(BINDINGS - ANDREOLI-ROSPIGLIOSI). [BERNIERES-LOUVIGNY, JEAN DE]
Venetia [Venice]: Combi & LaNou, 1669. This is a lovely example of the celebrated work produced in the heyday of the bindery operated by Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli, dubbed the "Rospigliosi Bindery" by Hobson because it was the favored atelier of Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi (1600-69), later Pope Clement IX. In addition to work done for Rospigliosi and other princes of the Church, the Andreolis bound books for merchant princes like the Medici and Borghese, and for real royalty, notably Queen Christina of Sweden, who called on them to bind books for the library she created at her Roman palazzo. Our volumes were bound for a couple from two prominent Florentine families: the Machiavelli, who gave us the great political philosopher Niccolò, and the Bacelli, a family of skilled stonemasons that achieved sufficient prosperity and social position to receive a coat of arms in the 16th century. Active from about 1630 until the early years of the 18th century, the bindery was at its zenith of production and design in the 1650s through the 1680s. Their symmetrically arranged, tasteful designs featured much ornate tooling and repetition of small stamps. Bindings done for a noble or ecclesiastical client would often have, as here, the patron's coat of arms at center. In 1665, Gregorio was given a lifetime appointment as binder to the Vatican Library. The two works in this volume, both translated from the French, are "The Interior Christian" by the mystic Jean de Bernieres-Louvigny (1602-59) and "Think About It" ["Pensez-y-bien"] by Jesuit Paul de Barry (1587-1661), both of which emph … [Click Below for Full Description]

Glauber, Johann Rudolph.
Amsterdam Janssonius, 1669. (15 x 9 cm). 60 (4w) S. Rückenbroschur in moderner Leinwand-Kassette. Einzige Ausgabe. - Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig bzw. gebräunt, sonst wohlerhalten. - VD17 1:641041W; Gugel 28; Dünnhaupt 31; Duveen 259; Rosenthal BMP 368; Neu 1653; Krivatsy 4778; Brüning 2196 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FRUGONI Francesco Fulvio.
Ex Typographia Combi, & La Noù, 1669. Prima edizione. Opera dedicata al Doge Domenico Contarini. Testo latino. Cm.14,4x7,4. Pg.288. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena semirigida, con titoli manoscritti al dorso. Piatto posteriore brunito, con minimo strappo. Tagli spruzzati. Marca calcografica al frontespizio raffigurante "La Minerva". Cartigli e capilettera incisi. Milton, John
Simmons, 1669. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. This one of the original 1,200 first edition copies printed in 1667 by the publisher Simmons. Simmons issued the first edition over a few years, adding a different title page from time to time. By the time the 1200 copies of the first run had sold out, seven different variations of the title page has been produced, bearing dates of 1667, 1668 and 1669. There is no known relationship between when a given copy of the TEXT itself was printed, and the title page it bears. Thus, the first printed copy of the 1200 copies could just as easily have a 1669 title page as one dated 1667 or 1668. It was just a matter of what copy the publisher pulled out of the original pile, and attached a title page. In addition, the bibliographer Hugh Amory argued convincingly that the 1668 title page was probably issued earlier than the one bearing the date 1667. In this case the title page bears the full name of the author and the year 1669. In addition, this copy includes the important preliminary matter that Milton added during 1668 after the first copies were issued. These include "The Argument," in which Milton describes the program of each of the ten books, and "The Verse," in which Milton defends his choice of using blank verse rather than rhyme. Very good condition, in leather binding and gold gilt-edged pages, housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition]

BLOME RICHARD
Londra, 1669. AIncisione in rame, mm 400x528, dipinta a mano d'epoca. Restauri e piccole mancanze e rinforzi.Copper engraving, mm 400x528, original color. Old color example of Blome's scarce world map embellished with decorative features and a dedication to Charles II. Blome's map breaks from both the Dutch tradition of Baroque embellishment and the French style of sparse surroundings of the hemispheres, creating a unique combination of decorative embellishment and symbols of the Britsh Empire, making it a visually unique and striking world map. The engraving work is probably attributable to Francis Lamb, although Shirley surmised that Wenceslaus Hollar or Thomas Burnford may also have been the engraver.Still a good and decorative example but with reinforcements and restorations to lacks of paper and tears. Gilt edge.Size 4 3/4 by 7 3/4"Pliny the Elder (born Gaius Plinius Secundus, AD 23-79) was a Roman author, a naturalist and natural philosopher, a naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and a friend of emperor Vespasian.Pliny wrote the encyclopedic Naturalis Historia (Natural History), which became an editorial model for encyclopedias. He spent most of his spare time studying, writing, and investigating natural and geographic phenomena in the field. His nephew, Pliny the Younger, wrote of him in a letter to the historian Tacitus:For my part I deem those blessed to whom, by favour of the gods, it has been granted either to do what is worth writing of, or to write what is worth reading; above measure blessed those on whom both gifts have been conferred. In the latter number will be my uncle, by virtue of his own and of your compositions.Pliny the Younger refers to Tacitus's reliance upon his uncle's book, the History of the German Wars.Pliny the Elder died in AD 79 in Stabiae while attempting the rescue of a friend and his family by ship from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which had already destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The wind caused by the sixth and largest pyroclastic surge of the volcano's eruption did not allow his ship to leave port, and Pliny probably died during that event. 1669. One of Sheppard's Great Reforming Treatises on Real Property Sheppard, William [fl. 1660]. The Law of Common Assurances, Touching Deeds in General: Viz. Feoffments. Gifts. Grants. Leases. With Two Alphabetical Tables. London: Printed by John Streater, James Flesher, And Henry Twyford, 1669. [xvi], 898, [18] pp. Folio (11-1/2" x 7-1/4"). Recent quarter morocco over cloth, gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. A few nicks, negligible light rubbing to extremities. Light browning and occasional light foxing to text, light soiling, later library inkstamp and eighteenth-century owner signature and annotation to title page. * Only edition. Active in the Protectorate, where he was Cromwell's legal advisor, Sheppard aimed to reform English common law. Ahead of his time in many ways, many of his proposals anticipate changes that were adopted in the nineteenth century, especially in the Juridicature acts of 1875-78. Sheppard is best-known for his work on real property due to his landmark treatise the Touch-Stone of Common Assurances, which was first published in 1648, and, to a lesser extent, The President of Presidents, which was first published in 1655. His work in this field continued during the Restoration period with The Law of Common Assurances, a treatise that combined a synthesis of his Touch-Stone with updated material and The Practical Counsellor in the Law, a handbook published in 1671.
Containing the Exposition of Many Ancient, And Other Statutes; Whereof You May See the Particulars in a Table Following. London: Printed for A. Crooke, W. Leake, A. Roper, [et al.], 1669. [x], 745, [41] pp. Folio (11-3/4" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands to spine, early repairs to front board, later repair to foot of spine. A few minor nicks and scuffs to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, a few minor chips to board edges, corners bumped, hinges mended. Light toning to text, occasional (very) faint dampstaining to lower margins, edgewear and light soiling to title page. A handsome copy. ,000. * Second edition. The Second Part of the Institutes, an exposition of "many ancient and other statutes" including Magna Carta, was published by order of the House of Commons after the author's death. It is a landmark work because it offered a novel interpretation of Magna Carta. Reflecting contemporary struggles between the king and Parliament, Coke presented the charter as the ancient constitution of England, one that established the fundamental rights of Englishmen and placed royal power under the laws of the land. Perhaps the most famous section is Coke's commentary on the 29th chapter, in which he traced the origins of trial by jury and the right of habeas corpus. English Short-Title Catalogue R30266.

UGGLA, Arvid Hj.
[32] pp.First and only edition of a miniature book celebrating an extraordinary manuscript, the ca. 520 Codex Argenteus (Silver Codex), the earliest surviving manuscript of the four gospels in the ancient Germanic Gothic language, kept in a silver box that is a miniature facsimile (about 1/7 original size) of the chased silver binding made for the codex in Stockholm in 1669. In fact the Codex is the earliest sizable surviving manuscript of any kind in any Germanic language, so it forms an essential source for the history of languages in general far beyond its great importance as a record of the extinct Gothic language. In 2011 UNESCO added it to the Memory of the World register.Bishop Ulfilas or Wulfila (ca. 311-383), a Goth from Anatolia, but of Greek ancestry, and others working under him made the translation. Tradition credits Ulfias with inventing the script for his translation, though it certainly had antecedents. It was discovered in the 16th century in the Abbey of Werden in the Ruhr valley in western Germany and acquired by the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II in Prague. When Sweden occupied Prague in 1648 they brought it to the scholarly and devout Queen Christina in Stockholm. She secretly converted to Catholicism in 1652 and abdicated in 1654, when the codex was acquired by her Dutch librarian, Isaac Vossius, and his uncle Franciscus Junius began a scholarly study of it. In 1662 the Swedish chancellor Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie bought it from Vossius and in 1669, as chancellor to the Uppsala University as well, he donated it to the University, where it remain … [Click Below for Full Description]
