Legatura coeva in piena pergamena semirigida, con titoli manoscritti al dorso. Piatto posteriore brunito, con minimo strappo. Tagli spruzzati. Marca calcografica al frontespizio raffigurante "La Minerva". Cartigli e capilettera incisi.
LOWER, RICHARD. - [CHANGING OUR VIEW OF HEART AND BLOOD]
Elzevier, 1669. Small 8vo. Contemporary full vellum. Old bookplate removed from inside of front board. Slight discolouration around "item" on title-page. A bit of brownspotting throughout. Last text leaf with small holes to outer margin, far from affecting text. All in all a very nice copy. (16), 232 pp + 7 engraved plates, the last of which with a neat reinforcement to folding. ¶ The rare second edition, printed merely a few months after the first (London, 1669), of Lower's groundbreaking main work, which immediately changed that the way the role of the heart and the lungs were perceived in the human body. The work is considered a milestone of medical history, as it provides one of the earliest accounts of blood transfusion, it established air as a necessity for life, and it was the first to demonstrate the scroll-like structure of the heart. The work is groundbreaking in giving the most accurate description of the structure of the heart to date, in exploring the structure and function of the veins and arteries, and in elucidating the mechanism of respiration. "It had been known since antiquity that venous and arterial blood differed in colour; Lower showed that this difference was caused purely by the admixture of air as the blood from the right side of the hear flowed through the lungs. He even showed that venous blood could be made to resemble arterial bllod by shaking a sample in air. He concluded that the change in colour was caused by the blood's absorption of air, which explained why air is necessary to life." (PMM 149). The present work furthermore contains a very … [Click Below for Full Description]

Castell, Edmund
London: Thomas Roycroft, 1669. First edition, 2 parts in 1; folio, title page in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece by William Faithorne, text primarily in triple column and printed in Roman, Italic, Hebrew and a variety of other exotic fonts, pp. [8] & 4008 columns (this copy's pagination identical to variant B in ESTC); in this copy column 1108 is repeated; collated as in ESTC: a-b² [chi]1(=*F2?) *A-*E² *F1 A-Z² 2A-4L 4M²; 4N-5E² 5F-9C ; ²A-3B² (the terminal Lexicon Orientale in this copy is misbound after 3B2, as often); full contemporary calf recently rebacked, red morocco label on spine; corners bumped and showing; covers worn, a few old institutional rubberstamps, but generally a good, sound copy, with occasional early annotations in ink and pencil throughout. One of the great scholastic undertakings of the 17th century, under squalid and heart-wrenching conditions. The work was 18 years in the making and the story of its compilation is fraught with tales of unremitting toil, constant vigils, bodily suffering, loss of fortune, orphaned children, prison terms and fire (see DNB for the long, sad tale surrounding Castell and his life-long labor). Brian Walton, in his Preface to the great London Polyglot Bible of 1657 (also printed by Roycroft -- "conspicuous among printers who did credit to their profession in the 17th century"), cites Castell as being especially responsible for the Samaritan, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopic versions. Description: From the large folio French Elzevier bible published in 1669. Ref: Shirley. Hoogsteder Mercury, 13/14, p.60Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Nicolaes Berchem' after 'I. Elzevier'. Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), who is not as well-known for his religious drawings as for he is for landscapes, but was a versatile artist. A prolific Dutch artist, Berchem often painted in the Italianate style, and became well-known particularly because many of his paintings were reproduced as prints. In 1669 the Elzevier publishing house put out a French Bible, for which they enlisted popular artists to illustrate a frontispiece and maps. The La Sainte Bible appears to have been planned at least a decade before its publication, and was to include 5 maps to illustrate several stories. Berchem worked with Jan de Visscher (1632-1692) and Abraham Blotelingh (1640-1690) as engravers of the five maps. He had worked previously with Nicolaes Visscher, so he as clear … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPEELMAN, Cornelis. -
Amsterdam, Marcus Doornick, (1669).4to. Modern boards. With woodcut on title-page. (24) pp.First edition. - South Celebes (Sulawesi) lay on the route that the Dutch took from Batavia to Amboyna. The sultan of Makassar (now Ujung Pandang), the leading representative of Islam in the region, was especially hostile to the Dutch missionary drive. He was also determined to protect Makassar's position as an international harbour for the spice trade, open to all nations. With the support of the English, Danes and Portuguese, he had long resisted the efforts of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to monopolize the spice trade. Alarmed by this development, Batavia in 1666 sent an expedition against Makassar led by Cornelis Speelman (1628-1684). He forced the sultan in 1669 to conclude a treaty which the Dutch, obtained a monopoly of Makassar's trade and succeeded in bringing South Celebes under Dutch supremacy with the help of the Bugis people who were being oppressed by the Macassarese . - Very rare.Landwehr, VOC, 238; Cat. GROENEWEGEN VAN DER MADE, S.
Amstelædami, Apud Joannem Janssonium à Waesberge, 1669. Title-page in red and black and with a charming vignette. Two parts in one volume, continuously paginated (44), 932 (misnumbered 928) pp. 4to. Contemporary blindstamped vellum. Dekkers p. 68. Third edition. Simon Groenewegen van der Made was born in Delft in 1613. After studies at Leyden he practised at the bar and later became secretary of the town of Delft, where he died in 1652. He edited the Inleidinge tot de Hollandsche Rechtsgeleerdheid of Hugo Grotius with annotations of his own (Dordrecht 1644 and later editions) and wrote Tractatus de legibus abrogatis et inusitatis in Hollandia vicinisque regionibus which was first published at Leyden in 1649. The Tractatus discusses what parts of the Corpus juris had been abrogated in Holland and became an important and influential work. It is amongst the authorities listed by Hahlo and Kahn in their chapter on the Sources of South African Law. Groenewegen endeavoured to connect the practice of law and academical law. This work, in fact a forerunner in scholarly law practice, was often reprinted.

STENO, Nicolaus
Engraved arms of the Grand Duke of Tuscany on title, a large folding engraved plate, & a folding sheet with descriptive letterpress. Title in red & black. 1 p.l., 78 pp., 1 leaf. 4to, modern panelled calf. Florence: ex Typographia sub signo Stellae, 1669. First edition of a fundamental work for the modern sciences of geology, crystallography, and palaeontology. In this book, Steno "described the composition of the earth's crust in Tuscany and a famous diagram in his book shows six successive types of stratification: the first attempt ever made to represent geological sections. This was a sequence which he believed would be found all over the world. He explained the true origin of fossils found in the earth as being remains of once living things and he discriminated between the volcanic, chemical and mechanical modes of the origin of the rocks. He was the first clearly to recognize that the strata of the earth's crust contain the records of a chronological sequence of events from which the history of the earth can be reconstructed. He attempted to find the principles of stratigraphy…He deduced that these changes in the original position of the strata are the real causes of the unevenness of the earth's surface. RABELAIS, François;
- Plan, Bibliographie rabelaisienne, n° 130.
