First edition of a work which is considered, together with the one by Capriglia, the best on clocks in 17th century Italy. Landwehr, Emblem Books Low Countries 68. Original and only edition of a rare emblem book produced to welcome count Wirich Philipp Laurens von Daun, Fürst of Tiano (1669-1741), as the new Stadholder of the Southern Netherlands. Wirich Daun, member of a famous Austrian military and noble family, high commander (later field marshal) in the Austrian army during the Spanish Succession Wars, was appointed Vice-Roy of Naples in 1713 and Stadholder (Governor-General) of the Austrian Southern Netherlands in 1725. The text is written by the Neo-Latin poet Petrus vander Borcht (1676-1739), a canon of the Coudenberg monastery; the circular emblems are engraved by his brother, Johannes Carolus vander Borcht who makes himself known as the Master of the Imperial Mint at Brussels. The engraved title is a chronogram, with the date "1725". Extra are 4 leaves with an extensive handwritten description of the work in French. Fine copy.

Erste Ausgabe dieses sehr seltenen Dokumentes zur frühen deutschen Kolonialbestrebung; hier mit der meist fehlenden Karte. - Der aus Speyer stammende Ökonom und Alchemist Becher (1635-1682) gilt als der mit Abstand bedeutendste deutsche Merkantilist. Er wurde von Friedrich Casimir von Hanau-Münzenberg beauftragt, mit der Westindischen Kompagnie der Niederlande Verhandlungen über den Landkauf zur Gründung einer hanauisch-indischen Kolonie in Südamerika (im Bereich des heutigen Guyana) zu führen. Am 18. Juli 1669 wurde der Vertrag in Hanau abgeschlossen und gefeiert. Vari schemi numerici e molte figure xilografiche con carri, porte, botti, tini, torri, disegni geometrici ecc... opera assai celebre che per oltre 200 anni è stata il testo base di facile consultazione sui segreti della matematica, geometria, algebra e del far di conto. Smith afferma che il Feliciano ha redatto un manuale più facile e agevole pur avendo attinto all'opera del Borgo e del Pacioli. Secondo Riccardi le aggiunte sarebbero opera del celebre Bernardino Baldi. Dato l'uso pratico ben rare sono le copie in buono stato e ben complete come la nostra. Lieve menda all'angolino alto della legatuyra, peraltro esemplare molto bello, nitido e a grandi margini. * Riccardi II 22/23; * Honeyman IV 1288; * Michel-Michel III 29; Questa nostra rara edizione manca a : Choix, Sotheran, Autori italiani del 600, BM.STC.
