[In these two letters] the pursuit of experimental science is even more clearly described than in Galileo's work on bodies in water" (DSB). Nel trattato, alle pp. 1 - 37, Castelli si occupa della percezione del movimento, di illusioni ottiche, dell'uso di lenti specifiche nei telescopi, della camera oscura: "Castelli optical investigations were continued in a treatise sent to Giovanni Ciampoli in 1639 and published posthumously in 1669 [pp. 1 - 37]; with four interesting woodcuts. Included are many observations and conclusions with respect to the persistence of optical images, by which Castelli explained the perception of motion, the illusion of forked tongues in serpents, and other phenomena. Sandys, Georges.
Frankfurt, Johann Georg Schiele, 1669. – Exlibris Breitenbauch. OLEARIUS, ADAM; author: DAVIES, JOHN; translator:
John Starkey and Thomas Basset c.1669, London. Edition : The second corrected edition in English from the f, Contemporary brown calf boards, expertly rebacked to match boards; spine with five raised bands, gilt lettered title on red morocco label on two; compartments woth horizontal copper ruling and ornamental motifs at centre; endpapers renewed., The first book details the trip of Germany?s ambassadors to Persia in 1633, backed by the Duke of Holstein. This account was first published in 1647 by Olearius, the German scholar and secretary to the ambassador, the latter of whom was charged with establishing an overland trade route with Persia. A first embassy travelled to Russia in 1633-34 to secure a right of passage through the Czar's realms. The embassy to Persia itself was sent in 1635. Although a commercial failure, much valuable information was gathered by Olearius and published in this account. While the ambassadors stayed in Persia, Mandelslo, whom the second title concerns, went on to India, traveling from Ormuz in 1638. He eventually left for Lahore. He then traveled on to Ceylon and Goa. His account includes fascinating details of life of what was then the exotic Mogul empire and also an engaging chapter on China, which includes a decorative map., Size : large quarto (314 x198mm), Illustrations complete with frontispiece, headpieces, rubricated initials, 10 full, double-page or larger folded maps and plates, as well as 1 half-page print of characters; they are located at work I: pp. 30, 44, 76, 95, 112, 142, 144, 265, 288; work II: p. 12 , Volume : Two parts in on … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 4to; 2cc.n.nn., pp.467, 1n.n.
Sea chart of the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, including the peninsula. Pieter was the son of Abraham Goos, cartographer and engraver; he enlarged his father's business and became one of the most famous engraver of sea charts in Amsterdam of the XVII century. Like Colom, Doncker and Jacobsz, he published a sea atlas, the Zee-Spiegel, deriving his work from the plates he was given by Jacobsz. The atlas has been then reissued in different editions and languages, and it was very famous among its contemporaries. Apart from publishing his Zee-Spiegel in the classical part I and II (Europe and Atlantic Coast … [Click Below for Full Description]

LETI, GREGORIO.
London Printed by John Starkey 1669 - 2 parts in one volume,8vo, pp [10], 158; [4], 169, [3], with engraved portrait frontispiece of Alexander the Seventh, separate title page to the second part, bound in contemporary calf, sometime rebacked, the leather of the spine now well-worn and chipped with joints cracked but holding, the upper one re-inforced, small corner torn from title of second part with loss of a couple of letters and a numeral, early penstrokes on portrait verso, minor faults and signs of use else in good state, FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, translated from Leti's Italian original by William Agionby. This title is one of a series of satires and attacks upon the Papacy by Leti, and all our quite scarce in their English translations. The word 'nepotism' of course derives from the Papal habit of granting special status to nephews, as detailed here. ESTC reports at least 2 issues of this title page and the present copy, perhaps uniquely, has both, one with long title and one with short title, an interesting survival. Gebonden in perkament, (42)+650 pag., geillustreerd. C1030."Rotterdam Bibliopolis, pag. 126, nr. 170; Haitsma Mulier/van der Lem 228 a; Fruin, Verspr. Geschr. VII, pag. 470 e.v. [Click Below for Full Description]
