[ANON]
Gedruckt in de Brouwery van de Werelt, daer de Verraders haer loon ontfangen. [June 15], 1672. Small 4to; pp. 7, [1], (blank); sewn as issued; printed in Black Letter, save for the final page; signed at end "Belzebub, oversten der Duyvelen, Griffier ordinary Secretaris de Hel". The title-page vignette is of St. George and the Dragon, and a woodcut illustration on verso of the title is of a malevolent-looking monk carrying a club. Knuttel 2-II: 10246. We have located five copies only: BL, Andover-Harvard Theological Library, BNF (2 copies); Mich. (Spec. Coll.) has a variant spelling in the title ("Afgrond" for "Afgront"). Written at the beginning of the so-called "Dutch Wars" in 1672, in which year France (with 6,000 English troops, under the Duke of Monmouth) declared war on the United Provinces. The title translates loosely as "A wonderful and authentic missive written from the deepest abyss of Hell, by Beezlebub, chief of the demons, to the clergy or assembly of clergy in Paris, printed in the Brewery of the World, where the traitors receive their due." A piece of propaganda aimed at the Capucins and Jesuits to capture as many souls as possible in the ensuing battles between the Protestant Dutch and the Catholic French and English.

PUFENDORF, SAMUEL von. - [THE STATE OF NATURE IS PEACE]
- Londini Scanorum (Lund), Adami Junghaus - Vitus Haberegger, 1672. 4to. Contemporary full calf with double blindstamped borders to boards. Spine restored and hinges weak. Otherwise very nice. Title-page dusty and with a little weakness in the paper, presumably from a removed book-plate on the blank part of verso. Last secion of leaves with some light worming to upper blank margin, far from affecting text. All in all a very nice and clean copy. Old owner's name to top of title-page. Title-page printed in red/black. (20), 1227,(9) pp. Scarce first edition of Pufendorf's magnum opus, one of the fundamental works of natural law. In this milestone work of political and legal thought, Pufendorf presents his system of universal law, which profoundly revised the natural law theories of Hobbes and Grotius. In his teaching, that the will of the state is but the sum of the individual wills that constitute it, he shows himself a precursor of Rousseau and of the "Social Contract"."It is a complete system of public, private and international law. Against Hobbes's view he contended that the state of nature was one of peace, not war, and heurged the view that international law. existed between all nations. [a work] of great importance" (David Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law)."In the 'De jure naturae et gentium' Pufendorf took up in great measure the theories of Grotius and sought to complete them by means of the doctrines of Hobbes and of his own ideas. His first important point was that natural law does not extend beyond the limits of this life and that it confines itself to regulati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Calmut was born at Ménil-la-Horgne in Lorraine. He joined the Abbey of St-Mansuy at Toul in 1688. Approximately ten years later he was assigned to teach philosophy and theology in Moyenmoutier Abby. There he gathered the various materials and commentary with which he would eventually compose his important theological studies. Calmet's work initiated a new era of Biblical exegesis in which the dominant allegorical approach to theological analysis was replaced with a critical search for meaning and significance. Calmet was a religious as well as a learned man, and one of the most distinguished members of the Congregation of St. … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA MOTTE, Antoine Houdar de.
Cioranescu 36530; Cohen-De Ricci, p. 594 ("Très belle édition, rare et recherchée"); Fabula Docet 94; Fürstenberg 74; Lewine 289; Populus, Gillot Cat, 31-98; Sander 1095. First edition of a famous French fable book, beautifully illustrated by the most famous artists of the day. The book contains 100 fables by Antoine Houdar de La Motte (1672-1731), modelled after the fables by Jean de La Fontaine, the most important French fable author ever. Of special interest is La Motte-Houdart's introductory essay on the genre of the fable, setting out rules to be followed, based on the classical ideals of true likeness, unity and proper arrangement. He intends to rival both Aesop and La Fontaine. The book at the same time represents a milestone in French book illustration, introducing Rococo miniatures or vignettes, including 62 by the interior and costume designer Claude Gillon, one of his few works as a book-illustrator. The "Actor's fable" is dedicated to him.Binding rubbed with a few small defects; some slight staining and thumbing. Very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]
