Kircher, Athanasius:
Amsterdam, Jansson van Waesberge, 1672. 4°, circa 24,5 x 19,5 cm., Kupfertitel, 7 Bll., 235 SS., 2 gestochene Portraits., 14 Kupfertafeln und doppelblattgr. Tabelle. Leder d. Zt. Brunet III, 668; Graesse IV, 22; De Backer I, 430,24. ? (Englmann, Sphärenharmonie und Mikrokosmus, 144). Englmann weist im weiteren Verlauf ihrer überzeugenden Argumentation dann diesen zweiten Teil Filippo Bonanni zu. - ?Kircher's handbook of the virtues proper to a prince; it is also an encomium of Honoratus Joannius, who, according to Kircher embodied those virtues. The Archetypon politicum is interesting not so much for its content - the history is unreliable - as for its noble and lucid style. Appended to the work are various poems in praise of Honoratus, composed in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Arabic, Aramaic, Samaritan, and Coptic - an impressive display of Kircher's virtuosity as a linguist" (Merrill … [Click Below for Full Description]

HESSEL van EST Willem (ESTIUS Guilielmus - ESTIO Guglielmo)
Parigi Parisiis, Sumptibus Edmundi Couterot, Caroli Angot, Michaelis Le Petit, Jacobi Piget via Jacobaea Cum Approbatione Doctorum, & Privilegio Regis, 1672. Guglielmo (nederl. L'opera è suddivisa in quattro libri. [8] leaves (including engraved title), 244 pp., [3] leavwes of index and errata. Printed in two columns. Contemporary vellum, gilt title on spine. [Click Below for Full Description]

His Majesty doth further Declare, That he will proceed with all Severity, against all manner of persons who shall use any bold or unlawful Speeches of this nature, or be present at any Coffee-house, or other publick or private meeting where such Speeches are used...." It includes two tables of statutes. The first is chronological, the second is digested by topic. It omits statutes before the time of Edward III because they "are but declaratory and affirmative of the Common Law (as my Lord Cook has observed) and may now by their Antiquity and uninterrupted usage be said to be incorporated into the body of the Common Law, with which the treatise medleth not" (iii). VAENIUS, Otto (Otto van VEEN).
Landwehr, Romanic emblem books, 479; Praz, pp. 402-403 & 523-524. Attractive copy of a splendidly illustrated edition combining Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata and Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs, tiree de la philosophie des Stoiques... .. The emblems in the work of De Gomberville had been made by Pierre Daret after Vaenius's emblems, only enlarged and slightly improved upon after the latest fashion. The Brussels publisher had probably acquired Daret's plates, and used them again in the present edition, giving back the authorship to Vaenius, while also retaining De Gomberville's instructive comments. In this perfect combination of Vaenius' educational emblems and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on stoic philosophers and explained for the instruction of youth, the quotations from Horace made into emblems became popular again. With the bookplate of Six van Hillegom on pastedown, and bookplate of Mr. Raye De Breukelerwaert on blank flyleaf. Slightly browned with some marginal thumbing. In very good condition.
