Tabelle Leder d. Zt. - Brunet III, 668; Graesse IV, 22; De Backer I, 430,24. - "Kircher's handbook of the virtues proper to a prince; it is also an encomium of Honoratus Joannius, who, according to Kircher embodied those virtues. The Archetypon politicum is interesting not so much for its content - the history is unreliable - as for its noble and lucid style. Appended to the wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

VILLANOVA (Arnaldo de) ].
Paris, Billaine, 1672. Fort volume in-8. 24ff. 828pp. 11ff. Vicaire, 316. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Isaac Newton
Philosophic Transactions of the Royal Society, London, 1672. Isaac Newton's first scientific publication containing his oft-cited demonstration using prisms that white light is a mixture of many colors. This famous publication is often referred to as the first modern "scientific paper," and the template for all that have followed since. Newton's milestone book on light, the "Opticks" of 1704, sprung from such early researches conducted just after his student tenure at Cambridge in 1664/65. The publication offered, here, was the scientific world's first introduction to the then unknown genius residing at Cambridge University. Soon to come was his equally famous paper in the Philosophic Transactions on his invention of the reflecting telescope. These two papers made Newton famous in scientific circles virtually overnight, and the rest is history. 4to, pp.14 (comprising pp.3075-3087) with two woodcut illustrations; extracted from Vol. VI of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for 1671/72. Neatly stitched in marbled wrappers and in very good condition throughout. Very nice and important. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

PRINTING & THE MIND OF MAN 153. "Spinoza's thought, a fusion of Cartesian rationalism and Hebraic tradition in which he grew up, is a solitary but crystal-clear exposition of the theory of natural right. He defends with eloquence the liberty of thought and speech in speculative matters, and 'Tractatus' contains the first clear statement of the independence of each other of philosophy and religion, in that speculation and precepts of conduct cannot collide." The first edition published 1670, and the third and fourth appeared posthumously in 1677. By trade Spinoza was a gifted lens grinder, after his death the lenses found in his cabinet fetched a high price. Owner inscription front cover pastedown dated 1729. ROHAULT, Jacques
1672. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Traité de Physique. Not after 1672, not before 1671. BOUND MANUSCRIPT of the Standard work of the time in physics, created not more than one year after publication of the first book edition. 546 numbered text pages plus 6 pages of content list. The text ist not a word-by-word copy of Rohault's Traité. Devided in 4 chapters, it contains about 70% of the text of the print edition. Since Rohault's textbook was widely used by students of the time, it is likely that the manuscript was created as a teaching aid. It is written in black ink in a neat and accurate hand and contains several illustrations which are also found in the printed version. Bound in contemporary calf, spine with gilt-lettered label, marbled endpapers, old (18th century?) rebacking and leather reinforcement of corners, some rubbing of boards and extremities, single wormhole in upper board. A torn portion of the second leaf of contents is repaired with little loss of text. The text pages are lightly browned with occasional minor spotting and faint dampstaining to first leaves only. The final text leaf is stained and somewhat frayed at fore-margin. Provenance: D. A. Lemaigre (signed and dated 1672 on last page of contents), another (illegible) signature to the final page. Very good condition. ---- The French physicist Rohault was born in Amiens in 1620 and died in Paris in 1675. HOOD, Thomas; MOHR, Georg; BEDWELL, William; STURM, Johannes.
London; Amsterdam: J. Windet and sold by S. Shorter; Jacob van Velsen for the author, [1598]; 1672. First edition. One of the most remarkable sammelbands from the Macclesfield library, containing the extremely rare first edition of the first published work on the 'sector', also called the 'geometrical compass' by Galileo who developed it independently in the late 1590s as an instrument for military engineering (although he did not publish an account of it until 1606). "Hood's sector was the first mechanical calculating device of general practical use to be published since the abacus of remote antiquity" (Stillman Drake, p. 17). "Although credit for the sector is often given to Galileo, it is clear that the instrument was well known and used in England before Galileo published his work on it" (Tomash & Williams, p. 1416). "The sector was one of the most familiar of mathematical instruments between the 17th and 19th centuries. It was however devised just before 1600 and was first published in 1598 by the English mathematical practitioner Thomas Hood. An independent version developed by Galileo Galilei in the 1590s was published early in the 17th century [1606], and many other designs subsequently followed" (mhc.ox.ac.uk). OCLC lists no copies in North America, but we have located one (Folger), though it lacks the plates (present in this copy); ABPC/RBH list three copies (including Horblit and Kenney), all lacking the plates. Also included in this volume are three geometrical works by the Danish mathematician Georg Mohr that are so rare that they were thought to be lost until … [Click Below for Full Description]

Born and raised in Damascus, he died at his monastery, Mar Saba, near Jerusalem. Barlaam and Josaphat (Latin: Barlamus et Iosaphatus) are two legendary Christian martyrs and saints, their story probably based ultimately on the life of the Buddha. It tells how an Indian king persecuted the Christian Church in his realm. When astrologers predicted that his own son would someday become a Christian, the king imprisoned the young prince Josaphat, who nevertheless met the hermit Saint Barlaam and converted to Christianity. [WALDENSIANS].
Bibliografia Valdese 1672; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Pamfletten 5035; WorldCat (3 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare copy of a pamphlet on the massacre of the Waldensians in Piedmont in 1655. It is probably a second edition as the title-pages mentions: "Jouxte la copie impriméé à Haerlem 1663", though no copies from this previous Haarlem edition are known. The Waldensians are a Christian movement with its origins in the later Middle Ages in France and they were persecuted as heretics from the 12th century onwards. From the early 17th century they were considered as early forerunners of the Reformation. In 1655 the Duke of Savoy commanded the Waldensians of Piedmont to attend Mass or leave in 20 days. The remaining Waldensians were massacred, causing indignation throughout Europe. Some waterstains in the upper margins; wrappers with slightly rubbed edges and spine restored with cello tape. Otherwise a good copy of this rare pamphlet on the Piedmont massacre.
