BEAULIEU, Augustin.
Amsterdam: Jan Rieuwertsz and Pieter Arentsz, 1669. Quarto, with eight engraved plates; bound in later period-style full calf, spine gilt with raised bands, ex libris of Saint Charles de Bourbon seminary on title;. First Dutch edition, and rare. This is the only separate appearance and the only illustrated edition of Beaulieu's account of his travels for the fledgling French "Compagnie des Indes Orientales".Beaulieu was a French navigator and coloniser who was appointed in 1619 to command the so-called "Fleet of Montmorency". The three ships sailed to Madagascar and Banda Atjeh via the Cape of Good Hope, but the voyage was not entirely a success, with two of the ships captured by the Dutch, keen to preserve the rights of the VOC. Undaunted, Beaulieu still petitioned for Madagascar to become a roadhouse for voyages to the East Indies, but Richelieu prevaricated, fearing provoking the Dutch. Despite Beaulieu's repeated encouragement, over the following decades Madagascar saw only desultory settlement, much of it from privateers. It was only in 1665 - a few years before the publication of this account - that the first voyage of the Compagnie des Indes Orientales carried settlers to the island; suffering under impossibly harsh conditions, the settlement petered out soon after. These French incursions were not particularly liked by the Dutch, and so it is perhaps not surprising that this Dutch translation focuses on the mishaps and disasters that plagued Beaulieu's voyage (hence rampspoedige, or "catastrophic", in the title). Designed for the Dutch popular market, it was publishe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rara edizione originale di quest' opera fondamentale per la moderna geologia. Handsome, unstained copy with ample margins. ---- Hagen 2:208; Krivatsy 11599; Nissen ZBI 4052. RARE FIRST EDITION. Swammerdam's present work, which reached part 1 only, and a monograph on the mayfly are the only entomological works published by in his lifetime. However, as DSB explains, "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant . The 1669 Historia was devoted to the overthrow of the idea of metamorphosis . The idea of metamorphosis, which Swammerdam was so determined to refute, was that of a sudden and total change from one kind of creature to another, comparable to the alchemical transmutation of a base metal into gold." Swammerdam's main claim, anti-Aristotelian in nature was that "insects are no less perfect than higher animals, and are not really different in the their modes of development." Near Fine.

STENO, Nicolaus
1669. Engraved arms of the Grand Duke of Tuscany on title, a large folding engraved plate, & a folding sheet with descriptive letterpress. Title in red & black. 1 p.l., 78 pp., 1 leaf. 4to, modern panelled calf. Florence: ex Typographia sub signo Stellae, 1669. First edition of a fundamental work for the modern sciences of geology, crystallography, and palaeontology. In this book, Steno "described the composition of the earth's crust in Tuscany and a famous diagram in his book shows six successive types of stratification: the first attempt ever made to represent geological sections. This was a sequence which he believed would be found all over the world. He explained the true origin of fossils found in the earth as being remains of once living things and he discriminated between the volcanic, chemical and mechanical modes of the origin of the rocks. He was the first clearly to recognize that the strata of the earth's crust contain the records of a chronological sequence of events from which the history of the earth can be reconstructed. PERRAULT, Claude]
Fine woodcut vignette on title & five fine folding engraved plates. 120 pp. 4to, fine antique calf, spine nicely gilt. [Paris: F. Leonard, 1669]. First edition of the second publication of the "Parisians," a famous group of anatomists in Paris; their publications mark the beginnings of modern comparative anatomy. "The constitution of the French Academy of Science in 1666 established a school of morphology to which the modern development of comparative anatomy may be directly traced. The longevity of the early Parisian anatomists was remarkable.Their leader was the veteran Claude Perrault.it was due mainly to his influence that a number of the early members of the French Academy, who are often conveniently referred to in the literature of the period as the 'Parisians', laid the foundations of our modern knowledge of comparative anatomy."-Cole, A History of Comparative Anatomy, pp. 393-95 (& see pp. 393-425). The leading members of the "Parisians" were, beside Perrault, Guichard Joseph Duverney, Jean Pecquet, Moyse Charas, and Philippe de la Hire. "In June 1667 the Academy was invited to dissect a thresher shark and a lion which had died at the royal menagerie. The reports on these dissections were the first of a long series of anatomical descriptions, which ultimately included those of twenty-five species of mammals, seventeen birds, five reptiles, one amphibian, and one fish. "Although some of the discoveries on which the Parisians most prided themselves - including the nictitating membrane that Perrault first observed in a cassowary, the external lobation of the kidneys in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engraved arms of the Grand Duke of Tuscany on title, a large folding engraved plate, & a folding sheet with descriptive letterpress (joined together in this copy). Title printed in red & black. 1 p.l., 78 pp., 1 leaf of errata. 4to, orig. semi-stiff boards (stamp bleached out on blank portion of title), entirely uncut. Florence: ex Typographia sub signo Stellae, 1669. First edition, and a fine presentation copy bound in the original limp boards, of a fundamental work for the modern sciences of geology, crystallography, and paleontology. He attempted to find the principles of stratigraphy…He deduced that these changes in the original position of the strata are the real causes of the unevenness of the earth's surface. This was in direct contradiction to the accepted belief that mountains had existed ever since the beginning of things or had simply grown."-Printing & the Mind of Man 151. EVELYN, JOHN.
[London:] In the Savoy, Printed for Henry Herringman, 1669. First edition. Octavo, contemporary blind-ruled calf, later gilt lettering. A work inspired by the messianic assertions of Sabbatai Zevi (1626-76), news of which quickly spread from the Middle East to Europe. Half the text is dedicated to the Zevi story and was probably written by Paul Rycaut, English consul in Turkey, who feared publishing it under his own name. Evelyn functioned as an editor and translator and combined the Zevi tale with the accounts of other false prophets and pretenders to miracles. Bookplate of Robert S. Pirie on the front free endpaper, with his note that this was purchased in 1962. Edges somewhat rubbed; very good copy.

Timothy Edwards
An exceptionally rare and important complete 11pp. MSs sermon and 'relations; by Timothy Edwards (1669-1758), father of Jonathan Edwards and an important puritan colonial and revivalist New England divine. The present manuscript is of significant historical importance for a great variety of reasons. Dating from 1720-25 it is an exceptionally early American mss by a central public figure. The confessions at the end, of five congregants, appear to relate to their confessions prior to receiving the Lord's Supper and probably reflect their conversions during the season of revival under Edwards in 1725, at which time he seems to have revisited the sermon. The sermon itself is on an important theme and must certainly be thought to have some bearing on the mind of his son, Jonathan. The manuscript is on record, both as image file and with historical introduction, footnotes, and complete transcription, with the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale. A CD containing the digital file, historical introduction, and verbatim transcription accompanies the MSs.

sub Signo Stellae, 1669. 4° (225x169 mm). [4] (one blank and one with title printed on recto in red and black with engraved vignette), 78 pp., [2] (errata and one blank leaf). One folding plate with engraved diagram and explanatory letterpress. Woodcut head- and tailpieces, decorative initials. Contemporary vellum. A tall copy with a stain at the corner of title. First edition of this ?great work [..] which outlines the principles of modern geology? (DSB), by the Danish anatomist Niels Stensen, at the time court physician at Florence and dedicated to the Duke of Tuscany. In this work, a landmark of the geology and based on data collected in the Arno Valley, Steno sought to describe the anatomy of the earth and to explain the entire system of nature stratum super stratum. Steno?s contributions to plate tectonic theory and to stratigraphy is based on his theory that layers or strata of the earth, which are not horizontal, must have been tilted or folded by a force, such as an earthquake, after they formed. His principle of superposition also applied to other geologic events on the surface, such as lava flows and ash layers from volcanic eruptions. ?Steno is traditionally credited with establishing one of the major principles of stratigraphy: the principle of superposition. This is simply the idea that for the layers of sediments found in the earth?s crust the lower one were deposited first and are older that the ones that lie above them. This is a simple idea (or may appear to us to be so), and we cannot be sure that Steno was the first to hold or propound it. But the Prodrom … [Click Below for Full Description]
