        Amerique Septentrionale

Paris: Chez Pierre Mariette, 1669. Copper-engraved map, in very good condition. The most important French map of North America of its generation, produced by the country's most esteemed family of cartographers This very influential map was the official successor to Nicolas Sanson's 1650 map of North America. When Nicolas Sanson, regarded as the father of the renaissance of cartography under Louis XIV, died in July, 1667, he left his flourishing business in the care of his eldest son Guillaume. The younger Sanson continued his father's partnership with the Mariette family, who were prominent Parisian printers. Guillame was determined to publish a new, updated edition of his father's Cartes Generales de toutes parties du Monde, the first French general atlas, originally published in 1657. The map of North America that appeared in the atlas, although masterful, was now considered to be geographically outdated. The present map, which appeared in the second edition of the atlas, featured updated toponymy, and is geographically based on Nicolas Sanson's wall map of 1666 (of which only two copies survive). While California is shown to be an island, in line with popular perception, unlike the map from 1650, it no longer attempts to build a geographical mythology in the place of the Pacific Northwest, which was then totally unknown. Appropriately the magnificent baroque title cartouche, which features swags and ribbons held aloft by putti, has been placed to fill this enigmatic space. Cartographically the map appears to be based on Sanson's maps of "Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France" and "Le Nouveau Mexique, et La Floride." Lake Erie is shown in a recognizable form and the entire Great Lakes network is shown in greater detail than his father's map, although the western lakes are still open-ended. On the East coast, Long Island is shown and the shape of the Outer Banks is improved. Several Indian tribes are identified in New Mexico where the R. del Norte (Rio Grande) mistakenly flows from an interior lake and empties into the Mar Vermeio ou Mer Rouge (Gulf of California). Iceland now appears in the Atlantic, as well as a bit of Britain. The map proved to be highly successful, and was sourced on numerous occasions by other mapmakers. The present copy is an example of Burden's first state of the map; a second state would be issued in 1690. Burden, The Mapping of North America I , 404; (first state) McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps , 669.4; McLaughlin, California as an Island, 45; Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America , 399; Tooley, California as an Island 8.

        AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE

Paris, 1669. In very good condition. The most important French map of North America of its generation, produced by the country's most esteemed family of cartographers. This very influential map was the official successor to Nicolas Sanson's 1650 map of North America. When Nicolas Sanson, regarded as the father of the renaissance of cartography under Louis XIV, died in July 1667, he left his flourishing business under the charge of his eldest son, Guillaume. The younger Sanson continued his father's partnership with the Mariette family, who were prominent Parisian printers. Guillaume was determined to publish a new, updated edition of his father's CARTES GENERALES DE TOUTES PARTIES DU MONDE, the first French general atlas, originally published in 1657. The map of North America that appeared in the atlas, although masterful, was now considered to be geographically outdated. The present map, which appeared in the second edition of the atlas, featured updated taxonomy, and is geographically based on Nicolas Sanson's wall map of 1666 (of which only two copies survive). While California is shown to be an island, in line with popular perception, unlike the map from 1650, it no longer attempts to build a geographical mythology in the place of the Pacific Northwest, which was then totally unknown. Appropriately, the magnificent baroque title cartouche, which features swags and ribbons held aloft by putti, has been placed to fill this enigmatic space. The map proved to be highly successful, and was used as a source on numerous occasions by future mapmakers.

Archiducatus Austriae Superioris Geographica Descriptio facta Anno 1667.,

(Augsburg, Melchior Küssel, 1669). - Kupferstichkarte von 12 Platten auf Leinwand des 19. Jahrhunderts aufgezogen und auf einem Holzstab des 19. Jahrhunderts montiert. Erste Ausgabe der ersten großen Vischer`schen Landkarte. - Descriptio Austriae S. 126 (Tafel 28). Extremely Rare 1669 First English Language Edition Of "An Embassy from the East-India Company By Johan Nieuhof

John Ogilby 1669 - The First Book About The Real China A rare 1669 first English language edition of An Embassy from the East-India Company by Dutch author and explorer Johan Nieuhof, originally published in Dutch in 1665. Due to its tremendous success, several other editions were published that were heavily edited apparently for commercial reasons. It was then translated into French, German, Latin and English in 1665, 1666, 1668, and 1669 respectively. While the other versions were published by Van Meurs, the English version was published and translated by John Ogilby. The book, split into two parts and an appendix, contains notes and illustrations that Nieuhof made while he was a steward on Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keizer’s embassy to the emperor of China. It also contains a written account of the trip and 149 illustrations. The first part of the work contains details of the entire journey from Canton to Peking and back while the second part is a general overview of China. This book was important to the time because it was a unique source about China and its practices. The images were an important aspect of the book because they more accurately depicted the people of China versus the fantastical European illustrations from the past. Dimensions: 10.25"W x 16" L x 1.75" H. While the later (early 18th C.) front and back covers are detached, the binding is fully intact. There is a map missing from the very front but the double page plan of "Kanton" is included as called for. Several pages have been repaired with tape. Pages 147-8, 185-204 in the first section are missing due to printing error and pages 96-101 in the appendix are out of order due to printing error, all as called for. On page 90 of the appendix the illustration is upside down, once again as called for. Fair condition overall. Text generally in good condition. Toning and some foxing consistent with age (over 345 years old). Some page corners bent as shown in photos. Please inspect all photos carefully. Insurance is not included in the shipping cost. This is an extremely rare book. We have located only one other copy listed for sale for $24,000.00. Shipping within the continental U.S. is $25.00 but does not include insurance. Buyer will also pay for insurance coverage. Buyers outside the 48 states contact us for shipping cost. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris: Frederic Leonard, 1669. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to (242 x 185 mm). 120pp. Printer?'s woodcut device on title depicting the winged lion of Evangelist Mark and motto, ?"Virtute invidiam vince?" (Virtue overcometh envy) and the legend, ?"Pax tibi marce Evangelista meus.?" 5 engraved folding plates (4 by Sebastien Le Clerc and one by Abraham Bosse) depicting a chameleon on a branch, and a plate with chameleon?'s skeleton and organs in the upper part, on a trompe-l?'oeil sheet; and the same anatomical analysis for the beaver, the camel, the bear and the gazelle, decorative woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments (plates with some tears along folds, repaired on verso, some light darkening, minor marginal worming at end; light edgewear). From the collection of Charles Philippe Robin (1821-1885), French doctor, anatomist and politician (bibliographical note at foot of title). Other early inscriptions to title referring to the engraver ?"M. LeClerc?" and on rear pastedown to the state of the engravings. First Edition and second publication dealing with the comparative anatomy of the animals the chameleon, the beaver, the camel, the bear and the gazelle. Perrault, scientist and naturalist, was the leader of a team of comparative anatomists, called the ?"Parisians,?" that included Guichard-Joseph Duverney, Jean Pecquet, Moyse Charas and Philippe de la Hire. Their investigations began in June 1667 with a thresher shark and lion from the royal academy and went on to encompass forty-nine vertebrate species. The detailed reports and exact descriptions on these dissections were the first of a long series of anatomical descriptions, which ultimately included those of twenty-five species of mammals, seventeen birds, five reptiles, one amphibian, and one fish. Perrault and the team of ?"Parisians?" prided themselves on several discoveries and in the process debunked many popular myths attached to certain species, such as the legend that salamanders live in fire or that chameleons subsist on air. The scientists also recorded how they obtained their results providing a glimpse of how such anatomical research was conducted in the seventeenth century. The work is illustrated beautifully with five large folding plates by the expert painter, engraver, and writer, Sebastian Leclerc (1637-1714), four of which were engraved by Leclerc, and one by the watercolor painter, writer and printmaker, Abraham Bosse (c. 1604-1676). Very fine work; the large folding plates remain fresh and intact. No such detailed and exact descriptions and illustrations had been published before. It is hard to measure another such important addition to the anatomical study of animals.

      - In Venetia, et in Bassano, Per Gio. Antonio Remondin. Con licenza de' Superiori, s.d. (ma 1669). In-12 (141x95), cc. nn. 24. Con 8 vignette sceniche di cui 1 ripetuta. Brossura muta coeva. Elegante scatola contenitiva in marocchino rosso.

Paris, C. Lambin, (1668-)1669. - 4to. (8), 152 pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemp. richly gilt calf, gilt dentelle central cover decoration showing the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gilt spine on five raised bands (upper spine-end and corners repaired). Marbled pastedowns. Second, enlarged edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphèvre" in Paris and first published in 1661. Both editions are dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait, which is here more delicately executed (by Nicolas de Larmessin, in 1664). The large chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing cites the Persian Gulf and several specific places there as among the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. (p. 68). This chapter is here "augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production [.] New chapters comprise Ch. 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, and Ch. 18 on pricing of pearls. In tems of substance, this edition [the second one, here offered] is considerably superior to the first; both are rare" (Sinkankas p. 97f.). It is these new, additional chapters in particular for which this second edition is sought after "Du prix des Diamans" and "Du prix des Perles", as well as one entitled "Raisons contre les chercheurs de la Pierre Philosophale & souffleurs d'Alquemie. - Lower spine-end and corners somewhat bumped, otherwise fine. A good copy in an appealingly decorated contemporary French binding. Sinkankas 593. Duveen 71. Sabin 4957. Brunet VI, 4780. Graesse I, 348. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Second edition, more enhanced by the author. Rare, is not found prior to publishing it to the BN of France or the British Library. vignette on title. Pages with red and black titles. On page 201 is a new page title "tragic stories of our time to Holland paper. By JNDP Third Edition. Leiden, ditto, 1669. "Half red calf wide corners early twentieth century. smooth back, as in long, double-net head and tail of spine. Date tail, double-net Cold boards. Nice copy. The book consists of 126 short stories, most pleasant and comical, often affecting the manners and gallantry. The second part contains 28 stories being passed in Holland paper with more creepy tales (stories of crimes, beheadings, thieves, dramas?). The stories are in a style reminiscent used by historians of the seventeenth, otherwise all stories are satire or criticism mores of the time (often ending with a moral short), and in this they are quite valuable for the information they provide countless life, morals and manners in the seventeenth and especially in Holland paper (but we see scroll across Europe). The first edition was given to the same address in 1663 III. Barbier, 844. Brunet III, 213. Parival (1605-1669), French author and professor at the University of Leiden gave further Delights of Holland paper and Stories from the miseries of that time. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

First edition of Montanus's very detailed and thoroughly illustrated account of Japan, containing the first known printed images and views of major Japanese cities, and also the small island of Dejima, in Nagasaki harbour, the Japanese outpost of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). Arnold Montanus (1625-1683) was a Dutch missionary and editor of this work entitled in German: Memory on the Dutch trade legation sent to the Emperor of Japan. Montanus based the present work on the unpublished reports of these journeys, from the VOC archives, and also in the reports of missionaries (Portuguese, Spanish and Italian). The title-page notes that the book is based on the manuscripts and notes of the VOC delegations, and that the illustrations were drawn in Japan. Other subjects are the first arrival of Europeans, the Japanese religion, customs, the history of Japan, the natural history, and the embassy of Frisius to the Emperor of Japan in 1649 and 1661. From 1641 the Dutch were the only foreigners allowed to trade with Japan, although subject to rigid restrictions outside the VOC outpost on Dejima island. They had to renew permission to trade with Japan annually, for which they sent a delegation from Deshima to the Shogun in Yedo. The illustrations comprise: the folding map (42 x 53 cm) in two panels showing the sea route along the coast from Nagasaki to Osaka, and the land route along the coast from Osaka to Yedo (Tokyo). Four folding views (each on two or one-and-a-half sheets) show profiles of the cities of Osaka, Miaco (Kyoto), Yedo and Kagoshima. Two views show erupting volcanos and many show religious and other rituals, temples, torture and fighting, etc. One shows the Japanese receiving the VOC officials and one shows a rather human-like male

Ex-libris Henri Laboureur.

"The Earliest and most famous treatise on the chemistry and technology of glassmaking, in which the practical and closely guarded secrets of the art are revealed for the first time." was Neri's first work on glass (L'Arte Vetraria), printed in Florence in 1612. Merrett translated it into English for the first time in 1662 with many additions. "The part by Neri (203 pp.) is greatly augmented by Merrett's 'observations' (pp 205-352) comprising explanations, additions, and emendations, which almost double the length of the book and are of considerable chemical importance." Ferguson notes "This is not only a rare but it is an instructive book...it gives the reader an insight into how the sciences in the seventeenth century depended on the use of glass...The account of the ... furnaces, pots, materials and reagents, of the methods for making different qualities and colours of glass is very well done." The present offering is the second issue of the first Latin translation of Merrett's version of Neri, "translated by Andreas Frisius and dedicated to Thodor Kerckring, the translator and commenatator of Basil Valentine. The book is important as being the first illustrated edition of Neri. The second issue of 1669 [as offered here] with altered title page, is otherwise identical to the first. (D.S.B.
