Rotgans, Lucas
1672. 4º: *-5* 4 A-Y 4; * 2 A-Z 4, gepag. Contemporain perkament, goed exemplaar. [Click Below for Full Description]

HERBERT OF CHERBURY, Edward, Lord
London: Printed by Andrew Clark 1672, 1672. 4to. (290x180mm). pp. [vi], 639, [16, index]. Frontis. portrait of Henry VIII. Title page in black and red. Full calf, contemporary boards with double-lined border in blind. Rebacked, five raised bands, six compartments with gilt decoration, maroon label to second compartment with title and author in gilt. Some scuffing and wear to the boards with a loss at corners of lower cover. Wear to the head and foot of the spine. The contents are very good but with some foxing and a tear to the lower corner of leaf Kk2 (no loss of text). Front pastedown has the armorial bookplate of Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse, Bart. of Bedale, Yorkshire. Above it is the ownership inscription: "Henry Marwood, 1675", who may be Sir Henry Marwood, 2nd Bt. (c.1635-1725), of Little Busby, Stokesley, Yorkshire. A nice copy. This Life of Henry VIII was commissioned by Charles I in the 1630s as he proceeded with controversial anti-Calvinist religious reforms in the face of Puritan opposition and suspicion that he was a closet Catholic. Lord Herbert of Cherbury's was, himself, committed to the eradication of religious conflict and in accepting the King's invitation he probably felt that his book would provide a platform for the publication of his own views on religion and religious authority. This substantial work is therefore an important source, not just for the Stuart view of the most celebrated Tudor monarch, but also for that Anglican eirenicism which was a defining feature of the English church in the 1620s and 30s.
Brunet IV, 1488. [Attributes: First Edition]

[IMAGINARY VOYAGE].
Knuttel 10600; M. Reinders, Printed pandemonium, pp. 195-199; not in Ford; Gove; Scheckter. First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his (fictitious) voyage and several years residence on a (fictitious) utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino, the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince, who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system, bringing peace and happiness to the island. The three men conclude that the Dutch Republic should introduce such a system. Some spots and a small restoration to the extremities of the title-page, otherwise in good condition. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines.

Grew, Nehemiah
First edition of the founding text of scientific botany. Author Nehemiah Grew began his career as a physician but soon developed an interest in plant anatomy, in part because the subject had not yet been rigorously investigated. "Grew was a conscious pioneer in a hitherto neglected area... His work was primarily marked by his brilliant observation and description of plants and their component parts; having begun by making observations using only the naked eye, Grew supplemented these with the use of a microscope under the tutelage of his colleague Hooke. His presentations to the society began in 1672-4 with the roots, branches, and trunks of plants, proceeding thereafter to their leaves, flowers, fruit, and seeds. He was also an innovator in the terminology he used to describe plants, first using such terms as 'radicle' or 'parenchyma', a word adapted from its use in animal anatomy by Francis Glisson. Grew was primarily interested in the morphology and taxonomy of plants, but this led him to study plant physiology; he thus considered how buds grew, how seeds developed, and other related topics. He also recognized the sexual nature of plant reproduction, though, with characteristic modesty, he acknowledged tha … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRUNNEMANN, Johannes,
sumptibus Johannis Christophori Tarnovii, Leipzig (= Lipsiae) 1672 - Editio post claudicantem & mendosam Gallicanam tertia. Leipzig (= Lipsiae), sumptibus Johannis Christophori Tarnovii, 1672. Fol. Tb. in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, mit Kupferallegorie, 9 nn. Bll., 1360 S., (Index:) 83 Bll. Zeitgenössischer blindgeprägter Schweinslederband auf 5 Bünden geheftet. (Exlibris und kl. St.a. T.). [Click Below for Full Description]
