KIRCHMANN, Johann [& Romeyn de Hooghe]
Bound in contemporary dark-brown calf. Spine expertly and recently rebacked in six compartments with title, filigrees, and fillets in gold. Edges and corners bumped. Some marginal fraying; text unaffected. Engraved title, plates 1 and 2 in excellent condition; plates 3 and 4 with fold starting. Otherwise an excellent, crisp copy with undiminished margins.A comprehensive and seminal study of the funeral practices and sepulchral accoutrements of the Romans, including embalming, inhumation, cremation, memorials, and mourning. The study prints epitaphic inscriptions in quasi-facsimile and quotes descriptions of funeral rites appearing in classical literature. Kirchmann thus treats his subject ('The Funerals of the Romans') in exacting detail over nearly 700 pages. First published in Hamburg by George Ludwig Froben in 1605, the book was frequently reprinted (always in small formats), finding an eager audience across the continent as well as in England (Kirchmann was cited approvingly by English antiquary John Weever in his study, English Funeral Monuments, published in 1631).Johann Kirchmann (1575-1643) was a German philologist, librarian, antiquary, and pedagogue. Trained at the Universities of Rostock, Frankfurt, Jena, Strasbourg, and Altdorf, Kirchmann became Professor of Classical Literature (Poetry) at the University of Rostock in 1603. From 1613 until his death in 1643, he was a rector at Lübeck. Kirchmann worked at the center of a wide correspondence network, which connected him with both continental and English humanists and antiquaries. Kirchmann seems to have spec … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rycaut, Paul.
Venice, Combi & La Noù, 1672. - 4to. (14), 296 pp. With engr., illustrated title, woodcut printer's device to printed title page, and 21 engravings in the text, mostly half-page. Contemp. vellum. First Italian edition of Sir Paul Rycaut‘s famous Turkish chronicle, "The Present State of the Ottoman Empire", first published in 1668 and drawn from various authentic sources and from the author‘s own observations. "His most important work [.] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer, 2nd ed. only). Constantino Belli's version is probably based on the 1670 French translation by Pierre Briot. The attractive engravings by Suor Isabella Piccini depict dignitaries and persons of various ranks in their costumes, as well as the illustration of a turban, specially mentioned by Atabey. - Covers slightly warped. Library label to pastedown; half-title stamped "Graf Segur". A good, very clean copy from the Ottoman collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. BL-STC (17th-century Italian) 806. Atabey 1070. Graesse VI/1, 108. Cf. Blackmer 1464 (2nd ed). Weber II, 333f. Hiler 770 (1686 English ed.). [Attributes: First Edition]

Contemporain perkament, goed exemplaar. [Click Below for Full Description]
