Giovanni Battista FALDA (Valduggia, Novara, 1643; Rome, 1678)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Compagnie des Indes]
Paris, 1669. 7pp. Small quarto. Modern boards, leather label. Light soiling around the edges. Very good. A variant issue, with a slightly different title, of this important edict, which allows members of the nobility to trade by sea without foregoing any of their privileges. Previously, their activities had been circumscribed by ordinances preventing their entering commerce. Apparently a catalyst for this edict was the formation of the Compagnie des Indes in 1664, which is specifically mentioned in the text. A note on the last page states that this copy was collated against the King's Ministry copy. OCLC locates only one copy, at the University of Oxford. Rare. 1669. In 4to; 2cc.n.nn., pp.467, 1n.n. BEAULIEU, Augustin.
Amsterdam: Jan Rieuwertsz and Pieter Arentsz, 1669. Quarto, with eight engraved plates; bound in later period-style full calf, spine gilt with raised bands, ex libris of Saint Charles de Bourbon seminary on title;. First Dutch edition, and rare. This is the only separate appearance and the only illustrated edition of Beaulieu's account of his travels for the fledgling French "Compagnie des Indes Orientales".Beaulieu was a French navigator and coloniser who was appointed in 1619 to command the so-called "Fleet of Montmorency". The three ships sailed to Madagascar and Banda Atjeh via the Cape of Good Hope, but the voyage was not entirely a success, with two of the ships captured by the Dutch, keen to preserve the rights of the VOC. Undaunted, Beaulieu still petitioned for Madagascar to become a roadhouse for voyages to the East Indies, but Richelieu prevaricated, fearing provoking the Dutch. Despite Beaulieu's repeated encouragement, over the following decades Madagascar saw only desultory settlement, much of it from privateers. It was only in 1665 - a few years before the publication of this account - that the first voyage of the Compagnie des Indes Orientales carried settlers to the island; suffering under impossibly harsh conditions, the settlement petered out soon after. These French incursions were not particularly liked by the Dutch, and so it is perhaps not surprising that this Dutch translation focuses on the mishaps and disasters that plagued Beaulieu's voyage (hence rampspoedige, or "catastrophic", in the title). Designed for the Dutch popular market, it was publishe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Utrecht: Meinardus van Dreunen, 1669. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 2 parts in one volume. 4to (200 x 153 mm). [28], 168; 48 pp., 13 engraved plates; 1 folding letterpress table. Contemporary full vellum, spine lettered in ink (covers soiled, upper corners bumped), blue-sprinkled edges. Very light browning and occasional spotting to text, plates browned stronger as usual due to different type of paper used. Bookplate pasted over old stamp in blank area on title verso. Handsome, unstained copy with ample margins. ---- Hagen 2:208; Krivatsy 11599; Nissen ZBI 4052. RARE FIRST EDITION. Swammerdam's present work, which reached part 1 only, and a monograph on the mayfly are the only entomological works published by in his lifetime. However, as DSB explains, "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant . The 1669 Historia was devoted to the overthrow of the idea of metamorphosis . The idea of metamorphosis, which Swammerdam was so determined to refute, was that of a sudden and total change from one kind of creature to another, comparable to the alchemical transmutation of a base metal into gold." Swammerdam's main claim, anti-Aristotelian in nature was that "insects are no less perfect than higher animals, and are not really different in the their modes of development." Near Fine.
