GROENEWEGEN VAN DER MADE, S.
Amstelædami, Apud Joannem Janssonium à Waesberge, 1669. Title-page in red and black and with a charming vignette. Two parts in one volume, continuously paginated (44), 932 (misnumbered 928) pp. 4to. Contemporary blindstamped vellum. Dekkers p. 68. Third edition. Simon Groenewegen van der Made was born in Delft in 1613. After studies at Leyden he practised at the bar and later became secretary of the town of Delft, where he died in 1652. He edited the Inleidinge tot de Hollandsche Rechtsgeleerdheid of Hugo Grotius with annotations of his own (Dordrecht 1644 and later editions) and wrote Tractatus de legibus abrogatis et inusitatis in Hollandia vicinisque regionibus which was first published at Leyden in 1649. The Tractatus discusses what parts of the Corpus juris had been abrogated in Holland and became an important and influential work. It is amongst the authorities listed by Hahlo and Kahn in their chapter on the Sources of South African Law. Groenewegen endeavoured to connect the practice of law and academical law. This work, in fact a forerunner in scholarly law practice, was often reprinted.

Engraved general title (to the 1666 edition), additional title in red and black, and separate title for each book (and for part two of book four). With 4 folding maps all dated 1663, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands; a clean, bright copy. Fourth edition published by Anne Seile, first printed in 1652 by Henry Seile. This work, an expansion of Heylyn's popular Microcosmos, contains an impressive store of information in it's attempt to describe in meticulous detail every aspect of the known world at the time. The allegorical engraved title-page shows the creation of the world, the four continents symbolized three times by four women, four men, and four animals. After a general introduction to geography, the first two books treat the history and geography of Europe, the third with Asia, and the fourth book is divided between Africa in part one and America in part two. It includes discussions on geography, climate, customs, achievements, politics, and belief systems of people in every country. It is one of the earliest printed works to describe Australia, California, Terra del Fuego, and other territories in the new world and includes descriptions of the Arctic, Antarctica and the fabled Northwest Passage. Heylyn (1600-1662) was already elected a fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford at the age of eighteen, where he taught historical geography. SANSON, Nicholas, and Guillaume SANSON (d. 1703)
Paris: Chez Pierre Mariette, 1669. Copper-engraved map, period hand colouring in outline. The most important French map of North America of its generation, produced by the country's most esteemed family of cartographers. This very influential map was the official successor to Nicolas Sanson's 1650 map of North America. When Nicolas Sanson, regarded as the father of the renaissance of cartography under Louis XIV, died in July, 1667, he left his flourishing business in the care of his eldest son Guillaume. The younger Sanson continued his father's partnership with the Mariette family, who were prominent Parisian printers. Guillame was determined to publish a new, updated edition of his father's Cartes Generales de toutes parties du Monde, the first French general atlas, originally published in 1657. The map of North America that appeared in the atlas, although masterful, was now considered to be geographically outdated. The present map, which appeared in the second edition of the atlas, featured updated toponymy, and is geographically based on Nicolas Sanson's wall map of 1666 (of which only two copies survive). While California is shown to be an island, in line with popular perception, unlike the map from 1650, it no longer attempts to build a geographical mythology in the place of the Pacific Northwest, which was then totally unknown. Appropriately the magnificent baroque title cartouche, which features swags and ribbons held aloft by putti, has been placed to fill this enigmatic space. Cartographically the map appears to be based on Sanson's maps of "Le Can … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tedeschi, 5 incisioni in legno nel testo raffiguranti diagrammi ed esperimenti di ottica; legatura settecentesca in mezza pelle, tassello con titolo in oro e filetti in oro al dorso (minimi restauri). Buon esemplare. Prima edizione del più importante contributo di Benedetto Castelli agli studi di ottica; l'edizione include inoltre due lettere inedite a Galileo (27 giugno 1637 e 2 agosto 1638, pp. 47 - 79) nelle quali l'autore discute del calore, sulla base dei propri esperimenti sull'assorbimento e la trasmissione di calore da parte di oggetti bianchi e neri: "more celebrated is Castelli's discussion of heat in a series of letters to Galileo (1637 - 1638) and particularly his experiments with the absorption of radiant and transmitted heat by black and white objects... [In these two letters] the pursuit of experimental science is even more clearly described than in Galileo's work on bodies in water" (DSB). Nel trattato, alle pp. 1 - 37, Castelli si occupa della percezione del movimento, di illusioni ottiche, dell'uso di lenti specifiche nei telescopi, della camera oscura: "Castelli optical investigations were continued in a treatise sent to Giovanni Ciampoli in 1639 and published posthumously in 1669 [pp. 1 - 37]; with four interesting woodcuts. Included are many observations and conclusions with respect to the persistence of optical images, by which Castelli explained the perception of motion, the illusion of forked tongues in serpents, and other phenomena. Il primo (pp. 1 - 37) si occupa di fenomeni della vista: spiega la percezione del movimento ed i motivi di molte illusioni ottiche, parla della camera oscura, l'inversione delle immagini sulla retina, la cataratta ecc. Sono anche particolarmente interessanti le Due lettere al Galileo (pp.47 - 79) in cui espone le sue esperienze sulla trasmissione del calore. E' sorprendente che questi notevoli testi non siano mai stati ristampati! Riccardi I, 291. Gamba 1864. DSB II, 115. Frankfurt, Johann Georg Schiele, 1669. – Exlibris Breitenbauch.
