CHEN, Shigong (or CHIN, Jitsuko)
36 full-page illus. & one diagram in the text. 200; 188 folding leaves. Four parts in two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (wrappers quite worn & rubbed), new stitching. [Kyoto?]: 1663 ["Kanbun 3"].First edition to be published in Japan; it is printed in Chinese with Japanese reading marks. According to Mestler (see reference below), of all the classical Chinese books on surgery which had found their way into Japan, this work was by far the most important. It was written by a Chinese physician, Chin (or Chen), and first published in 1617 in China under the title Xin kan Wai ke zheng zong."There are no known dates for this Chin, but it is accounted in one of the prefaces that he practiced medicine for 45 years, during a time in which surgery was difficult. Most persons practicing this art [surgery] kept it secret, but Chin wrote this book to make his treatments available to everyone. First he applied salve to sores, then he cut them out 'and it was a very bloody scene.' Chen, who treated all persons, rich and poor alike, had a nice 'personality' - which was important praise because in those days the physicians treated patients in accordance to their wealth. He was especially noted for his treatment of tumors, boils, ulcers and abscesses. Chin received much money from his patients, and he used it to build a shrine to the gods of medical science and pharmacology."-Mestler, A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books, III, p. 149.This work is concerned with the causes, diagnoses, methods of treatments, prescriptions, and case histories of various diseases requiring surgery. Amsterdam, Gillis Joosten Saeghman, 1663.4to. Old wrappers. With large woodcut on title-page, full-page woodcut by C.S. Vichem on verso of title-page and 16 fine woodcuts in text (15 within two ornamental woodcut side borders). 52 pp.First edition published in 1598. - Classic account of the three earliest Dutch exploration voyages (1594, 1595, 1596) in search of a northeast passage by Willem Barentsz, two in company with Jan Huygen van Linschoten, the celebrated traveler to the East. The author, Gerrit de Veer, had taken part in the second and third voyage. During the third voyage Barendsz and his crew members were iced in and forced to winter over in Novaya Zemlya in a wooden cabin ('Het behouden Huis'). Trapped from August 26, 1596, to June 14, 1597, they were finally able to sail in open boats some 1600 miles during which they battled continuously against marauding polar bears and pack ice. Barendsz had taken ill and died five days after their escape from the arctic wastes. In 1871 the expedition's winter quarters were found along with many artifacts. Though a northeast passage was not found, the expeditions were considerable successful for the discovery of Spitsbergen in 1596 and for their reports of the abundance of right whales off Spitsbergen, encouraging the start of Dutch arctic whaling. A major work of Arctic exploration and the Dutch quest for a Northeast passage to the Orient. JANSON, Henry Sir
London : printed for Theo Sadler, 1663. - 1663 Philanax Anglicus Anti Presbyterian Church of England & Protestant Politics A rare piece of 17th-century anti-Presbyterian propaganda by Henry Janson. This book, ‘Philanax Anglicus’ primarily deals with exposing the Presbyterian faith for its flaws and creating clear reminders of acceptable behaviors of a Protestant. The author of the preface provides a clear purpose: “[this book] is as properly applicable to all sorts of Christian people, who out to take it for a Warning Piece, to arm themselves against that most horrid cheat of Presbytery. The Ministers of the Presbyterian Religion represent the true Church of Christ to be a Monster, composed of all sorts of abomination” This work also deals with how religion and government should be paired – that the King and Pope both have powers over their subjects and the realm in which they have been given authority. Janson states clearly that the King is the highest power and cannot be considered a traitor. “No king can be a traitor, nor Pope excommunicated. There can be no judge above the king.” Item number: #1418 Price: $499 JANSON, Henry Sir Philanax Anglicus, or, A Christian caveat for all kings, princes & prelates : how they entrust a sort of pretended Protestants of integrity, or suffer them to commix with their respective governments : shewing plainly from the principles of all their predecessors, that it is impossible to be at the same time Presbyterians, and not rebels : with a compendious draught of their portraictures and petigree done to th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johannes BLAEU (Alkmaar 1571 - Amsterdam 1663)
[Click Below for Full Description]

GLASER, Christophle
Paris: Chez l'autheur, 1663. Rare first edition of this very important chemistry text, which went through some thirteen editions between 1663 and 1710. It is one of the earliest attempts to strip chemistry from its alchemical mysticism and to describe chemical preparations in an unambiguous manner. "The work is divided into two books: book I briefly describes the utility, definitions, principles, operations, and apparatus of chemistry: book II is devoted to a description of medicinal preparations drawn from the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms. The section devoted to mineral remedies is by far the largest. Little is novel in these preparations, although Glaser displays individual refinements of technique. His recipe for a sel antifebrile (potassium sulfate made by heating saltpeter and sulfur and recrystallizing from water) became uniquely identified with him and was later known as sel polychrestum Glaseri. The naturally occurring mixed sulfate of sodium and potassium (3K2SO4:Na2SO4) was named glaserite in his honor." (DSB). 8vo (162 x 98 mm), bound in 19th century fine half calf over marbled boards, richly gilt spine with red title label, joints starting but still strong and intact, edges died in red, corners in green vellum. Fully complete: pp [2:engraved title], [viii], 1-378, [3:privilege] and 2 folding engraved plates. A very fine and clean copy. Rare.
