~~~~ ENGLISH ~~~~ The text of Virgil is revised by the Batavian scholar Nicolas Heinsius (1620-1681), preceded by a biographical note and illustrated with 101 anonymous full-page engravings and an engraved title page. We owe this meticulous work of edition to the printer and bookseller in Leiden, Franciscus Hackius, member to the Elsevier’s family. The illustrations of the song VI of the Aeneid particularly offer the most curious esoteric iconography, near the occult symbolism of the emblem books. Slight lack of leather on head, a few "ghost" prints of engravings on facing text, good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LA MOTTE, Antoine Houdar de.
Cioranescu 36530; Cohen-De Ricci, p. 594 ("Très belle édition, rare et recherchée"); Fabula Docet 94; Fürstenberg 74; Lewine 289; Populus, Gillot Cat, 31-98; Sander 1095. First edition of a famous French fable book, beautifully illustrated by the most famous artists of the day. The book contains 100 fables by Antoine Houdar de La Motte (1672-1731), modelled after the fables by Jean de La Fontaine, the most important French fable author ever. Of special interest is La Motte-Houdart's introductory essay on the genre of the fable, setting out rules to be followed, based on the classical ideals of true likeness, unity and proper arrangement. He intends to rival both Aesop and La Fontaine. The book at the same time represents a milestone in French book illustration, introducing Rococo miniatures or vignettes, including 62 by the interior and costume designer Claude Gillon, one of his few works as a book-illustrator. The "Actor's fable" is dedicated to him.Binding rubbed with a few small defects; some slight staining and thumbing. Very good copy.

[ISLE OF PINES] ANONYMOUS
N.d.: n.p., 1672. Square octavo, 8 pp., paper browned, but very good; bound in modern boards with red spine, bookplate, ink title on front and spine. A degree south of the Isle of Pines. A rare and important seventeenth-century Dutch work about the imaginary land of "Mallanbruino" which, it is claimed, lies just to the south of Henry Neville's famous Isle of Pines. The title of this intriguing work literally translates as "Story of the remarkable turmoil, which occurred in the province of Mallanbruino, which lays a degree south of the Island of Pines, and how it was suppressed". The significant detail is that in Neville's story the small but fertile Isle of Pines is famously 'near to the Coast of Terra Australis, Incognita', suggesting that the author of this Dutch story set his story not only in the same region, but perhaps even on the fabled mainland itself: Mallanbruino thus becomes a little-known, and all but unregarded example of seventeenth-century Dutch Australiana. Neville's work was first published in 1668 and appeared in Dutch translation soon thereafter. The Isle of Pines was a sensation, not least because of its licentious depiction of the hero of the tale, George Pine, sleeping with all four of the women with whom he was stranded. This short piece capitalised on its success, and takes the form of a dialogue in which a bored Dutch soldier on guard duty named Gijsbert tells his colleagues of the two years he spent in the imaginary province, and of the ideal society he found there. His friends are initially sceptical, but as he sketches in more … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WALDENSIANS].
Bibliografia Valdese 1672; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Pamfletten 5035; WorldCat (3 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare copy of this pamphlet on the massacre of the Waldensians in Piedmont in 1655. It is probably a second edition as the title-pages mentions: "Jouxte la copie impriméé à Haerlem 1663", though no copies from this previous Haarlem edition are known. The Waldensians are a Christian movement with its origins in the later Middle Ages in France and they were persecuted as heretics from the 12th century onwards. From the early 17th century they were considered as early forerunners of the Reformation. In 1655 the Duke of Savoy commanded the Waldensians of Piedmont to attend Mass or leave in 20 days. The remaining Waldensians were massacred, causing indignation throughout Europe. Some waterstains in the upper margins; wrappers with slightly rubbed edges and spine restored with cello tape. Otherwise a good copy of this rare pamphlet on the Piedmont massacre.

First Edition, Oxford Issue of one of the foundation works of neurology. Willis's anatomical and clinical study On the soul of brutes is based upon the matured version of his theory of the soul, a refutation of Cartesian theory. Unlike Descartes, Willis believed that man has two souls, an immortal and uniquely human rational soul, and a mortal animal soul shared by all members of the animal kingdom. In his discussion of the sensitive soul Willis recapitulated the neurological concepts he had introduced in Cerebri anatome, particularly localization, and extended them to invertebrates with some of the first detailed dissections made of the oyster, earthworm and lobster. He attributed a wide range of diseases to neurological disturbances, among them headache, lethargy, melancholy, apoplexy, frenzy and paralysis, but recognized the difference between the symptoms of organic brain disease from those of mental illness, which he attributed to disordered animal spirits. He gave what is probably the first account of general paralysis of the insane (Pa … [Click Below for Full Description]

(10),198;132 (=232);188,(11) pp.First edition.- The book by Filippus Baelde (1632-1672) is divided into three parts: the first is a description of coastal India, the second treats Ceylon, and the third is a discussion of Indian religion. In the first two parts he describes the towns, their trade, the surrounding countryside, and the people, and he devotes a large amount of space and much detail to the rise of Portuguese power in the various parts of India and to the later Dutch conquest of many of those places. In part two, for example, he uses about 150 pages to tell the story of the Portuguese conquest of Ceylon, Portuguese relations with the king of Kandy, Dutch negotiations with Kandy beginning with Spilbergen's visit in 1602, the Dutch conquest of Portuguese Ceylon, the VOC's continued difficulties with Kandy, the problems of governing Ceylon, and the attempts to reform the church there. Baldaeus' description of Hindu religion in part three depends heavily on Abraham Roger's work but also contains new information gained from his own observations' (Lach, Asia in the making of Europe, I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden (Lugduni Batavorum), Apud Arnoldum Doude, 1672.. Quart.
