Enstaka småfläckar, lagad reva blad Dd2. Brea fina marginaler. Collijn sp. 9. Schück III, s. 228ff. Almqvist s. 132 & s. 45ff.

RHYNE, Willem ten
Leiden, apud Johannem Schuylenburgh 1672.. 12mo, [24], 387,[29] p., with the blank leaves S5-6, engraved title and a folding plate by the author, contemporary vellum, a fine copy. Hoffmann II, 309. Willem ten Rhyne (1647-1700), a Dutchman, qualified as M.D. at Angers in 1670, published this book, took a post as physician to the Dutch East India Company, and spent most of the rest of his life in Java. While in Japan he met with acupuncture, the first man with a Western medical training to do so. He wrote the first study of it to be printed, and published other pioneering works, on tea, Hottentots and similar subjects. His books are all scarce, this one particularly so: COPAC records BL copy and 3 in Scotland; OCLC 3 in Holland, none in U.S.A. He had of course written it before he went to the East, but it seems likely that this very detailed study of On Ancient Medicine, one of the oldest and most interesting parts of the Hippocratic corpus, with its theories of the balance of humours in the body, seemed relevant in his confrontation with Japanese medicine: the relation between the two appears to be virgin academic territory. Our collation agrees with that of Leiden Univ., except that we have the blank leaves they guess at; the pagination given by Vrije Univ. Amsterdam appears to include these blank pages. 21vf
