ROHAULT, Jacques
1672. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Traité de Physique. Not after 1672, not before 1671. BOUND MANUSCRIPT of the Standard work of the time in physics, created not more than one year after publication of the first book edition. 546 numbered text pages plus 6 pages of content list. The text ist not a word-by-word copy of Rohault's Traité. Devided in 4 chapters, it contains about 70% of the text of the print edition. Since Rohault's textbook was widely used by students of the time, it is likely that the manuscript was created as a teaching aid. It is written in black ink in a neat and accurate hand and contains several illustrations which are also found in the printed version. Bound in contemporary calf, spine with gilt-lettered label, marbled endpapers, old (18th century?) rebacking and leather reinforcement of corners, some rubbing of boards and extremities, single wormhole in upper board. A torn portion of the second leaf of contents is repaired with little loss of text. The text pages are lightly browned with occasional minor spotting and faint dampstaining to first leaves only. The final text leaf is stained and somewhat frayed at fore-margin. Provenance: D. A. Lemaigre (signed and dated 1672 on last page of contents), another (illegible) signature to the final page. Very good condition. ---- The French physicist Rohault was born in Amiens in 1620 and died in Paris in 1675. "In 1671, Jacques Rohault published his Traité de physique, a textbook on physics relying on his weekly conferences held in Paris. A good ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOD, Thomas; MOHR, Georg; BEDWELL, William; STURM, Johannes.
London; Amsterdam: J. Windet and sold by S. Shorter; Jacob van Velsen for the author, [1598]; 1672. One of the most remarkable sammelbands from the Macclesfield library, containing the extremely rare first edition of the first published work on the 'sector', also called the 'geometrical compass' by Galileo who developed it independently in the late 1590s as an instrument for military engineering (although he did not publish an account of it until 1606). "Hood's sector was the first mechanical calculating device of general practical use to be published since the abacus of remote antiquity" (Stillman Drake, p. 17). "Although credit for the sector is often given to Galileo, it is clear that the instrument was well known and used in England before Galileo published his work on it" (Tomash & Williams, p. 1416). "The sector was one of the most familiar of mathematical instruments between the 17th and 19th centuries. It was however devised just before 1600 and was first published in 1598 by the English mathematical practitioner Thomas Hood. An independent version developed by Galileo Galilei in the 1590s was published early in the 17th century [1606], and many other designs subsequently followed" (mhc.ox.ac.uk). OCLC lists no copies in North America, but we have located one (Folger), though it lacks the plates (present in this copy); ABPC/RBH list three copies (including Horblit and Kenney), all lacking the plates. Also included in this volume are three geometrical works by the Danish mathematician Georg Mohr that are so rare that they were thought to be lost until a copy of one o … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WALDENSIANS].
Bibliografia Valdese 1672; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Pamfletten 5035; WorldCat (3 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare copy of a pamphlet on the massacre of the Waldensians in Piedmont in 1655. It is probably a second edition as the title-pages mentions: "Jouxte la copie impriméé à Haerlem 1663", though no copies from this previous Haarlem edition are known. The Waldensians are a Christian movement with its origins in the later Middle Ages in France and they were persecuted as heretics from the 12th century onwards. From the early 17th century they were considered as early forerunners of the Reformation. In 1655 the Duke of Savoy commanded the Waldensians of Piedmont to attend Mass or leave in 20 days. The remaining Waldensians were massacred, causing indignation throughout Europe. Some waterstains in the upper margins; wrappers with slightly rubbed edges and spine restored with cello tape. Otherwise a good copy of this rare pamphlet on the Piedmont massacre.

Ercker, Lazarus.
Frankfurt, Johann David Zunner, 1672-1673 1672-1673. Two parts in one volume, small folio (315x195 mm). Each part has its own title. [12], 332, [4]; [4], 47 pp. Engraved title by P. Rilian (dated 1673), 41 large woodcut illustrations. Bound in old vellum from an antiphonal, evenly browned throughout, final leaf partially detached. Rare first edition of the enlarged edition of Ercker?s Beschreibung. The 41 wood-engraved plates, half or nearly full-page, show chemical apparatus and processes, furnaces, and mines. ?Ercker, along with Agricola and Biringuccio, was the chief spokesman in printed form for most of the metallurgical knowledge of the sixteenth century and his includence on later assaying literature was enourmous. Working as chief inspector of the mines in Bohemia under Emperor Rudolf ii, he systematically reviewed the methods of testing alloys and minerals, supervised smelting operations, and wrote with extraordinary clarify of the apparatus and operations involved? (Hoover Collection 283). ?Considering the importance of Ercker?s treatise it is remarkable how little is on record about him [?] His book was highly prized at the time, for it was a record of practical experience, and was not burdened with theories and hypotheses. The first edition was printed by Georg Schwartz at Prague, 1574, in folio. The work was enlarged and entitled Aula Subterranea, and published in 1672? (Ferguson). Dibner called Ercker?s works second only to Agricola?s in the ?beauty of the graphic treatment of the crafts? The second part contains the Interpres phraseologiae metallurgicae. HOOGHE, Romeyn de.
1672. Knuttel 10703; Landwehr, De Hooghe Etcher, p. 66; Muller, Historieplaten 2445a. Broadsheet concerning the siege and recapturing on 30 December 1672 of the city Coevorden. In July 1672, the garrisons of Christoph Bernhard von Galen (1606-1678), bishop of Münster, had sieged and captured the city. As his troops sacked the city, many inhabitants left for Groningen and surrounding towns. Among them a teacher, Mijndert van der Thijnen, who went to the lieutenant-general Carl von Rabenhaupt (1602-1675), commander of Groningen, and requested the retake of Coevorden. Van der Thijnen drew a map of the city which showed Von Rabenhaupt how to successfully siege the city. In December Von Rabenhaupt left for Coevorden, and recaptured the city within an hour. The text gives a brief description of the siege, and ends with a small overview of the prisoners and loot they took. The engraved illustration, showing the siege of Coevorden, is engraved by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), the most significant and prolific printmaker of the late Dutch Golden Age. His work displays the political grandeur and disasters of war in the Dutch Republic, including the disastrous year 1672, depicted dramatically and with great splendour. Margins thumbed and slightly smudged, some faint folding lines and a small marginal chip on the major folding line. With four small adhesive pieces on the back. A very good copy.

FRANZINI, Girolamo
In Roma, per il sue. 1672. 1672 Marvelous Antiquities of ROME Franzini Illustrated Colossus of Rhodes RUINS Girolamo Franzini was a 16th-century Italian historian known for his accounts of the antiquities of Rome. In 1588, Pope Sixtus V announced the first of four special holy years in Rome and was thus the destination for many travelers. Franzini published a work that would help those arriving in Rome to understand the antiquities of the city. First published, oddly, in Venice the same year, ‘The Marvelous Things of the city of Rome’ became one of several works to explore the antiquities of Rome during that time. However, Franzini featured the work of Andrea Palladio whose ‘Antiquity of Rome’ included engravings that enriched the first and all subsequent editions of Franzini’s work. According to Brach, the illustrations in this work were constantly used to illustrated travel guides of Rome for over 150 years! ‘Marvelous Things’ was the first true city guide of Rome. It would undergo numerous editions and edits until the end of the 17th-century. This 1672 edition was published in Rome and features the 50 incredible woodcuts that were first seen in the 16th-century versions. These illustrations depict ancient ruins, temples, mythological figures, and a fascinating illustration of the Colossus of Rhodes! An impressive work! Grew, Nehemiah
London: Printed for Spencer Hickman, 1672. First Edition. Contemporary calf binding with later red morocco spine label, handsomely rebacked. Octavo measuring 90 x 160 mm (pages). Collates: (32), 186 (mispaginated 198 as reported by ESTC), (22) pages with 3 folding engraved plates at rear: complete, including the rare license leaf before the title. Internally an exceptionally clean copy, and noticeably larger than other copies that have recently come to market. A forefather in the field of plant anatomy, Grew was the first to explore how plants develop organs and tissues, and in what ways they reproduce. His work The Anatomy of Vegetables was a particular point of pride, and soon after its release he presented four copies to the Royal Society; and it resulted in his election as a fellow in 1673. Considered an important botanical work that "proclaimed new truths or hypotheses in science" (Dibner), Grew himself seemed to understand that he was breaking entirely new ground. "Of what antiquity the Anatomy of Animals is, and how great have been its Improvements of later years is well known. That of Vegetables is a subject matter which from all ages to this day hath not only lain uncultivated; but for ought I know, except some observations from our country-men, hath not been so much as thought upon." Grew's text sets out as a corrective, and from it has sprung a diverse and important field of scientific inquiry. ESTC R30321. Wing G1946. Welcome III 164. Dibner Heralds of Science 21.

A few small scuffs to binding; six folding plates with old repairs to tears crossing images, a very occasional pale dampstain at end. Provenance: pale indistinct inkstamp on title; purchased from Paul and Marianne Gourary, 1964. FIRST EDITION: "the best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection" (Hofer). Celebrating Ferdinand III's (1199-1252) canonization by Pope Clement X, the work was commissioned by the Cathedral of Seville, and the text written by the poet, chronicler and translator Fernando de la Torre Farfán. Illustrating his text and documenting the elaborate festivities were the best Seville artists of the age. The 1671 procession followed the Corpus Christi model, with bell-ringing, fireworks, and lavish street adornment. "The volume is interesting not only as a curious piece of local history, but as being illustrated wholly by artists of Seville. (5f). [Click Below for Full Description]

Cords showing at front hinge, but still tight. Slight spotting to margins of title-page and some scattered brownspotting (not heavy). Overall a fine, unrestored copy with wide margins. Genga's milestone work founded the discipline of anatomical surgery; it was frequently reprinted and remained a widely used manual for decades after its first appearance. Genga furthermore, in the tract appended to this work (i.e the "Breve Discorso" on the circulation of the blood, pp. 420-448), showed himself to be one of the first Italians to accept Harvey's theory on the circulation of blood. "Though anatomy was hitherto cultivated with much success as illustrating the natural history and morbid states of the human body, yet little had been done for the elucidation of local diseases, and the surgical means by which they may have been successfully treated. The idea of applying anatomical knowledge directly to this purpose appears to have originated with Barnardin Genga, a Roman surgeon, who published in 1672, at Rome, a work entitled "Surgical Anatomy, or the Anatomical History of the Bones and Muscles of the Human Body, with the description of the Blood-vessels". This work, which … [Click Below for Full Description]
