Rycaut, Paul.
Venice, Combi & La Noù, 1672. - 4to. (14), 296 pp. With engr., illustrated title, woodcut printer's device to printed title page, and 21 engravings in the text, mostly half-page. Contemp. vellum. First Italian edition of Sir Paul Rycaut‘s famous Turkish chronicle, "The Present State of the Ottoman Empire", first published in 1668 and drawn from various authentic sources and from the author‘s own observations. "His most important work [.] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer, 2nd ed. only). Constantino Belli's version is probably based on the 1670 French translation by Pierre Briot. The attractive engravings by Suor Isabella Piccini depict dignitaries and persons of various ranks in their costumes, as well as the illustration of a turban, specially mentioned by Atabey. - Covers slightly warped. Library label to pastedown; half-title stamped "Graf Segur". A good, very clean copy from the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. BL-STC (17th-century Italian) 806. Atabey 1070. Graesse VI/1, 108. Cf. Blackmer 1464 (2nd ed). Weber II, 333f. Hiler 770 (1686 English ed.). [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

HERBERT OF CHERBURY, Edward, Lord
London: Printed by Andrew Clark 1672, 1672. 4to. (290x180mm). pp. [vi], 639, [16, index]. Frontis. portrait of Henry VIII. Title page in black and red. Full calf, contemporary boards with double-lined border in blind. Rebacked, five raised bands, six compartments with gilt decoration, maroon label to second compartment with title and author in gilt. Some scuffing and wear to the boards with a loss at corners of lower cover. Wear to the head and foot of the spine. The contents are very good but with some foxing and a tear to the lower corner of leaf Kk2 (no loss of text). Front pastedown has the armorial bookplate of Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse, Bart. of Bedale, Yorkshire. Above it is the ownership inscription: "Henry Marwood, 1675", who may be Sir Henry Marwood, 2nd Bt. (c.1635-1725), of Little Busby, Stokesley, Yorkshire. A nice copy. This Life of Henry VIII was commissioned by Charles I in the 1630s as he proceeded with controversial anti-Calvinist religious reforms in the face of Puritan opposition and suspicion that he was a closet Catholic. Lord Herbert of Cherbury's was, himself, committed to the eradication of religious conflict and in accepting the King's invitation he probably felt that his book would provide a platform for the publication of his own views on religion and religious authority. This substantial work is therefore an important source, not just for the Stuart view of the most celebrated Tudor monarch, but also for that Anglican eirenicism which was a defining feature of the English church in the 1620s and 30s. Cfr. Piantanida 3773; Lozzi 2665; Argelati II, 205. Ottimo esemplare.

Brunet IV, 1488. [Attributes: First Edition]

[IMAGINARY VOYAGE].
Knuttel 10600; M. Reinders, Printed pandemonium, pp. 195-199; not in Ford; Gove; Scheckter. First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his (fictitious) voyage and several years residence on a (fictitious) utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino, the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince, who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system, bringing peace and happiness to the island. The three men conclude that the Dutch Republic should introduce such a system. Some spots and a small restoration to the extremities of the title-page, otherwise in good condition. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines.

Separate title page for De Arte Cabalistica. "The De arte cabalistica is the first full treatise on Cabala by a non-Jew . . . It was the fullest exposition hitherto available to European scholars, outside the actual Jewish tradition, of Cabalist theory and practice, with examination of Hebrew letter-manipulations and other Cabalist theories and techniques. Reuchlin devotes much attention to the Names, and particularly to the Name of Jesus as that of the Messiah. The De arte cabalistica was to become the Bible of the Christian Cabalists." - Frances Yates, Giordano Bruno & the Hermetic Tradition.
