuchlin and they mock the doctrines and modes of living of the scholastics and monks, mainly by pretending to be letters from fanatic Christian theologians discussing whether all Jewish books should be burned as un-Christian or not. The book was banned in many places, and in regard of the rise of Martin Luther's Protestant Reformation, Pope Leo X excommunicated the authors, readers, and disseminators of the Epistolæ Obscurorum Virorum in 1517, by citing the fact that the discussed matter of burning all Jewish books, especially the Talmud, had never been held as a majority view among Christian scholars. Engraved title + 41 double-page engraved charts on thick paper + 16 pages of text, all handcoloured in outline by a contemporary hand. Internally a very fine copy. CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURED COPY OF THE ZEEATLAS, WITH 41 MAPS, INCLUDING THE WORLD MAP AND THE 11 CHARTS OF THE AMERICAS. These include California as an island ('Paskaerte van Nova Granada en t'Eylandt California'; map 40), and the rare and very desirable Hudson River map ('Paskaert van de Zuydt en Noordt Revier'; map 34). This latter is omitted from later issues with 40 maps only. The text includes a short history of the origin and growth of navigation. Koeman IV Goos 10, Goos was "one of the best known maritime booksellers of Amsterdam" (Koeman), and responsible for publishing a number of different sea-atlases or pilots. His background was more as an engraver - his father Abraham was also a skilled engraver. Unlike Doncker and his other contemporaries, Pieter Goos's intention was less to produce a functional sea-atlas but more a visually appealing volume to be consulted in a library environment - hence the emphasis on the title-page on the utility of the atlas to "Heeren en Kooplieden" (gentlemen and merchants) in advance of "Schippers en Stuurlieden" (pilots and seamen). The standard form of the index calls for forty charts, but the Zee-Atlas was also available with forty-one charts, and indivudual examples of the various editions can be found with an additional chart, as here, which is the most desirable of the charts in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Misprinted page numbers 464 and 456 (for 495 and 496). Rare in any condition, particularly when unrestored; French apothecary and reputed seer Michel de Nostredame (December 1503 – July 1566) issued his Les Propheties originally in 1555 and gained world-wide fame. In 1672, Theophilus de Garencières, a French apothecary who came to England with the French ambassador in the 1650s, was the first to translate Nostradamus into English, creating the bilingual text with the French quatrains with accompanying English translations and annotations; Woodcuts .

GUERICKE, Otto von.
Johanned Jansson Waesberge, Amsterdam. First edition of this book "of prime importance in electrical discovery, air-pressure and the vacuum pump." The Experimenta nova (1672) ranks next to Gilbert’s De magnete (1611) in the number and importance of electrical discoveries described" (Sparrow).?Dibner, Heralds of Science 55; Evans, First Editions of Epochal Achievements in the History of Science 30; Horblit, One Hundred Books Famous in Science 44; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 90; Norman 952. "Otto von Guericke, German natural philosopher, produced what had been sought since antiquity-the vacuum. Inspired by the findings of Galileo, Pascal, and Torricelli, he conducted Magdeburg hemisphere experiments. By means of an air pump, he extracted the air from two hemispheres of copper which had been securely sealed and demonstrated that even sixteen horses pulling in opposite directions could not separate them. Experimenta nova (ut vocantu) Magdeburgica de vacuo spatio (1672) ranks next to Gilbert’s [De magnete, 1611] in the number and importance of electrical discoveries described, for von Guericke was also an investigator in this field. He invented a machine by which he demonstrated the existence of electrical repulsions as well as electrical attractions." "Guericke’s invention of the air pump grew out of his interest in the nature of space, particularly in Descartes's belief in the equivalence of space and matter and denial of the possibility of vacuum. Guericke suspected otherwise, and, after several false starts, managed to construct a hollow apparatus from which he evacuated … [Click Below for Full Description]

PUFENDORF, SAMUEL von. - [THE STATE OF NATURE IS PEACE]
Londini Scanorum (Lund), Adami Junghaus - Vitus Haberegger, 1672. 4to. Contemporary full calf with double blindstamped borders to boards. Spine restored and hinges weak. Otherwise very nice. Title-page dusty and with a little weakness in the paper, presumably from a removed book-plate on the blank part of verso. Last secion of leaves with some light worming to upper blank margin, far from affecting text. All in all a very nice and clean copy. Old owner's name to top of title-page. Title-page printed in red/black. (20), 1227,(9) pp. Scarce first edition of Pufendorf's magnum opus, one of the fundamental works of natural law. In this milestone work of political and legal thought, Pufendorf presents his system of universal law, which profoundly revised the natural law theories of Hobbes and Grotius. In his teaching, that the will of the state is but the sum of the individual wills that constitute it, he shows himself a precursor of Rousseau and of the "Social Contract"."It is a complete system of public, private and international law. Against Hobbes's view he contended that the state of nature was one of peace, not war, and heurged the view that international law. existed between all nations. [a work] of great importance" (David Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law)."In the 'De jure naturae et gentium' Pufendorf took up in great measure the theories of Grotius and sought to complete them by means of the doctrines of Hobbes and of his own ideas. His first important point was that natural law does not extend beyond the limits of this life and that it confines itself to regulating … [Click Below for Full Description]

BALDAEUS, Philippus.
1672 Baldaeus Dutch Voyage to INDIA Ceylon Sri Lanka Illustrated MAPS Bombay Goa Philippus Baldaeus was a 17th-century Dutch minister and voyager who is chiefly remembered for his voyage to Ceylon and his corresponding book reporting on his experience. This book was published in three distinct parts: description of coastal India, description of Ceylon itself, and a discussion on religions of India. The topographical descriptions in the first two sections describe towns, trade, people and influence of other countries on them. This book is often considered the most important source on the establishment of Dutch power in Ceylon and South India. Baldaeus also introduces aspects of the Tamil language by translating the Lord’s Prayer; however, the most desirable portion of this book is the fine illustrated plates, depicting cities of Amadabath, Fort Bombay, Goa, Cranganor, Cochin, Coulang, Goldconda, Negapatam, and Tutecorin, as well as native costumes, ceremonies, rituals, battle scenes, and elephant hunts! In Roma: Per Nicol Angelo Tinassi, MDCLXXII [1672]. In Roma: Per Nicolò Angelo Tinassi, MDCLXXII [1672]., 1672. 12mo (16 x 10.5 cm.): [24], 455, [1] pages (lacking frontispiece); bound in contemporary vellum, gilt morocco titling piece (some worming to foot of spine and last leaf). RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK DEVOTED ENTIRELY TO SURGICAL ANATOMY. This work, which reached a second edition in 1687, is highly creditable to the author, who appears to have studied intimately the mutual relations of different parts." (Encyclopaedia Britannica).
