Robert Boyle 1627 – 1691 was an amazing person, son of the 1st Earl of Cork, Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist physicist, and inventor. Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. He is best known for Boyle's law, which describes the inversely proportional relationship between the absolute pressure and volume of a gas, if the temperature is kept constant. He returned to England from Europe in mid-1644 with a keen interest in scientific research. His father, Lord Cork, had died the previous year and had left him the manor of Stalbridge in Dorset as well as substantial estates. But later moved to Oxford. Boyle incorporated his scientific interests into his theology, believing that natural philoso … [Click Below for Full Description]

417-(15) pagine numerate; all'ultima pagina, dati di colophon. Alla carta E1, antico timbro tondo abraso, traspare uno stemma nobiliare. All'interno, capolettera e fregi tipografici; testo su due colonne. Cfr. Herschel, John Frederick William
Smith, Elder, & Co, London, 1663. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, A FOLIO FIRST EDITION of "the first great star-atlas of the southern hemisphere' (Norman Catalogue 1056). "With this monumental survey of the stars of the southern hemisphere, Herschel completed the task begun by his father William, who fifty years earlier had catalogued the northern celestial hemisphere. Using a twenty foot reflecting telescope, which he erected just south of Cape Town, Herschel swept the whole of the southern sky, cataloging nebulae, cluster and binary stars, carrying out the counts of over 68,000 stars. . . he made detailed drawings and maps" (Honeyman 1663). "Herschel stands almost alone in his attempt to grapple with the dynamical problems presented by star-clusters, and his analysis of the Magellanic Clouds was decisive as to the status of nebulæ" (Oxford DNB). The story of the publication of this work is important, particularly given that this copy is inscribed in the author's hand, noted as such in print, and that no other such copies have been recorded. See scans attached. In print it reads "Presented by Algernon Duke of Northumberland to" and then in Herschel's hand "Professor Robinson, New York, With the Author's Compliments." Additionally, the dedication page notes in text that "This work is gratefully inscribed by the author." "By the end of 1842 [Herschel] had performed without assistance the computations necessary for the publication [in this work] of his Cape observations. In September 1843 the letterpress was 'fairly begun,' and after some delays the work appeared in 1847, at the co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kleiner, Salomon.
2 works in 1 vol. Oblong folio, early three quarter blind-stamped brown calf with mottled brown paper over boards. 97 of 102 engravings, 11 of which are folding. A spectacular set of engravings after drawings by Salomon Kleiner picturing one of the most extraordinary estates of the eighteenth century, Prince Eugene of Savoy's Belvedere, in Vienna, designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, court architect to the Hapsburgs. Residences Memorables comprises a series of engravings published in ten separately issued parts, each with its own title page in French and German, and is bound here, as usual, with Kleiner's supplementary series illustrating the Prince's menagerie. Of the 102 engravings found in a complete set of these works-issued serially and thus often incomplete-97 are present here, with plate 9 of part 5 and plates 9-12 of Representation des Animaux lacking. Of the 10 parts, the first consists of a title page, the dedication text and plate, and 8 plates, numbered 2-9 and the 9 following (except part 5) consist of a title page and 9 numbered plates. These splendid views document in minute detail the exteriors and richly ornamented Baroque interiors of the Belvedere estate's two palaces, as well as its extensive gardens and its menagerie. Part one begins with a dedication plate depicting Prince Eugene in the form of a statue set among classical ruins and the spoils of war, closely attended and admired by angels, putti, and Zeus and Athena. It is followed by a plan of the gardens and buildings, an exceptionally handsome bird's eye view of the same, and illustrations of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schottelius, Justus Georg.
Braunschweig, Christoff Friederich Zillinger, 1663. Jahrhunderts darstellt, "makes him (Schottelius) if not the father, then the grandfather of germanic philology" (Faber du Faur). [Click Below for Full Description]

Up until Syv, Latin and German were the learned languages of Denmark and the languages used for all matter of official business. This treatise is the first known work by the great philosopher. The book was not published in his life-time, though, and it is now only known through a Dutch translation (it was originally written in Latin), which was not published until 1862, and the present work on Descartes' philosophy ("Descartes' Principles of Philosophy. Proven by the Geometrical Method") thus constitutes his first published work; it is also the only work that he published which bears his name on the title-page, all of his other works were published anonymously. An expanded Dutch version of the work appeared in 1664.Benedictus Spinoza is one of the most important thinkers of early modern philosophy and all of his works are of groundbreaking character. Peschwitz, Gottfried v.
Jena, Johann Nisius für Zacharias Hertel in Hamburg, 1663. Einzige Ausgabe der seltenen Barock-Poetik. "Since P. had based his work predominantly upon poets and their verses he created something like a forerunner to a true anthology. He cites Opitz, Fleming, Tscherning, Stubenberg, Rist, and most of all Harsdörffer in both verse and prose" (Faber du Faur). – Etwas stockfleckig, sonst gutes breitrandiges Exemplar. – VD17 39:121043U; Goed. GLASER, Christophle.
Paris: Chez l'autheur, 1663. First edition. One of the most important chemical textbooks of the 17th century. Rare first edition of this very important chemistry text, which went through some thirteen editions between 1663 and 1710. It is one of the earliest attempts to strip chemistry from its alchemical mysticism and to describe chemical preparations in an unambiguous manner. "The work is divided into two books: book I briefly describes the utility, definitions, principles, operations, and apparatus of chemistry: book II is devoted to a description of medicinal preparations drawn from the mineral, vegetable, and animal kingdoms. The section devoted to mineral remedies is by far the largest. Little is novel in these preparations, although Glaser displays individual refinements of technique. His recipe for a sel antifebrile (potassium sulfate made by heating saltpeter and sulfur and recrystallizing from water) became uniquely identified with him and was later known as sel polychrestum Glaseri. The naturally occurring mixed sulfate of sodium and potassium (3K2SO4:Na2SO4) was named glaserite in his honor." (DSB). 8vo (162 x 98 mm), bound in 19th century fine half calf over marbled boards, richly gilt spine with red title label, joints starting but still strong and intact, edges died in red, corners in green vellum. Fully complete: pp [2:engraved title], [viii], 1-378, [3:privilege] and 2 folding engraved plates. A very fine and clean copy. Rare.

Paris, Guillaume Desprez, 1663. in-12. 14ff. 232pp. 4ff. "In this small posthumous volume, Pascal correlated hydrostatics and aerostatics by simple demonstrable relationships and banished the myth that "nature abhors a vacuum". Using the recently invented Torricellian barometer, Pascal had his brother-in-law climb the Puy de Dome in 1648 and watch the barometer level fall with the ascent, thereby demonstrating that air had weight, like, he stated, a blanket of wool 20 or 30 fathoms high. The relationship of barometric change and change in the weather was first outlined here. In fluid mechanics Pascal enunciated his law that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally thru the fluid in all directions and that it acts upon the confining surfaces at right angles and with equal pressures in equal areas" (Dibner). Dibner, 143. Pascal Blaise
Guillaume Desprez. First edition of this work in which, for the first time, the weight of air is demonstrated, contradicting the doctrine of the ''horor vacui''. Two folding engraved plates, one woodcut illustration, initials and head- and tailpieces in text. 12mo (144x80 mm), bound in full contemporary calf, the spine gilt tooled and lettered between small raised bands. 14 unnumbered leaves, 232 pages, 4 unnumbered leaves. A very nice copy with some minor expected rubbing and two expert restorations to the tables. PASCAL'S GROUNDBREAKING WORK ON THE EQUILIBRIUM OF LIQUID SOLUTIONS AND THE WEIGHT AND DENSITY OF AIR. Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was among the greatest scientist and philosophers of his age. A mathematical prodigy as a child, he completed an original treatise on conic sections at the age of sixteen. He studied infinitesimal calculus; solved problems of general quadrature of the cycloid; contributed to development of differential calculus; originated, with Fermat, the mathematical theory of probability. He also invented a mechanical calculator, the syringe, and the hydraulic press. He wrote treatises on the equilibrium of liquid solutions, on the weight and density of air, and on the arithmetic triangle. BURGERSDIJK, Franco Petri; HEEREBOORD, Adriano
London; Cambridge: Roger Daniels;Joan.. Field, 1663. Contemporary calf; early manuscript endpapers, occasional browning in second work. An excellent copy from the library of Erwin Tomash with his bookplate. I: First published in 1626, Institutionum logicarum was widely used at many universities in both Europe and America to teach the most complex principles of logic. The author's neo-Aristotelianism exerted a strong influence in the next generation of philosophers at Leiden and his textbooks were still popular after his death in 1635. Burgersdijk (or Burgersdicius, 1590 - 1635) was chair of logic and moral philosophy at Leiden University. II: First published in 1650, Heereboord's work on logic is an explanation of the work of Burgersdikj, his teacher and predecessor, through annotations and examples, as well as explanations that were requested by the deans of different schools (as he states in the dedication). It contains the 1651 edition of the second part entitled Praxis Logica with colophon dated 1651. Heereboord (1613-1661), a Cartesian logician and philosopher from the Netherlands, is credited for introducing the writings of Descartes in the University of Leiden where he taught logic. He was the main representative of the Philosophia Novantiquea movement. He shared his teacher's focus on the utilitarian function of logic. There is evidence that Spinoza occasionally attended his lectures. These two works on logic are particularly noteworthy for combining a logic textbook with commentary, written respectively by one professor and his successo … [Click Below for Full Description]

JONSTON, John.
DSB VII, pp. 164-165; Nissen, ZBI 2136; this edition not in BMC NH. First edition in Dutch, of John Jonston's classic illustrated zoological encyclopedia. The 250 excellent illustration plates, mostly with three or more animals each, provide accurate views of about a thousand animals, along with some rather odd images of the more exotic beasts and the occasional unicorn, mermaid, dragon, phoenix, harpie, etc. The 6 parts cover quadrupeds; fish (including some sea mammals); "bloodless" sea animals (mostly invertebrates); birds (including bats); "grooved or twisted" animals (insects, spiders, worms, slugs, etc.); and snakes and dragons. A copy of the present edition was presented to the Shogun in 1663, and remained Japan's principal source of knowledge for western zoology for nearly a century (Boxer, Jan Compagnie in Japan, p. 50). Few expert repairs to the binding and in the margin of a few leaves. Good copy.
