BEURAIN, JEAN [DE]
1672. Paris: De Beaurain, 1782. [1], VIII, 217, [1] pagine. 39x27 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

Constantijn Huygens (4 September 1596 - 28 March 1687), was a Dutch Golden Age diplomate, scholar, architect, poet and composer. As a poet he ranks among the very best the Dutch Golden Age has produced. He was secretary to two Princes of Orange: Frederick Henry and William II, and the father of the scientist Christiaan Huygens. He is often considered a member of what is known as the Muiderkring, a group of leading intellectuals gathered around the poet Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, who met regularly at the castle of Muiden near Amsterdam. Aside from his membership in the Muiderkring (which was not as formerly supposed, an official club), at the start of the 1630s he was also in touch with René Descartes, with Rembrandt, and the painter Jan Lievens. He became friends with John Donne, and translated his poems into Dutch. - Copy from the library of B. MORHOF, Daniel Georg
Kiel: Joachim Reuman, 1672. FIRST EDITION. Title with woodcut device. Disbound; with slight browning, but generally an excellent copy. First edition of this unusual letter from Morhof to medical colleague Johann Daniel Major, recounting how an Amsterdam wine merchant had figured out how to break glasses with his voice. Morhof (1639-91) was a professor at both Rostock and Kiel, a librarian, and a member of the Royal Society. The author cites the earlier acoustic works of Boyle, Descartes, Kircher and more, including Daniel Bartoli, Rector of the Jesuit College of Rome, who is noted for providing the earliest modern exposition on the physics of sound. While Bartoli (1608-85) is generally credited as the first to mention the shattering of glass at certain pitches in his Del svono de 'tremori armonici of 1680, Morhof's original research at Kiel predates this by at least eight years. "He was devoted to modern research, and placed his enormous learning at the service of factual knowledge." In addition, he is also remembered for his numerous alchemical and chemical writings. Major (1634-88) was the first to successfully inject drugs intravenously in humans (see G & M, 1963). This letter was reprinted into the eighteenth century.

Blome, Richard
London: Printed by T. Milbourn, and sold by the book-sellers of London, and Westminster, 1672. [8],192pp. plus three folding maps. 12mo. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, gilt leather label. Text lightly foxed. Small closed tear in largest map, neatly repaired. Very good. Rare early work on Jamaica and the other American and British Caribbean colonies, published by British mapmaker and bookseller Richard Blome. Three issues are indicated by ESTC, each with minor variations in the imprint. Blome added to the sparse knowledge of the times, fully describing the products, resources, and natives of British America. To do this he relied heavily on the notes of then Governor of Jamaica Thomas Lynch and the summaries of explorations described in Lederer's DISCOVERIES (1672). Lederer's is a firsthand account of the explorations through Virginia, the Carolinas, and other American possessions, considered the first scientific report on those regions. The three rare folding maps are "A New & Exact Mapp of y. Isle of Jamaica" engraved by Wenceslas Hollar, who had worked on Blome's great atlas, A GEOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FOUR PARTS OF THE WORLD (1670); "A Generall Mapp of Carolina, Describing Its Sea, Coast and Rivers," derived from the famous Horne map of 1666; and "A Draught of the Sea Coast and Rivers, of Virginia, Maryland, and New England," with an inset of Newfoundland. He was impressed with the idea that life was a slow-burning flame, and he often pointed out the analogy between living processes and the burning of a candle. It was in the present tract, however that he gave special attention to the theme, insisting upon the term flamma vitalis (pp.105 et seq). In many places he approached the modern theory of oxidation" [Fulton]. While the book was in the press Boyle as an afterthought decided to add more material. This was to be be inserted in middle of sheets already printed and this has resulted in an interrupted sequence of gatherings with almost 200 pages introduced between leaves K1 and K2 and with the gathering x (the last of the of extra material) coming long before gathering P, the last gathering of the book proper. The book was reissued in 1673 with a cancelled title page dated for that year.

GUERICKE, Otto von.
Amsterdam: Johanned Jansson Waesberge, 1672. First edition, and a fine copy, of one of the great classics of science. "A book of prime importance in electrical discovery, air-pressure and the vacuum pump" (Dibner). Guericke proved the existence of a vacuum through his famous experiment, illustrated by one of the double-page plates. "At Ratisbon in 1654 Guericke had performed one of the most dramatic experiments in the history of science, when, before the Imperial Diet, he showed how two teams of eight horses each could not separate a bronze pair of hemispheres from which he had exhausted the air" (ibid.). To create the vacuum, Guericke invented the air-pump, and in a series of experiments that followed he demonstrated the weight and elasticity of air. As the Wheeler Gift catalogue remarks, "This remarkable work on experimental philosophy ranks next to Gilbert's in the number and importance of the electrical discoveries described. Electric conduction and repulsion, the discharging power of points, the dissipation of charge by flames, the light due to electrification, the crepitating noises of small sparks are all recognized". [Click Below for Full Description]
