François d'Aubusson duc de LA FEUILLADE

Extremely Rare 1669 First English Language Edition Of "An Embassy from the East-India Company By Johan Nieuhof The First Book About The Real China Many Illustrations LAST PRICE REDUCTION! OUR GALLERY IS CLOSING IN 2019 ! A rare 1669 first English language edition of An Embassy from the East-India Company by Dutch author and explorer Johan Nieuhof, originally published in Dutch in 1665. Due to its tremendous success, several other editions were published that were heavily edited apparently for commercial reasons. It was then translated into French, German, Latin and English in 1665, 1666, 1668, and 1669 respectively. While the other versions were published by Van Meurs, the English version was published and translated by John Ogilby. The book, split into two parts and an appendix, contains notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made while he was a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer's embassy to the emperor of China. It also contains a written account of the trip and 149 illustrations. The first part of the work contains details of the entire journey from Canton to Peking and back while the second part is a general overview of China. This book was important to the time because it was a unique source about China and its practices. The images were an important aspect of the book because they more accurately depicted the people of China versus the fantastical European illustrations from th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Borri, Francesco Giuseppe:
Copenhagen, Daniel Paulli 1669. 4to; (4), 68 pages, with engraved title vignette and 7 woodcuts (ophthalmological instruments and eye glasses) in the text. Contemporary vellum. Some browning, title page with marginal restorations. -------------- The first book dealing with the chemical constitution of the brain. -------------------------- FIRST EDITION. The book divides in two parts. The first deals with the chemical constitution of the brain, in which Borri states, that about seventy five percent of the total weight of the human brain consists of water, the rest are fatty materials. Whilst Descartes (1662), Willis (1664) and Steno (1665) gave attention to the brain function, it was Borri who was the first to formulate a theory on the chemical constitution of the brain. Borri’s thesis obviously was affected by the uprising scientific debate on the subject. Only in 1719, Johann Thomas Hensing published his celebrated „Cerebri examen chemicum“, which applies to be the first comprehensive chemical examination of the brain. Not until in the 1950s, neurochemistry became a recognized scientific research discipline. --------------------------- In the second part Borri explains his method of the restitution of the eye fluid by infusion of celandine juice, a secret which he claims to have obtained from the „English chemist“ Sir Robert Southwell. Borri’s letter is followed by illustrations of different ophthalmological instruments and eyeglasses with explanations. At the end the author’s invention is praised in a poem by the Danish physician and chemist Ole Borch. ------ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leiden & Rotterdam, Hakkens 1669. . 4to. [XLIV],523,[1 errata]p. With engraved title. Contemp. overlapping vellum. A first blank with bibliographical annotations in a nineteenth-century hand. First edition thus. A much enlarged edition of a famous plea for commercial and industrial freedom originally published (and several times reissued) in 1662 as a small volume with the title Interest van Holland'. The True interest and political maxims of the Republick of Holland' (the title of the English edition) expresses much of the ideological background of the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century. The book was translated into German, French (as Memoires de Jean de Witt'!) and English (. by John de Witt'!), apparently not without success because these translations too went through several editions, even in the eighteenth century. *Wildenberg 1111. Edmund Castell
London: Thomas Roycroft, 1669. First edition, 2 parts in 1; folio, title page in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece by William Faithorne, text primarily in triple column and printed in Roman, Italic, Hebrew and a variety of other exotic fonts, pp. [8] & 4008 columns (this copy's pagination identical to variant B in ESTC); in this copy column 1108 is repeated; collated as in ESTC: a-b² [chi]1(=*F2?) *A-*E² *F1 A-Z² 2A-4L 4M²; 4N-5E² 5F-9C; ²A-3B² (the terminal Lexicon Orientale in this copy is misbound after 3B2, as often); full contemporary calf recently rebacked, red morocco label on spine; corners bumped and showing; covers worn, a few old institutional rubberstamps, but generally a good, sound copy, with occasional early annotations in ink and pencil throughout. One of the great scholastic undertakings of the 17th century, under squalid and heart-wrenching conditions. The work was 18 years in the making and the story of its compilation is fraught with tales of unremitting toil, constant vigils, bodily suffering, loss of fortune, orphaned children, prison terms and fire (see DNB for the long, sad tale surrounding Castell and his life-long labor). Brian Walton, in his Preface to the great London Polyglot Bible of 1657 (also printed by Roycroft -- "conspicuous among printers who did credit to their profession in the 17th century"), cites Castell as being especially responsible for the Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions. While Castell's work "marks an epoch in Semitic scholarship. .. it met with a deplorably cold welcome in England. .. At the time of … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Collinges, John), re: Katharine Courten and Frances Hobart
London: Publisher Not Identified. First printing, 1669. Small 8vo, bound in early 19th century half leather and marbled boards, pp. (16) 303, with full title page and title pages for each treatise. Early handwriting identifying author as John Collinges on the title page of The Excellent Woman (possibly in Collinges' hand), some foxing to outer leaves, age toning to text, binding very good but rubbed. OCLC locates 4 copies, with the copy at Columbia noted as having its second sub- title page signed, but this may refer to printed identification of the author and not a signature. The other three copies in OCLC are at the British Library, the British Library Reference Collections, and the British Library of Political and Economic Science. Wing (2nd ed., 1994), C5329 -- no copies currently on the market and none at auction in past 30 plus years. Collinges (1623-1690) was an English minister, associated with the district of Norwich where he was part of the household of Sir John Hobart for some time. He was an avid controversialist and published a number of tracts, sermons and exigeses. Very Good.

It was composed while Penn (1644-1718) was confined in the Tower of London for nine months for the "blasphemy" of his unlicensed tract, The Sandy Foundation Shaken (1668), which criticised what were then considered self-evident Christian truths like traditional interpretations of the Trinity, the doctrine of justification, and Christ's atonement.
