Liber primus: De affectibus naturales hominis functiones laesas vel constituentibus, vel producentibus, vel consequentibus", first published one year before; cover all aspects of internal medicine. - - The title of the English abridged edition of 1675 translated by Rochard Gower was "A new idea of the practice of physic. The first book, of the diseases either constituting, producing, or following the natural functions of man not in health; wherein is containd, beside a new method in general, a vindication of the spleen and mother from fits attributed to them; as also a new discovery of intermitting fevers, the yellow jaundice, and other diseases, never before discovered; all cleard by anatomical experiments and chymical demonstrations, as also by their cures" - - Franciscus de le Boe Sylvius (1614-1672), professor of the practice of medicine of Leyden, was one of the foremost physicians of his time. In 1637, Sylvius, as he was called, is credited by Haller giving the first description of the lateral cerebral fissure which bears his name. Although the aqueduct from the third to the fourth ventricle had been previously noted, Sir Michael Foster says we owe to Sylvius the name of the aqueduct. Newton, I.
. London, John Martyn, 1672-1673. This is a collection of all original issues forming the true first edition of volume 7 of the "Philosophical Transactions" (issues 81-91), including a general title page for the entire volume. These issues comprise pages 3,999-5,172, plus an index and four foldout plates. Many figures in the text. Contemporary leather panels with a fine old style leather spine, hardly distinguishable from an original period binding.l One of the most important volumes of the "Philosophical Transactions". Isaac Newton published his famous theory of light and colours in volume 6 (no. 80) of the Transactions. It was a publication that shook the scientific world of that day, and is still considered one of the cornerstones of science. Naturally, a lively debate followed - staged partly in the "Philosophical Transactions" during the following year. His theory, which included the notion that white light was in fact a combination of colours, also explained chromatic abberation. Consequently, Newton turned his attention to telescopes and devised a new type of telescope that combined refraction with reflection. It is the first paper in this volume, which is the collection of original issues of the Transactions from 1672 and 1673, and thus a fascinating window to the period just after publication of Newton's theory of light. Apart from Newton's answers to his critics on his new theory of light, and some letters of his critics (the Jesuit Ignatius Pardies in particular used the Transactions to publish his critiques on Newton's theory), this volume contains several addit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Recently bound in vellum using a an old Hebrew manuscript with a few obvious repairs; interior very clean with the occasional phrase underlined in pencil. First edition of this wonderful treatise on natural philosophy based upon an occult interpretation of the seven days of creation. According to Thorndike, this work purports ?to derive new principles of medicine, chemistry, astronomy, astrology, botany, zoology, anthropology and other sciences from the most ancient Hebraic truth through the gates of intelligence revealed to Moses.? Steeb (fl. 1672 - 1680) was influenced by the works of Pythagoras, Paracelsus, and Kircher, and Pico della Mirandola, and borrowed elements of Kabbalic thought for his interpretation of the universe and its creation. The author?s interest in celestial spheres, the creation of the earth, and the synthesis of several branches of science, religion, and the occult necessitated the invention of an array of unusual pseudoscientific diagrams to elucidate the text of his ambitious treatise. These diagrams are mostly circular (with octagonal plate marks) and many of them incorporate beautiful celestial imagery into their programs in addition to Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and various astrological and alchemical symbols. One interesting observation is Steeb?s perspective on salt, which has played a role in alchemy as the physical ?body? which survives death to reinaugurate new life. He remarks that ?sal sit ultimum in corruptione, sed & primum … [Click Below for Full Description]

GENGA, BERNARDINO. - [THE FOUNDATION OF SURGICAL ANATOMY]
Rome, Nicoloò Angelo Tinassi, 1672. Small 8vo. Inserted into a lovely-custommade binding of old vellum, with later elegant gilding (supposedly commissioned by the previous owner Piergiergio Borio - "P.B." in gold to spine) . Gilt line-borders with gilt ornamentel cornerpieces and gilt centrepiece to boards. Gilt ornamentations and gilt title-label to spine. Ex libris to inside of front board. Early owner's names to title-page. Engraved frontispiece with barely visible re-enforcement to inner hinge and with some small ink spots. Some sections of leaves with a worm-tract to inner margin, touching a few letters here and there. Some occasional browning and brownspotting, but overall fine. Generally a nice copy. (26), 455, (1) pp. Engraved frontispiece.. The extremely rare first edition of the first book devoted entirely to surgical anatomy. Genga's milestone work founded the discipline of anatomical surgery; it was frequently reprinted and remained a widely used manual for decades after its first appearance. Genga furthermore, in the tract appended to this work (i.e the "Breve Discorso" on the circulation of the blood, pp. 420-448), showed himself to be one of the first Italians to accept Harvey's theory on the circulation of blood. "Though anatomy was hitherto cultivated with much success as illustrating the natural history and morbid states of the human body, yet little had been done for the elucidation of local diseases, and the surgical means by which they may have been successfully treated. The idea of applying anatomical knowledge directly to this purpose appears to have … [Click Below for Full Description]

1672. HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE ASHMOLE, Elias. The Institution, Laws & Ceremonies of the Noble Order of the Garter. [12], 720, [106] pp. Illustrated with a total of 54 engraved plates, including a full-page engraved portrait of Charles II, 15 double-spread engravings, 22 full-page engravings and 16 small engravings, most after Wenceslaus Hollar. Folio, 350 x 220 mm, bound in near-contemporary English speckled calf, spine with intricate gilt tooling and red leather title-label. London: J. Macock, 1672. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition. Ashmole's exhaustive treatise concerns all aspects of "The Most Noble Order of the Garter" the highest order of chivalry or knighthood in Great Britain. Founded in 1348, the Order is dedicated to the image and arms of Saint George, England's patron saint. 'After peerages it remains the pinnacle of the honours system in the United Kingdom. Membership in the order is limited to the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and no more than twenty-four members, or Companions; the order also comprises knights and ladies (e.g., members of the British Royal Family and foreign monarchs). Bestowing the honour has been described as one of the Monarch's few remaining truly personal, executive prerogatives.' Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) was hired by Ashmole to produce the illustrations for this lavish volume. Despite the fact that Ashmole's treatise "includes all available information on the Garter and much peripheral material on the Continental orders and ceremonies… without illustrations the book would be incomparably poorer, and Hollar's signed and unsigned w … [Click Below for Full Description]

[14], 362 [i.e. 374], [66], 269, [71], 48, [12] p.. 1672 Caballo (d. 1616) was a Florentine judge and legal writer who saw his "Resolutionum criminalium" achieve great acceptance upon publication in 1606 and as attested to by the several later editions in the 17th century. This dense work on criminal law begins with a title-page in red and black with type in a great variety of point sizes of roman and italic. The text is printed in double-column format and each "century" begins with a large woodcut headpiece and ends with a small woodcut tailpiece. This edition, "Hac quarta editione pluribus mendis expurgatae," has several very good indices of "arguments," words, and "things. Later limp, but rather stiff, vellum. Inkstains on bottom edge of closed volume; some captions a little shaved, half-title a little tattered. Remarkably solid and => clean.
