widow of Nicolas Rodriguez, 1671 [1672]. Folio (292 x 205 mm). Etched frontispiece by Mathias Arteaga after Fr. de Herrera, etched portrait of Ferdinand III by Arteaga after Murillo, portrait of Charles II of Spain by Herrera, 9 etched plates of emblematic devices by Francisco de Arteaga, Lucas Valdes and Luisa Morales, 9 etched folding views and plans of and in the church at Seville by the Arteagas and Juan de Valdes Leal. 18th-century Spanish mottled calf. A few small scuffs to binding; six folding plates with old repairs to tears crossing images, a very occasional pale dampstain at end. Provenance: pale indistinct inkstamp on title; purchased from Paul and Marianne Gourary, 1964. FIRST EDITION: "the best illustrated Iberian book, by all odds, contained in the Harvard Collection" (Hofer). Celebrating Ferdinand III's (1199-1252) canonization by Pope Clement X, the work was commissioned by the Cathedral of Seville, and the text written by the poet, chronicler and translator Fernando de la Torre Farfán. Illustrating his text and documenting the elaborate festivities were the best Seville artists of the age. The 1671 procession followed the Corpus Christi model, with bell-ringing, fireworks, and lavish street adornment. "The volume is interesting not only as a curious piece of local history, but as being illustrated wholly by artists of Seville. The Triunfo and the other decorations, in the heavy overloaded style of the day, were designed and executed under the direction of the painter, Juan de Valdés Leal (1630-1690), and the sculptor, Bernardo Simon de Pineda, the former himself engraving two of the plates" (William Stirling Maxwell).         et de l'Execution des trois Contes François Nadasdi, Pierre de Zrin, & Frans Christoff Frangespan. Fidellement traduit sur l'exemplaire Alleman

Woodcut printer's device on title. 166 pp. 12mo, cont. red morocco, triple gilt fillet round sides, flat spine gilt, a.e.g. Amsterdam: H. Allard, 1672. First edition in French, originally published the year earlier under the title Aussführliche und warhafftige Beschreibung wie es mit denen Criminal-Processen… This work describes the "Magnate conspiracy" (or "Zriny Frangipani Conspiracy") and its aftermath, which was an attempt to rid Hungary and Croatia of Habsburg and other foreign influences. Petar Zrinski (1621-1671), and Fran Krsto Frankopan (1643-1671), along with the Magyar magnate Ferenc Nadasdy (1621-71), "were implicated in a plot against the Habsburgs and in defense of Hungarian and Croat local privileges, and executed at Wiener Neustadt. This event was momentous for Croatia, for the extinction of the Zrinski and Frankopan families and the confiscation of their vast estates definitely turned the scale in favor of the Crown in Croatia and brought foreign elements into the Croat nobility."-Encycl. Brit. The executions caused a scandal throughout Europe. Today, Zrinski and Frankopan are remembered on the 5 kuna Croatian banknote.

Knuttel 10600; M. Reinders, Printed pandemonium, pp. 195-199; not in Ford; Gove; Scheckter. First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines . The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his (fictitious) voyage and several years residence on a (fictitious) utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino, the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince, who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system, bringing peace and happiness to the island. The three men conclude that the Dutch Republic should introduce such a system. Some spots and a small restoration to the extremities of the title-page, otherwise in good condition. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines.

Separate title page for De Arte Cabalistica. "The De arte cabalistica is the first full treatise on Cabala by a non-Jew . . . It was the fullest exposition hitherto available to European scholars, outside the actual Jewish tradition, of Cabalist theory and practice, with examination of Hebrew letter-manipulations and other Cabalist theories and techniques. Reuchlin devotes much attention to the Names, and particularly to the Name of Jesus as that of the Messiah. The De arte cabalistica was to become the Bible of the Christian Cabalists." - Frances Yates, Giordano Bruno & the Hermetic Tradition.

Catalogue de Livres d'Estampes et de Figures en Taille-douce. Avec un denombrement des Pieces qui y sont contenuës. Fait à Paris en l'annee 1672

      - Woodcut illus. of artists' marks on many leaves. 72 pp. 12mo, early 18th-cent. morocco (about 1740), triple gilt fillet round sides, flat spine gilt, contrasting morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Paris: J. Langlois, 1672. The catalogue of the second print collection formed by Marolles (1600-81), abbot of Villeloin and man of letters. His first collection amounted to 123,400 separate prints by more than 6000 print makers, mounted in 400 large volumes and 141 smaller ones. It was acquired in the name of the King by Colbert in 1667. This was the largest and finest collection ever formed up to that time and is now the foundation of the Bibliothèque Nationale's Department of Prints. In 1626 Marolles began to assemble "the first print collection on the grand scale.[and he].was among the first of the private collectors in history to sacrifice his life and fortune to his passion. He may truly be called the 'Father of Print Collecting'?by the very scope of his activity, and his interest in separating his many thousands of pieces of paper into artist schools, Marolles lifted the printed picture from a by-path of typography to being one of the major prizes of the born collector."-Taylor, The Taste of Angels: A History of Art Collecting. The second collection includes illustrated books and is as important as the first. It describes the 100,848 prints and 10,576 drawings Marolles purchased and organized in the six years following the sale of his first collection. The contents of this second collection were dispersed. The catalogue contains a series of 163 reproductions of marks of artists on pages 29-43. This book is very probably the first printed work in which the monograms of artists are systematically reproduced. Fine and large copy. The second catalogue is rather scarcer than the first. Armorial bookplate of Louis de la Forets, Comte d'Armaillé and another. Signature of L. Potier. This is surely Antoine-Laurent Potier (1806-81), one of the greatest Parisian booksellers of the 19th century. He started his career in 1831 and retired in 1872. He formed a large and important private collection, sold 1870-82, which was rich in bibliography. ? Besterman, Old Art Books, p. 72. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun

First edition of the founding text of scientific botany. Author Nehemiah Grew began his career as a physician but soon developed an interest in plant anatomy, in part because the subject had not yet been rigorously investigated. "Grew was a conscious pioneer in a hitherto neglected area...  His work was primarily marked by his brilliant observation and description of plants and their component parts; having begun by making observations using only the naked eye, Grew supplemented these with the use of a microscope under the tutelage of his colleague Hooke. His presentations to the society began in 1672-4 with the roots, branches, and trunks of plants, proceeding thereafter to their leaves, flowers, fruit, and seeds. In each area he was innovative, studying for the first time many features of plants that have since been taken for granted, such as their cell-like structure and the growth rings in wood, and deploying techniques which have since become commonplace, such as the use of transverse, radial, and tangential longitudinal sections to analyse the structure of stems and roots. He was also an innovator in the terminology he used to describe plants, first using such terms as 'radicle' or 'parenchyma', a word adapted from its use in animal anatomy by Francis Glisson. Grew was primarily interested in the morphology and taxonomy of plants, but this led him to study plant physiology; he thus considered how buds grew, how seeds developed, and other related topics. He also recognized the sexual nature of plant reproduction, though, with characteristic modesty, he acknowledged that this idea had already occurred to the physician Sir Thomas Millington" (ODNB). The Anatomy of Vegetables was Grew's first and most important book, and was not superseded until the 19th century. With a General Account of Vegetation Founded Thereon. London: for Spencer Hickman, 1672. Octavo. Contemporary calf rebacked to style. 3 folding engraved plates. A few contemporary annotations in ink. Sympathetically rebacked with professional repairs to corners and edges, unevenly trimmed slightly affecting some words in the dedication and on a few other pages, some fraying and minor worming to fore-edge, a little spotting and toning to contents, professional tissue repairs to the edges of the Royal Society permission leaf and title page, minor dampstaining to margins of final leaves. A very good copy. Bibliography: Norman 944;  Dibner 21; Wing G-1946; Morton, pp. 178-195.

Fol. Tb. in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, mit Kupferallegorie, 9 nn. Bll., 1360 S., (Index:) 83 Bll. Zeitgenössischer blindgeprägter Schweinslederband auf 5 Bünden geheftet. (Exlibris und kl. St.a. T.). Overall in fine condition. Bookplate of Mons. Nabuco. Armorial bookplate of Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, printed in England, signed in print with tiny initials W.P.B., dated 1927. (16 ll.), 593 pp., (1 l.), 95 pp., lacking leaf Lll4, the divisional title to the "Poema". *** FIRST EDITION of this biography of the "Apostle of Brazil," an invaluable source of information for the history of Brazil and the earliest Jesuit missions there in the second half of the sixteenth century. The work has long been recognized as very rare. When the centennial of Brazilian independence was being celebrated in 1922, the President of Portugal gave a copy of this work to the President of Brazil; before he could do so, however, a special law had to be passed allowing the volume to be taken out of Portugal. In 1926, Holmes listed it among the rarest books of the Oliveira Lima collection. Borba notes that "copies complete with the portrait are very rare today." The Catalogue of the John Carter Brown Library comments that this life does not seem to derive wholly from Beretario's 1617 Latin biography, although Backer-Sommervogel stated that all later biographies derived from that one. The second edition of the Vida appeared only in 1943. Anchieta (1534-1597), known as the "Apostle of Brazil" or the "Thaumatourgos of the New World," was one of the most important figures in sixteenth-century Brazil. He went there in 1553 (see p. 6) and, with 13 others, founded the Jesuit school at Piratininga, later the site of São Paulo (pp. 17-54). There he taught Latin to the Indians and wrote the first grammar and vocabulary in their language, Tupi. In 1563 he and Father Manuel de Nobrega went to Iperoig to negotiate peace with the Tamoyos (pp. 73-98). "It is more than probable that this embassy was the salvation of the Portuguese colonies," writes Southey (I, 228). This biography also provides information on the Indians, on Jesuit missions, on Anchieta's disciples, on the rebellion of the Tamoyos and Tupis, on the French attack on Rio de Janeiro, and on the arrival in 1582 of a 16-vessel Spanish fleet under Diego Florez Valdes that was on its way to secure the Strait of Magellan (pp. 270-74). Pages 443-593 contain Anchieta's 5,786-verse Latin poem "De beata Virgine Dei Matre Maria." Anchieta, while negotiating with the Tamoyos at Iperoig, vowed to write a poem on the Virgin's life in order to keep himself from being tempted by Indian women. Since he had no paper or writing instruments (so the story goes), he traced the verses on the sand and memorized what he had written each day. The poem was first published in Vasconcellos' Chronica da Companhia de Jesu do Estado do Brasil, 1663, and went through many later editions. The Vida is beautifully printed by one of Portugal's greatest seventeenth-century typographers. This copy not only has the portrait (often lacking), but has a good impression of it - usually it is very faint. The portrait shows Anchieta surrounded by the wild animals of Brazil: jaguars, snakes, parrots, etc. The paper is thin but nearly opaque; in most copies, it is so thin as to be almost transparent. Simão de Vasconcellos (1596-1671), a native of Porto, grew up in Brazil and became a Jesuit at Bahia, where he later served as vice-rector of the Jesuit College and promoted the construction of what became the cathedral. He had great influence among his contemporaries, making enormous donations to the poor and acting as confessor to viceroys. His Chronica da Companhia de Jesu do Estado do Brasil, Lisbon 1663, is another fundamental work on sixteenth-century Brazil, as is his Vida do P. João de Almeida. Provenance: Joaquim de Sousa-Leão, distinguished Brazilian historian and diplomat of Portuguese ancestry, was a significant book and art collector. He wrote on art and historical subjects, being an expert on the Flemish painter Frans Post: see Frans Post 1612-1680, Amsterdam: A.L.         Rare collection of published letters by Isaac Newton on his theory of light, and on Newton's telescope. [Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, volume 7].

      - London, John Martyn, 1672-1673. 4to (22.0 x 16.1 cm). This is a collection of all original issues forming the true first edition of volume 7 of the "Philosophical Transactions" (issues 81-91), including a general title page for the entire volume. These issues comprise pages 3,999-5,172, plus an index and four foldout plates. Many figures in the text. Contemporary leather panels with a fine, old style leather spine with five raised, gilt-ornamented bands, rich gilt compartments with floral pattern and two burgundy morocco labels with gilt title. Mottled edges.l One of the most important volumes of the 'Philosophical Transactions'. Isaac Newton published his famous theory of light and colours in volume 6 (no. 80) of the Transactions. It was a publication that shook the scientific world of that day, and is still considered one of the cornerstones of science. Naturally, a lively debate followed - staged partly in the "Philosophical Transactions" during the following year. His theory, which included the notion that white light was in fact a combination of colours, also explained chromatic abberation. Consequently, Newton turned his attention to telescopes and devised a new type of telescope that combined refraction with reflection. It is the first paper in this volume, which is the collection of original issues of the Transactions from 1672 and 1673, and thus a fascinating window to the period just after the publication of Newton's theory of light. Apart from Newton's answers to his critics on his new theory of light, and some letters of his critics (the Jesuit Ignatius Pardies in particular used the Transactions to publish his critiques on Newton's theory), this volume contains several additional papers by Newton and others on Newton's telescope. This type of telescope, with a cleverly constructed short tube, is still very popular among amateur astronomists. "Newton built his reflecting telescope because he suspected it could prove his theory that white light is composed of a spectrum of colours. Colour distortion (chromatic aberration) was the primary fault of refracting telescopes of Newton's day, and there were many theories as to what caused it. During the mid-1660s with his work on the theory of colour, Newton concluded this defect was caused by the lens of the refracting telescope behaving the same as prisms he was experimenting with, breaking white light into a rainbow of colours around bright astronomical objects. If this was true, then chromatic aberration could be eliminated by building a telescope which did not use a lens - a reflecting telescope." (Wikipedia). Furthermore there are important contributions on, for example, astronomy and science by Flamsteed, Cassini, Hevelius, Boyle, Huygens and others, and natural history by Lister, and others. This volume contains the following contributions by Newton (which deviates from those listed in Gray, p. 45, who records one paper less): "An accompt of a new catadioptrical telescope, invented by Mr. Newton", pp. 4004-4009, with a folding plate; "An extract of a letter, received very lately (March 19th) from the inventor of this new telescope", pp. 4009-4010; "Mr. Newton's letter to the publisher of March 26, 1672, containing some more suggestions about his new telescope" pp. 4032-4035; "An extract of another letter of the same to the publisher, dated 30 March. 1672. by way of answer to some objections, made by an ingenious French philosopher to the new reflecting telescope", pp. 4034-4034; "Mr. Isaac Newton's considerations upon part of a letter of monsieur de Bercé printed in the eighth French Memoire, containing the catadrioptrical telescope, pretended to be improv'd and refined by M. Cassegrain", pp. 4056-4059; "Some experiments propos'd in relation to Mr. Newtons Theory of light, printed in Numb. 80; together with the observations made thereupon by the author of that theory; communicated in a letter of his from Cambridge, April 13. 1672.", pp. 4059-4062; "Mr Newtons letter [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
