ALLESTREE, Richard?]
London: Tim. Garthwait, 1669. [22], 474, [6] p. 16 cm. Engraved frontispiece and title page. Full leather with blank impressing. Respined and corners repaired. Hinges repaired internally, ink signature on front free endpaper. Tear in p. 143, repaired edges to last two printed leaves. Pp. 167-8 missing, 215-6 misbound between pp. 194-5, 223-34 and 363-88 missing. The Whole Duty of Man is an English "High Church" devotional work, first published by the anonymous author, with an introduction by Henry Hammond, in 1658. It was both popular and influential for two centuries. The consensus view of modern scholars is that the likely author was Richard Allestree, but at the time of its publication towards the end of the Interregnum, when Cromwell ruled, the High Church tradition it represents was a politically dangerous position. The authorship was well concealed, and it has been noted that the work has been attributed to at least 27 people. Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Donne, John
Henry Herringman, 1669. Henry Herringman. Donne, John. Poems, &c. by John Donne, late Dean of Saint Paul's. With Elegies on the Author's Death. To which is added Divers Copies under his own hand, Never before Printed. Savoy: Henry Herringman, 1669. 414pp. 16mo. Book condition: Very good with later end sheets. Small, contemporary notation ("poems by J D and elegies on the authors death Lond. 1635") and numbers in front matter, which is significantly tanned with chipped edges. The frontispiece from Death's Duell (John Donne in his winding sheet) had been pasted in opposite the title page (fragments of the edges remain) and has offset a ghostly impression to the verso and recto of the title page. Slight tanning throughout but overall handsome and sturdy with crisp, clean pages. G.L. Keynes writes in the third edition of his Bibliography of Dr. John Donne: "Printed by Thomas Newcombe (1649-1681). There are numerous changes in the text of this edition. Hazlitt states that that pp. 95-98, were suppressed, but I have not seen a copy in which this is the case. This edition does not, as is sometimes stated, contain a portrait. PP. 121, 123, 221 are numbered 221, 213, 291, but with these exceptions the pagination is correct up to p. 304 (U8b); it then becomes very erratic, and the remaining quires are numbered as follows: sign. X is paginated 307-22; sign. Y, 321-36; sign. Z, 377--92; and sign. Aa-Dd, 353-414.". Keynes, Donne 84. . Very Good. 1669.

Paris, C. Lambin, (1668-), 1669. 4to. (8), 152 pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemp. richly gilt calf, gilt dentelle central cover decoration showing the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gilt spine on five raised bands (upper spine-end and corners repaired). Marbled pastedowns. Second, enlarged edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphèvre" in Paris and first published in 1661. Both editions are dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait, which is here more delicately executed (by Nicolas de Larmessin, in 1664). The large chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing cites the Persian Gulf and several specific places there as among the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus & Bassora: aupres de Baroyn [i.e., Bahrain], Catiffa, Iuffa, Camaron, & autres lieux de ce Golfe [...]" (p. 68). This chapter is here "augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production [...] New chapters comprise Ch. 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, and Ch. 18 on pricing of pearls. LOWER, RICHARD. - [CHANGING OUR VIEW OF HEART AND BLOOD]
Elzevier, 1669. Small 8vo. Contemporary full vellum. Old bookplate removed from inside of front board. Slight discolouration around "item" on title-page. A bit of brownspotting throughout. Last text leaf with small holes to outer margin, far from affecting text. All in all a very nice copy. (16), 232 pp + 7 engraved plates, the last of which with a neat reinforcement to folding. ¶ The rare second edition, printed merely a few months after the first (London, 1669), of Lower's groundbreaking main work, which immediately changed that the way the role of the heart and the lungs were perceived in the human body. The work is considered a milestone of medical history, as it provides one of the earliest accounts of blood transfusion, it established air as a necessity for life, and it was the first to demonstrate the scroll-like structure of the heart. The work is groundbreaking in giving the most accurate description of the structure of the heart to date, in exploring the structure and function of the veins and arteries, and in elucidating the mechanism of respiration. "It had been known since antiquity that venous and arterial blood differed in colour; Lower showed that this difference was caused purely by the admixture of air as the blood from the right side of the hear flowed through the lungs. He even showed that venous blood could be made to resemble arterial bllod by shaking a sample in air. He concluded that the change in colour was caused by the blood's absorption of air, which explained why air is necessary to life." (PMM 149). The present work furthermore contains a very … [Click Below for Full Description]

Castell, Edmund
London: Thomas Roycroft, 1669. First edition, 2 parts in 1; folio, title page in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece by William Faithorne, text primarily in triple column and printed in Roman, Italic, Hebrew and a variety of other exotic fonts, pp. [8] & 4008 columns (this copy's pagination identical to variant B in ESTC); in this copy column 1108 is repeated; collated as in ESTC: a-b² [chi]1(=*F2?) *A-*E² *F1 A-Z² 2A-4L 4M²; 4N-5E² 5F-9C ; ²A-3B² (the terminal Lexicon Orientale in this copy is misbound after 3B2, as often); full contemporary calf recently rebacked, red morocco label on spine; corners bumped and showing; covers worn, a few old institutional rubberstamps, but generally a good, sound copy, with occasional early annotations in ink and pencil throughout. One of the great scholastic undertakings of the 17th century, under squalid and heart-wrenching conditions. The work was 18 years in the making and the story of its compilation is fraught with tales of unremitting toil, constant vigils, bodily suffering, loss of fortune, orphaned children, prison terms and fire (see DNB for the long, sad tale surrounding Castell and his life-long labor). Brian Walton, in his Preface to the great London Polyglot Bible of 1657 (also printed by Roycroft -- "conspicuous among printers who did credit to their profession in the 17th century"), cites Castell as being especially responsible for the Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions. Description: From the large folio French Elzevier bible published in 1669. Ref: Shirley. Hoogsteder Mercury, 13/14, p.60Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Nicolaes Berchem' after 'I. Elzevier'. Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), who is not as well-known for his religious drawings as for he is for landscapes, but was a versatile artist. A prolific Dutch artist, Berchem often painted in the Italianate style, and became well-known particularly because many of his paintings were reproduced as prints. In 1669 the Elzevier publishing house put out a French Bible, for which they enlisted popular artists to illustrate a frontispiece and maps. The La Sainte Bible appears to have been planned at least a decade before its publication, and was to include 5 maps to illustrate several stories. Berchem worked with Jan de Visscher (1632-1692) and Abraham Blotelingh (1640-1690) as engravers of the five maps.
