      - In Venetia, et in Bassano, Per Gio. Antonio Remondin. Con licenza de' Superiori, s.d. (ma 1669). In-12 (141x95), cc. nn. 24. Con 8 vignette sceniche di cui 1 ripetuta. Brossura muta coeva. Elegante scatola contenitiva in marocchino rosso.

Paris, C. Lambin, (1668-)1669. - 4to. (8), 152 pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemp. richly gilt calf, gilt dentelle central cover decoration showing the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gilt spine on five raised bands (upper spine-end and corners repaired). Marbled pastedowns. Second, enlarged edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphèvre" in Paris and first published in 1661. Both editions are dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait, which is here more delicately executed (by Nicolas de Larmessin, in 1664). The large chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing cites the Persian Gulf and several specific places there as among the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus & Bassora: aupres de Baroyn [i.e., Bahrain], Catiffa, Iuffa, Camaron, & autres lieux de ce Golfe [.]" (p. 68). This chapter is here "augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production [.] New chapters comprise Ch. 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, and Ch. 18 on pricing of pearls. In tems of substance, this edition [the second one, here offered] is considerably superior to the first; both are rare" (Sinkankas p. 97f.). It is these new, additional chapters in particular for which this second edition is sought after "Du prix des Diamans" and "Du prix des Perles", as well as one entitled "Raisons contre les chercheurs de la Pierre Philosophale & souffleurs d'Alquemie. Et ne sera pas mal à propos de parler de Nicolas Flamel sur ce sujet". - Lower spine-end and corners somewhat bumped, otherwise fine. A good copy in an appealingly decorated contemporary French binding. Sinkankas 593. Duveen 71. Sabin 4957. Brunet VI, 4780. Graesse I, 348. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Vanel, lema "Ars longa vita brevis". On page 201 is a new page title "tragic stories of our time to Holland paper. By JNDP Third Edition. Leiden, ditto, 1669. "Half red calf wide corners early twentieth century. smooth back, as in long, double-net head and tail of spine. Date tail, double-net Cold boards. Nice copy. The book consists of 126 short stories, most pleasant and comical, often affecting the manners and gallantry. The second part contains 28 stories being passed in Holland paper with more creepy tales (stories of crimes, beheadings, thieves, dramas?). The stories are in a style reminiscent used by historians of the seventeenth, otherwise all stories are satire or criticism mores of the time (often ending with a moral short), and in this they are quite valuable for the information they provide countless life, morals and manners in the seventeenth and especially in Holland paper (but we see scroll across Europe). The first edition was given to the same address in 1663 III. Barbier, 844. Brunet III, 213. Parival (1605-1669), French author and professor at the University of Leiden gave further Delights of Holland paper and Stories from the miseries of that time. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Bel exemplaire. Barbier III, 844. Brunet III, 213. Arnold Montanus (1625-1683) was a Dutch missionary and editor of this work entitled in German: Memory on the Dutch trade legation sent to the Emperor of Japan. Montanus based the present work on the unpublished reports of these journeys, from the VOC archives, and also in the reports of missionaries (Portuguese, Spanish and Italian). The title-page notes that the book is based on the manuscripts and notes of the VOC delegations, and that the illustrations were drawn in Japan. Other subjects are the first arrival of Europeans, the Japanese religion, customs, the history of Japan, the natural history, and the embassy of Frisius to the Emperor of Japan in 1649 and 1661. From 1641 the Dutch were the only foreigners allowed to trade with Japan, although subject to rigid restrictions outside the VOC outpost on Dejima island. They had to renew permission to trade with Japan annually, for which they sent a delegation from Deshima to the Shogun in Yedo. The illustrations comprise: the folding map (42 x 53 cm) in two panels showing the sea route along the coast from Nagasaki to Osaka, and the land route along the coast from Osaka to Yedo (Tokyo). Four folding views (each on two or one-and-a-half sheets) show profiles of the cities of Osaka, Miaco (Kyoto), Yedo and Kagoshima. "The Earliest and most famous treatise on the chemistry and technology of glassmaking, in which the practical and closely guarded secrets of the art are revealed for the first time." was Neri's first work on glass (L'Arte Vetraria), printed in Florence in 1612. Merrett translated it into English for the first time in 1662 with many additions. "The part by Neri (203 pp.) is greatly augmented by Merrett's 'observations' (pp 205-352) comprising explanations, additions, and emendations, which almost double the length of the book and are of considerable chemical importance." Ferguson notes "This is not only a rare but it is an instructive book...it gives the reader an insight into how the sciences in the seventeenth century depended on the use of glass...The account of the ... furnaces, pots, materials and reagents, of the methods for making different qualities and colours of glass is very well done." The present offering is the second issue of the first Latin translation of Merrett's version of Neri, "translated by Andreas Frisius and dedicated to Thodor Kerckring, the translator and commenatator of Basil Valentine. The book is important as being the first illustrated edition of Neri. The second issue of 1669 [as offered here] with altered title page, is otherwise identical to the first. (D.S.B. Containing a particular Description of Indosthan, the Mogul's Empire, the Oriental Ilands, Japan, China … Folio (317 × 196 mm) Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco label, compartments gilt with central lozenge tools within scrolled corner-pieces. Engraved frontispiece, incorporating the title, with portraits of the ambassadors including Olearius, 6 double-page or folding engraved maps, 2 engraved portraits, engraved illustration to the text. A little rubbed, corners bumped, judicious restoration to the joints, head- and tail-caps, and edges, endpapers browned, light toning with occasional spotting, a few minor splits on the folds of the maps, the largest with some old paper repairs verso, but overall a very good copy. Second edition in English, seven years after the first; the first edition in German being the Schleswig printing of 1647. This "renowned narrative" (Arcadian Library) was one of the most influential accounts of both Russia and Persia of its time. Adam Olearius, or ?-schläger (1603-71) was the librarian and court mathematician to duke Frederick III of Holstein-Gottorp. In 1633 he was appointed secretary to the ambassadors Philip Crusius, and Otto Bruggemann or Brugman on their mission to the courts of the tsar Michael I, and the Shah Safi to negotiate "arrangements by which Frederick's newly-founded city of Friedrichstadt should become the terminus of an overland silk-trade" (Britannica, 1911). The first embassy travelled from Lübeck via Riga to Moscow in 1633 and returned in April 1635 in order to receive the duke's ratification of the advantageous treaty that they had negotiated with Michael; in 1636 they embarked on the second embassy travelling via Moscow to Astrakhan and on to Persia, from where they returned in 1639 after a series of inconclusive negotiations. "Once back at Gottorp, ?-lschläger became librarian to the duke, who also made him keeper of his Cabinet of Curiosities, and induced the tsar to excuse his (promised) return to Moscow. Under his care the Gottorp library and cabinet were greatly enriched in MSS., books, and oriental and other works of art". Also includes the narrative of Johan Albrecht de Mandelslo (1616?-1644), who accompanied the embassy to Isfahan before setting off alone from Hormuz to Surat, travelling through Gujarat to Agra, Lahore, Goa, Bijapur and Malabar, and visiting Ceylon, Madagascar, the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena on his return voyage in 1639. Before his death just five years later, he passed his journals and notes notes to ?-lschläger, who edited them for publication as here, and published them with further descriptions of the Coromandel coast, Bengal, Siam, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Bantam, the Philippines, Formosa, China and Japan. The Rosebery copy, contemporary ownership inscription of Vere Fane, 4th earl of Westmoreland to the title page, inked book label of General John Fane, 11th earl, dated 1856 to the front pastedown, beneath the armorial bookplate of Archibald Philip [Primrose], 5th earl of Rosebery.

Amsterdam: Jacques & Gasper Anthoine, 1669. unbound. Sea chart. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 19 7/8" x 22 3/4". This handsome sea chart by Pieter Goos depicts Ireland in its entirety, with the north oriented to the right. The chart also extends to parts of Scotland, England, and France. Also prominently featured are rhumb lines, scales, embellished tall ships, an elegant cartouche, and the harp crest for Ireland and the lion crest for Scotland. This map was published in Goos' "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld" and remains in its original uncolored state, which allows Goos' intricate line work to shine. It is in good condition with some foxing, soiling, and off-setting. Minor chips along border. Bottom of the center seam is separated. Pieter Goos (1616-1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and print-seller based in Amsterdam. He belonged to a noted family of cartographers, headed by his father Abraham, who prepared plates for many maps published in the important atlases of the time. His pilot guide, the "Zee-Spiegel," provided some of the first charts of newly explored regions in the West Indies and Western Africa, and his "Zee-Atlas" is considered one of the best sea atlases of its time. This map is a classic example of Goos' high quality, visually appealing sea charts.

The grand question concerning the judicature of the House of Peers, stated and argued. And the case of Thomas Skinner merchant, complaining of the East India Company, with the proceedings thereupon, which gave occasion to that question, faithfully related. By a true well-wisher to the peace and good government of the kingdom, and to the dignity and authority of Parliaments

London: Printed for Richard Chiswel, 1669. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary panelled English calf (expertly rebacked), gilt floral ornaments at the corners FIRST EDITION. Skinner's Case, the name usually given to the celebrated dispute between the House of Lords and the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom over the question of the original jurisdiction of the former house in civil suits. In 1668, a London merchant named Thomas Skinner presented a petition to Charles II asserting that he could not obtain any redress against the East India Company, which, he asserted, had injured his property. The case was referred to the House of Lords, and Skinner obtained a verdict for £5,000. The company complained to the House of Commons which declared that the proceedings in the other House were illegal. The Lords defended their action, and after two conferences between the Houses had produced no result the Commons ordered Skinner to be put in prison on a charge of breach of privilege; to this the Lords replied by fining and imprisoning Sir Samuel Barnardiston, the chairman of the company. Then for about a year the dispute slumbered, but it was renewed in 1669, when Charles II advised the two Houses to stop all proceedings and to erase all mention of the case from their records. This was done and since this time the House of Lords has tacitly abandoned all claim to original jurisdiction in civil suits." References: ESTC R202445. Wing H2459. It is a full page reproduction of the SIFRA DETZNIUTA DEYAAKOV title page. The bilingual text underneath is: 70. On pages 148 149 of the Hebrew language section explaining the illustrations it states, in part, the following: [Rough translation:] "Illustration 70 David di Castro Tartas founded his own press in 1660 after having first worked at the press of Menasseh ben Israel. In several of the books which he printed in quarto size he set an illustrated title page in which various pictures from the life of King David were depicted, in order to hint at his own name: David. Such a title page is found in SIFRA DETZNIUTA DEYAAKOV which he printed in 1669; in BIRKAT HAZEVAH which he printed in 1669 1670, and perhaps in other books as well. A picture of David playing alone, in an enlarged format, appears on the title page of PRI HADASH which was printed at his press in 1692. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Titi Petronii Arbitri eqvitis Romani Satyricon, cum fragmento nuper Tragurii reperto. (The Satyricon) ****** "Following the reappearance of the manuscript containing the Cena Trimalchionis at Trogir in Dalmatia in 1650, a full edition of all that we possess of the Satyricon today became possible, and duly appeared in 1669." [Walsh, p. xxxvi] 'The first full edition', now rare, and far closer textually to the work we know today than any previous edition, has been universally praised for its accuracy and compilation of the best of Renaissance textual criticism and commentary, including the contributions of Giovanni Lucio and Pierre Petit, the scholars chiefly associated with advocating for the CT manuscript's authenticity. ******

BACKGROUND: The Satyricon, one of the most influential works of literature from Classical antiquity was ravaged by censorship and only a scattering of accepted authentic fragments from the larger lewd work have been rediscovered. The most important is the Cena Trimalchionis manuscript, a fragment variant discovered in 1423 by Poggio Bracciolini in Cologne and the first accepted as authentic manuscript to contain the principal surviving fragments of Books XIV-XVI, with the extant Satyricon's centerpiece, Book XV, The Dinner of Trimalchio. The manuscript was 'misplaced' in Florence, before it could be published. In one of the few fortunate moments of the Satyricon's long, convoluted history, it was rediscovered, in 1650, in the library of Nicolaus Cippicus in Trogir, Dalmatia by the scholar, Pierre Petit, aka Marino Statileo. First issued without the other fragments (1664), the printing was carelessly executed. For the first time in 1669 all fragments accepted as authentic to that time were published in a corrected text edition with an anthology of the most significant commentary on the work since the beginning of the Renaissance. JOAN BLAEU I [1596-1673]: Born in Amsterdam, eldest son of Willem Blaeu, he studied law and became a doctor of law, but in the 1630s he was made a partner in his father's highly successful printing business and upon his father's death in 1638, he became head and greatly expanded it. Although primarily remembered for the family's pre-eminent twelve volumes world atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, under Joan I, the Blaeu printing firm became the largest printing press in Europe, noted for their beautiful typography and engraving work. [8], 456, [16] pp. Engraved title, printed title in red and black, 1 large folding map, 4 triple/quadruple folding plates, 20 double-spread plates and 71 half-page engraved plates. Folio, 318 x 200 mm, bound in full contemporary Dutch blind-stamped vellum. Amsterdam: Jacob Meurs, 1669. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First Edition with the absolute finest impressions of these magnificent, historically-important engravings. Arnoldus Montanus (1625-1683), Dutch missionary and editor of the present book, was responsible for both the highly significant text and and the arresting engravings that describe and illustrate Japanese customs and costumes, their cities, towns and villages, the flora and fauna, their religious ceremonies and practices, Japanese war practices, and a general recounting of Japanese history and culture. Montanus' book is especially renowned for the ninety-six, very fine engraved plates showing the coastal towns, ports and cities, including Osaka, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Sakai and Kyoto; plus a number of detailed engraved images of Japanese inhabitants in casual, formal and ceremonial costumes, interiors and exteriors of religious and imperial temples, a few gruesome images of beheadings, seppuku ceremonies, destruction of villages, and numerous action portraits of samurai, an earthquake destroying Tokyo, the Castle of Osaka, Japanese marriage ceremonies, and formal meetings between Western Ambassadors and the Japanese Imperial Court. The important folding map (420 x 530 mm) comprises two panels, the lower map charts the sea route along the coast from Nagasaki to Osaka, and the upper map shows the land route next to the coast from Osaka to Yedo (Tokyo). From 1641 the VOC (Dutch East India Company) were the only foreigners allowed to trade with Japan. The VOC had to renew permission to trade with Shogunate annually, which required a delegation to be sent from Deshima Island to the Shogun in Yedo. Montanus based his text on the unpublished reports from the VOC archives and on records of Jesuit missions to Japan in 1649 and 1661. Upper hinge repaired; internally clean and crisp. It is requisite to point out that only via this original Dutch edition can one acquire the finest impressions of these important engraved plates. Cordier, Bibliotheca Japonica 383. Alt-Japan-Katalog 1053. Landwehr "VOC" 522. Cox I, 325 "The plates in this work represent a high-water mark in book illustration of the 17th century." Lipperheide 1552.
