VISCHER, Georg Matthäus
Vienna, 1669. Vienna,, 1669. 1669 [and] 1670. A pair of engraved wall maps on 12 and 16 sheets respectively, the map on 12 sheets extending north to south from Passau to the Monastery at Admont, and west to east from Mondsee to Seitenstetten, vignette views of mining, lakes, water mills, and castles, key noting cities, castles, market towns, and churches; the map on 16 sheets extending north to south from Moravia to Stiria, and west to east from the town of Steyr to Prespurg (Bratislava), vignette views of the Danube from Vienna looking west, and the royal residence in Vienna, upper right and left respectively, and fine cartouches lower left and right, some minor loss to corners of a few sheets, each housed within modern quarter red morocco solander boxes. These two wall maps would set the standard for the mapping of Austria until the middle of the next century. The map of Upper Austria is beautifully engraved by Melchior Kussel. To the corners and sides of the map are topographical vignettes, together with depictions of mines and water mills. Below the plan is a scale bar flanked by two putti, together with surveying tools and globes. The map of Lower Austria is dedicated to Leopold I (1640-1705), whose cameo, along with that of his royal consort, are depicted above an image of the Imperial Palace in Vienna. The palace would be destroyed during the Turkish siege of 1683. To the upper right corner is a view of the Danube from Vienna looking west, with a key naming the towns and castles. Below the map are two fine cartouches together with a depiction of Vischer surveying … [Click Below for Full Description]

An impressive tome from the famous 1669 Elzevier Holy Bible. This volume is the first volume which includes the Old Testament books through Song of Songs. This printing was Des Marets' annotated edition of the French Geneva version. Darlow & Moule note that editors, S and H des Marets took the text of Hayes' 1652 Paris edition. It also features incredible folding maps of the Holy Land and Jerusalem, in fact, the maps alone from this tome are considered extremely valuable and desirable. [Attributes: First Edition]

Original pen and black ink and colour wash on fine paper, laid down in the nineteenth-century on heavier stock (upper left-hand corner torn with loss and restored with manuscript facsimile, old stab holes on each side margin, old vertical fold and mount on verso). A superb bird's-eye view of central Crete, shown during the final struggle for control of the island in June of 1669 after nearly 22 years of conflict between its Venetian defenders and its Ottoman attackers. The outcome of this endgame was the concern of the whole of Christian Europe, not just that of its Venetian rulers. The Siege of Crete, as part of the fourth Cretan War lasted for 22 years, 1648-1669, and was waged between the defending Serene Republic of Venice and the attacking forces of the Ottoman Empire, who were ultimately victorious. This anonymous, beautiful and extremely detailed birds-eye view of the central part of the island is oriented to the south, with the city of Candia, now Heraklion, in the forefront and Mount Ida on the horizon. Coastal place-names are mostly placed at right-angles in typical portolan style; inland, castles and towns are named, roads and rivers are shown, and invading Ottoman troop positions are depicted exploding with fire-power, and are noted and named in the key. However, it is the fortified city of Candia t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Front hinge slightly opened. A very good copy. Provenance: J. H. Harrison (ex-libris on the front pastedown). Third and best edition of the Mensa Isiaca by the Paduan antiquarian Pignoria, the first scholarly work on Egyptology, which first appeared in Venice in 1605, under the title Vetustissimae tabulae aeneae sacris Aegyptiorum. The 'Mensa Isiaca' or the table of Isis was an elaborate bronze table with enamel and silver inlay discovered in the ruins of the Temple of Isis after the Sack of Rome in 1527; it may have been executed – as Pignoria himself suggests – in Rome in the first century AD. The table was then bought by Cardinal Pietro Bembo (it is also known as the 'Bembine Table'); after his death in 1547 the table was acquired by the Gonzagas, remaining in their collections until the capture of Mantua in 1630. The table of Isis eventually came into the hands of Cardinal Pava, who gave it to the Duke of Savoy, who then presented it to the King of Sardinia. In 1797 the tablet was carried in Paris by French troops, and in 1809 – as Alexandre Lenoir attests – it w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary limp vellum, spine with inked title; blue edges. A very good copy, some minor foxing, a few spots.First edition of this "great work [.] which outlines the principles of modern geology" (DSB), by the Danish anatomist Niels Stensen, better known as Nicolaus Steno, then physician at the Florentine court. The De solido is dedicated to Ferdinand II, Grand Duke of Tuscany. In this work, a cornerstone of geology based on data collected in the Arno Valley, Steno sought to describe the anatomy of the earth and to explain the entire system of nature stratum super stratum. His contributions to plate tectonic theory and to stratigraphy is based on his theory that layers or strata of the earth, which are not horizontal, must have been tilted or folded by a force, such as an earthquake, after they formed. His principle of superposition also applied to other geologic events on the surface, such as lava flows and ash layers from volcanic eruptions. Although brief in form – the work was only intended as an introduction to a larger work that Steno would never write – the impact of De solido was far greater than its modest size would suggest, establishing important principles of geology and elaborating upon new tools for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely Rare 1669 First English Language Edition Of "An Embassy from the East-India Company By Johan Nieuhof The First Book About The Real China Many Illustrations LAST PRICE REDUCTION! A rare 1669 first English language edition of An Embassy from the East-India Company by Dutch author and explorer Johan Nieuhof, originally published in Dutch in 1665. Due to its tremendous success, several other editions were published that were heavily edited apparently for commercial reasons. It was then translated into French, German, Latin and English in 1665, 1666, 1668, and 1669 respectively. While the other versions were published by Van Meurs, the English version was published and translated by John Ogilby. The book, split into two parts and an appendix, contains notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made while he was a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer's embassy to the emperor of China. It also contains a written account of the trip and 149 illustrations. The first part of the work contains details of the entire journey from Canton to Peking and back while the second part is a general overview of China. This book was important to the time because it was a unique source about China and its practices. The images were an important aspect of the book because they more accurately depicted the people of China versus the fantastical European illustrations from the past. Malpighi (Marcello) and Carlo Fracassati.
Caspar Commelius. woodcut printer's device on title, with 5 folding engraved plates, minor damp-staining at the beginning, pp. [iv], 260, 12mo, contemporary vellum, textblock detached from lower cover where a shorter tract appears to have been removed, blindstamp of Mark Pattison of Lincoln College on title, good. 'Fracassati, Malpighi's close friend, confidant, and colleague at Bologna, was responsible for assembling these letters for publication. The work contains four letters of Malpighi and two of Fracassati on the brain, tongue, adipose tissues, and skin. The five folding plates illustrate Malpighi's microscopic investigations of the brain and tongue. Malpighi's name is celebrated in several eponymous anatomical structures in the kidney, spleen, skin, and lungs. It is in the epistle on the tongue that he described the mucosal layer beneath the epidermis which is now called the Malpighian layer. In "De omento, pinguedine, et adiposis ductibus," Malpighi reported his observation of the red blood corpuscles. Unfortunately he mistook them for globules of fat passing into the blood and it wasn't until 1674 that Leeuwenhoek gave the first accurate description of the erythrocytes' (Heirs of Hippocrates). Malpighi's second letter, Exercitatio epistolica de lingua, and Fracassati's first, of the same title, are addressed to Giovanni Alfonso Borelli. Originally published in 1665 under title: Tetras anatomicarum epistolarum; the 1669 edition includes De externo tactus organo, which was published separately in 1665. (Heirs of Hippocrates 570)

GUYBERT, Philbert
1669. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Philbert Guybert was a 17th-century French physician who had a particular desire to care for the poor. His works were designed to as a self-help book and offered accessible and affordable remedies for illnesses of varying degrees including treating the plague, bleeding, as well as directions on disposing of dead bodies. 'The Charitable Physician' is Guybert's complete works and was an important book in helping quell the conflicts between Parisian apothecaries and doctors of the time. He also wrote about using wine as a medicine and how to make medicinal wine and jellies. This was important as it helped establish accepted processes for drying ingredients used in powders and pills. Guybert provides lists of common substances and their medicinal properties including vegetables, plant, minerals, and animal - all of which Guybert considered to be medicinal in some way. (Perkins, p.122) This 1669 edition of the works of Guybert includes the important treatise by Patin on the conservation of health, which first appeared in 1632. (Bynum, p.72). AESOP
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him." ― Aesop, Aesop's Fables Aesop's fables have been printed for centuries and include some of the most famous fables and tales of all time. Originating sometime in the 6th- to 7th-century BC, these tales have appeared in popular culture for well over 2000 years in the form of books, plays, songs, and visual media. This rare 1669 edition was published in Venice by Cestari and was supplemented with incredible, in-text woodcut engravings throughout. In addition to the fables themselves, Cestari included a biographical sketch, or life of Aesop, written by 13th-century Byzantine monk Maximus Planudes. This edition also appears to be the first and only edition published by Cestari. [Attributes: First Edition]

1669. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Alexander Ross was an important Scottish controversialist writer who is remembered for his various attack writings on prominent figures such as Hobbes, Harvey, and Browne. He also published a series of works on astronomy and religion in which he defines aspects of world theological beliefs. The main focus of 'Les Religions du Monde' was to demonstrate that these religions were practicing heresy and idol worship. Also included are 12 fascinating double-page engravings depicting rituals, rites, ceremonies and more! [Attributes: First Edition]

WEBB, John.
London: for Nath. Brook, 1669. Octavo (169 x 105 mm). Modern half calf to style, morocco label, marbled sides. Foxe Point bookplate. A couple of early leaves creased and dusty at upper outer corner where turned down as placemarkers, a very good copy. Large folding engraved map of China, title printed in red and black. With the errata leaf p3 at end but without final blank. First edition, an influential treatise proposing Chinese as the original language, and one of the earliest books in English discussing Chinese culture in any depth. The architect John Webb, a pupil of Inigo Jones, argued that Noah could be identified with the legendary king Yao; that he had withdrawn from the tribes whose languages were confounded at Babel long before that point in biblical history, and that he had built the Ark in China, landed it there, and bequeathed to China the language spoken by Adam, preserved to Webb's day in modern China as the language of the court. Webb's view of Chinese script was strongly influenced by not only Semedo but also the Jesuit polymath and hermeticist Athanasius Kircher. Webb was also inspired by John Wilkins's recent publication on artificial language, arguing that Wilkins, whether knowingly or not, had based the idea of his artificial language on Chinese. Webb's proposed harmonisation of world history was taken seriously by many; his work was a major spur to the construction of English sinology in the later decades of the 17th century. The work precedes by almost two decades the Paris Jesuit edition of Confucius, published in 1687. The rare folding map of China, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Milton
JOHN MILTON "Paradise Lost" FIRST EDITION 1669 Simmons, 1669. This one of the original 1,200 first edition copies printed in 1667 by the publisher Simmons. Simmons issued the first edition over a few years, adding a different title page from time to time. By the time the 1200 copies of the first run had sold out, seven different variations of the title page has been produced, bearing dates of 1667, 1668 and 1669. There is no known relationship between when a given copy of the TEXT itself was printed, and the title page it bears. Thus, the first printed copy of the 1200 copies could just as easily have a 1669 title page as one dated 1667 or 1668. It was just a matter of what copy the publisher pulled out of the original pile, and attached a title page. In addition, the bibliographer Hugh Amory argued convincingly that the 1668 title page was probably issued earlier than the one bearing the date 1667. In this case the title page bears the full name of the author and the year 1669. In addition, this copy includes the important preliminary matter that Milton added during 1668 after the first copies were issued. These include "The Argument," in which Milton describes the program of each of the ten books, and "The Verse," in which Milton defends his choice of using blank verse rather than rhyme. Very good condition, in leather binding and gold gilt-edged pages, housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition]

BAXTER, Richard
1669. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. PURITAN Saints Everlasting Rest Richard Baxter Bible Devotional on HEAVEN "Lay siege to your sins, and starve them out by keeping away the food and fuel which is their maintenance and life." ― Richard Baxter Richard Baxter's "The Saints' Everlasting Rest" has long been recognized as one of the great classics of Christian devotion, and it is by this book that he is best known. This important text was written during a bout of extreme suffering from a debilitating illness, perhaps the inspiration for the work. In this work, Baxter identifies four different religious parties that would emerge - Moderate Presbyterians, Independents, Episcopals, and Erastians. Baxter wrote this book for his own personal enjoyment at a point when he was unemployed. Lowndes mentions this book, and all editions, to include the incredible frontispiece. Milton, John
London: S. Simmons, 1669. First Edition. Fifth title page. Small quarto, 19th-century full olive pebbled morocco, gilt armorial crest on front cover (Macclesfield), raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom clamshell box. With the arms of the Earls of Macclesfield in gilt on the front cover of the morocco binding by Hatton. Title page with a bit of soiling, skillful paper repairs to outer edge; a few minor marginal tears and repairs to corners of text, rarely touching border only, not text, which is generally clean. Morocco joints rubbed, binding sound and attractive. An exceptionally desirable copy with distinguished provenance from the collection of the Earls of Macclesfield, North Library at Shirburn Castle, renowned for its extensive holdings in the fields of science and early technology, history, travel and the military, John Dryden referred to Paradise Lost as "one of the greatest, most noble and sublime poems which either this age or nation has produced." Although the tremendously difficult circumstances under which Milton produced the work are legendary-- he had been blinded by long years of service as secretary under Cromwell and was in political disfavor after the restoration of Charles II-- the troubled printing history of the work is less well known. The publisher Samuel Simmons reluctantly agreed to print a small first edition of 1300 copies, as he was assuming a heavy risk in sponsoring an epic poem, for which no precedent in English publishing had been established. As payment for the first edition, Milton received a total of ten poun … [Click Below for Full Description]

Light browning and occasional light foxing to text, light soiling, later library inkstamp and eighteenth-century owner signature and annotation to title page. $750. * Only edition. Active in the Protectorate, where he was Cromwell's legal advisor, Sheppard aimed to reform English common law. Ahead of his time in many ways, many of his proposals anticipate changes that were adopted in the nineteenth century, especially in the Juridicature acts of 1875-78. Sheppard is best-known for his work on real property due to his landmark treatise the Touch-Stone of Common Assurances, which was first published in 1648, and, to a lesser extent, The President of Presidents, which was first published in 1655. His work in this field continued during the Restoration period with The Law of Common Assurances, a treatise that combined a synthesis of his Touch-Stone with updated material and The Practical Counsellor in the Law, a handbook published in 1671. Vischer, Georg M.:
(Augsburg, Melchior Küssel, 1669). Kupferstichkarte von 12 Platten auf Leinwand des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgezogen und auf einem Holzstab des 19. Jahrhunderts montiert. Erste Ausgabe der ersten großen Vischer`schen Landkarte. - Descriptio Austriae S. 126 (Tafel 28). [Click Below for Full Description]

DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO. SIGLO XVII.
[Click Below for Full Description]
