Coale (Josiah)
Printed in the Year, 1669. thumbed, single wormhole removing a few letters, pp. 20, 4to, nineteenth-century half maroon roan, rubbed, gilt lettering on spine all but illegible, early pagination in ink 243-261, no doubt indicating that this was once in a tract volume, but if so, on the evidence of the binding, not for well over a century, good. The first section, the Song of the Judgments, was 'written at the movings of the Spirit of the Lord, the Eighth day of the Thirrd Month, 1662 as I was travelling in the Wilderness, as without, on Long-Island, in America .' The last section comprises Coale's dying words, before which is a Testimony concerning Lodowick Muggleton - 'He is a Son of Darkness, and a Co-Worker with the Prince of the Bottomless-Pit.' The 1662 edition is known in 1 copy only: it was reprinted in 1663, before its present appearance, where there are additions. Josiah Coale was a Quaker missionary who traveled extensively in America. He preached in Maryland and Virginia before traveling through dangerous territory overland to New England. He returned to England, but a few years later made another trip to the West Indies. He was several times arrested in England. (Smith, J. Friends' books, 1.433; ESTC R26613)

Kerll, Johann Caspar.
München, Johann Jaecklin, 1669. 8vo. (6), 66 SS. Aus seiner Schule gingen u. a. auch A. Steffani und F. X. A. Murschhauser hervor. - In seinem Vorwort äußert sich Kerll sehr verärgert über die vielen Plagiate seiner Werke und kritisiert den Stil seiner Kollegen im In- und … [Click Below for Full Description]

A prolific Dutch artist, Berchem often painted in the Italianate style, and became well-known particularly because many of his paintings were reproduced as prints. In 1669 the Elzevier publishing house put out a French Bible, for which they enlisted popular artists to illustrate a frontispiece and maps. The La Sainte Bible appears to have been planned at least a decade before its publication, and was to include 5 maps to illustrate several stories. Hackios, Lugd. Batav. Roterodami, 1669. Octavos, 3 volumes; VG; bound in full contemporary vellum, faded ink lettering to spines; some soiling to vellum; bookplate to front pastedown of each volume; each volume with an engraved title page, all dated 1669, title page of volume 1 says 1669, 2 and 3 state 1668; stain to bottom of text bloc of volume 1, does not impact any text; interiors clean; printer's mark with an eagle and the motto 'MOVENDO' on each title page; text in Latin with Greek references; shelved case 3. The Natural History (Latin: Naturalis Historia) is a book about the whole of the natural world in Latin by Pliny the Elder, a Roman author and naval commander who died in 79 AD. It is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman Empire to the modern day and purports to cover all ancient knowledge. The work's subject area is thus not limited to what is today understood by natural history; Pliny himself defines his scope as "the natural world, or life". It is encyclopedic in scope, but its structure is not like that of a modern encyclopedia. The work is divided into 37 books, organised into ten volumes. These cover topics including astronomy, mathematics, geography, ethnography, anthropology, human physiology, zoology, botany, agriculture, horticulture, pharmacology, mining, mineralogy, sculpture, painting, and precious stones. The work was one of the first classical manuscripts to be printed, at Venice in 1469 by Johann and Wendelin of Speyer. [wikipedia]; Shelved Dupont Bookstore. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Edmund Castell
Thomas Roycroft, 1669. First edition, 2 parts in 1; folio, title page in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece by William Faithorne, text primarily in triple column and printed in Roman, Italic, Hebrew and a variety of other exotic fonts, pp. [8] & 4008 columns (this copy's pagination identical to variant B in ESTC); in this copy column 1108 is repeated; collated as in ESTC: a-b² [chi]1(=*F2?) *A-*E² *F1 A-Z² 2A-4L 4M²; 4N-5E² 5F-9C; ²A-3B² (the terminal Lexicon Orientale in this copy is misbound after 3B2, as often); full contemporary calf recently rebacked, red morocco label on spine; corners bumped and showing; covers worn, a few old institutional rubberstamps, but generally a good, sound copy, with occasional early annotations in ink and pencil throughout. One of the great scholastic undertakings of the 17th century, under squalid and heart-wrenching conditions. The work was 18 years in the making and the story of its compilation is fraught with tales of unremitting toil, constant vigils, bodily suffering, loss of fortune, orphaned children, prison terms and fire (see DNB for the long, sad tale surrounding Castell and his life-long labor). Brian Walton, in his Preface to the great London Polyglot Bible of 1657 (also printed by Roycroft -- "conspicuous among printers who did credit to their profession in the 17th century"), cites Castell as being especially responsible for the Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions. While Castell's work "marks an epoch in Semitic scholarship. .. it met with a deplorably cold welcome in England. .. At the time of his dea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely Rare 1669 First English Language Edition Of "An Embassy from the East-India Company By Johan Nieuhof The First Book About The Real China Many Illustrations LAST PRICE REDUCTION! OUR GALLERY IS CLOSING IN 2019 ! A rare 1669 first English language edition of An Embassy from the East-India Company by Dutch author and explorer Johan Nieuhof, originally published in Dutch in 1665. Due to its tremendous success, several other editions were published that were heavily edited apparently for commercial reasons. It was then translated into French, German, Latin and English in 1665, 1666, 1668, and 1669 respectively. While the other versions were published by Van Meurs, the English version was published and translated by John Ogilby. The book, split into two parts and an appendix, contains notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made while he was a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer's embassy to the emperor of China. It also contains a written account of the trip and 149 illustrations. The first part of the work contains details of the entire journey from Canton to Peking and back while the second part is a general overview of China. This book was important to the time because it was a unique source about China and its practices. The images were an important aspect of the book because they more accurately depicted the people of China versus the fantastical European illustrations from the past … [Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An impressive tome from the famous 1669 Elzevier Holy Bible. This volume is the first volume which includes the Old Testament books through Song of Songs. According to Willems, "This Bible could rightly be considered the most beautiful monumental work of Elzevierian typography." This printing was Des Marets' annotated edition of the French Geneva version. Darlow & Moule note that editors, S and H des Marets took the text of Hayes' 1652 Paris edition. It also features incredible folding maps of the Holy Land and Jerusalem, in fact, the maps alone from this tome are considered extremely valuable and desirable. [Attributes: First Edition]

Extremely Rare 1669 First English Language Edition Of "An Embassy from the East-India Company By Johan Nieuhof The First Book About The Real China Many Illustrations LAST PRICE REDUCTION! The images were an important aspect of the book because they more accurately depicted the people of China versus the fantastical European illustrations from the past. Possibly the first work in China in English, this rare treatise on the supposed original language spoken by Adam and Eve, by the architect John Webb, a pupil of Inigo Jones. FIRST EDITION, second issue (see below) of "the most important contribution to circulatory physiology after William Harvey's De motu cordis, published three years before Lower's birth. Nobel Laureate André Cournand considered Lower's book to be one of the most important texts in the history of physiology because of the nature of its observations, the rigor of its experimental design and demonstrations, and its simple and convincing form of presentation... "Lower entered medical practice in London in 1666 and continued experiments he had begun in Oxford on the motion and color of the blood and on transfusion. His observations on these subjects were summarized in Tractatus de corde. "Lower made important observations on the structure of cardiac muscle, the quantity of blood in the vascular system, the velocity of blood flow, and the effects of aeration of blood as it passed through the lungs. He was impressed by the complex arrangement of muscular fibers in the heart and felt their unique arrangement was responsible for the contraction of the ventricular cavities in systole that propelled blood into the vascular system. In a series of experiments performed with Robert Hooke, Lower showed that the red color of arterial blood was due to its contact with 'fresh air' in the lungs. His book also contained observations on the technique and safety of blood transfusion, a technique he pioneered" (W. Bruce Fye in Grolier One Hundred (Medicine). Folio atlas (460 by 290mm), title, 24 double-page engraved charts, and one full-page chart, contemporary speckled calf, with fillet border, spine in six compartments separated by raised bands, rubbed. The third book (‘Straets-boeck') of Pieter Goos's ‘Lighting Colom' (‘Zeespiegel'), which details the Mediterranean navigation. This ‘Straets-boeck' – or ‘Straights Book', so named after the Straits of Gibraltar – was first published by Goos with Dutch text in 1662 and, in that same year, with a different title page as part III of the ‘Zee-Spieghel'. The charts in the work were newly engraved by Goos, but the text was borrowed from Jacobsz Lootsman's ‘Straets-boeck' of 1648. In the contents the author explains the differences between the handling of the compass by the Dutch and Italians, and that the information in this work is adapted to Dutch use. He also explains why the charts have no degrees of latitude, as well as the use of the backstaff. The list with “The height of Som Places in the Midle-land Sea” contains additions and corrections in manuscript. Rare. We are only able to trace one example – the present copy – coming up for sale in the past 35 years. Koeman, IV, Goos 45; Wing, C-5403dA.

SINIBALDI, Giovanni Benedetto
1669 1st ed Geneanthropeia Human Sexuality Bizarre Medicine Occult Sinibaldi Giovanni Benedetto Sinibaldi was a 17th-century physician and progressive thinking on human sexuality and reproduction. He is chiefly remembered for his work ‘Geneanthropeia’ or ‘Rare Varieties, The Cabinet of Venus Unlocked’. This work is an extremely rare medical treatise that focuses on sexual intercourse, and human production. Sinibaldi discussed many controversial topics in ‘Geneanthropeiae’ such as sex addiction, minors engaging in sex, and ways to identify virgins. While trying to arouse and entice his readers, Sinibaldi mentions that children should not have to try to be sneaky to engage in sex at a young age, in fact parents should encourage it! (Knowles, p.928). He also offers techniques for different positions of coitus, even though he was rather ignorant to the female reproductive system. He also discusses the effects of minerals, plants, and animals on virgin women – he claims that virgins cannot endure the smell of Lilies and that honeybees will seek out sexually active persons. The five folding plates illustrate Malpighi's microscopic investigations of the brain and tongue. Malpighi's name is celebrated in several eponymous anatomical structures in the kidney, spleen, skin, and lungs. It is in the epistle on the tongue that he described the mucosal layer beneath the epidermis which is now called the Malpighian layer. In "De omento, pinguedine, et adiposis ductibus," Malpighi reported his observation of the red blood corpuscles. Unfortunately he mistook them for globules of fat passing into the blood and it wasn't until 1674 that Leeuwenhoek gave the first accurate description of the erythrocytes." Heirs of Hippocrates Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) Anatomist, embryologist, physiologist, and microscopist, Malpighi was not only instrumental in the development of embryology and histology but was also one of the greatest microscopic anatomists. He began his studies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely Rare 1669 First English Language Edition Of "An Embassy from the East-India Company By Johan Nieuhof The First Book About The Real China Many Illustrations LAST PRICE REDUCTION! The images were an important aspect of the book because they more accurately depicted the people of China versus the fantastical European illustrations from the past. WEBB, John.
London: for Nath. Brook, 1669. Octavo (169 x 105 mm). Modern half calf to style, morocco label, marbled sides. Foxe Point bookplate. A couple of early leaves creased and dusty at upper outer corner where turned down as placemarkers, a very good copy. Large folding engraved map of China, title printed in red and black. With the errata leaf p3 at end but without final blank. First edition, an influential treatise proposing Chinese as the original language, and one of the earliest books in English discussing Chinese culture in any depth. The architect John Webb, a pupil of Inigo Jones, argued that Noah could be identified with the legendary king Yao; that he had withdrawn from the tribes whose languages were confounded at Babel long before that point in biblical history, and that he had built the Ark in China, landed it there, and bequeathed to China the language spoken by Adam, preserved to Webb's day in modern China as the language of the court. Webb's view of Chinese script was strongly influenced by not only Semedo but also the Jesuit polymath and hermeticist Athanasius Kircher. Webb was also inspired by John Wilkins's recent publication on artificial language, arguing that Wilkins, whether knowingly or not, had based the idea of his artificial language on Chinese. Webb's proposed harmonisation of world history was taken seriously by many; his work was a major spur to the construction of English sinology in the later decades of the 17th century. The work precedes by almost two decades the Paris Jesuit edition of Confucius, published in 1687. The rare folding map of China, … [Click Below for Full Description]
